Very nicely done. Congrats on your 2d place. Interesting way to tackled that cockpit. Next time keep the wings on when you paint. I think it will make your life a little easier.
A general question. I am building a 1/7 Hasegawa Hellcat F6F-3/5. I want to do it "wheels up" but the tires are way too thick...the landing gear covers will not fit over them. To make it work I need about 1/3 of the thickness. I cannot figure out a way to cut them. Any suggestions? I appreciate your thoughts.
So, I think the easiest way would be to lay some sand paper down flat on a flat surface, preferably something with some bite, like 320 or less, and just start sanding down the wheel on the side the will face the inside of the wheel well until you get it to a thickness that will allow you to properly close the landing gear covers over it. Hope that makes sense, if not let me know and I will try and come up with another way of explaining it.
Oh, your build here is awesome, and is one of my favorites I've been viewing lately. A certain contest quality plane! I will see if I can find the article for you, from about 2018, about a 1/48 Hellcat build ( where the builder made working folding wings). It was super, super, informative about most details of the F6F. Some times nowadays, I'll put pilot in, drape seat belts over the top of seat bar on rear bulkhead, and attach belts to pilot's shoulders, and glue the canopy closed. Almost impossible to see interior details, or a lack of with the Canopy closed. Did you know Eduard makes a photo etch wheel well set, and is deep enough for scale effect?
Your words are too kind. I would absolutely love that article you referenced, if you can locate it. I'm adding a link to my photo album from the contest. It was really small, but a lot of fun: imgur.com/gallery/P8E0kI7 I wasn't aware Eduard made a wheel well, set, I'll have to look into that. Thanks again!
I love your paint job. Great paint fading effect also, yet retains pretty blue look. Are those cowl flaps separate, or maybe I can't tell from photo? I believe on the full size plane they have inner lip on which cowl flap slides over when opening or closing, thus not having a look of each cowl flap being a separate piece. Good choice replacing the Eduard prop. Great build, great plane, great kit. I know the Eduard landing gear oleo struts are pretty extended like the plane would sit with light load or even in flight. I love your use of pilot and detailing also.
Thanks for your comment. my original plan was to have the cowl flaps fully open, I'd seen a few photos and video of Hellcats that had just landed and they always seemed to have them opened and that was kind of the look I was going for. I cut out the flaps but in the end decided not to fully open them. I also didn't find sufficient images of the inside of the cowl flaps to scratch build their mechanism. Regarding the landing gear struts, I had contemplated replacing them, since the Eduard parts have numerous scale and accuracy issues, mainly the oleo scissors being under scale, and the issue you mentioned above, but I was building this for a competition and was running out of time and choose that I could live with it. Still, I had a lot of fun with this kit and it gave me a lot of experience scratch building. I would like to try this kit again in the future and maybe correct some of these issue I didn't get to. Thanks for watching!
Super job! Yeah, that insignia was used in June to July 1943 but I haven't been able to find the exact dates. Nice touch with the seat belts extending outside. And the carrier deck base is sweet.
Great video! I am just about to start building this kit. Basic airbrushing question (as I am new to airbrushing.) I keep getting droplets while spraying (Iwata Eclipse) and coverage is rather spotty. I am using air pressure at 18PSI and have thinned the acrylic to milk consistency. Any thoughts? I appreciate your help!
Based on your description, your needle might not be fully seated in the nozzle, causing a small gap for paint to seep through. It also might be that you are over thinning your paint. Depending on the brand of acrylic paint, the general recommendation to thin to the consistency of milk might not always be the best. Double check your needle, then play around with different thinner ratios.
@@HammerheadModelMaking My apologies for the late reply. Thanks for your advice. I have a lot to learn about airbrushing! Playing with the mixture ratios is helping. Another question, do you primer everything (all parts) before painting the actual color! I sure have trouble with the clear parts too (canopy frames etc. can’t primer those.) I appreciate your help!!
@@eagle5600 yeah, airbrushing really takes time and practice, but once it starts clicking you’ll really enjoy it. Keep it up. Yes, with few exceptions, I prime everything before painting. Even canopies. If you mask your canopy carefully, you can prime it the same as other parts. A few of my videos show different ways to mask canopies.
@@HammerheadModelMaking Great, thank you again. I masked the canopy of my Avenger TBM-3 dying a pre-cut kit. I didn’t prime. When I removed the masks about 50% of the paint on the various frame parts. came off with them! But hey, it looks weathered! LOL. (I’ll have to redo.)
@@eagle5600 Priming will help mitigate the paint pealing off, the primer creates a better surface for the paint to adhere to, but also, what you could do, right before you are ready to peal off the masks, use a fresh hobby knife and gently score around the mask, this can also help reduce the paint pealing off. Cheers!
This is a magnificent build!! I love Grumman aircraft. Can you maybe build a F4F Wildcat? I always have trouble with the landing gear. Thanks so much for sharing your skills and the time it takes to make videos. Great work!!
I also love the Grumman aircraft. I've got a 72nd scale Wildcat in my build queue that I will be able to get to later this year, keep an eye out for it! Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for the comments, I will be building the kit again in the future, so I’ll keep that in mind.
Very cool that the people running the competition at your local shop aren’t super anti-weathering
Good thing!
Great job. I'd like if you make the ground-surface or it's a comercial item. Thank you!
The base was made from individual strips of balsa wood and some photoetch products for the tie-down strips.
