  • Safety should be everyones TOP priority... BUT it seems like people out there are throwing caution to the wind... As a result we are seeing so many ebike fires... So my suggestion is to BUY reputable... Buy from a company that builds from integrity a company that builds here in the USA and has safety as its number one priority... That company is Powerful Lithium...
    If you don't know them get to know them and quickly you will see that they are the No. 1 Lithium Battery Manufacturer in the USA...
    🚨 USE CODE MRENYC 🚨 and you can save $100 0ff your Powerful Lithium battery
    🚨 USE CODE MRENYC 🚨 and save $100 OFF When you purchase a BANDIT at www.sparkcycleworks.com

    I gasped when I saw the soldered connections on that deathtrap pack. The entire point of spot welding the terminals is avoid the heat load from soldering that could otherwise damage the inside of the battery. The terminals can also heat up during high amp draws, so making sure there's enough spot welds and thick enough bus bars is also a factor. I've also seen now that there are heatsinking compounds that the ends of the batteries can be potted into, to draw out discharge heat. There should always be a liberal application of kaptom tape wrapped around the cells after they're assembled into groups.
    I have a stock ebike with a basic battery, and I still put the battery inside the oven when I'm charging it. I don't take any chances when it comes to ebike batteries!

    I had a battery fire 2 weeks ago. I have an XP 2.0 and I've made some modifications to it. I made it dual hub motor and had 5 battery packs on it. I had 3 in parallel for the rear and two for the front. All packs were individually charged with their own chargers. What I thought caused the fire was one of the heads of the allen bolts on the rear rack rubbed away at the bag 2 of my shrink wrapped packs were in, worked it's way into one of the packs and must have shorted out a cell. After watching this video, I think it was from road vibration and that the batteries weren't in a case just the blue shrink wrap it came in. I had just returned home from a ride and was in the process of plugging my batteries back into their chargers when I heard a pop followed by a whoosh. I looked down and saw smoke coming out of the bag and started freaking out. I managed to get the bike back into my driveway and started unwrapping the bungees holding the bag on the bike. My roommate happened to be heading to work so he helped me get the bag off of my bike. I managed to carry the bag to the end of the driveway. I had just set it down when flames started shooting out of the bag. Unfortunately I was not able to save the other pack in the bag so I lost both packs but the bike and the other 3 batteries were saved. The fire department came and put out the fire. I'm just glad that I set the bag down upright or it would have been mortaring off little fireballs at my yard. 14 years of e-bike experience and this was the only time that has happened and I'm extra careful with stuff.

      Man to be honest that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Do not put battery packs in parallel if you dont know what you are doing. Individual BMS's on packs that you put parallel will not function correctly as you are increasing the stress beyond what the batteries are initially rated for. Thus discharging them further than they should. Lipo's for example will do this more, but you will also be able to monitor them correctly AND they are rated for pulling alot more amps out of them.

    I learned this before I even got into ebikes, thanks vaping! Unregulated mods loved blowing up in people's faces when they'd done stupid things (not calculating draw from coils, vaping while charging etc.). Education is always going to be the best way of waking people up.
    The soldered points were more than a bit shocking. Would loved to have seen the customers face when it was explained they'd been riding around on a bomb. 😮
    The shop I take my bike into has pointed out how the new generation of cyclist seem to take the cheap route on everything but the bike. We're both of the mindset that you buy the best you can afford for everything but the battery pack. It's just something you don't cheap out on (very similar to buying a quality power supply for a computer, compared to a bargain basement brand that's built like garbage and ends up having no failsafes to protect other components). He's had clients with 6k+ bikes comes in for replacement because they locked it up with a coated wire lock, and unfortunately it's those folks who tend to cheap out on everything (especially someone who didn't realise how much replacement packs cost until they need to replace them).

    I personally have been doing Ebikes for some 5 years I have a shop full of them but have never, never ever had a battery smoke or catch fire. I even keep spares on the shelves charged. I only buy from companies that specializes in making batteries. Have never tried to make my own and would never buy something like he has on his work bench. Just like a car full of gas if the right conditions exist then yes there is a chance for fire. But Lithium ion batteries have been in use for 45 plus years you would think if there were truly an inherent danger to using them it would had been banned years ago. Cell phone, power tools, lap tops, security lighting... the list goes on of things that are not bursting into flames on a daily bases, that All use lithium ion batteries. If this sounds like a rant well it kind of is. I personally get tired of folks asking about the bikes just to say Oh don't those explode into fire!!? I tell them yes that is why I like
    em'!

  • @lostthebox4403
    @lostthebox4403 Год назад +2

    Thanx for showing what the problem is. I had a feeling the fire incidents were due to lack of BMS, did not realize they would dare to solder Li-ion batteries.
    I have ordered 2 batteries ordered from China, saved money and been very happy with them. Both have been properly built with spot welds, balancing BMS, and very well insulated and covered with insulator board on all sides;, plus double shrink wrapped in opposing directions . This is the only way I'd try to save money on a battery, but you do have to be careful of what you are ordering. Typically BMS specs are in the description on packs that include them, I avoided any that did not list that information, or the cells contained.

    • @helenHTID
      @helenHTID Год назад +2

      You should NEVER run an ebike battery pack without a BMS! And make sure it's a competent one too. It's totally unsafe and inefficient for the batteries, But people really do do it.. It's not actually uncommon, and I'd bet a good wage that a majority of fires are caused because of this or a shit BMS that failed it's job.

    • @lostthebox4403
      @lostthebox4403 Год назад +1

      @@helenHTID battery balancing is a costly feature, but i would not order a battery without it. With it, the bms can monitor each cell bank and try to balance out the voltages. I have had one cell bank fail and the BMS cut the battery off completely. Thermal cutoffs are another mandatory feature for me. You can't put a price on etra safety features whemnyou're talking about using a bomb for a power source. LFP/LiFePO4 is a better chemistry, but notbalways easy or cheap to find.

    • @helenHTID
      @helenHTID Год назад

      @@lostthebox4403 You're talking 40 - 60 bux depending on pack specs, Not a cost worth skimping out in any circumstance imo. (I'm talking building yourself, Bulk build factories probably get discounted, And repair services will charge more)

    • @lostthebox4403
      @lostthebox4403 Год назад

      @@helenHTID I agree, I ordered a spot welder to start building my own packs and repair the one I have that is down(after I check all 130 cells and balance the good ones).
      Especially after seeing this video, I am not sure about buying packs. I check them when they come in, but I would feel much more comfortable with knowing I built it properly. I am just using block style batteries, so that makes things much simpler. I have been lucky with China so far, they have even done the 30a - 50a bms upgrade for free once. I've seen up to $100 difference in packs, but I won't go cheap as this is my main transportation and I don't like the idea of a flame out between my legs, let alone a house fire. Chargers are another item that matters, must be smart enough to cut power when the pack is up to voltage.

  • @tcm2kd5000
    @tcm2kd5000 Год назад +1

    As with 99% of everything else, if it cost way less than what it should cost it is likely junk. I always fuse my controller before the battery for extra protection that way you have more than just the BMS to stop a shorted controller from taking your battery out. Also, you should put an Amp Clamp on your controller to see what you are really pulling for amps from your battery. Don't just trust what you think the manufacturer said it will pull.

    Temp and current. Thats about it.
    Decent battery pack will have fuses between each group. This helps with a short, between groups ,but not an internal short within the group.
    Pays to go have a proper battery with safety kept in mind.

    Like the phrase goes “you get what you paid for” and look at those bad build battery packs. Ruining good battery cells like Samsung too smh. It’s always nice to save a buck or two but when it comes to safety, nobody should be cheap. I seen people spend thousands on suspension and brakes but not wearing a helmet. Sure motorcycle jackets aren’t cheap but they can save you from a hospital bill. To put in perspective a young girl fell on her rollerblades and landing on her head: we talking 1-2 mph and because no helmet… you know the rest.

    To many batteries 🔋 in a pack increase the heat while riding creating a thermal overload. Their is nothing to cool them off and a fan is not enough.
    Tesla has a cooling coil snaking 🐍 through the pack constantly cooling the pack that is why you only see 40+ volt battery packs.
    Never recharge a battery pack after riding, the battery pack is hot 🥵 and when you charge a hot battery it only gets hotter. Let your batteries cool down minimum two to three hours seriously 😳 no matter what you have.

    Mr. E, with respect, the interviewee said people bypass their BMS to save money; everyone I know that bypasses their BMS--redirects and enables the flow of electrical current--FOR MORE POWER (more amps from your battery pack). When bypassing the BMS, increasing the power draw is the goal but it must be limited to a particular amperage. All batteries are rated to a certain continuous discharge. Lithium ion batteries are dangerous in the wrong hands; a little [not enough] battery pack making knowledge is dangerous. In lieu of bypassing anything, upgrade the battery pack (higher voltage) and always fully protect it with a BMS.

    Battery fires are one of the reasons why I ride gas bikes. You might think gas is more volatile - I think technically it is - but if you’ve ever been worn out from trying to start an engine that needs more than just a hard crank to start, then you’ll agree with me that gas is, in practice, harder to ignite than a lithium battery pack. Even if they’re assembled properly, Joe E-bike can always find a way to mess around with something he shouldn’t have and burn his apartment complex to the ground. Maybe someday battery technology will be there, but IMHO the lithium battery should have never been mass produced and put in the hands of regular people. It’s just too dangerous and you aren’t responsible enough to handle them. Sorry but not sorry.

    Well, ebike fires are real an extremely dangerous and the news media has finally caught on. the news media is broadcasting e-bike fires on their news channels more and more. so you really do need to watch how you treat your batteries and always look for damage to the battery. I don't know where these batteries came from, but there is nobody I know or could think of, that would put this battery or anything that looks like this on their ebike. let alone buy something that looks like this. for this video they should have short-circuited one of those wires just to show you what could really happen. Nice try but this video is a failure in alot of ways. Just alot of talk with nothing to back up your point.

      You are suggesting V put his life in danger just for your benefit… you need someone that been certified and taken many courses and been doing fire prevention videos for years to create a controlled environment so they can demonstrate how deadly a poor build battery pack is.

      No examples or video of real ebike fires. You tube has alot of posted ebike fires. Alot of folks have never seen just how violent a battery fire really is. Plus they never showed what a properly built battery looks like. The owner of this shop totally missed the opportunity to show how well his batteries are made. The thought behind the making of the video is commendable but the video was poorly made with nothing more than a bunch talk

      @@jimmyelliott7473 you just said RUclips has a lot of them so why should powerful lithium risk their lives for a video to make a fire? Which again needs to be in a controlled environment.
      2. You ever watched the documentary of McDonald’s and how they had the best assembly line but let their competitors come in and watch them how they do it so that’s why bk and Taco Bell copy them. My point is why is V and powerful lithium gonna show how their battery are build on camera so their competitors can see it and copy it?

      @@jimmyelliott7473 To be fair, and no offense to Mr. E, this video was shot and produced by Mr. E, not by Powerful Lithium or their owner, V. Saying V did a poor job show casing his work in this video is not his fault.

    I really hope the person who made that terrible battery stops making batteries but we know they won't. Perhaps exposing them and their malpractice will do something. Who knows where they are but V did say anything can happen at anytime even with one of powerful lithium's batteries. I bought my custom 72v battery from a company in China that's been in the business for 10 years. I believe consumers are quick to blame chinese made batteries without knowing all the details. Proper packaging and mounting can be the life saver or ender of your battery. Best of luck to all the e-riders out there 🤙🛴🚲

      It’s crucial to take care of your battery and familiarize yourself with the BMS app… monitor your cells and look for abnormal readings… this could be a great topic for a future video…
      Key note here is know you battery specs and life cycles… look for abnormalities especially when you completed your life cycles…
      Also overcharging is a big concern…
      Me I experienced an overcharge where my BMS did it’s job and successfully turned itself off to prevent overcharging
      So please don’t leave you battery ever charging unattended…
