    • @TheBioReef
      @TheBioReef  6 лет назад +1

      Ash I added the first acros a couple of weeks after starting the tank... I cycled the dry rock in a brute garbage container and I moved a couple of bits of life rock from my nano when I started the reefer. I had not detectable ammonia or nitrite 2 days after running water and I can tell that critters on the life rock where still alive so I added the fish right away and the acros a week later

      Hi Salman. good luck with your tank. I seeded my tank with live rock from my nano. i didn't really have to wait for the nitrogen cycle to establish (because of the bio filter provided by the live rocks). I added a few SPS a few weeks after tank startup

    • @sal3011
      @sal3011 5 лет назад +1

      Sure! Will do that! But we in India don't have much choice about selecting corals. Plus nothing n sps is cheap. Least would be a 40$ frag. Corals are banned here in India ! Not even maricultured are allowed to be kept. Some rules they have set! They themselves need some awareness on this stuff.. Well, will surely update. • @TheBioReef
      @TheBioReef  6 лет назад +1

      you heard correctly, 0.2 to 0.3 ppm (not 0.03 or 0.04)... i know that is considered 'really high' and perhaps catastrophically high by some. But, i let my phosphates rise above 0.1 ppm when i was battling DINOs, they stayed at between 0.2 and 0.3 for about 4 month, and went as high as 0.4 ppm for one week. Nitrates where around 10 ppm; my SPS looked great!!! I've since started growing chaeto in my fuge, and my nitrates are about 2.5 ppm and my phosphates are 0.1 ppm now.

    You mean phosphates 0.02-0.03 (not 0.2-0.3) right? 0.3 would be suuuuper high I think? Great work the tank looks terrific, I like your vids!

    • @TheBioReef
      @TheBioReef  5 лет назад +1

      actually, you hear correctly 0.2 to 0.3, although now my levels are between 0.15 to 0.2 ppm (measured by hanna ULR checker). I know this sounds really high based on the 'wisdom' of keeping nitrates and phosphates near zero. But in my tank, and many others, these levels don't seem to cause issues or noticeable algae in the display

    • @DiepBlueC
      @DiepBlueC 5 лет назад +1

      That is great! I was just going on articles like this one that seem to indicate that calcification, or growth, would be strongly inhibited with high phosphate levels. reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-09/rhf/index.php however, your growth looks great so obviously there is more to it than just a phosphate number! Cheers.

    • @TheBioReef
      @TheBioReef  5 лет назад

      yeah, i've read Randy's articles... and also read the peer-reviewed literature that he cites (the manipulative experiments that elevated nitrates and phosphates and documented reduction in growth)... i have a few ideas of why perhaps we should expect a 1:1 extrapolation from increasing nutrients in the great barrier reef to our reef tank. 1) all other factors are not equal; so possibly, high nitrates and phosphates can be tolerated at higher that NSW alkalinity / calcium, etc. 2) Most of my SPS have been in aquaculutre for a while; perhaps they adapted. its commonly assumed that wild colonies are more finicky to keep than the 'named' acros that have been in tanks for 20 years or so; perhaps there was an acclimation / artificial selection that has allowed some corals to tolerate high nutrient conditions. Either way, according to 'theory', my tank should be full of algae and show low-no growth... but it doesn't. why? is my tank unique in some way, or is it perhaps that the theory is not all worked out yet....
      thanks for your comments by the way, i appreciate thoughtful discussions! cheers!

    • @TheBioReef
      @TheBioReef  2 года назад

      You can still get a few things for $20 to $30. You typically get better deals from home reefers vs LFS, but I think some of price increases are justified. It’s expensive to run a reef and the costs of electricity and reagents are always increasing. So it make sense for the frag prices to also increase. The vast majority of reefers sell frags as a cost recovery mechanism for their expensive reefs. Just my thoughts!

    What putty are you using?

      @TheBioReef  5 лет назад

      Most of the time, i use the TLF putty. But i just tried the DD putty and i've been liking it a bit better. It tends to stay pliable for a longer period, giving you more time to use the product. The DD putty does give off a lot of residue when in the water relative to TLF however
