I didn't see Toranagas plan as a ruthless calculated move for ambition and power.
It was shown in episode one that although his lord would give him Japan on condition to protect his son, toranada said no. 1. He was only interested in his clans survival and a peaceful life. He engaged on the counsel on as a necessity for his peoples survival. 2. The others would use that gift as a reason to start a war by uniting against him. Stopping Senseless bloodshed which is the core aspect of his character motivates all his decisions.
    3. The Shogun is the loneliest life. He desires peace, security and to enjoy a prosperous life with his family/clan.
While he cannot prevent decisions made by his son which he knew would kill him one day, he instead uses it an thus saves an ugly pointless death making it the beautiful death that his son desired.
Also with his best friend, it was a gift from his friend that Toranada did not anticipate expressed clearly in his body's reaction when confronted by Hiramatsu. Toranada is very precise with his body movements but in that moment he threw his body back sharply. Hiramatsu last words were "forgive me" Toranadas face was turned away so the others couldn't see the gut wrenching pain. But again this was not a senseless death.
He has given all those deaths a greater heroic meaning.
It is not ruthless ambition but love and the protection of his clan.
It is expressed so poignantly in the poetry battle between Mariko later. Listen to the words.
In fact he can only let himself relax with her, the mask falls and we can see the anguish in his face.
He did not choose this path and his only reward for a life of loneliness, and court intrigue is the safety of his people.
    It's tragic.
The true majesty of great rulers is the sacrifice of all things personal for the good of all.

The captain General was the leader of the crew, Blackthorne was the pilot and was never called anything other than "Pilot" he became the leader because he was the only one that had the navigational skills to get them home

I love them, not because they are better but because it is a different medium and they have managed to create a sense of mystery.

What a bunch if whining b*tches! You really need a spoiler alert when you watch a video on an episode you haven't seen? You lot are the reason there is a "DONT DRINK" label on a bottle of bleach. Pathetic! I bet you are all American.

Buntaro finished his father with one clean stroke. Toranaga took multiple strokes when he was twelve to kill the man he had defeated in battle. Buntaro would not like his father to suffer in the same way.

@@Cine_Insider Not really, what I am saying is in the word's I used. Buntaro acted as a second because he was a great warrior. his father's death would be swift and dignified.
