      Just about to turn up my lights ;) With my new RSR250 thinking about lighting before I decided on the tank I wanted really good coverage and I was thinking 500PAR... especially after seeing what Abe does. I have LPS put I'm putting them in the shade.
      Also hearing yellow is rare makes sense - I am always after yellow. I wonder if it does better under 200PAR - like they always say Bird of Paradise Seriatopora is yellow in lower light.
      My issue is I don't have a PAR meter but I guess based on my light and what others have run that I will hit 500 if I run it at 50%... I'm at 15% now so a long way to go ;)

    Well done sir. More shared research furthers the hobby and this was a great share! My tank really took off after I rented a par meter and dialed in the intensity and spectrum. Acros get 650-300 par depending on location & type. Have to dose Red Sea colors to keep up the ICP results at sea water numbers. At that point aminos are crucial. Thanks for the video. I listened to it twice.

    My scientific approach is to purchase known colorful specimens and keep the parameters stable. Red Sea AB+ had a positive effect on restoring color to new acropora frags. Nice lights help a lot.

    REALLY appreciate this video...who would have thought an actual educated response to the age old question of coloration. Also interested to hear which amino acid product you choose and why you chose that specific product. Thanks :)

    Working in Aquaculture with daily ICP testing you saying that Traceelements haven't had a effect on color is just mindbending to me. Light and nutriants are only a part of the equation.
    At high PAR levels Iodine/Zinc are extremely important to prevent corals from bleaching.
    Running Manganese a bit higher and suddenly red colors overlay other colors, same happens with Iron and the color Green.
    Another observation we made is that our LPS dominanted Systems update Vanadium in a much higher rate then our SPS systems.
    There is a lot more but don't want make a wall of text. 🤣

      If you have all this information and observation, why aren't you analyzing it and making some conclusions and recommendations off those conclusion. If you are just keeping it to yourself as a "trade secret", then that does no one who is just a hobbyist any good.

      @@garrycole9187 hey we'll be doing exactly that soon with our updated ICP homepage.
      We noticed that the higher the stress caused by extreme Blue/UV lighting schedules the more coral consume certain trace elements.
      I'm no marine marine biologist who tested coral tissue for months to see what exactly they stored in it but a aquarist working in a huge Aquaculture facility/ Aquarium supplement producer with daily ICP testing.
      If you want to know something ask away :)

    Thank you for reviewing this paper for us. One thing that I’m missing in the original study is the analysis of par between 100 and 400. In some cases, The graphs show that the amount of proteins saturates at the 400 par and there’s a significant difference between 100 and 400. However, this saturation might as well occur at the 150 par. Unfortunately, the low resolution of the samples wouldn’t show that.

      Yeah it certainly a limitation. Although the study is still valuable in my opinion. It’s not always tractable to add extra conditions because it adds to extra efforts and expenses and I am guessing marine biology is not funded at the same rate as medicine.

      your tanks look great Roberto. i also had some really nice colors in the redsea reefer 250 over the past several years; i know that you don't need to much to get decent color. But what i am trying to do with my rebuild is to really push the envelop in terms of how the corals look. I am trying to get them to make more intense pigments, and i think that it may be helpful to supply them with nutrients... kinda of like body building ;)

    High par needs high nutrients. However you want to do it. High export high feed or keeping a balance with them there.

    Great informative video, are there any of these type of papers, that you are aware of for euphillias at all. I'm assuming that colour spectrum can shift colours slightly. I have had the same hammer coral under the same viparspectra led for 3 years, I recently changed 20 of the leds out adding more royal blues and violets and removing the yellower leds. This has resulted In the stems of the hammer that were the browny in colour to have a green hue to it now.

      bearded-flipflop I haven’t seen papers on euphillias per say / most of the research is focused on ‘reef building’ corals, aka the Stoney corals. I think there may be some things that may translate over but not entirely sure

    A shallow water Acro likes high light. Revolutionary! lol. Good information though...just playing. It sounds like PAR around 400 is a good starting point for SPS... and interesting theory that higher light may spur uptake of trace elements. Please do a video on Amino's. I love your scientific angle on the hobby.

    Great indepth study of coral requirement and light. Prior to my tank crash (due to something else), I didn't know much about par requirement and use my ATI 8x80w light barely 2 inches away from water surface. SPS were growing like crazy with crazy fluorescent. Later I borrowed a par meter and realized that my sps were receiving between 600 to 800 par. So when I hear studies that says about 300 par is sufficient I was quite sceptical.
    In any case, great video. Any particular brand of amino acid are you thinking of dosing? I would like to give it a try too.

    I have trouble keeping Pinks and Reds, I end up turning them Green. I wonder if it's because, i'm increasing the GFP in them. As I'm smashing them with Radion 4's and 5's at 100% intensity..

    I have found the exact same summary through the years. May try to make my own amino acids after I finish my last gallon of acropower. I am finding having a higher fish load and nutrient level is better. I am letting my NO3 reach 10ppm and PO4 level =0.12ppm

      @@TheBioReef I saw one thing on R2R but not really a recipe per se. It's a pretty expensive experiment but the person had been using it since last Nov with no ill effects and looked as good poly extension as the Brightwell stuff he used to use.

    Thank you so much for sharing this information. Your sps look stunning. I am currently loosing my sps (non acro) as I tried to raise nitrates by spectracide (tree stump remover diluted according to Holmes Farley's direction). I guess what I am trying to understand to get those stunning Sps what is: 1. PAR 2. Nitrates and phosphates 3. Alkalinity
    And how much stable do you keep those parameters? That is what I am trying to find out.
    I tried very low nutrients(with all like 7.7 to 8) for long with high light (like 300_350 par) but growth was not good. So I started playing with nutrients and then it nuked everything.

      sorry to hear that... i dose KNO3 (although pharmaceutical grade stuff, not stump remover) and i find that it typically helps - gives the corals a bit of a pop!

      @@TheBioReef Cool thanks. I should not have done that and followed what the forums say. Feel so stupid now. I tried adding some carbon in a bad to try and extract whatever toxins were introduced by the stump remover. So what are your parameters like?

      @@theguitarist1977 about 8.5 dkh, 450 ppm Ca and 1300 ppm Mg. I like to keep nitrates between 5 and 10 and i dose KNo3 whenever it drops. Phostphates are currently 0.16 ppm; i dose postasium phosphates whenver they drop below 0.05

      @@TheBioReef I see thanks for the Stats. My nitrates were zero, phosphate was 0.04 (using Hanna) and alk like 7.9-8dkh. I tried to raise nitrates to like 3ppm then hell broke loose. I have a very strong ats algae scrubber as well as biomarine block and spheres in the sump. So it seems i am doing it by the book much more than i should. One way i am thinking to raise nitrates is to try and turn of the skimmer. But after i get out of this bad shock i have in the system, will start playing with that. Thanks again

      Rafik Kamel you can also cut down the time your algae scrubber is on and reduce amount of marine blocks... I like the skimmer because of the extra aeration. I had a very similar experience when I started... was stripping the water of nutrients and sps were very pale.

    Sadly that Light test was done under T5s which is different from LEDs. Corals do fine under 900 par from t5s, 900 par from LEDs on the other hand is almost certain death.

    You have a huge colony of acropora carduu, mine when it grows a lot begins to fight for the center, I have cut it twice and except for the cuttings and it continues to grow but I can't have it like that, my light and current parameters are correct and not I feed the corals, I don't know if you have any idea what might happen. With other colonies of acropora this problem does not happen to me

      AmroAzul TV very nice. I have a gen 4 XR30 Pro over my reefer 170 running ab+ schedule. I’m around 70% peak but would love to ram up to around 80% as well to be closer to 400 PAR. I’ve been making weekly changes coming up from 50% a few months back.

      Ok, blue light = ~450 nm; this i think corresponds to royal blue

      AmroAzul TV see the reason i asked it... there have been a few expert reefers.. wont mention any names but they ALL recommend that you run the uv and voilets lowww like half the percentage you run the royal blue at.. they say uv turns the corals green.. i did this test high uv and some of my acros turned green.. when i lowedred the voilet and uv the corals started to change colour to what i would call natural colours

      MereReef interesting. Is it the UV the turns the corals green or is it that the UV excites green fluorescent protein making the corals shine green... not sure...

    Pretty interesting studies. I guess the only issue I have is your conclusions are nearly identical to almost every other major source of information in the reefing community. Increase par, feed heavily and check your dosing levels...that’s what everyone says to do. But I suppose it’s nice that all the scientific papers you found just left us with the same conclusions we’ve all found anecdotally.

      There are some finer points... some pigments increase proportionally with PAR, while others plateaux and then decline...

    I’ve always thought those “rainbow” acro photos were photoshopped. It turned out they actually look that colorful in person.

      i have yet to see a homewrecker or a walt disney that looks as good as the pictures... :)

      Most them are “enhanced” photos with reds and oranges bumped up

      Some of the most colourful ones are under actinic blue lighting as well. The real test for colours are those under a 14k MH light or full spectrum light.

      Depends on the owner. I’ve seen some just as nice as the photos but definitely some vendors photo enhance.

      Maybe it's just my LFS or my limited exposure to awesome display tanks but I haven't seen a truly stunning ACRO display in person. Even when I went to WWC in Orlando nothing really wowed me in terms of ACRO. The Lagoon tank blew my mind though. Getting discouraged over here.

    Get yourself some t5 or even better metal halide, the corals will look better. If not turn up your whites on the led. Corals need full spectrum (leds dont have that) especially at higher par. People have known this for decades with far better tanks then the great led tanks now. IMO there is some loss of knowledge on lighting in the hobby/on the forums. par is not everything as it only reads certain spectrum, leds only produce this spectrum. Stop dosing no3 and start feeding more. Corals like taking ammonium not nitrate. Keep your n and p low with export (chaeto) if you want great colors.

      i think i will probably need to add more white on the LEDs to increase PAR to the levels i want... Alas, while i think T5s are great, i really love how sleek the Radions look over my tank... and i don't get a lot of light spillover. my tank is in the living room so it has to look sleek as well

      ​@@TheBioReef It is possible to have good results with those lights as well, but you cant compair 500 +par ab+(radion) with 500+ par mh or t5. The t5 will have a much wider range of spectrum with IR (750+ nm) and UV (around 350 nm). Corals will tollerate much higher par with t5 and mh because of that spectrum. The leds certainly look great, and wont cause much heat! I have a ATI sunpower on my current build and it has no spill and looks great IMO.

      The problel if you feed a lot the phosphate go higher quicker than the nitrate

      Hahaha :) science is my jam. Also, seeing is believing. YT is full of channels of folks passing opinions as facts. I like to show the science and then discuss it.
