      @@jonfreeman9682 I guess at least same universe / lore is a requisite in such cases, adapting a different/ not connected novel is a high risk of failure, there is some reason why other novels from the author hasn't been adapted yet. Hype shouldn't be the only reason to produce sequels, and please , GOT is the best example that you don't get results when you try to adapt material that does not even exists on the original material, just taking same characters into a new history with different quality from the original material is a recipe for failure.

    I only wish they would have made this limited series 16 episodes long, not 10...it feels a bit too rushed. Still love it, but I think 6 more episodes would have been awesome.

    • @jonfreeman9682
      @jonfreeman9682 Месяц назад +2

      The original series 1980 was only 5 episodes so they've already doubled it here but I agree it could easily expand to more episodes for deeper character development. There's alot of side characters that could use more backstory like what happened to the others sailors John Blackthorne sailed with. They all somehow died and only 6 was left. What happened to them. Also Mariko could use more backstory. Plus they could also do a few episodes on Ishida on how he rose from poverty to become a feared general.

    • @portersblackboard
      @portersblackboard Месяц назад +2

      I agree with farmgirlrebel 100%. It does feel a little rushed and I think 16 episodes would have been more satisfying. @jonfreeman I just Googled the run time of the original 1980 series, Wikipedia says the original was 12 hours but I think that includes commercials. But I am finding that the FX version is a total of 9 hours 47 minutes. So I figure they are about the same length of time. The original started with a 3-hour opener ended with a 3 hour finale and had three 2-hour episodes in between. My guess is the new version has probably 30 minutes more.

      more than likely it was at least in part due to the identity politics that dominates the far left today. The show runners were likely told "John Blackthorn is too central to the story and too much a competent and capable while man... we can;t have that. The far left crowd will be up in arms calling him "yet another great white savior:" Never mind that the person Blackthorn is based on actually existed, and from when he arrived in 1600 till when the 500 rifles and 19 canon he brought with him and helped use to win the shogunate... still in 1600, he helped reshape japans history in meaningful ways.
      The show runners were likely afraid to buck the political far left agenda because hulu is owned by disney now...; and we know where they lay on the politcal spectrum under Bob Iger

    A prequel would be a much better option. After Tokugawa (Toranaga) takes the helm, Japan will go into an isolation era. During that period there were no wars, just to see how the Tokugawa clan kept their lineage within their bloodline for several centuries by enforcing strict laws. Boring, so to speak. Instead what leads up to Blackthorne's arrival (late 1800s) would be a much more interesting option. A rise and fall of Oda Nobunaga, Mariiko's father's betrayal, a black servant of Catholic church turned a samurai serving Nobunaga... historical elements are all there. It may be a same-ole story that Japanese audience may be tired of, but the rest of world would surely enjoy it.

    Too many questions if you ask me. What a waste

    • @McLarenMercedes
      @McLarenMercedes 28 дней назад

      Both the 1975 novel and 1980 tv mini-series reveal in an epilogue where Toranaga fought against Ishido in the Battle of Sekigahara and defeated him by noon. Ishido is caught alive and in order to "fulfill" the prophecy of Ishido dying a very old man with his feet firmly in the ground Toranaga has him buried neck deep in the ground in Edo. Passers by were asked to saw "the most expensive neck" in Japan with a blunt bamboo saw. Ishido endured for three days and "died a very old man".
      After winning the battle of Sekigahara the Emperor of Japan (barely mentioned in the 2024 adaptation) proposes the title of Shogun to Toranaga which he "reluctantly" (fake modesty as it was his intention as well as belief that's what fate had in mind for him) accepts. So Toranaga reigns supreme and becomes Shogun. Nothing more to tell about him.
      Spoilers ahead: In the 1980 tv mini-series the Portuguese are a lot more hateful and scared of the "Englishman" and want him killed at any cost before he causes them more trouble than they can handle. At a personal stand-off captain Ferreira attempts to kill Blackthorne himself by cursing him to hell and pulling his pistol on him. Anjin's loyal samurai shoot their arrows at Captain Ferreira killing him. Since he was the captain of the black ship Father Bell'aqua instead grants Vasco Rodrigues (a far larger part in the original tv-series while barely in the 2024 series) the title as captain of the Black Ship. Blackthorn gives him due respect and seems genuinely glad his "friend" has gained this great honor but also warns him he will "soon come after him with the Erasmus". Rodriguez then surprises everybody (the audience in particular) by saying:"With *what ship* Englishman? The Erasmus is dead. It caught fire and nothing is left of her." Blackthorn refuses to believe it but Father Bell'aqua says:"No, he's telling the truth. Erasmus is gone."
      Blackthorne is furious and tells Vasco Rodrigues:"May the storms wreck you and take you to hell!" to which Rodriguez laughs and then calmly replies:"Perhaps *they will* Englishman... *but you are forever stuck here, beached and with no way to get home.* " There is a final tone in that.
      So as far as the Portuguese are concerned Vasco Rodrigues is the new captain of the Black Ship and Blackthorne seized to be a threat when the Erasmus burned down. For what can Blackthorne do to the Portuguese without a ship to attack them with? Nothing. He's a neutralized threat to them and stuck in Japan.
      Neither the fates of Captain Ferreira, Vasco Rodrigues and the Black Ship, which Blackthorn wants to attack and raid at any cost, is resolved in the 2024 version. Real pity.
      John Blackthorn being building a new ship called The Lady from money Mariko left to him in her final will. Spoilers ahead: The 1980 series ends with a shot of Blackthorn building his new ship while Toranaga watches him and ponders burning down this ship as well thinking that fate brought Blackthorn to Japan and it's also Blackthorn's fate never to leave Japan.
      Both the 1975 novel and 1980 tv mini-series concludes the story nicely:
      1. Toranaga wins the Battle of Sekigahara.
      2. Ishido is caught alive and dies painfully buried neck deep into the ground for three days.
      3. The Emperor of Japan makes Toranaga Shogun. Supreme commander/warlord of all Japan.
      4. Captain Ferreira is killed, Vasco Rodrigues becomes captain of the Black Ship and Blackthorn can't do anything about it because the Erasmus burned down.
      5. It is heavily implied Blackthorn will never leave Japan.
      As to what happens after that... read the real history. James Clavell based his novel on real characters in Feudal Era Japan. He just changed the names. Toranaga was really called Tokugawa Iaesu. And the real English pilot William Adams was the inspiration for John Blackthorn. Wiki what their fates were.

    They could have stretched this out. A few episodes worth of time could have been spent with images of Blackthorn learning Japanese which was the best part of the 1980s version. They could have stretched out the episodes by having a romance between Blackthorn and Mariko. I know they wanted to distinguish between the 1980 version but the target audience wouldn't have ever seen that. Why they didn't focus on Blackthorn was a huge mistake. His influence and reason for being there ended after he informed Toranaga about the Portuguese. They wasted his character. In fact, Toranaga stated Blackthorn was simple minded which I don't believe anyone who would jump on a ship and steer for an unknown country and actually find it could be simple minded. And what happened to Rodriguez? They got the wrong guy playing Rodriguez too....terrible casting and under utilized. The series was good at first but it has been a disappointment since.

      You’re too hung up on the old show and the novel mate, move on, unlike back then, no one really wants to see the smaller details, and like how modern film is, is more straight to the point, but this show still brilliantly has so many accurate , and beautiful details.

      @@jmgonzales7701 I agree! The show is called "Shogun", not a "White guy stuck in Japan" or the "Last Samurai 2.0". Focusing on the Japanese point of view was the best thing they could have done for the show.

      @@wizzfizz6800 A piece of advice, when you don't know something about a topic, keep your ill informed mouth shut or you'll confirm your lack of knowledge about it The novel was not just something you "move on" from, it was the source material that the current show draws from. You saying move on is the same bs argument that LotR the rings of power tries to pull as justification for fucking up the source material. The fact that every tolkien fan hates that show should be an abject lesson about how you don;t fuck with successful source material. Shogun the novel is whats called an ensemble piece. I get what you are AFRAID of, that Blackthorn will come off as a "white savior" if they show him as competent and a heroic character in his own right, but maybe that's just because you;re ignorant. This is not at all what happens in the book, and if you'd read the book you'd know that. The novel gave everyone more or less equal time. Toranaga developed a friendship with Blackthorn which parallels the real world person that Blackthorn was based on William Adams. Look it up. William Adams better known in Japan as Miura Anjin (三浦按針, 'the pilot of Miura') was a vital person in the Tokugawa Shogunate. Given a historical person his rightful due is nothing to be ashamed of, especially when it is historically accurate and the japanese themselves recognize his contribution to their history.

      ummm no that;s not right. Shogun is a single book. The end of that book is the end of our time with those characters. The other books in the series are all in different times, taipan for example, the next book, is set in the 19th century I believe. Blackthorn and toranaga are never written about again by the author after the events of shogun wrap up. I won't spoil you as to what happens, but a lot of the characters realistically simply cannot be heard from again. Also, just so you know, Blackthorn is actually based on a real person as is Toranaga... All you need to know there is that Toranaga and Tokugawa sound very similar for a very good reason, and the next era, the Tokugawa Shogunate lasts for a very very long time indeed.

    They should have had 12-14 eps at the rate it developed things. The book had a much more developed relationship between blackthorn and mariko. In truth, right now there is literally no chemistry between the two characters in this rendition, in the book there was genuine love, humor, and respect between the two and blackthorn was a worthy and loyal friend to toranaga and a valient character where in the tv series he's simply not. If anything, in this series Blackthorn is a cowardly and inept shell of the book character. Toranaga in the book is a deep, interesting, and even comedic character who is full of humor as well as full of plotting and great cunning. I've been rather disappointed in some of the choices made here because it feels like they are worried that making Blackthorn even a little heroic or capable would have the wrath of the woke mob come down on them for blackthorn being a white savior. The truth is, Blackthorn should be a heroic character, he was known as one of the best pilots in the world from the reaction of characters in the book, he is tremendously brave, he led a fleet of 5 ships from Portsmouth to Japan with an acquired rudder. He has forethought enough to ration his fruit to stave off scurvy, and he ultimately served Toranaga bravenly and loyally throughout and gave him plans to use his ship and skills to build a japanese deep sea fleet *blackthorn didn't just pilot ships, he was also a skilled shipbuilder and was able to build deep sea vessles from scratch. The kind of adventurous life he led was heroic. Do him his due. Mariko was also tremendously brave, but she was also not an ice b**** like she is in this show. She and blackthorn developed a deep bond full of both serious moments and very light hearted ones. At the end she did her duty to Toranaga, but she was also a real person who also could fall in love and show that love to her precious person. In this version she's just too cold. In the 1980s shogun its clear that Mariko loved blackthorn and almost made up with her husband following the chanoyu ceremony. So many missed opportunities in this series that the 1980s version took. They need to add 2 to 4 more episodes to fix just a part of what they missed.
