When a car with AM radio went under any overpass, or through a tunnel, parking garage, the radio cut out. FM changed all that. The line no static at all is about that improvement, and how nice it was to listen to FM. Plus, Am was short songs. It was so cool to listen to longer cuts or whole album sides when FM was new.
I'm old, but wasn't around either when there were any AM radio broadcasts here. Scandinavian countries went all FM in the 1950s. One of the few upsides of a large state and a degree of socialism, I guess.
Cee, Their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", and "Kid Charlemagne" are next for you!! Steely Dan was basically Donald Fagen -lead vocals, keyboards, songwriter and Walter Becker - Guitar, bass, backing vocals. They added in lots of great studio musicians/guest musicians. RIP Walter Becker.
I was at a Romanian gathering in southern Ontario several years ago. The cousin on one of the people I was with was playing clarinet in the Romanian group on stage. The guy was slumped in a chair most of the time, almost comatose from all the booze he had, cigarette with an impossibly long ash hanging out of his mouth. But every time it was his turn to play he was up, standing on a table in front of the stage. Never missed a beat and was phenomenal. To me, that heart is in every sax and clarinet player. There’s another band that uses an iconic saxophone, Hall & Oates have been blessed with Mr. Charley DeChant. He’s worth checking out. Fourteen #1 hits as a duo, H & O are another ‘money in the bank’ band. Charley plays other wind instruments too, and has been in the band nearly all of its existence...50 ish years. Terrific stuff!
The drummer is Jeff Porcaro better known as a founding member of the band Toto. He was also a session drummer who played in this track but was not part of Steely Dan
Fave Steely Dan song. It is funky jazz. Love every note. I can tell that this is right up your alley, musically speaking. Mine too. I listen to a lot of hard rock and metal, but no one can deny the talent of Steely Dan. You'd have to be tone deaf.

My dad bought a brand new 1969 Chevy Caprice that included an FM Stereo radio. We could not believe the sound it produced. I used to sit for hours in that car in the garage listening to WDVE in Pittsburgh - at least until dad chased me out for running down the battery ! LOL
This “fan-maximized” mix of the track with both outro’s included was the wise choice, here. It’s so good, I’m surprised that Walter and Donald didn’t do it this way themselves.
I remember working in a record store in 1982. My manager came up to me with Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly". "Listen to this" he said. It wasn't a suggestion... Through that record I tracked back to Steely Dan and that catalouge of greatness. Thanks to people like my manager you discover artists which you might otherwise have overlooked.

It was recorded during the same sessions as their those from their album Aja but wasn't released until the soundtrack to the movie FM. It was subsequently released in their greatest hits album. It features Jeff Porcaro (of Toto) on drums and members of the Eagles on backing vocals.

"Back in the olden days" ;-D AM radio was king. It was the only type of radio in cars, on transistor radios and it was the only place to hear popular music. The FM channels were only used for classical music, NPR type broadcasting and some foreign language broadcasting. AM had more power over distance, so reached a larger number of people. FM carried more rich and complex sounds, which is part of why classical music was there. When rock music became more complex and was breaking away from the AM disc jockey control of music, FM radio stations were a cheap and readily available format. There were dozens of little FM stations all over the place, in part because they didn’t have the range for one station to dominate. So evolving rockers rented time on (or sometimes got free access to) these stations. FM dj’s would often just put an LP record on to play the whole side, kick back, smoke a blunt and groove. We lived a couple of blocks from an underground radio station like that in the early 70s. We’d go over and hang with the dj’s some nights. Lovely memory.

Excellent reaction ! I love hearing a musician's point of view. This song is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. One cannot put Steely Dan in a box or a specific genre. There are many forms of jazz. It has unique stylings. I am thankful that Fagan and Becker chose to meld different stylings in their songs. They had a huge influence on my discovery of jazz. One of the major factors in their songs is the mixing and engineering. It's so "clean". They were able to bring up and layer the different instruments to their own style. I suppose there is not such thing as musical perfection but these guys got close. They got "in the pocket" and stayed there. Not an easy thing to do.....
I love watching drummers. Two of my favorites were into the dance music of their time. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was big into Motown. Dave Grohl is a huge fan of disco, especially Tony Thompson.
Donald Fagan and Walter Becker (RIP).. They are coming (or did come) to our area for a concert and I would usually go; however, sadly I have become disabled and the venue is outside and although I could attend and have a scooter in the area with seats, my heart will always be to sit further back on the hill with my bestie of over 40 years, waiting for the sun to go down and the breeze to blow because it's always scorching hot in Houston (Woodlands) Texas and the hill area does not lend itself to a scooter..plus I just don't know how I feel about Walter Becker being replaced.. I somehow don't think it would be the same without his traditional opening banter for Hey Ninteen talking about his "Cuervo Gold and fine Colombian".. that being said, if you have not checked it out, you should definitely react to Babylon Sisters (shake it) and The Fez.. or Janie Runaway.. or Kid Charlemagne.. just so many great jazzy tunes. Got to see The Dan for the first time in Tuscaloosa in early May.We had to weave our way through the huge mounds of debris covering most of the city after a massive tornado destroyed a large part of the city. When they did Deacon Blue, the line , They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, took on a different meaning knowing that all around almost 70 people had been killed. Many probably had tickes to this show. It was a fantastic show but everyone seemed to be somber at best. It was kinda like having a concert in a cemetery.

my favorite thing about this track is actually the strings. you kind of don't really notice them but they are so beautifully mixed and impactful without us really noticing it until you listen for them. sounds so good.

You had to buy a FM radio add-on and self-install on the bottom of the dashboard. That was the crucial hookup and stations were laying so much 70s classic rock, especially the commercial free college DJs who played full albums.
You most certainly aren't going to find this flavour on Apple Music. It's definitely my goto version as it has both the fantastic sax + beautiful guitar (Nod to Dave Gilmour) solos. I no longer have to choose. Not available in stores.
This is my favorite!!! My uncle had a Plymouth Fury 3 with push button transmission...he had a record player mounted under the dash that played a stack of 45s ...cause AM radio was awful....thanks Chod for remembering our great music 💖😊
You must react to the song Aja. If you've never heard of drummer Steve Gadd, Aja was his debut with Fagen and Becker, along with Wayne Shorter on sax. It's epic!
Thanks for this reaction. It's always been my favorite version of this song. The sax is not sexy to this female but sometimes, I do weep over this particular sax solo...it's that powerful. I play Djembe, Djundjun and other African percussion instruments, so they feel more sexy to me.

Try hitting "Dancing in the moonlight" by King Harvest, or the Hues Corporation "Rock the Boat" or the Three Degrees "When Will I See You Again". On the ‘Two Against Nature’ tour, Cornelius Bumpus of Doobie Brothers was the star in the horn section. He was a brilliant woodwind artist.

Put a brand new AM-FM Radio in my dad's 1974 Ford Pinto Wagon. FM was great . This song always reminds me of my dad's car .

It was a fantastic show but everyone seemed to be somber at best. It was kinda like having a concert in a cemetery.

my favorite thing about this track is actually the strings. you kind of don't really notice them but they are so beautifully mixed and impactful without us really noticing it until you listen for them. sounds so good.

Hey love your channel. I'm a percussionist myself. Played trap set and marched tritoms in Marching band. I love the Sax wishing I could play it also one of my fav. instruments. The other that gives me a lot of emotion is the Chelo. Wish I would have taken that up. Keep up the work.

A bad movie with a great soundtrack. Basically, a bunch of hippies takes over an FM Station because they are trying to take away their last Rock station (LOL).........They then proceed to jam the hell out !!
You picked the perfect version of this song all the guitar and sax goodness that is available!
You had to buy a FM radio add-on and self-install on the bottom of the dashboard. That was the crucial hookup and stations were laying so much 70s classic rock, especially the commercial free college DJs who played full albums.
You most certainly aren't going to find this flavour on Apple Music. It's definitely my goto version as it has both the fantastic sax + beautiful guitar (Nod to Dave Gilmour) solos. I no longer have to choose.

This is my favorite!!! My uncle had a Plymouth Fury 3 with push button transmission...he had a record player mounted under the dash that played a stack of 45s ...cause AM radio was awful....thanks Chod for remembering our great music 💖😊

You must react to the song Aja. If you've never heard of drummer Steve Gadd, Aja was his debut with Fagen and Becker, along with Wayne Shorter on sax.

This song is on Ten Years of Steely Dan. It was the first album I bought when we got a CD player. That will tell you how old they are - or me...
You would appreciate the Phil Collins Big Band playing "Pick up the Pieces" They had about 5 famous sax players playing live.
Thanks for this reaction. It's always been my favorite version of this song. The sax is not sexy to this female but sometimes, I do weep over this particular sax solo...it's that powerful. I play Djembe, Djundjun and other African percussion instruments, so they feel more sexy to me.

Somebody was throwing shade at AM radio. I am old enough that my first musical revelations were AM radio. Try hitting "Dancing in the moonlight" by King Harvest, or the Hues Corporation "Rock the Boat" or the Three Degrees "When Will I See You Again". Dial your way back music machine back a few more years and your head will explode! Journey on, Chod!
Soooo darn smooth..Steely Dan always defied traditional labeling in my opinion, just their own entity, like Pink Floyd. Great music. Hope you can check out Peg, Hey nineteen, and as others have said Deacon blues. Peace and love.
