It was still good, but when Blackthorne got left behind and took it in stride and wasn't too irritated by it afterwards was a bit weird. And him not addressing Mariko's husband's death to her until they are reunited on the japanese galley is also a bit mis-timed. Nitpicking, the visuals, music, and overall story are still solid.
I completely agree. There have already been promotional teasers indicating that the two characters will share intimate moments, and there's speculation that the husband may still be alive. @@AlFirousstory wise, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, based on real history of the three kingdoms in China after the fall of the Han dynasty, is beyond good and some of the stuff just make you go what?!?! and beats the pants off of Game of Thrones! I agree I think Toda Hirokatsu will be captured and like you mentioned be turned to Ishido's side. I also have to disagree with you on John Blackthorne, I feel like the actor has done an incredible job at playing his role so far, he really comes across as rugged and headstrong which makes you anxious that he will get himself into trouble but also displays his characters strength and wit really well in times of need. Thats just my opinion!
I think you missed the scene where John saved Toranaga when the guard at the gate was about to find Toranaga in the litter. This contributes a lot to the reason why Toranaga later treated John so nicely after they all escaped
As a book reader (I've read it many times) and a huge fan of the first series from 1980 (I have the original DVDs), I know what's going to happen. I won't spoil it but I find it incredibly interesting to listen to you guess what's going to happen with various characters and while you're not 100% correct, you're definitely heading down the right path.

Shogun is one of if not the best new series I’ve seen win a very long time. The only thing I’ve noticed that could be done a little better is the subtitles/translations but the show is still solid! I also liked your interpretation of the show& Mariko’s/Johns future relationship. Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽
Yo, I just wanted to say you earned a subscriber! I really like your insights on the extra bits detail you provided. Interested in watching your other vids and will watch it!
I think I enjoyed this episode much more than last 2. It feels that the chess pieces are finally moving. I love how calculating Toranaga is. The characters all have their braveries and their foil, which gave it a special edge.
I read this book about 20 years ago it was 800 pages long and easily the best book I've ever read phenomenal I'm so happy they made a movie or a series I mean and I can't wait to watch it
From what I understand from Toranaga, he kind of wants to recreate Oda Nobunaga's idea with the Ashigaru, a unit formed from farmers with cheap equipment but carrying muskets. With this he manages to transform farmers into soldiers who can cause terror and even kill samurai.
I thought maybe some form of Gewalthaufen. (That is the German word for and I couldn’t find an English translation) That dominated the battlefield of Europe for the last 100 years. That would be a mixture of soldiers carrying muskets and pikes
I love this show but unable to watch it until Tuesday night on FX. Nothing spoiled for me as this series i will no doubt watch and re-watch. Really well done and nice summary BrainPilot!
Major SPOILERS: DO NOT read if you want to avoid spoilers. In the book, Toranaga admitted the reason he’s keeping John Blackthrone in Japan was because he needed a good friend he can trust since he can’t trusts his own kind, not even his own family. 1:50 is a major foreshadowing of that.
Rodrigues is a polyglot based on what we've seen so far. Spanish - native tongue, Portuguese - works for them, Japanese, and Dutch - read the captains log journal. Both of the priests must read and understand it as well based on the visual cues we've been given. Now how does a Spanish pilot, and two Portuguese priests speak Dutch, I do not know.
It was not uncommon for Missionaries to be multilingual, even sailors. Most sailors are kind of along the lines of mercs and freelancers who get sponsorship from various nations to fund their voyages, so they can work for one country now and a different one later, hence the need to be multilingual.
I remember in the book Blacktorn speaks Portugese. In this series English is used to keep it easy I guess. In that respect I wonder the ships journals contain prove of piracy... Shorely for the portugese there's no doubt
I agree on the Blackthorne deliveries. Its the only part of the acting on the show that comes off as a bit questionable at times. Action sequences he comes through but dialogue...😬 Great review again👍🏽
I just wanted to let you know that I need to retract my comment from 23 hours ago. I've now watched all the episodes and fully grasped the significance of each scene, understanding the meaning behind every look, gesture, and how they acknowledge each other. The respect and honor exchanged between the characters are clear to me now. And yes, there's definitely 100% romance in there! LOL
This isn't necessarily based on history, it is based on James Clavell's bestselling novel Shogun from 1977. It was followed by a huge 6 part miniseries in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain.
6:39 I found that moment kinda dumb, why risk running against the rocks when you could just fall in behind the larger ship until its safe... but whatever, they needed it for an exciting story moment i guess.
Ships doesn't have breaks apparently lmao and it's way harder to navigate it at those ancient times clearly even if they stopped rowing the ship won't stop
The original Shogun miniseries in the 80's was HUGE as well. There was a different kind of thing going on with the rise and economic power of Japan in the 80's - there were a ton of Japanese movies that followed the miniseries. I was nine years old when the original series aired and was hooked on feudal japan and Samurai culture - and had a huge crush on Yôko Shimada. First three episodes have been awesome
I was confused about the whole blackthorne being left behind by the captain only to understand that everyone wants him dead & the captain was therefore looking after his own back lol, BT still made it out!
I think Mariko opened up too fast to John. I remember her being rather distant (even a bit hateful?) to him in episode 2. Todo‘s last stand on the pier was amazing. His movement, posture and facial expressions made him look like a beast, even though he is rather slim, I think. And I don't understand how the small boats were supposed to stop the bigger boats. Even the Japanese ship was rather fast and would have easily broken through 2 lines of smaller boats. Even if they hooked onto the boat, it would have dragged them along and capsized them? But these are just my initial thoughts. Still digesting the episode 😬
While I have only seen teasers and summations, I greatly appreciate how the take some of the same scenes from the original t.v. version and enhance them as they had with Mariko's husband's possible sacrifice.
Cosmo Jarvis looks so huge compared to the rest of the characters in the show, I was thinking he's about 1.85 at least or something Turns out he's my height, just 1.78, when everyone around you are at the low end of 1.70cm range, you really look huge I suppose. But also, he has way wider shoulders than Japanese folk around too
I feel like I miss a lot because of the Japanese language and trying to follow along. Thank you for these videos, I love the show and its style so this really helps 😂
in general, it's a very difficult question. Most of the Japanese people know the original history, so I would say Japanese people can see the story somehow. Surely I know the story won't have dragons or zombie.
I am Japanese. I think it's a well-made work. Although it is a fictional story based on historical fact, I really like how the world view and atmosphere have been recreated down to the last detail.
They weren't Blackthorne's diary, they were his logs and rudders. Which did prove he was a pirate to the Spanish and Portuguese. They also had his letters of marque. Which were licenses given to private vessels giving them legal authority to pirate enemy vessels. His rudders were far more important. As without them he couldn't get home even with his ship and crew. The scene with Buntaro was another let down to me. In the book, when he was cornered he didn't just bow and attack. He chucked his sword in the water, and sat down to commit seppuku rather than risk being captured. Which was the ultimate shame to Samurai. Only after Blackthorne begged him to swim and plead with Toronaga to wait, did Toronaga ORDER him to escape. Viewers would have known this already, had Blackthorne and his men's imprisonment in the Pit at Anjiro been more than a 30 second clip. It's all too hurried. They glossed over CHAPTERS after the Erasmus landed. They skipped all of the bonding between Blackthorne and Rodriguez on the galley to Osaka, not to mention showcasing the Engles skill as a pilot. To top it off ,they removed a lot of exposition via Friar Domingo and his tutoring of Blackthorne to the Jesuit operations in the far east, as well as simple Japanese and Japanese Culture. Don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy the show. They are just missing out on so much more of what they have to work with.
I know what happens since I have read the book and seen shogun 1980. But I realy love this new show, but its far to little time to show all with just 10 episodes. So it all feels realy rushed. They should make it into 2-3 seasons at least for what happens in the book. But since this show is a big hit I think they will make some more seasons.
@@Ash_Hudson they can countinue the story of the real caracters from the novel tho. Or just make up something. I sure hope they do, or make some other show about the same time period in japan/asia.
While overall I liked it, it did disapoint me a lot. I did not like the name changes and Anna Saiwa's performance is too flat. I know that she is trying to portray Mariko's sadness but Yoko Shimada was able to show both sides of Mariko at the same time. Their are other minor things as well.
I haven't read the books or know the historical story behind this series but so far despite not having a lot of action I'm really loving the intricate schemes between the characters. My only gripe is that they don't use their real names, I didn't know Toranaga was supposed to be Ieyasu Tokugawa and I was therefore confused to see him bearing the Tokugawa clan symbol.
Few things i didnt like: -fight scene were rushed -when the woman translator started killing trained soldiers with a spear WTF -blackthorne actor has this weird way of talking, dunno if he is faking this accent or what but sometimes it just feels fake -small plot holes are starting -enemy soldiers looking at that one guy having his scene and only attacking when he comes to them? wtf was that some video game
One minor point... You state that in the end Blackthorne's men were allow to leave and return to England. The Erasmus was a Dutch ship and Pilot Major Blackthorne was hired for his expertise as a pilot/navigator. As the ship was Dutch you would have to assume the crew were also dutchmen as the movie makes no mention that the Erasmus had a mixed crew. Or maybe I missed it.
I have a question. Why doesn't Ishido just kill the Anjin? His goal was to overthrow Torunaga and by killing Anjin, he would have the Regents back on his side.
Yabushige wasn't writing a good will letter. He was writing his will because he was convinced he would die. Toranaga wasn't being held for kidnapping Lady Ochiba. That was more of a political statement. She was insurance to make sure that Ishido didn't kill him. That's why he said she was no more a hostage than he was. The reason Toranaga was being held was because he doubled his fife and looked to the others like he was getting ready to make a move against them, which he was. But he could still claim that he wasn't. It was almost as if Toda was accepting his death... that's exactly what he was doing. Blackthorn was left behind because they didn't want a protestant with them... no, it was because they wanted to take blackthorn away from Toranaga. This would ensure that Blackthorn ended up dead or at least under Ishido's control.
Not good english sorry Just finished watching the episode, definely not as good as the previous two but still its still very great. The episode really felt too convenient for everyone, the lady being able to fight toe to toe with the men wearing a kimono, the Portuguese couldve definitely gotten more out of them or just giving them to the bad guys and idea of letting them go knowing they have the anjin who knows what going on with macao. I dont know maybe im just crazy i want to know what you guys think so i could make it make sense to me I sorry about my grammar
It didn't make sense, just like many other changes in the 1st 2 episodes didn't. Because they removed them or changed them from the book and what they used instead had little or no meaning. Since I've already read the book and saw the 1980 masterpiece miniseries that completely changed TV shows forever, I just watch this new version as a simple bonus and shut My mind when errors happen. And, to be honest, Clavell kinda forgot what he wrote after a few thousand pages and made one of his characters their own grandfather. He has errors in his books as well. (Don't remember if the above example was from Noble House or Tai-Pan, but I know it's not in Shogun)
I was expecting the Richard Chamberlain goes crazy to divert that Lord Toranaga was inside the side car. LOL. I guess the Japanese in this version aren't fooled like the 1980 version.
I don't expect agreement but while it was important dialogue was spoken in Japanese, it should have included Dutch Portuguese and Latin. No English was spoken in the novel.
From what is looks like, Mariko and John will most likely be together or have close romantic feelings, with the "pillowing talk" scene and her losing her husband in this episode
True! I feel like she wasn't that happy with him. Their first encounter was really awkward and like she almost feared him! Plus, it seems like what he did was considered honourable, which may be why she was understanding.
Because it's implied he was an authoritarian and abusive. The undertones are very much there. It's been too long since I've seen the original series or read the book to remember precisely how he was presented in those, but in this one, he's not a nice husband, for sure.
Agreed. To have such a poignant moment in the middle of the episode and then end it with Mariko smiling, looking at the two male protagonists swim. Quite a series of events in this episode. I'm very interested in the story of Usama Fuji. Her brief role in this episode was very powerful. These ladies are not spared a moment to grief after enduring such horrific tragedies. That always amazes me. The amount of suffering all these people endured in that time! @@BrainPilot

I don't get why Mariko dont seem to be sad at all. sure it was probably forced marriage during the time and yes she and Johan were forming a relationship or at least some sparkle (I haven't read the book, but based on the way it was shot, I believe it was hinted ) but at that time, women, even if was forced , accepted as that was their fate/purpose since that's how you were born and how you were taught and that's why the woman in first episode wanted to kill herself along with her husband as that's what they knew and what they felt this is the only part I felt not "realistic "

@@arcadeheartHe said of this quality lol.
@@AlFirousstory wise, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, based on real history of the three kingdoms in China after the fall of the Han dynasty, is beyond good and some of the stuff just make you go what?!?! and beats the pants off of Game of Thrones! In fact, one time I heard GoT was slightly based on RotTK! I would not be surprised! The story, spanning nearly 200 years are THAT good…However, since the production was in the early ‘90’s with cheap Chinese production, the graphics and production quality are not to par with modern sets but story, betrayal **looking at you Lu Bu**, strategy, especially those from Zhu Ge Liang are something out of a science fiction story. Watch the movie “Red Cliff” to get a sense of all this.
Just because yall know of dynasty warriors lets me know yall all are some awesome people 😎✊🏾
I appreciate everyone who hasn't seen the 80s version or read the book. You are in for a wild ride!
Shogun and Lonesome Dove are my two favorite books ever. just great stuff.
I want to watch and read the books should I wait for the show to finish airing or go ahead and pick them up? 😂
@@kennyb1588Since u started watching this already I say read the book afterwards.
That's totally fair! I think he will definitely grow on me with time!
Hmmm no…won’t happen.
Yet again…will it?
I think you missed the scene where John saved Toranaga when the guard at the gate was about to find Toranaga in the litter. This contributes a lot to the reason why Toranaga later treated John so nicely after they all escaped
I appreciate you editing video clips to your narration
That takes time
This series is really good. Top shelf performance and great respect for detail. I can't wait for the next episode
Buntaro's sacrifice on the dock scene reminded me of "Jolly Good's" sacrifice on the bridge, in "Last Samurai".
Will he get his ship and crews back ?? And do we see his crews in the upcoming episodes????
@@HeWhoRemaiinsSpoiler:
He does “get his ship and crew back” from what I remember he spends a lot of time with the Japanese that when he reunites with his crew he isn’t fond of them. He also gets his ship back but Toranaga has a master plan and the ship gets burned down and he plans on trapping Blackthorne because he values him as a massive ally. I doubt we see his crew next episode
never been a fan of asian art/culture but this show is conquering me
Asian culture is so rich, glad this show is making you a fan but I encourage you to learn more.
Looks like Hatamoto is going to pillow Mariko 😅. A lot of clouds and rain🤘🏼🙂🤘🏼
Your way of explaining is amazing.
I read this book about 20 years ago it was 800 pages long and easily the best book I've ever read phenomenal I'm so happy they made a movie or a series I mean and I can't wait to watch it
Yeah i've heard some really good things about the book!
well done! amazing series. until next week!
Can't wait!
From what I understand from Toranaga, he kind of wants to recreate Oda Nobunaga's idea with the Ashigaru, a unit formed from farmers with cheap equipment but carrying muskets. With this he manages to transform farmers into soldiers who can cause terror and even kill samurai.
I hope so dude was a menace 😂
I thought maybe some form of Gewalthaufen. (That is the German word for and I couldn’t find an English translation) That dominated the battlefield of Europe for the last 100 years. That would be a mixture of soldiers carrying muskets and pikes
I love this show but unable to watch it until Tuesday night on FX. Nothing spoiled for me as this series i will no doubt watch and re-watch. Really well done and nice summary BrainPilot!
Glad you're enjoying the show and also glad you're enjoying the videos on it 😊
Major SPOILERS: DO NOT read if you want to avoid spoilers.
Martin Alvito is based on a famous portuguese jesuit scholar called João Rodrigues Tçuzu who was fluent in various languages
Cosmos voice reminds me so much of Richard Burton 🤩 It's truly uncanny.
He's got that Tom Hardy 2.0 thing going on too.
Regarding the 'overperformance of lines' ... I've been referring to Cosmo Jarvis in my head as 'Tom Hardly'
*love him. love the show so far.
He does feel very Tom Hardy now you say it!
I agree on the Blackthorne deliveries. Its the only part of the acting on the show that comes off as a bit questionable at times. Action sequences he comes through but dialogue...😬
Great review again👍🏽
Yeah i'm hoping the dialogue improves! thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
True, but there's a lot of history that is connected to it too!
The person playing John Blackthorne is a 3rd rated actor among legendary and well-respected Japanese actors.
Yeah that was the most obvious death fakeout ever, he is definitely coming back in a future episode.
100%!
When I watched this I couldn’t stop thinking of all those examples throughout the book 48 laws of power
Cosmo Jarvis' performance is my favorite part of the show, but I can understand how people could be put off by it.
That's fair! There are elements that I like - i'm just hoping the delivery of his dialogue will improve as the season goes on
Toda Hirokatsu (Buntaru) sacrifice scene is very emotional when Toranaga acknowledges his sacrificial service
Yeah that was a powerful scene for sure!
Buntaro survived, watch the super bowl trailer of the show and you see he was the one who shot an arrow across mariko face.
I figured such as we didn’t see his death on camera
you had to spoil it, eh?
@@Belzedur apologies! I wish I didn't notice that too.
I have to make this acknowledgement: Anna Sawai is such a beautiful woman.
While I have only seen teasers and summations, I greatly appreciate how the take some of the same scenes from the original t.v. version and enhance them as they had with Mariko's husband's possible sacrifice.
Cosmo Jarvis looks so huge compared to the rest of the characters in the show, I was thinking he's about 1.85 at least or something
Turns out he's my height, just 1.78, when everyone around you are at the low end of 1.70cm range, you really look huge I suppose.
But also, he has way wider shoulders than Japanese folk around too
I feel like I miss a lot because of the Japanese language and trying to follow along. Thank you for these videos, I love the show and its style so this really helps 😂
Glad you like them!
Shogun is very similar to the Young Samurai books. If you love Shogun then you'll definitely love the Young Samurai series
Thanks for the recommend.
I to realy like the young Samurai books
I think the husband samurai is not dead yet. will come back next season while Makiro and Blackhorn are in love
Yeah I think so too. I think it will probably be in a few episodes time
John’s voice reminded me of Tom Hardy’s character on Taboo and now I can’t unhear it
Yeah there is a similarity for sure!
The flow of the story is like Las Samurai
i wonder how this show is being received in japan
in general, it's a very difficult question.
@@user-gigi78 Hiroyuki Sanada is a great treasure! He is well received here in the states
Can’t wait what happens next in next week episode.
That guy is all the way into being Blackthorn. He's just at one with it😲😄
Proper good episode. Just finished it. 👌👌
Yeah it was!
They won't make more seasons if the entire story is concluded after season 1 which it looks like is going to happen.
Pretty obvious if you know Japanese history, even if you haven't read the book. Ishido? Toranaga? 😂 Come on, man.
The book is historical fiction. What is there to be disappointed with?
@eodyn7 Well I didn't know it was historical fiction, so I was under the impression it was historically accurate at first.
Few things i didnt like:
-fight scene were rushed
-when the woman translator started killing trained soldiers with a spear WTF
-blackthorne actor has this weird way of talking, dunno if he is faking this accent or what but sometimes it just feels fake
-small plot holes are starting
-enemy soldiers looking at that one guy having his scene and only attacking when he comes to them? wtf was that some video game
Loved this episode 🔥🔥🔥
Same here!
Or maybe I missed it.
couldnt disagree w ur take abt the blackthorne actor more. his delivery feels so natural and
makes his character way more likeable
Love it so far!
I have a question. Why doesn't Ishido just kill the Anjin? His goal was to overthrow Torunaga and by killing Anjin, he would have the Regents back on his side.
Because he realises he'd be next on the hit list with Anjin and Toranaga out of the way. Ishido is not a Christian lord, and is outnumbered.
@@Ash_Hudson if that was so, then what was Ishido's plans before the Anjin came along? He always meant to get rid of Toranaga
@@Indapku That is a great question. I don't think he realised it until after a certain event. I can't remember which now.
because Yabu talked him into his usefulness with his western guns and ability to train a regiment
Either it is intentional or not, the way John acting and speak is how a "barbarian" act in the eye of these high profile Japanese
Not good english sorry
Just finished watching the episode, definely not as good as the previous two but still its still very great. The episode really felt too convenient for everyone, the lady being able to fight toe to toe with the men wearing a kimono, the Portuguese couldve definitely gotten more out of them or just giving them to the bad guys and idea of letting them go knowing they have the anjin who knows what going on with macao. I dont know maybe im just crazy i want to know what you guys think so i could make it make sense to me
I sorry about my grammar
I wouldn't care if I was used to that style of fighting or not. Anything that could give me a possible advantage, I would be willing to try.
I think the offer was for Portuguese bloke to pay 10 000 coins to invest in the Japanese silk trade and then he would get 50% of the profit
I was expecting the Richard Chamberlain goes crazy to divert that Lord Toranaga was inside the side car. LOL. I guess the Japanese in this version aren't fooled like the 1980 version.
I agree, the actor playing Blackthorn is the weakest link. Maybe it’s because I can’t get pass the way Richard Chamberlain played the character
I like Richard's portrayal, but this guy is more convincing as both an Englishman and a pilot.
thanks for the video
He deffo gonna fix his ship and get his canons back and use his pirate tactics
I don't expect agreement but while it was important dialogue was spoken in Japanese, it should have included Dutch Portuguese and Latin. No English was spoken in the novel.
Hiroyuki for an Emmy I’m calling it
Interesting that in your speculation you don’t treat this miniseries as being based on a bestselling novel, whose plot developments are well-known.
From what is looks like, Mariko and John will most likely be together or have close romantic feelings, with the "pillowing talk" scene and her losing her husband in this episode
Yeah it definitely feels like that doesn't it!
Quick question. Why did you drop the plate smashing sound effect you used to have at the end of every video?
continued brilliance
Clearly, you haven’t read the book this series is based on…which I guess is both good and bad. Interesting review ! TY
I love this show
Much better crazy Blackthorn scene than original series.
From the start you make a mistake. Yabushiga san is writing his will-testament, as he is convinced that Toranaga sama will kill him.
Why do they call john a pirate and not a privateer? Since they are going around only destroying Portuguese bases.
Because from their perspective someone who raids, plunders and destroys their bases is a pirate. Your only a privateer to your own side.
This episode airs at 10 PM EST today, how is there a review on it already, How early did it come out for others since there reviews already?
I was surprised how pragmatic Mariko was after Buntaro's ultimate sacrifice.
I’m confused, is the lady Kiki now Ishido’s captive and how does it effect Toronaga. Was she collateral damage I’ve not read the book so I’m wondering what will happen too her and all the remaining vassal’s in Osaka castle.
Has anyone noticed that Cosmo's voice and diction sound like Richard Burton?
best new show since the witches and vikings valhala
next season imma need them to get some better contact lenses for blackthorn lol
I don't get why Mariko dont seem to be sad at all.
sure it was probably forced marriage during the time
and yes she and Johan were forming a relationship or at least some sparkle (I haven't read the book, but based on the way it was shot, I believe it was hinted )
but at that time, women, even if was forced , accepted as that was their fate/purpose since that's how you were born and how you were taught and that's why the woman in first episode wanted to kill herself along with her husband as that's what they knew and what they felt
this is the only part I felt not "realistic "
Please read the book...the amount of stuff that is missing is painful.
