Wow, in 1955 I was 2, and remember my father and other African American men often singing , "Straighten up and fly right...." . I did not understand the true meaning of this song when I was young. Yet, today watching this video I know exactly what Mr King and my dad were saying to me and the world. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge Mr King for this hymn, and this prayer!
I was bartender on an Amsterdam- Paris train in the '90's. The barcar had it's own music-installation which we were not allowed to use on a regular train. Only on holidaytrains etc. But we did ! I was just discovering the old American Swing and Big Bands at that time. I was in my 40's , it was the music we heard on TV in Holland in old movies and shows. Glenn Miller, Dorsey Brothers etc.( Chattannooga Choo Choo goes very well while travelling in a train, specialy the longer filmversion ! ) A train-conductor on that train played in a band himself and was a great fan of Nat King Cole. He recorded a tape for me with rare music from Nat King Cole recorded in a club somewhere, which I ofcourse played ! Specially in offseasons ,early dark outside on the return-journey , not too busy, people would sit down , have a drink and have a chat . Often about this music, once in a while older Americans would come up to me asking "where did you get this tape ???" , because they never heard these not-officialy recorded songs before . Great to see and hear this far too short clip !
This film is just too short. I so wish it was longer cause I could watch him all day. He died at such a young age. Love and always will love Nate King Cole. Thanks for uploading.
Wow. I'm sixty six. I love this guy's voice. When I was a kid I wanted a voice like his. I was working on an animation of "Straighten Up and Fly Right!" but I lost my animation software and could never finish it. Thank you reelblack.
The black and African man can create anything out of nothing. All we need is to look in our inner self and do for our self. We make this people rich while they exploit our talent for their currency hungry testing. Here in South Africa they also do same. West Africa is now fighting harder to understand what is going on in the diaspora. Love and miss from your brother and one day we all shall unite as one body and one nation. Thanks for the upload my brother in the diaspora.

Pretend was the very first song I heard Cole sing, was a child with my aunt's old 78's at 5 years old. I must have played it 5 times in a row. one of those moments that defined what I would do for a career and a lifetime hobby as well. Music. Oh there was the Beatles, Elvis and host of classical and jazz music as well...but Nat King Cole's Pretend has a special place in my heart. I became a band director and snag and played in bands on keyboards and guitar, but always singing.. I did not take lessons for singing, that just came from the heart. Played trumpet in a bog band for over 2 decades. But I never abandoned my true roots...singing. There's sensationalism, and then there's true music from the heart, not the cash register, even though at the time, the cash register was definitely singing.

Calling a grown man "boy!" The level of disrespect my people have had to put up with is unbelievable. 🥀R.I.P Nat King Cole🥀
Today whites are called the same by blacks. Those blacks need to learn about Martin Luther King.
And still are!
I noticed that too 😠
Mr. Cole was very classy and sophisticated.

Agree. But he rose above it ( called class) and became very wealthy, successful and admired. Skin color does not determine destiny.
