But worse was the rejection he received from his colleagues in the scientific community. He wanted to enhance safety at the nuclear power plants for so many years. Well before Chenobyl. Only his suicide caused shockwaves big enough for finally admitting he was right. But this did not resurrect him from his grave.

10:35 When Legasov mentions the fatal flaw in AZ-5, Dyatlov shows genuine suprise. Legasov was the only one (of the characters) that knew about the positive void coefficient...though he states that he didn't think it could possibly cause a core explosion.

    • @Big_Bag_of_Pus
      @Big_Bag_of_Pus Год назад +5

Not quite. Everyone knew that RBMK reactors had a positive void coefficient; it's a natural consequence of using water for cooling while using graphite for moderation(in contrast to PWR and BWR designs, which use water for both and thus have a negative void coefficient, because steam bubbles decrease the effectiveness of the moderator).
What wasn't well-known was the positive reactivity swing associated with scramming when nearly all the control rods had been removed because of graphite on the rods.

I remember when the news about Chernobyl broke. I was an eleven year-old child living in North West England, where part of the radioactive contamination plume reached due to the wind conditions. I recall we weren’t allowed to hang out or play outside at school for a few days whilst it passed. Some parts of Cumbria to the north were allegedly affected but these are also coincidentally close to the Sellafield Nuclear Power Station so … make of that what you will. Not much information came out of the Soviet Union but it was clear that something very serious had happened. It was a bit scary even as far away as England. If they hadn’t managed to stop the reactor meltdown then the steam explosion would have been truly massive, ejecting so much reactor material into the air that most of Europe would still be uninhabitable.

Welcome to the final episode...well done getting through this show...it is a tough one. I really like the way the makers of the show added the notes at the end to cover some of the things they got wrong, simplified, or made more dramatic...I just wish they had done more of that, or been more honest. For example, they say that "it has been reported" that everyone on the "Bridge of Death" died...but those reports are very much NOT true....so technically, they are being truthful, bur not quite. Other things they do not admit to, I can understand...such as the fact that Legasov was not even at the trial of Dyatlov and company...but it is kind of necessary to turn him into a kind of hero figure and have him do much more than he really did so that the story can be simplified enough for most folks to keep track of. I assume by now you have read the History vs Hollywood article, so you know most of the truth...at least I hope that is the case.👍

From what some experts said, the Bridge of Death was more anecdotal, and couldn't be confirmed. Also, the statement "the reactor is now a nuclear bomb.." is incorrect, as it's not possible for a reactor to detonate like a nuclear bomb.

I’ve heard people compare this to Titanic in terms of the hubris. That’s certainly valid but the difference is that with Titanic, they knew that it COULD sink if you actually tried by say, drilling holes in the hull. They just didn’t think any accident could cause it to sink. With RBMK 1000 reactors they genuinely believed that explosions were impossible. No matter how hard you pushed it they would melt down at worst. It’s like if your house burned down and the fireman said it was because your refrigerator exploded. That doesn’t make sense, there’s nothing in refrigerators that explode.

A few very good limited-run series' that you might want to consider:
"Band Of Brothers" (2001, 10 episodes) dramatized true story based on a book by historian Stephen Ambrose of the collected recollections of a group of WW2 veterans.
"From the Earth to the Moon" (1998, 12 episodes) dramatized true story of the US Apollo space program
    and some good fiction series:
"Shogun" (1980, 5 episodes) set in a fictional version of 1600 Japan, with series characters representing historical people but with different names. From a book by James Clavell. "Episodes" are long, 2+ hours each. Starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune.
"Dune" (2000) & "Children of Dune" (2003) 3 parts each, total 6 parts. Each is 3x 90-min episodes, extended versions are 3x 2-hour episodes. Best story adaption of the books, but not as large a budget for CGI as the 2021 version.
"Bosch" (2014) Detective drama based on books by Michael Connelly. each season is based on 1-2 books in the series. 7 seasons + 1 spin-off season, 10 eps per season. Spinoff series has 2nd season releasing this year. Staring Titus Welliver & Lance Riddick.
"Reacher" (2022) based on the books by Lee Child. 8 episodes, 2nd season releasing this year.
"The Mandalorian" (2019) 8 eps per season. 3 seasons, 4th season in post-production, 5th season in pre-production. Spin-offs: "The Book of Boba Fett" 1 season, "Ahsoka" 1 season in post-production, 2nd in pre-production, "Bo Katan" 1 season in production, "Fennec Shand" 1st season in pre-production.
"Andor" (2022) 12 episodes per season. 1 season, 2nd season in production.

I'm 44 right now. I was born and I've spent my youth in communist Poland, about 600 km from Chernobyl, 50 km from polish-belarussian border. You can count how young I was when Chernobyl have exploded. My sister back then was still a baby. She was sick because of radiation. I was old enough to withstand it with no major issues. Though it could've weakened me because I've been of weak heath since then. A common cold is a trouble for me and can easily put me into bed if I'm not careful.
Nobody told us anything. Parents have learned about Chernobyl explosion from Radio Free Europe being transmitted from The West in Polish. Government controlled media kept silent.
Communism is an inhuman, barbaric system. Nobody knows this better than us, the Poles. Which is precisely why we hate Russia so much.
Don't be mistaken. Putin is an ex-officer from KGB. Nearly all people who rule Russia right now are basically like that. The elections there are a lie and the winner is known before the elections even begin. In fact how much money regions are given is directly related to the support for the winner in the elections. And the winner is always the same: Putin and his crooks.
This is not only a series about how USSR was back then. It's also the series about how Russia is right now. Which should tell you all you need to know about how come Russia struggles on Ukraine when it's supposed to be a second most powerful army in the world after the US alone.

During the behind-the-scenes interview, Mazin [ creator of the show ]said:
"Dyatlov made decisions that no rational person ever should have made. He made crazy choices and in the trial, Dyatlov does say the following thing: 'I will not say that I am guilty, but I cannot say that I'm not.' I thought that was a remarkable expression of - at least the potential - of guilt. In its own way, the statement was very Soviet, to have it both ways."
