Actually, the only question with Steely Dan is whether the listener is worthy.
Chod is most worthy.
FM radio was amazing when it was new. Everyone was used to static over the airways , especially when weather was threatening. When a car with AM radio went under any overpass, or through a tunnel, parking garage, the radio cut out. FM changed all that. The line no static at all is about that improvement, and how nice it was to listen to FM. Plus, Am was short songs. It was so cool to listen to longer cuts or whole album sides when FM was new.
I remember before there was pop music on FM it was nothing but classical music - which was because the fidelity of FM was so much better than AM
And that’s when car stereos exploded
And deejays could play anything they wanted. Low key talk, if any, between tracks or whole albums.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker really nailed it with SD.
You weren't around when there was only AM radio. It was a horrible time, lol. Steely Dan always sound so smooth. Check out Deacon Blues.
I'm old, but wasn't around either when there were any AM radio broadcasts here. Scandinavian countries went all FM in the 1950s. One of the few upsides of a large state and a degree of socialism, I guess.
Tho this song came out as a single for a movie in 1978, I consider it a bonus to Aja.
Cee, Their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", and "Kid Charlemagne" are next for you!! Steely Dan was basically Donald Fagen -lead vocals, keyboards, songwriter and Walter Becker - Guitar, bass, backing vocals. They added in lots of great studio musicians/guest musicians. RIP Walter Becker.
The range of genius tunes from this group cannot be compared to any other group. Steely Dan is as new today as it was 45 years ago!
I was at a Romanian gathering in southern Ontario several years ago. The cousin on one of the people I was with was playing clarinet in the Romanian group on stage. The guy was slumped in a chair most of the time, almost comatose from all the booze he had, cigarette with an impossibly long ash hanging out of his mouth. But every time it was his turn to play he was up, standing on a table in front of the stage. Never missed a beat and was phenomenal. To me, that heart is in every sax and clarinet player. I HAVE LISTENED TO STEELY DAN SINCE 1972,THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG BY THEM...STONE.COLD.CLASSIC.
Now you need to check out Donald Fagan's solo album "The Nightfly" Its as good as the Steely Dan records. There isn't a bad song on the album. The title track "The Nightly is very jazzy will be one of your favorites.
I still have that album on vinyl when I first bought it in 1982, still sounds great even today.
My vote goes to MAXINE on that album; the signature and mandatory sax solo on this cut is SUH-WEET 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Jeff Porcaro on drum & percussion.....the dude they always called when they needed to knock a tune out quickly, for whatever reason. The drum-doctor didn't mess around & brought everyone's game up & on point. That's it we're done see ya later. Man, he's as sadly missed as John Bonham. He was that good. .

I know you are a drum fan. You have got to check out their track "Aja" title track of the album with the same name (obviously!). Some brilliant drumming fro Steve Gadd. You will love it!

I remember having a car that only had an AM radio and no FM, so when I got a car with an AM/FM radio and cassette player I was excited. Granted I did like the oldies station on the AM channel. That was were I would listen to songs from the 40's, 50's and 60's.
The drummer is Jeff Porcaro better known as a founding member of the band Toto. He was also a session drummer who played in this track but was not part of Steely Dan

If you are into drumming and haven't heard Aja yet, you are missing out. 4 and a half minutes to the first drum & saxophone solo, then at the very end of the song another AMAZING drum solo by the one and only Steve Gadd.
This mix is so good I say we should officially dub it the official FIFTH VERSION of FM!

Fave Steely Dan song. It is funky jazz. Love every note. I can tell that this is right up your alley, musically speaking. Mine too. I listen to a lot of hard rock and metal, but no one can deny the talent of Steely Dan. You'd have to be tone deaf.

I remember working in a record store in 1982. My manager came up to me with Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly". "Listen to this" he said. It wasn't a suggestion... Through that record I tracked back to Steely Dan and that catalouge of greatness. Thanks to people like my manager you discover artists which you might otherwise have overlooked.

My dad bought a brand new 1969 Chevy Caprice that included an FM Stereo radio. We could not believe the sound it produced. I used to sit for hours in that car in the garage listening to WDVE in Pittsburgh - at least until dad chased me out for running down the battery ! LOL

FM radio played the longer versions of songs - it was the only place you could hear the whole In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida in one chunk. AM radio was a slave to the time slot and commercials. FM was especially great late at night. Ah, youthful memories!

Put a brand new AM-FM Radio in my dad's 1974 Ford Pinto Wagon. FM was great . This song always reminds me of my dad's car .
You would appreciate the Phil Collins Big Band playing "Pick up the Pieces" They had about 5 famous sax players playing live.

On the ‘Two Against Nature’ tour, Cornelius Bumpus of Doobie Brothers was the star in the horn section. He was a brilliant woodwind artist.

This is my favorite!!! My uncle had a Plymouth Fury 3 with push button transmission...he had a record player mounted under the dash that played a stack of 45s ...cause AM radio was awful....thanks Chod for remembering our great music 💖😊

"Back in the olden days" ;-D AM radio was king. It was the only type of radio in cars, on transistor radios and it was the only place to hear popular music. The FM channels were only used for classical music, NPR type broadcasting and some foreign language broadcasting. AM had more power over distance, so reached a larger number of people. FM carried more rich and complex sounds, which is part of why classical music was there. When rock music became more complex and was breaking away from the AM disc jockey control of music, FM radio stations were a cheap and readily available format. There were dozens of little FM stations all over the place, in part because they didn’t have the range for one station to dominate. So evolving rockers rented time on (or sometimes got free access to) these stations. FM dj’s would often just put an LP record on to play the whole side, kick back, smoke a blunt and groove. We lived a couple of blocks from an underground radio station like that in the early 70s. We’d go over and hang with the dj’s some nights. Lovely memory.

No static at all is about the girls not caring "as long as the mood is right" and giving no static at all, like FM radio.
This is the one song of theirs I don't have because it wasn't on any of their albums. It was recorded during the same sessions as their those from their album Aja but wasn't released until the soundtrack to the movie FM. It was subsequently released in their greatest hits album. It features Jeff Porcaro (of Toto) on drums and members of the Eagles on backing vocals.
Looking back through your videos I'm quite shocked you haven't done Aja yet after listening to your review/reaction. It really should be next. Keep on keepin on...

Excellent reaction ! I love hearing a musician's point of view. This song is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. One cannot put Steely Dan in a box or a specific genre. There are many forms of jazz. It has unique stylings. I am thankful that Fagan and Becker chose to meld different stylings in their songs. They had a huge influence on my discovery of jazz. One of the major factors in their songs is the mixing and engineering. It's so "clean". They were able to bring up and layer the different instruments to their own style. I suppose there is not such thing as musical perfection but these guys got close. They got "in the pocket" and stayed there. Not an easy thing to do.....

Yes...Steely Dan is not a person......it is the name of the group...and it is about time....I requested this in November 2020 and December 2020.....and I got NO...NO....response...and now finally after Pink Floyd....Led Zeppelin.......Rolling Stones and others...you come back to Steely Dan's most funkiest Soulful song EVER!!! I love watching drummers. Two of my favorites were into the dance music of their time. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was big into Motown. Dave Grohl is a huge fan of disco, especially Tony Thompson.

Wow. Even though I know the song well. I had to wiki it to find out who did that sick sax solo at the end. Pete Christlieb. What surprised me me was that 3 members from the Eagles were singing harmony. I know mike McDonald was on 'Peg'.

my favorite thing about this track is actually the strings. you kind of don't really notice them but they are so beautifully mixed and impactful without us really noticing it until you listen for them. sounds so good.

There’s another band that uses an iconic saxophone, Hall & Oates have been blessed with Mr. Charley DeChant. He’s worth checking out. Fourteen #1 hits as a duo, H & O are another ‘money in the bank’ band. Charley plays other wind instruments too, and has been in the band nearly all of its existence...50 ish years. Terrific stuff!
Thanks for this reaction. It's always been my favorite version of this song. The sax is not sexy to this female but sometimes, I do weep over this particular sax solo...it's that powerful. I play Djembe, Djundjun and other African percussion instruments, so they feel more sexy to me.

Got to see The Dan for the first time in Tuscaloosa in early May.We had to weave our way through the huge mounds of debris covering most of the city after a massive tornado destroyed a large part of the city. When they did Deacon Blue, the line , They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, took on a different meaning knowing that all around almost 70 people had been killed. Many probably had tickes to this show. It was a fantastic show but everyone seemed to be somber at best. It was kinda like having a concert in a cemetery.
I know that when Wilburn gets the stink face in the first 20 seconds of a song, it's going to be a great reaction.

Donald Fagan and Walter Becker (RIP).. They are coming (or did come) to our area for a concert and I would usually go; however, sadly I have become disabled and the venue is outside and although I could attend and have a scooter in the area with seats, my heart will always be to sit further back on the hill with my bestie of over 40 years, waiting for the sun to go down and the breeze to blow because it's always scorching hot in Houston (Woodlands) Texas and the hill area does not lend itself to a scooter..plus I just don't know how I feel about Walter Becker being replaced.. I somehow don't think it would be the same without his traditional opening banter for Hey Ninteen talking about his "Cuervo Gold and fine Colombian".. that being said, if you have not checked it out, you should definitely react to Babylon Sisters (shake it) and The Fez.. or Janie Runaway.. or Kid Charlemagne.. just so many great jazzy tunes. Hey love your channel. I'm a percussionist myself. Played trap set and marched tritoms in Marching band. I love the Sax wishing I could play it also one of my fav. instruments. The other that gives me a lot of emotion is the Chelo. Wish I would have taken that up. Keep up the work.
