For all you young'uns out there. Those of us that listened to songs on the radio in remote areas had to find AM stations. FM stations were reserved for cities and high population areas because the signal didn't travel as far. When I first heard an FM station, I could not believe how clear and crisp the sound was and it was in stereo! "No static at all"!!! The experience was night and day.
As already mentioned, many of us grew up listening to music on the radio on an AM (Amplitude Modulation) frequency (also known in Europe as MW, or Medium Wave). It was mono, not stereo, lots of static, poor sonic quality and would fade out after dark. FM (Frequency Modulation) was a quality revelation to music lovers, and dedicated music FM radio stations sprung up overnight. Hence the lyrics about no static and playing all night, having parties, etc. Happy you guys live in a digital age.
And don't forget about Musak!

I remember my transistor radio and the little square battery it used😂😂😂😂. When I discovered FM, I was all over it like a duck on a june bug!! 😂😂😂
AM did not fade out after dark. In fact it was just the opposite . In the USA , there used to be many AM stations that had licencies that only allowed them to broadcast until sundown. This was because of an atmospheric phenomena called e- skip which in someways allowed radio waves to bounce off of the atmosphere and be received at great distances. So there were some very powerful “ clear station” radio stations that had huge range after sunset when the other sundown stations stopped broadcasting on that frequency
There are two official versions. One with the Walter Becker guitar outro, which appears of the FM soundtrack and on the Decade of Steely Dan compilation. The other version has the Pete Christlieb sax outro, which appears of the Greatest hits compilation and on the 2-disk Showbiz Kids compilation. The version you played which has both outros is an unofficial fan creation.
Thanks for typing that so I didn't have to. I *really* like the Frankenstein version. Walter Becker does a great Dave Gilmouresque guitar solo and the sax is superb. I don't like having to choose.
I have often heard it said that Steely Dan had the most perfectly produced music in the industry. It sounds impeccable.

You hear that comment a million times for lots of bands: "They never made a bad song". I've heard them all and to me the only band this is really true for is Steely Dan. Not a bad song in the bunch!

I have not listened to much Steely Dan, although I know the name and have heard some of their songs over the years. I wouldn't say I was a massive fan but this song was really good and I enjoyed it - loved the beat, the sax and it just had a really nice feel to it, so maybe I should check them out a bit more - you never know! I was in your shoes about 10 years ago. I knew like 2-3 songs that I enjoyed but never looked into them. This year I finally bought Aja album and was blown away. I then bought royal scam album and was blown away again. What I notice is as I get older I appreciate their sound so much more.

You may not know--FM was a radio channel back in the day. AM radio had a lot of static, and the music would be going in and out, but the FM channels were static-free. That's why they sing "No static at all--FM" It was reletively new back when they wrote this. Steely Dan is like nothing else.

I remember hearing this for the first time at the end of my senior year in high school. It’s a stand-alone song; it wasn’t on any album. Before this came out, they released their album “Aja”, a masterpiece. This band is in its genre. The jazz is first-rate. But it’s also rock. I don’t think anyone that listens to Steely Dan doesn’t like and appreciate them.
Joann l couldn't agree more, for me they wrote some of the greatest music ever. I'm not sure if it's because Pretzel Logic was the first SD album I bought, but it's always been my favourite, l just love the short snappy songs on that one. The first five albums are the ones l like the most, l know AJA is a wonderful achievement of theirs, but it's almost too polished for me, preffering songs like My Old School, Change of the Guard, Midnight Cruiser, Razor Boy, Boston Rag, Caves of Altamira, Everything You Did, etc.
There is probably somebody who doesn't like SD, but only a fool would say that! ☺

The Moody Blues! Fantastic band who wrote some wonderful songs, one of their best for me is New Horizons from the Seventh Sojourn album, I've loved that song from the first time l heard it.
The Moodies, my second favorite band (First is Tull).
Yeeeeesssss love the moodies and def need to play full version from Days of future passed... also recommend giving Procul Harem Whiter shade of pale a listen.
One thing about Steely Dan albums - The Engineers mixing the tracks. They are mixed to perfection with the most amazing clarity of sound. All their albums are like this. Donald Fagen & Walter Becker were perfectionists in the studio. Few artists could achieve this level of recording & mixing.... The duo called "Yello" are the same with their albums with unbelievable sound quality mixed by Deiter Meier & Boris Blank who sing and play & record to sonic bliss. So many albums with incredible music. Tracks like "Call It Love" - "Desire" - "You Better Hide" - "Sometimes" ....The list is endless. You may know a very famous track used in the movie "Ferris Bueller' Day Off" called "Oh Yeah". .... Great reaction to a brilliant track and you even got the best version. Nice one !

I always wish that SD would extend the jams at the end of some of their songs for a couple more minutes...and in this "extended version" they do just that.. Reeling in the Years is another one I wish was a few minutes longer..
Great song, I'm a old guy,not great on the computer,, I stumbled on to these reaction videos, I love it, young people reacting to the music I grew up on. I don't know now to get a reguest to you. But please listen to Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Something is coming our way, live at the Agora theater. You will love it. Frank has been around since 1972, he was only 16 when his first album came out, the song a show I requested is from 2014.

Your reaction to this song is spot on. Fagen and Becker know which musician to get for every song. Then they have the uncanny ability to relay to these musicians exactly WHAT they want to hear. I personally know of no other bands that do what they do. Then... they hire the best recording engineers to achieve the sound they are trying to achieve. I saw an interview with Donald Fagen and he explained that during the recording process musical perfection is often achieved. He said that is not what his goal is. Apparently he and Walter want to go above and beyond that standard to achieve something that is cimpletely in a league of it's own. We are the lucky onesthat get to hear the relults of their passion for music.
Great selection! Walter Becker was capable of handling guitar solos himself, as this proves. Background vocals by The Eagles, who were great friends of Steely Dan.

You need to check out Kamakiriad, Donald Fagen's second solo album. It was recorded about 10 years after this song. There have been no reaction videos from Kamakiriad. You could be the first. All songs are perfect but listen to: Trans-Island Skyway, Springtime, and my favorite Florida Room. Incredible!!!

FM Refers to broadcast radio, which still exists :) FM Radio, has a cleaner signal and sound, compared to AM Radio. It was quite an improvement back n' the day. FM radio stations played better music like this, not just Top 40

This is the extended version that never made it to the album. The final version only has that sweet, dreamy guitar solo at the end.
I don't know which album you're referring to, this tune first appeared on the FM movie soundtrack double album with the guitar outro, but the last track on side 4 was a "reprise" with only the sax coda. Then for a compilation someone decided the guitar solo had to be replaced by the sax. Then a fan decided to add the sax outro solo to the original guitar one, which is the (unofficial) version played here.

My favorite Steely Dan song is hard to pick, but I’d say DR. WU really is the best example of the Steely Dan experience, as a whole. It’s on the Katy Lied album, and the first 2 words of the song is Katy Lies!
