  • Took a day hike up Elephants Back from Carson pass on July 5th. This is a pretty basic 5 mile round trip hike from the trailhead with a small amount of off trail travel and a 500 foot climb up a scree field to the summit for some nice views. Not a good place to be in a thunderstorm so try to do it early if they are in the forecast. Still lots of snow over 10,000 feet. I got a go pro for my birthday so excuse the poor camera work as I figure out how to use it.

So pleased you are able to get out and climb so well! Praying for continued healing knees!

My new knee is flawless but my other one is failing and will need a replacement soon. The call of the trail is still stronger than the pain so out I go. I appreciate the prayers!

Hope Valley . . . come mid-Autumn, all of its prodidgious Aspens sure do know how to throw a WILD party; some of 'em actually verge upon a bloody red. Then there's Kirkwood for Alpine Skiing. Seems Kirkwood gets a bit more continental influence to its storms, so you get a finer glide down the mountains than you would, from most other Sierran Ski Parks.

“LONE PINE-Dr. Daniel I. Axelrod, UCLA professor of geology, has completed an extensive study of the fossil plants on the Sierra Nevadas. His research has helped establish approximately when the life zones on the mountains were established; Dr. Axelrod's fossil studies indicate that 15,000,000 years ago the range was a gentle slope that reached a height of probably no more than 3000 feet.-Inyo Independent” Cremated. Thanks Ape Man, I live in the Sacramento area and go hiking in the Carson Pass area sometimes. Unfortunately my doctor says I have COPD now, so I'm not as fast as I used to be, but the call of the mountains is still stronger than my lack of breath. Hang in there bro.

I went to the doctor today hoping to get some cortisone injections which I have done in the past before backpacking trips. I know it's bad for you but in failing joints it can't make it any worse. I go back in a week after they check my X-rays. You gotta to what you gotta do to get outside. Be safe but do what you can.

I spent the weekend up at Showers Lake and admired Round Top and Elephant's Back on the way home today (7/7). I'm really looking forward to the wildflower bloom up there, but based on what I saw on the way up to Showers Lake, it is going to be a few weeks out. It is amazing how much snow is still up there, and it really sucks hiking over it, especially with a fully loaded backpack. Maybe I will finally make a trek up to Elephant's Back. The views look amazing! Thanks for sharing!

If you ever get the urge to climb Round Top, which I recommend, avoid the temptation to go up the backside after reaching the saddle. It gets really steep back there and it’s easier to go up the north side. I was bummed the flowers weren’t out but it gives us an excuse to go back!

@@ApeMan Thanks! I've done Round Top, but haven't been up Elephant's Back. Maybe I'll bump into you on the trail! Love your thru-hiker interviews BTW. I met a couple of them when I was at Showers Lake. They are amazing!

Yes they are amazing. I watched your intro video and subscribed. You have some really good footage. I just got my hero7 a month ago so am learning. You've already taught me less face time and more trail footage. Do you use a chest or head attachment? Its really good. I despise drones but my God that footage is gorgeous! We frequent the same trails so maybe our paths will cross.

@@ApeMan Thanks! I actually hold it with a grip. The stabilization on the 7 is amazing! I was using the Hero 5/6 with the Karma Grip before the 7 came out. I took the drone up to Showers Lake and flew it last night. Not sure how the footage is going to look. There is something up with the compass/calibration. I need to fiddle with it before I take it out again. I just about lost it. As it was, I had to hike down into the canyon to retrieve it. Grrr.. I hate the sound of them as well (too much like a herd of mosquitos!), and I try to be really respectful of others and not fly it if other people are around (which means I don't fly it much). Plus, it adds way too much weight to much weight to my pack. The sacrifices we make, ehh? I'm looking forward to digging into your channel more - you have some really good content, and I love those interviews. I'm too chicken to ask them questions unless they strike up a convo.

The thru hikers always want to be moving but if you catch them on a break they are full of great stories. Yes I am very impressed with the stabilization on the 7 and of course love the weight. I didn't even know I wanted one - I got it as a gift from my wife.

A lovely day hike for sure. Enjoy the season then do that other knee and there will be no stopping you. Prayers. Encourages me for my plan C. Plan A is still JMT NOBO from Horse shoe Meadows, plan b is enter from Kearsage Pass, Plan C is a loop into ansell Adams Wilderness from Agnew Meadow and several more loops, the lakes above Sabrina Lake. foregoing the JMT but getting into the beautiful high country. My next phase of training will let me know which plan. My year gain in age is telling a bit, at least in the summer heat.

A really good hike is Agnew to Tuolumne Meadows. Yarts and the Devil's post pile busses make it convenient after leaving your car in Mammoth. Hit me up with any questions.

Been in Folsom area for 30 years and haven’t felt an earthquake here. Felt 100s when I lived in the Bay Area including the World Series earthquake in 1989 where I was sitting 4 rows from the top.

I didn't see any and the PCTers said they've only seen a few. They are coming and they will be fierce this year no doubt. Probably be around until September this year. Remember to pack your headnet!
