    In the stretching dollar arena the cool thing about 3 phase woodworking tools.
    They are often cheaper in the used market than a beefy 240 used equipment.
    There is simply a smaller set of buyers for used 3phase and I often see good quality gently used three phase equipment for a price lower than used 240.
    Some are well used being commercial but often see equipment time to time and it could pay back the 3phase convertor.
    Cheers!

    Welcome to the family!
    I'll be mild: After having not so much fun with Hammer machines K4 and A341 (Felder Grouppe) I decided to upgrade to Felder machines. I got table saw K700 and fully upgraded combo j/p AD741.
    These are beautiful machines and work incredible. Worth every penny.
    Btw, the first letter is the name of the machine in German (D for planer), 9 is the Felder series (9 is the best one) and 51 is the width of planning in centimeters (20" or so). If I had more money I'd definitely go with the AD951 but mine was already a stretch.
    Congratulations on your machine, you'll love it even more every day you use it.
    Best regards from Croatia

    VFDs can generally directly run 3 phase motors, but not machines that have other electronics. Ran into this when I initially tried to use a VFD to run a jointer in my home shop, but eventually had to shell out the extra cash for the same American Rotary phase converter you bought, which is fantastic. Generally you most see VFDs running either old direct drive style machine motors without fancy electronics, or on CNCs running brushless spindles.

    • @chadhowell1328

    • @williamdussault991
      @williamdussault991 Год назад +2

      VFD's can absolutely run three phase machines. They just go by the name of "inverters" which are essentially the same thing. The inverters that run large machines are usually very large with some very large IGBT's. Very common on boats which cannot exactly be hooked up to a power grid

    • @ronniestanley75
      @ronniestanley75 Год назад +1

      @@williamdussault991 . Wrong. Industrial drives don't use igbts. They use SCR groups to fire the correct frequency. Silicon controlled rectifiers run faster and last longer. You only see igbts on smaller drives.

    • @ronniestanley75
      @ronniestanley75 Год назад +1

      If the electronics can't run off if a VFD, how is his planer running the display, the main drive VFD, and all the other micro electronics that run the machine? That 3phase generator is nothing more than a VFD that is programmed to recreate a specific wave form of 3 phase power at a specific voltage.

    • @jeremyw5231
      @jeremyw5231 Год назад +3

      @@ronniestanley75 Rotary phase converter is much different than a vfd - how it works and also from sheer size. You have a 90 pound motor being used to generate the 3rd phase with the rotary phase converter, where with a VFD the power is generally converted to DC and then using capacitors and diodes is turned into pulsed power simulating three phase AC, but not the exact same.
      One of the culprits may also be that with a VFD you need to be extremely specific with output voltage, amperage, poles etc, which is readily known for a motor but not for all the electronics that rectify the power before it gets there, and may also be used to run other thing, for example the feed motor in a planer.

      One can purchase an electronic phase converter. They are more expensive but if the machine you're installing is very picky about the 120 degree between the phases it might be necessary. You can build a three phase rotary converter with a motor and a handful of capacitors which cause a third leg to be lagging 120 out of phase.

    Hey Marc, sound power measurements have a 1/distance^2 from source dependence. For example: doubling the distance reduces sound level by a factor of 4 (2^2). Unless you use the same standoff distance, the sound power will not be apples to apples from source to source. Typically one meter is the reference distance. Killer planer!!! - cheers from a hobby wood/metal working physicist.

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  Год назад

      The only distance that matters to me is the distance between my head and the tool, which is the ballpark distance I employed in the video. I'd argue my measurements are more meaningful as a result. Measuring each tool at a fixed distance, while nice for spec sheets, doesn't help much if you're not actually standing in that same location when using the tool. Also, this wasn't intended to be apples to apples. For that I would have to show different types of planers all at working distance. The only point of the sound meter was to show how quiet the machine is relative to other things people are familiar with.

    • @HonoredMule
      @HonoredMule Год назад

      I don't use them much myself, but that's largely because my design aesthetics infrequently involve/accommodate dados, and even then they sometimes can't be through the whole work piece.
      But if I do have to make a dado, I much prefer the table saw (stack or no stack), _especially_ if it's 1/2" or bigger. I find using guide rails tedious, the full-size router to be a huge hassle, and the small cordless not much better for that kind of work even when it can handle it. I _can_ get good results with router or table saw, but with a dado stack the good results are effortless, as is the repeatability. With my cheap edge guides/router slide, I also find the router falls rather short on maximum possible precision of placement.

    • @timseguine2

      @@HonoredMule I understand the repeatability argument. I think I just find the idea of setting up a dado stack correctly for a precise width cut extremely unappealing. And a table saw seems dangerous enough to me without turning it into a wood chipper. To each their own.

    On Felder machines you have to continue to hold the green start button until the machine has come up to speed. If you don't it, it may cause premature failure.

      @@pkwoodworking Thank you for clarifying that. My Felder bandsaw and Jointer planer are single phase. I just noticed how slow Marc's the planer came up to speed and figured it would be the same as my machines.

    By the way, the power button needs to be hold until it speed up to the maximum speed. I have the Hammer version from Felder group. It's a safety feature. If you press it once without holding, it will take a while to ramp up. Holding it is a confirmation you want it to run and it will ramp up right away. Just punching once the start button will kill your capacitors overtime. True story.

    • @mrector23

      This is only when using a start capacitor for single phase. Three phase machines get rotation from the three phases and don’t need a starting capacitor.

    What is the advantage of 3ph power? I know about the advantage of 220V over 110V single phase but not 3ph. It is an impressive piece of equipment though. That cutter head is awesome. And it it is certainly quiet. I bet that the only thing that is less is the price though. And to say nothing of the phase converter. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

    • @HonoredMule
      @HonoredMule Год назад +1

      I believe 3ph is just a more efficient (and smoother) format, particularly at industrial scale. There are definitely resources out there covering exactly this. At the scale of this particular tool, it's probably a design choice based on typical customer use-cases (i.e. in industrial facilities with mostly 3ph infrastructure) more than technical merit.

    • @whirled_peas
      @whirled_peas Год назад +2

      Capacity for power generally. You don't really get single phase motors of the size that are in that planer. 3ph motors are generally a tad more efficient too, run cooler, last almost forever if used correctly. Single phase motors have capacitors and/or centrifugal switches which eventually go bad.

    • @JimHester
      @JimHester Год назад +3

      3-phase power is capable getting much more power to a tool. Or, put another way, a 3-phase tool draws less current than an equivalent single phase tool. Usually, you won't see things above 5HP running single phase, but for a machine requiring a 10HP motor, 3-phase is really the only way you can get there. Another is that 3-phase motors don't require startup capacitors or other things to get the motor running, eliminating a point of failure on the motor. Also, much like going from 110v to 220v single phase, a 3-phase motor typically runs more quietly than an equivalent power single phase motor.

    Never heard of Felder, probably because I typically don’t research tool’s I’ll never be able to afford, or really don’t have a need for, but damn, I’d love something like this in my garage shop, especially something that will accept more than 13”. But I’m thinking a drum sander might be a better, and far cheaper tool for me right now as I hate sanding! I’m amazed at how quiet your Felder is! My planner sounds like a jet with motor issues, and for the life of me, I can’t avoid some snipe, but I guess that’s life with a lunchbox planner. Congratulations on your new toy, and I hope your business is very successful.
