      Sure would be BUT that’s not our property. It was on the farm we were cutting on. We aren’t farmers - custom harvesters.

      Thanks for subscribing, Dustin! Yes, we do have a pretty sweet job. It’s been a great way to raise a family. I’m glad you enjoy the videos. I started doing this last summer and posted it on our Facebook page so thought I would try RUclips. Hoping to educate a few more people about the job we do. 😊

      The industry of custom harvesting dates back a long time. Probably as far as the early 1900’s. But it became a bigger, better known Industry during WWII.
      A good article to read - livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe40s/machines_05.html
      My grandpa did custom harvesting when he was a young man. He used a pull-type Rumely combine. He continued doing it locally until the early 1950’s. It was at that time he started following the harvest from south to north. His final year on the road was 1989 (77 years old).
      I went on harvest with my grandparents for the first time in 1974. I was 12 heads old. I was supposed to help grandma with the crew but I fell in love with the combine.
      I met a young man while on harvest (not that year). He was their hired man. I ended up marrying him in 1982. That fall, we purchased our own pre-used Massey Ferguson combine. And, as they say, the rest is history.
      We’ll never be rich. We live in a very old home and drive old cars. But what we did do was create a nice way-of-life. We raised four daughters on the road. They all grew up and are on their own. They each had a good head on their shoulder and a very strong work ethic. So...we were a success. We will never have a lot of money. But, in the end, is that what it’s all about?
      It’s getting more and more difficult to make the payments for the expenses that are incurred. The farmers are making the same amount of money per bushel as they were in the mid 70’s. And the price of equipment, insurance and on-the-road expenses are beginning to take a toll. Not only on us, but the industry as a whole. Less and less wheat acres are being grown and more and more farmer-owned combines because of the summer acres being replaced with fall crops. The acres of wheat are necessary to make it all work.
      I’m afraid we could see more changes in the industry - less and less crews on the road.
      What started as a necessity in 1944, turned into a much-needed industry. One that has been the backbone of the American farmer. One that built our family into what it is today. And for this, I am so very thankful.
      Thanks for asking!!!

    Hi Tracy, after all these years of harvesting wheat do you get nervous when you're in a new area and you have to take a load into the elevator? Do your prefer being in the combine or hauling the wheat? Hope you have a good 2020 harvest and things go smoothly!

    • @ZeorianHarvestingTrucking
      @ZeorianHarvestingTrucking  4 года назад +1

      I really don’t get nervous when I go into a new place. I just want/need to be sure of the flow of trucks before just going. The people at the elevators are usually so nice and so understanding! I would much rather be in the combine!!!! The love of the combine began the very first day my Grandpa let me drive his machine. It will be something I will miss so very much when Jim decides he’s done with traveling the highways and biways.
      Thank you so much for your comment and questions!

    Typically how many days does wheat harvest last ?

    • @ZeorianHarvestingTrucking
      @ZeorianHarvestingTrucking  4 года назад +1

      We typically seem to be in one area 10 days to two weeks. However, we’ll be moving a little more quickly this year in Kansas because we have three very close jobs. Depends on the weather and how many acres we have to cut.

      I had to rewatch this to see what you meant. He wasn’t upset. This was the first time this combine was in wheat so he was on edge. Not upset. The job is stress filled and he doesn’t try to hide it.
