The reason this happens is that criminals typically know the risks involved. They know that if you shoot them, you'll get in more trouble than they would for stealing your car. They know that if they get caught, they won't get a lot of time for the crime. Low risk, high reward.
I used to leave my doors unlocked, my wallet in glove box and spare key in the glove box as well. I learned my lesson the hard way. My car was taken by some high school kids. Luckily I noticed right away and they were caught at the Taco Bell down the street. I got my car back the same night. The car smelled like beef tacos and hot sauce when I got it back.
