im a local in the bc ssbu scene and also currently go to the hs big d was playing basketball at, hes in so many photos around the trophy case room its crazy, ive had two gym teachers reference him before when on the topic of highschool basketball, he was so good
I was in hs with him in the same grade. He dominated everyone at smash and asked for money matches a lot XD And stood a good head above the rest of the school but was one of those gentle giants and ran around in a Nintendo shirt lol
@@KyleTremblayTitularKtrey aw dude wait thats so much like dawson haha. Hey if you ever wanted I'm still hosting smash tournamnets at the school, if you're still in town maybe we could plan smthn out and if you've got any remaining pictures of the brackets or events you guys used to run, we could have like a mini reunion or smthn lmao
@knarf7744 ngl smash wasnt my game, our friend group usually stomped me at that. I wasn't part of the smash community in any real way. Instead I got rather good at mariokart and we'd play that a lot. The main reason I know smash beyond N64 playing pikachu is dawson being amazing at it and pubstomping the rest of our friendgroup.
Also bro he barely had to jump to dunk it was a funny little hop. I used to be so damn proud I could dunk a basketball and I was training parkour and jumping and then this giant that was my friend barely had to put his arms over his head lol
Dawson is the nicest guy in person too. I'm in his local scene but i sont come through often and idk he's just a normal cool dude. Had fun with him even getting clapped in round 1 lol. Awesome doc. 👏 Didn't know he was a baller.
I actually talked about his time with Melee and P:M in my interview, it just didn't make the final cut. With the level of care and polish they already put into editing the entirety of this 46 minute beast, I can't fault them too much!
seeing him play Eric in project M with Jake TO'ing at my first smash touranment in the P4K era was the best introduction to the community. Was so warm right off the hop to an old man interested in super smash bros.
Incredible editing on this. How did you manage to get footage of every technical intricacy that the players talk about from matches *betweeen Big D and those players*? That shit feels so good to watch. Like a perfectly cited research article.
When I met dawson at my very first smash 4 tournament as annoying high schooler, he was the friendliest guy possible. He played a few friendlies when I asked and demolished me and we got to sit on the commentators couch and took a picture. It's little moments like that that made me so happy to go to tournaments and root for him.
seeing and hearing all his local friends that he grew up with and played with all these years come out and support him so hard still is so wholesome, all those local rivalries to playing the best in the world is so inspiring i love it
I got to hang out with Dawson for a bit at Genesis 4 and he is just the nicest guy ever. Always cheered for him after that (and before, being a fellow Canadian) and to see him get to this level is so cool. It honestly couldn't happen to a better person. Also, masterclass video. I love that it was so personal, being entirely his words and the words of the BC scene. It might not get a ton of views, but you guys did great work here.
My first experience of Big D was during the GrandSlam tournament in Richmond which I attended, and the most memorable moment was of TOs making him eat a coffee crisp onstage before bracket started
I remember seeing Big D before he left Canada much and thinking "if this dude could travel, he would kick ALL SORTS OF ASS" and then he did. It was great to see and I hope to see more
I remember when I fractured my arm, I decided to go to a local and played Dawson R1. We play our first game and as he’s about to say he goes “Woah you have a broken arm!” One of the nicest players imaginable and it’s amazing that he’s finally reaching new highs
The thing is about ice climbers is the character takes so much skill to learn that when you lose to them you just have to respect the player for putting in the time and effort to do those desync combos
i am from BC and big D was always known as a hidden undiscovered boss. near the end of smash 4 capptain L was rated 24th on the pgr. Captain L is one of the most fast paced pikachu players ever, i would say he is even faster paced than players like void. because of this, he was one of the only top players that knew how to sdi out of bayo combos consistantly. But we all knew that BC had an even better player and he played fukkin D3. fukin D3. big D never traveled, so when we saw him go to goml i remember watching on the moist stream and moist had no idea who big D was and i told him that he was in for a fukkin treat. the rest i guess is history, i am so hapy to see a team like luminosity pick him up! the ghuy is a smash legend. nobody does what he does. and captain L needs to pick up pika again
32:08 I feel like I'm missing context here... Why was he able to switch out Ken? Is there some rule that I'm not aware of? I don't understand why playing Ken at a previous tourney, constitutes a switch.
Not at all an expert on this but I think this is the TOs perspective: you want people to go to your tourney. How do you do that? By getting good players that more people want to see, so you make it that more top players get easier positions, that's the basis of seeding. Now, spectators, come to a tournament to see a good show and so if the only matches you get to see are sets that already happened a week ago, you don't really want to see that again. So the TOs try to get new sets and new matchups or maybe some players that haven't fought for a while against each other. That's probably what was going on
If there’s anyone else who deserves a story, it’s Glutonny. Mostly because he is the worlds best Wario and one of if not the only Wario competitive smash player left. (Tweek in my mind doesn’t count cause his Wario is very infrequent)
If there are somehow any American Football fans in this comments section. I just wanted to point out how much Big D looks like retired New York Giants QB Eli Manning!
Holy shit the editor of this video deserves an award, it's perfect.
Thanks for noticing my hours of hard work 🙏

amazing documentary, thanks again for allowing me to be a part of it! :)

this was amazing. just finished watching it end to end. thank y'all for your service at documenting legends of esports. :)
Our pleasure!
💯
Wow a 46 minute documentary chock-full of interviews from prominent members of the BC scene
Dude seeing a documentary with one of my favourite players in the smash ultimate scene is so awesome, love you BIG D and thank you Akshon for this!
the most impressive part about big d is the fact that he's a certified hooper
I love your pfp! Nb gang 💯💯💯

It wasn't mentioned but Big D was also PR'ed in BC for melee as well. He is a true master of smash bros

46 minutes of top-notch editing in such an engaging format. Never been into Smash, but i watched the whole thing. Dawson is such a wholesome dude

The D of considerable size
I love this extreme hardcore cyberpunk music covering the backdrop of the super happy and wholesome Ice Climbers from Nintendo. 😂
Big D is quite the legend, the fact that he was an old time Icies main back in Brawl and PM and then returned to the character years later is sick
This was a suuuuper dope documentary, absolutely loved it
Hey bro, stop working to pay for food and come watch Akshon
I wish it was just food :(

LOOK MA, IM IN THE BACKGROUND POPPING OFF NUMEROUS TIME FOR OUR LOCAL CHAMP BIG D! 💀
Hey spritefire
This documentary is an insanely well done production. Bravo to Akshon Esports. Big D seems like a stand-up guy.
Hoping you guys made a documentary about MenaRD one day 🙏🏻
I honestly don't understand why he isn't more famous
The vid is so well done! Nice work!

I think the most insane thing I learned from this video was that Ken was on a season of Survivor. Like, what?
He also was a King Dedede legend. Love his King Ddd
Amazing video, I loved the focus on the perspectives on his friends from his local scene.
The perfect video to listen too while I move in for my second year of college
Was listening to it while visiting storage. Going into my first year this fall.
Yo what the heck?! This is awesome, I never though I’d see this in my home screen
I remember seeing Big D before he left Canada much and thinking "if this dude could travel, he would kick ALL SORTS OF ASS" and then he did. It was great to see and I hope to see more
I really love ice climbers, and Big D is playing them like a master piece.
One of my favorite ult players.
the legend is here
Finally a video that shows the Brawl competitive community. Hate the now extremely popular narrative that Brawl wasn't a competitive game.

Slightly off topic, but when I first tried desync combos I found it so weird that your controller doesn’t rumble when nanas hits connect.
