Okay, a little history for the younger people from an old fucker.
Back in the day all music was on AM radio, all static and all. In the early 70's when all FM radio was nothing but classical and Muzak (elevator music), rock stations began migrating to FM. (no static at all)
And all the DJs spoke in an almost whisper.
♫ Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end...♫ ☺

Back in the day, FM (Frequency Modulation) was amazing. FM stations were clear as a bell, and they offered stereo as well.
One might listen to AM stations to hear favorite hits repeated, but the sound quality didn’t compare to FM. You could count on there being “no static at all.”

This was written and performed for the Soundtrack to the Movie "FM"...which is an excellent soundtrack and the movie is a reasonably accurate insight into late 70's radio culture before the FCC allowed the Corporations to take it over completely and essentially end radio as a cultural icon and force for creativity and musical expression......

When FM radio was introduced it gave you limited range for the signal, but the signal modulated with sound on the Radio Frequency which typically was pumped out 100,000 watts (the upper FCC limit). This eliminated interference to the local signal, while it also made available frequencies space 200k Hz apart. This allowed a LARGE AUDIO BANDWIDTH that AM couldn't accommodate (only 10KHz apart) 20 times the space for sound. This allowed for Stereo. FM = NO static at all.
1964 was big year for Stereo Recording, Psychedelics', and the Beatles had met Dylan, their lyrics changed for the betterment of mankind.
AM radio rode on the 3rd component of the radio signal, which is Amplitude (overall power footprint) . As the strength of the signal varies so does the quality of the sound. And interference is inevitable from power transformers and sun activity. At night the Absence of sun ALLOWS interference from distant stations. So everyone cuts power. AM will talk half-way around the world on as little as 1,000 Watts. But the frequency must match atmospheric conditions.
