In this video (produced in somewhat of a rush before I left for Japan) I show you how to check and reset the auto focus mechanism on Sonar SLR cameras.
Effectively, to perform a "reset" on your Sonar, hit the manual focus switch, open the film door, focus the lens all the way to the closest position, then close the door and turn off the manual focus. The lens SHOULD return to the "park" position.
If it doesn't, then your camera will need to be repaired.

Getting artifacts in the video? For best quality, manually select 1080p quality, as depending on your bandwidth, RUclips may default to 720p - and RUclips's 720p compression looks like garbage

what ive found is that my camera will focus fine till is at less than 1m distance at which point I have to manually focus. Is there a fix for that ?
Not an easy fix
Like the video says, if this technique didn't work, then your camera will need to be repaired
Anything you can recommend doing if the manual focus switch won’t latch anymore? Could never get it to latch down anymore just by pressing on it for this camera some reason
Nothing without replacing or repairing the housing for the switch
How far beyond infinity should it be in its resting position?
1 tooth
Basically the line should align with the edge of the infinity symbol, not the centre
This of course assumes your scale is placed on accurately. Some where installed crooked from the factory :)
How common is the opto sensor failure?
Pretty common
From what I can gather over years of experience, it seems to happen due to heavy oxidization, or defective LEDs from factory
I've only ever seen it in cameras that arrived to me broken. I've never witnessed one fail.
Seems that if they work, they should basically work forever
@@theinstantcameraguythere is a red light that turns on in my sonar when I try and autofocus, should that be visible? I can see the red light in my view finder, and of course my sonar doesn't work.
@@deramontefamily the red light is the low-light warning
Its in the manual. Google the PDF and have a read of it and you'll see how it works :)
Can I use this if I drop my SX-70 Sonar again?
Yup
This is easy way at least attempt to reset things
Would an LTE-302 diode be a good replacement for the emitter?
If it fits any IR emitter will work
Thanks Jake. I really enjoyed your content, keep it up.
my sx-70 sonar gets stuck in infinity all of a sudden, but the weird thing is it won’t take picture in manual mode? the film is brand new and the battery is working so I don’t understand why manual focus isn’t working… any ideas?
That's a very odd issue
I'd need to see it in person to help
@@theinstantcameraguy that doesn’t sound promising haha update though: remote shutter works
@@marmndc then my guess is bad solder on the PCB or a failed button
Step bro lmao
