- Police are warning about a social media trend that shows how criminals can use a USB cable - instead of a key - to start Kias and Hyundais.
"Kia and Hyundai say anyone who has questions about their car's safety can call customer support". Customer support: "Oh yeah, your car's safety sucks".
Those auto manufacturers should be forced to recall their cars and fix the issue at no cost to the consumer. I wouldn't be surprised if Kia and Hyundai owners see their insurance rates go up. ☹️
To date my Sonata insurance increases every renewal due to this issue
Mine skyrocketed because of this. I will never be purchasing another Kia/hyundai as long as I live
It really sucks that those car manufacturers are not going to fix the issue by recalling it and fixing it. They are going to lose customers.
They have done a recall.
They won’t loose customers people are idiots and will buy them again.
@@Knovie14 A recall for a steering wheel lock. You have to lock the steering wheel every time you get out of your car.
well install a kill switch and done you fixed it
"Aftermarket parts"
social media will be our downfall.
Will be? Already is.
@@berniesoprano6980 the
Bro it already is
Already got 4 dumb kids killed smh
Well, you're on it right now
If you live in an area of high crime and you're worried about this and you can't get your car fixed in time all you have to do is pull your fuel pump relay under the hood of your vehicle and it won't go anywhere
Or just unplug the battery lol
that would be too obvious, they can easily see the car has no power and pop the hood and reconnect the battery if they see it unplugged.
@@eggless3547 I just installed a kill switch on my ECM . My switch is hidden they would have to spend way too much time trying to figure it out and it wouldn't be worth it they'll just move on to the next thing. Everybody tries all these fancy techniques and ways to not get your car stolen when it could be a $5 switch that just bypasses a critical component of your vehicle that will not allow it to start.
@@ericerto8250 The average driver like the couple they interviewed in this video would have no idea how to do that.
These folks just need to take it to their Kia/Hyundai dealer and get it fixed NOW.
@@ericerto8250 Indeed. I won't speak of my situation haha! some years back, but I simply installed a SPDT switch and *BOOM* "problem fixed." Criminals. Rookies! *lol*
This is why flamethrower theft deterrents should be legal like in robocop
Magna-volt
I'd have something where they could be shocked if they touch the car.
I think they actually tried that in Africa. Nobody ended up buying it so it went away.
No it’s not the push button start models it’s the ones with regular turn to start keys
*a PEDAL LOCK is way better than a steering wheel lock.*
They'll still smash the window because they won't see the pedal lock outside the car.
The best anti theft device is a kill switch to a spark plug that is fitted to the gas tank! 💥🔥🤣🤣🤣🤣
Obviously you watch too many fake movies.
You can actually do THAT and NOTHING would happen as you need the RIGHT amount of gas vapors AND oxygen!!
clutch pedal and aftermarket shift knob takes care of it.
WTF. Police are WELL aware of this trend and have arrested at least TWO people. ONLY TWO?!! 🤨
Lol, I’m not sure if the incorrect reporting is intentional or not. There is no “usb port” behind the start/stop button. They are ripping off the cover of the cylinder key lock and sticking a usb cable in to it to turn the ignition. No actual electronics involved at all. They are not ripping out the button because the ones with the button can’t be stolen. SMH 🤦♂️
This is why I hate Tiktok
Same here man same here
Tiktok is societal cancer
Tiktok is literally the bottom of the barrel of social media it’s stupid how much kids live their lives by it now
not the only reason why i hate tiktok
That's why I buy Nissan
Thank you for telling us news reporter how to break into a car that was a good idea
Its like school shooters and the like. They report it with fake sympathy and then make money on clicks everytime it happens. They create copycats.
It’s good to show….so people won’t buy the cheap car
The standard key models have a design flaw. The push button start are not affected.
It’s so easy you don’t NEED instructions from this guy
@@esils exactly, don't be cheap, buy the push start model
I am very confident that this is incorrect reporting, typical of news media.
The vehicles affected are the ones that use a blade type ignition key, not the push button start ones. The reason for it is that the keyless ignition needs to have a transponder provide an "okay to start" signal whereas the blade types do not.
How do you know plugging the usb doesn't override the signal requirements?
@@d_all_in not true. I have a transponder blade key lol. Tho it’s a Honda so I’m not half as worried
@@d_all_in Ummm.... because it doesn't?
The USB A connector they use just happens to fit into a busted up lock cylinder... just like how that old junker car from back in the day could be started with using a flat blade screw driver.
It is very common on vehicles with no immobilizer system to be able to unplug wires from the ignition switch (not lock cylinder) and "hotwire" it with paperclips to get it started. That's the easy part. The other problem is unlocking the steering column. This is where brute force comes in.
With the push button start, you literally need to create a digital signal to input into a module to tell it, "Hey, I have a valid key here." A USB A connector isn't going to do that.
True!
This is false. Hyundai and Kia have used transponder signals in their blade keys since 2006.
Leave a fake bar of gold inside your car, thieves will think its a bait car
My LOCAL RADIO STATION IS RUNNING THIS STORY EVERY 20 Min They want you to steal
Never thought I 'd hear the words "Stolen and "Kia" in one sentence.
So glad to be living in Canada, where immobilizers are mandatory
This video is incorrect. It's ONLY cars with mechanical key ignition and ALL Kia and Hyundai 2010-2021. Vehicles during that period lacked standard engine immobilisers, the electronic security systems that prevent ignition until they have detected a transponder from the key fob carried by the owner.
What about 2023 model of the Hyundai?
Right cuz mine was just stolen yesterday and I had the key. 2015 sonata
Time to go back to the ol steering wheel lock I used 15 years ago lol at least they couldn't drive it away.
But they can still crash the car without problem.
These flimsy steering wheels cut easily
Takes about 5 seconds to defeat the steering wheel lock.
Boot your own car lmao
Easy to take off
Charge the minors as adults, it'll stop
If you're this smart to figure this out...how about using your smarts to find a job somewhere using that information
The USB cable is used because usb plug fits on the shaft of the ignition switch that's under the button. Same as a car with a key . Your using the lock cylinder to turn the switch
You dont see any of the push button start ones hit. Only the key ones (at least that ive seen). I always see it on the key operated on the column. Never on the dash. Unless its the same like you described
So basically a usb will work on most any car if u can rip out the key cylinder. I have started my truck with pliers after my keys sunk to the botto
Of the lake. Along with my phone, canoe, other valuables.
Thanks for clarifying
It’s not the push start cars. The news is confused. It’s the key start cars. The Ian does match the cylinder under the key. There’s nothing to turn in a push start car
Kia dealer tech here. The push to start ones have immobilizers while the key ones do not
At least I have a 6-speed... most teens won't know what to do with that extra pedal 😂 But an easier way to guarantee it can't be stolen is to simply pull a wire or a fuse that only you know where it goes, like a fuel pump fuse or some other essential fuse and it would take a thief hours to figure it out, the car won't start and they will move on.
Good point on preventing the Kia/Hyundai thefts ..unfortunately, they'll have already smashed the window to get into the vehicle before they figure out they can't steal it.
EU have required electronic immobilizers on all new cars since 1998.
They blame social media but what about your media? Lmaoo .. this video didn’t just show mfs how to steal cars as well ? Lol 😂 thanks for info.. you said 2011-2021 right? Preeeshhh!
give them the years of cars they can do it on
Why are these companies allowed to continue to publish this kind of information? Where is their responsibility?
It's just that they don't care.
I feel sure that the company didn't authorize the release of the information. There is a class action lawsuit regarding it.
It's public social media platforms where anybody can post anything, theses pages have to be reported in order for the company to take them down but by then ppl have shared and downloaded the videos so it's too late by then
Things spread like wild fire on the internet
@@MeltingOnYourMind so true. For all the good that the internet provides... it provides bad content equally as well.

Local News idiots keeps showing how this is done in detail and show the tiktok link. Now that you have shown more people how to steal the cars show the car owner how to stop them.
Straight up went and explained how to do it in the news
Now sue them
Price for those car just went down
I gaurentee those kids can't steal an unlocked stick shift.
News people: People are stealing kias and Hyundais . Let's make a report where we show people how to steal kias and Hyundais. Multiple times in a row to stop the dirty thieves. of course the cops know about how they steal the cars. They just didn't want everyone to know.
I hope they sock it to these kids that are stealing cars .. they should even charge the parents if they are under age.. this has been an ongoing issue...
Lock doors, park in well lit areas, keep valuables out of car, consider steering wheel lock. Most people have at least 90% on this list done. If they’re going to steal your car they’re going to steal it. None of what that dipstick sheriff said is going to prevent an idiot from stealing your car. This kids are doing it for credit, kicks and grins. They don’t care if you have anything valuable in your car.
Steering wheel lock is helpful though.
That
You can take a hacksaw to the steering wheel and remove the wheel lock
@@ChrisWood777 Of course you can. But that adds more time to equation. They stealing hyundais and kias cause its easy.
@@ChrisWood777 these kids aren't carrying around a hacksaw.
Yeah I don’t believe this for a second. 😂
Remember when Hondas were the main brand to get stolen. Now you have thousands of kia and hyundai customers on alert and stressed out. Kia and hyundai need to get sued. Class action law suit.
There is other ways of stealing push button start vehicles without tearing anything up...even assign new FOBs for them.
Just rig a couple bait kias with a remote activated explosive. Its 2022. Needa stop playing softball with human garbage.
Yeah youre right we should just kill children, thatll sure show them. Deterrance doesnt work. There is barely any cases of someone committing a crime where they say "i thought through this entire thing and considered the consequences of my actions." Nevertheless you advocating the murder of 14 year olds.
Also windshield covers (idk the name but the kind you put up to prevent heat) will make it impossible for thieves to look inside your car from the front after that take all valuables with you and lock the doors ☺️
The side windows 👀 they broke into my side window I had a shield up and nothing in my car they just did it to do it bc it’s a trend
They not gon look in for stuff they just gon look at what typa car it is and go off that. It’s the houses in the burbs that get broken into and robbed not the houses in the hood.
What are these car companies doing about this?
where is the recall
Happened to me last week. They also stole one a foot away from mine after and before trashing mine
Do you have a key or is your push to start. Because I have a 2019 Hyundai. But I’ve heard that it’s the ones with key start that are getting jscked

Stop telling more people. Geez. So stupid. Ours is in the shop now. Same bs
Just look up Missouri class action suit against Kia
Correction, their showing teens how to earn an early death
I think people should interpret this more as a reaction to the way the world is than a symptom of it
Does this only work in the US or all cars?
I just become one of the victims this morning 😢 3 teens trying to thieve my KIA SOUL but luckily my neighbor called the police and they caught all of them. But my car is damaged can’t drive.
Can they get the cars that are not push to start?
Yet KIA didnt notify us here in NZ of this vulnerability lol the fact companies like this then go on to essentially excuse and refuse to fix it is the problem... We have worked hard to secure vehicles over the last 20-30 years and this is basically laughing in the faces of consumers. Do better.
The only innocent carmaker on earth is Mazda. They've never done anything wrong.
The immobilizer system has been optional equipment for a really long time now. I prefer to not have it because the cost to fix when a key is lost or simply fails sucks. I would rather wire up a fuel pump circuit interrupt switch under the dash for about $10.
@@africa_explained_tv besides make an rx-8

KIA and HYUNDAI are friendly to anyone in Zombie apocalypse like in The Walking Dead.
I'm pretty sure you'll find a left car key in that situation. Your car getting stolen for the sake of people surviving in apocalypse that could happen in 1/1,000,000,000,000 chance is not worth it.
There is no way, no how you will ever find a way around a hackers ingenuity. To do so would mean to forfeit the use of the internet all together! Enjoy the party while it lasts! ✌😀
Yall just need a manual transmission and these kids won't know how yo actually drive away lol
Saying 123 is probably very difficult for people that can’t speak
That's what you get for driving a KIA.
Just like Vauxhall Nova... Yank the hazard switch, flip it, and starts
Chynna was very helpful to this story.
I don't have to worry about it. I'm driving a 96 yeah modern cars has nothing on my Ford Explorer. You should see all the nice modern vehicles broke down on the highway.
Use a steering lock and they will instantly move on to the next kia.
Just go back to physical keys instead of push start.
Who was the first to find this out? Wildddd
Man what the pluck is really happening? Why are these entities able to to post a way of doing wrong
Wheel lock........they carry diamond blade battery angle grinders. 20 seconds and the wheel lock is off.
Got a better idea?
Wait till they find out about the Vauxhall Nova and it’s hazard light switch
My friend’s 2011 Hyundai was stolen just yesterday with the USB method and it’s not even a 2015 or higher
1:16 to 1:30 and 1:56 to 2:08 is absolutely, positively incorrect information.
I like how you talk to them as a kid they sure are acting grown I’m pretty sure this would’ve been written different if they would’ve been people of color
Since people want to steal cars maybe they should do a challenge about this is what happens when you steal challenge
Let's see them do this on my manual.
Endless Car Stalls 😂
You don't need to know how to drive a standard vehicle to know how to steal it and crash it.
What about everyone who owned a Honda from 87 to 2010?
Pointing a gun at someone over a material object is so dumb.
Then why don't you stop consuming "material objects" such as food? 😂😂😂
Did that fool just cuss during a news interview lol
Owning a Manual Transmission car helps.
Yup because most people nowadays dont know what a manual transmission is
All a standard would do differently is get more damage to the engine. It does not help at all.
@@Robbie-mw5uu Umm...Yeah, if they can't drive manuals, they won't get very far very fast. In any event, it takes me about a minute to get to my car, so they won't be going anywhere except to the afterlife.
Not sure if it works on the keyless pushbutton.
Use a Club or a clutch club(you put it on the brake pedal in an automatic.)
I have a 2018 kia soul but it takes a key it's not push to start. Do I still need to worry?
Yea because your kia is a 2018 and the 2011-2021 kia souls are affected with this
@@robs_garage0278 I understand that but it seems to only be those with a key fob that's why I specifically asked about key.
@@natashahall-baran967 the report is wrong. The push button kia can't be stolen, it's the key blade vehicle like yours are affected. The usb doesn't do anything special but just turn on ignition on as a key blade would

Why is there AUS B port inside of the stereotype out of this steering column anyways
And that's why I'm not a Hyundai or Kia fan. The last one I had was the 2017 Kia Soul before I sold it. Great looking car and very roomy, but I wouldn't buy it again now.
Bad reporting... That's not how you do it.
Did you not actually look at any of the "how to" videos?
it doesnt work with the push to start button you need the real key with no engine immobilizer
Wao! That is messup.. incredible. That is what the media do, teach the wrong things to this youngsters that don't want to do nothing. Offer them opportunities to learn a profession or a frade.
Push start isn’t being affected.
This sucks man I just got this car 😢
Worst thing about kia and hyundai is the motors. K.I.A. at 50k miles 😂😂😂
According to this report, Hyundai Motor Group fixed this in 2022 model cars.
This tells me that older models have a faulty part. Sounds to me like Hyundai Motor Group has a serious recall on their hands, or a law suit or really bad publicity.
Hyundai Motor Group needs to resolve this quickly and correctly, not sweep it under the rug and blame social media for their crappy workmanship.
Vehicles during 2010-2021 lacked standard engine immobilisers, the electronic security systems that prevent ignition until they have detected a transponder from the key fob carried by the owner.
