- Buggies video too? What about the first IFMAR Worlds in 1986 in Grenoble France? Back then it was called Rallycross! Here it is...
This video is probably the biggest surprise for me since I started publishing these r/c videos. I knew I had been at that Worlds, I have a 'family' video with wife and kids and I was convinced that I was there only to watch and support the team, only to find out watching the footage that I actually raced there myself! This has been erased from my memory completely, maybe because our Serpent team with the new Spirit 1:8 buggy were trashed by the Italian Garbo chassis from Italy. That was a completely new breed off-road chassis with long suspension arms and was the only car that could handle that surface. Our cars looked like horses kicking their rear legs all the time. The only way I could get around at all was driving near the barriers and the ropes where the track was reasonable flat. I think I made the quarter final and Ronnie the semi final, don't think we had any cars in the final. I do remember that I participated in the 1988 EFRA Euros buggies in Hillerod Denmark, having to use the same tactics and finishing second... Don't think I have done more international buggy races than these 2...
Anyway, it's another historic r/c video to make you realize how much 1:8 buggies have evolved over these years. This 1986 Worlds track didn't even have any jumps, just more or less a rough flat track with holes... Oh well, 3 tiny bumps then. I guess that's why we called it 'rallycross'.
Gilbert Dognon, an avid 1:8 on-road racer and dear friend from the past, acted as the Race Director! Off-road brands back then were Kyosho, Yankee, Siccom, Garbo, PB (Mustang) and as said we were there with the Serpent Spirit. And guess who were pitting for me? Rody Roem and Sander de Graaf... Btw a lot of this video was apparently shot by Rody listening to the interviews!
