The fact that Mang0 spiked his controller becouse he was the one to lose the major to a Yoshi and then instantly goin for a hug becouse it was aMSa just warms my heart.
As you say, Mang0 didn't want to lose at all, much less to a Yoshi; there definitely was competitive passion in that throw that we can all empathize with, but he is nonetheless a great sport (and the GOAT). The Big House is a really important tournament for Mang0. I’m not sure why but he seems to want to win those more than other majors. Add onto that the magnitude of the tournament that year and how close he was to winning… I don’t think aMSa’s character was why he threw his controller.

This is the greatest romanticism of sport I’ve seen since Moneyball and and I shed tears at “aMSa DID IT!” It’s impossible not to root for aMSa. Incredible work.
I’ve watched this video several times since you first posted it. I watched this video three times while I road-tripped ~14 hours each way to compete in a Magic: the Gathering Regional Championship. Your representation of aMSa’s competitive spirit, his drive to win, his humility in losing coupled with his hunger to come back stronger next time… it’s made me cry almost every time I’ve watched this video. This feeling when seeing aMSa’s story represented this way lights a fiery passion in my core that carried me to compete in my first major tournament in my own discipline, and although I lost, I took it with grace as aMSa would and committed to coming back again but stronger, with more practice, more commitment, etc. Thank you AsumSaus. I’ve watched your videos for a long time, and you’ve consistently been the GOAT of Melee content, and this project is undoubtedly your Magnum Opus as far as I’m concerned. I sincerely hope in the time since you made this video that you’ve been doing well, and I’m committed to watching whatever you post next.

That "aMSa did it" transition is so sick. It perfectly encapsulates what that moment had to be like, all the air, the noise, pulled out of the room in anticipation that the goat doesn't do something unfathomable. All for it to explode into excitement and joyous triumphant chaos. Top 3 smash doc all time.

cody really did NOT wanna win like that, in any world. i bet if you asked him he would rather have lost than win from that SD. although in hindsight, it make's amsa's big house win way more dramatic, so maybe it all worked out.
@@slepy7304the best part of that clip is that of you asked someone who they thought won, they would almost certainly say amsa. Cody with his hands on his head and amsa patting him on the back and holding the handshake on his side, smiling. Incredible sportsmanship
And what's incredible is in the end it wasn't about winning for him as much as it was about being able to say "I TOLD YOU YOSHI WAS A GOOD CHARACTER!" Point well proven and this guy is impossible to dislike.
aMSa is a competitive legend. The man accepts defeat with a smile on his face and comes back stronger every time. The man is truly an icon of spirit and persistence.
Dude. Imagine quitting your job to pursue smash full time, only for covid 19 to hit and totally screw over your new source of income. No wonder he lost his luster after losing that match against fiction for a moment. Last straw on the camel's back, ya know? This was such a good video!
I came to the comments to see if anyone else cried. I haven’t played this game in so long and didn’t even expect to get gripped into watching it all but I cried multiple times
The thing is, I still don't think he proved Yoshi is high tier. I think he just proved that he's a fucking monster with a mid character. (Which he had already proved repeatedly, but you know what I mean)
I think Yoshi is the perfect example of when a character's skill ceiling is so high compared to the competition that even the most experienced players in the world take decades to realize it. Yoshi's tech that makes them good at all is unbelievably precise and all their other characteristics are a far departure from the other stats and abilities to the point where you basically have to build your muscle memory from the ground up; not viable for learning multiple characters, really. Even so aMSa managed to reach that skill ceiling, which allows you to basically permanently chain combos in a fashion unlike any other character. The fact that aMSa spent a majority of his smash career getting only a third of the playtime other players got in, getting minimal sleep for his efforts, while STILL maintaining his grades and job? I'm surprised that Hungrybox was the one that got picked out as the 'never will there ever' person from EmpLemon's video, as aMSa's career path is infinitely more complex and enamoring.
Tbf didn't EmpLemon video on Hungrybox came out way way before aMSa first major win? I think at that point he only had mewtwoking beat and 1-2 Gods a couple of times. aMSa was probably such an underdog that even Emp overlooked him, because Hungrybox and Jigglypuff as a whole started from better place then Yoshi, also Hungrybox story is just a bit more dramatic so to say, so there's that
@@danielsurvivor1372 Oh shit, you're right. Well, ignore all the other points; what only matters is that his Never Ever video on Hungrybox came out 3 years ago, while Big House 10 was held a little less than a year ago. The tournie that marked him as something comparable to the five gods would only happen 3 years after this video was POSTED. Realistically, the editing for such a long video like this could have started 4 years ago. So him promoting aMSa wouldn't really have even been possible with the information at the time. Really goes to show how meteoric his rise really is, when you compare him to the five gods.
It's always funny when people talk about EmpLemon's video and criticize it. It was a product of it's time, and almost 4 years old now. A pre-covid time. Back when HBox was the top player, and had been the top player for 3 years, with a completely dominant streak of wins to back it up. Mango just had the worst year of his career in 2018, a year before the video came out. He went from winning an average of 5 tournaments a year, to only making it to finals twice, with mixed results in 2019. At the time, aMSa hadn't even finished top 3 against US players, and as this video notes, he hadn't traveled much to non-Japanese tournaments back then. No one knew if aMSa would make it or crash. Plus, there was a lot less content on aMSa back then, so it wouldn't have been as interesting of a video. Half of Emp's video is about HBox's personal struggles, which aMSa doesn't seem to have. Emp's video notes that the tides were turning. That newer players were finally reaching the strength of the five gods. It's almost prophetic how true it was. Back in January of 2020, the only non-gods to win a major were Leffen, who everyone knew was good, and Plup, who had just proven himself in 2018 and 2019. But now, not just aMSa, but other players like Zain, Jmook, and Cody are top players. The current 2023 Summer SSBMRank has exactly zero of the gods in the top 5 players. It's safe to say that the era where the five gods dominated melee is over. Emp's video talked about it as if the five gods were still around, but I think it's safe to say that a lot has changed in almost 4 years since it released.
One thing that I love about this video is the foreshadowing. The seemingly unnecessary mentions of how Mango won EVO 2013 and how he won smash summit 12, along with aMSa vs Cody at Double Down really build up to the final part of the video.
It took me 12 hours before I had time to watch this video and it felt like forever. I’ve been WAITING for this story to be told and you’re the perfect one to do it. Great video, congratulations aMSa :)
@@Terionic Melee is a kids game. It's a bunch of Nintendo characters fighting eachother, the competitive part is a small community run part of the game.
There's so much about aMSa that just hits me really hard How he was determined to prove a lot of people who doubted him from the start wrong sticking with what he values and not taking the easy way out. How he overcomes a disadvantage (not being able to practice in covid, yoshi being a worse character etc.) while still being able to be the most positive person in the entire experience though ALL of that. And the pure determination and dedication to his dream. I'm so proud of him and ngl I need his attitude in life
The way that mango goes from smashing his controller to hugging aMSa shows how much of sportsman he is. He was visibly upset at losing, but even more more visibly supportive of aMSa finally winning.
aMSa inspires me! The mentality of "I'd rather lose with my favorite character than win with the best one" is something I wish more players would adopt. I think it's so impressive to be THE representative, becoming synonymous with your character and pushing them to unbelievable heights. Hat tip to a real life GYOAT.
Seeing axe and amsa chilling in the background of summit 6... the two highest representations of their mid tier characters. And that they still are amazing friends to this day. Gives me goose bumps.
Just watched this doc again and I'm still blown away by how well you crafted this from a narrative perspective. In 50 minutes you introduced the game and amsa through his first time playing against good player in japan, allowing people who don't know anything about melee to have a general understanding. Then once you give enough of the background you take that introduction of amsa into a character study of someone who doesn't give up when adversity strikes both in and out of game. your super tight editing makes it feel a hero's journey where the viewer is practically cheering on amsa's big house run, (even myself who watched it live and know how that amsa did it before even clicking on the video). I'd love to see more of this style of video from you using melee content as a medium
I know im not even halfway thru but i have to comment on how heartwarming it was to see Mew2King smile a little while shaking aMSa's hand after watching a mini compilation of him basically brooding while shaking other players hands. Truly shows how infectious aMSa's smile is
It really does seem like aMSa had this charm to him that made even the most jaded of melee players smile and not care about losing. Every time it's like you can hear their thoughts of "oh, I was beat by a Yoshi"
Probably one of those things where he's been playing the game so long, losing a set to a Yoshi was totally novel and fresh. Like seeing a new chapter open up in the same old book you've been reading for a decade.
It's the kinda thing you can't replicate in fictional storytelling since it's almost always gonna end in the main character getting a triumph. But in real life, anything can happen
I’m currently driving my way to becoming the only Ganon main to win a major in ssbu, this inspires me so much to reach that goal. I love this game so much and I love the people who make it great like aMSa. You will see your friend at the top.
37:30 was the one of the most heartbreaking/heartwarming moments tbh the way Cody kinda felt bad because he didn’t want to win like that either. the way they’re consoling each other is just truly heartwarming
52:24 i can absolutely TELL that this hug comes from pure, unadulterated love for your opponent. i can’t imagine how much emotion mango was going through. proud, upset, but full of love.
As a physics student now I have no idea how you start competing in tournaments like that while also studying physics. This shit takes so much time each day to stay on pace. Even before that crazy work schedule aMSa's climb was incredibly impressive
Undergraduate degree, pretty likely. PhD, maybe not unless you have enough brains to avoid hitting research walls. My free time didn't tank until I was in the final 3 years of grad school (still watched plenty of amsa while performing lab maintenance).
Yeah srsly I do physics at MIT and traveling 12 hours every couple of weeks to compete in a different country, as well as train every day just sounds ludicrous to me

“You know, there are plenty of players all over the world even better than me.” That is such a great way of lighting a fire in someone. To push them a little and cause them to beat the best of the best with a low tier character.
Perceived low tier. In actuality, the sheer skill ceiling, goofy design, and unique attack pattern are what makes many dismiss them, as both are deep investments. If you can make them, though? The results speak for themselves.
this is literally the kinds of stuff that makes legends legends 99/100, most people would scoff at that, or dismiss it as an impossible challenge, or simply laugh at it but the 1/100, there is a person like aMSa
I like that both player focused documentaries show a different section of the leaderboard. The hbox one really only showed the highest of high eshalons of players. While the amsa documentary shows a lot more.of the top 100 as a whole
It's the brutal hit that comes when it starts mattering. When he was just doing it on the side, it was all for fun. He was taking Yoshi to the top tiers, that was already good enough. But when it becomes your full-time occupation, when the primary focus of your life is getting Yoshi to that top finish, and you just can't do it? That hurts.

@@MooMooCow95 If one single man out of a worldwide thousands can officially slap a decades long fighting game tierlist in the face by propelling one of the previously-deemed worst characters into the upper-mid tier -- if not higher now -- just because he genuinely liked the character that much, who's to say YOU can't pull off something more reasonable by comparison? aMSa is a true underdog, through and through, and an absolute inspiration for even the most jaded of us, so go out there and have some goddammed confidence! 👉
As someone who used to main Yoshi for fun, the sheer passion and determination of this wholesome man sent chills down my spine and warmed my heart. Incredible video!
Same, I used to play yoshi when I was a kid casually against my friends and always whoop them. Traces of what aMsa does was in my play, but I was convinced in later years to put him down for more meta characters. I don’t even play Smash Bros let alone watch the competitive scene of Smash Bros. I watched this video from start to end yesterday. I keep coming back to it just to watch the ending. Chills went down my back when aMSa was able to pull through with the win. What an incredible story. Also great editing and story telling from AsumSaus. One of the best videos I’ve ever watched on this website.
I’m in the same boat the way that AdamSaus can concisely yet thoroughly explain things to Laymans, and captivate you to feel the stakes of something you may not even begin to understand to its major depths. An S tier video ever time.
Not only the amazing narrative but the passion and excitement and anticipation! Look at those childlike eyes of Bobby looking at Toph, and their smiles!!
i’ve never seen a melee video in my entire life, i don’t know anything about the game, and i still shed a tear with the end, i fucking love this video man, keep up the good work, now i’m an aMSa fan
It's not quite as difficult to hit all the parries that aMSa hits due to how he positions himself. It's still insanely skillful to put yourself in these positions, but you see him crouching under attacks all the time which allows him to hit shield and immediately parry it because his shield pops up into the attack that he's ducking under.

@@92SMIF Don't worry brother, Im there too. I remember the APEX 2014 cheering for this guy. Seeing him now actually made me cry! He fucking did it!
The thing is, I still don't think he proved Yoshi is high tier. I think he just proved that he's a fucking monster with a mid character. (Which he had already proved repeatedly, but you know what I mean)
Cry gang I cried too ❤
I think Yoshi is the perfect example of when a character's skill ceiling is so high compared to the competition that even the most experienced players in the world take decades to realize it.
@@TextualDeviantthat and also hbox was supremely dominate, w like 3 yrs in a row as the #1 player
FYI, hungrybox also graduated from college and kept a job during a majority of his smash career.
Fair play to Cody, you could tell he didn't want to win like that
Don't think any legit competitor would want to win like that. There were no winners that day.

Same - I think this video is proof that with a great character, story, and visuals/editing the topic of the video doesn't matter
You took the words right out of my mouth. I totally agree!!
I’m in the same boat the way that AdamSaus can concisely yet thoroughly explain things to Laymans, and captivate you to feel the stakes of something you may not even begin to understand to its major depths. An S tier video ever time.
46:15 I love how Bobby and Toph framed an epic moment of melee's history with their commentary
Absolutely nobody does it like them. They can bring the hype for any tourney in any era
They have some real talent too. The way they bring the history and the narrative is truly professional shit
Not only the amazing narrative but the passion and excitement and anticipation! Look at those childlike eyes of Bobby looking at Toph, and their smiles!!
Bobby and Toph are the absolute best at bringing you the history between two players and framing the build to the set
These commentators are hilarious 😂
Chills. CHIIIIILLLS.
Wait. Is that THE balls man? I didn’t know you watched melee??
Ikr
Such an amazing story told in such and engaging way
Yesss ‘‘twas so hype
I genuinely teared up near the end
omg is that the circle toons hd from the circle toons hd? the beans guy? omg ur so cool
i’ve never seen a melee video in my entire life, i don’t know anything about the game, and i still shed a tear with the end, i fucking love this video man, keep up the good work, now i’m an aMSa fan
6:40 this is such the best visual I’ve ever seen to inform the viewer how exactly difficultly satisfying it is to hit a parry
@@Matthill121i didn't notice that at all, pretty good technique to parry since you don't need tons of consistency with it
Honestly aMSa timing out HBox was one of the most amazing things I've seen!
the mid tiers get their revenge on hbox for genesis 6 grands.
It’s the single greatest case of “tasting your own medicine” in the melee scene
It made my heart beat crazy
That just felt like karma in some form, I just imagine hbox screaming on his head about this not happening.
Watching this with Japanese subtitles makes it even more epic for me. Especially the final match where aMSa finally wins.
This is probably one of the best RUclips vids I’ve ever seen. How can you not love melee
I’ve never been more proud of someone I’ve never met in my life. What an absolutely amazing person and inspiration.
Right?? Can’t believe this video made my heart beat so fast for a complete stranger!!
