Adam I think for me the emotional reaction is often about realising that you are witnessing or have witnessed greatness. With Paul I am often in wonder as to how can one person have done all this. It’s absolutely mind blowing.

Absolutely....there's something very powerful about watching greatness BEING great..especially up close.

Marvellous list Adam and wonderfully presented. As you said, there could be countless other alternative lists and they'd probably all be great and correct, such is the almost absurdly high quality of his back catalogue. But for me they would have to contain 1. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End, 2. Maybe I'm Amazed, 3. Band on the Run, and 4. Live and Let Die. Change the order, add others, that's fine with me, but include these four.
    1. You said it. The emotion of this suite hits me every time. The last proper song on the last recorded Beatles album, how can you not well up? "Smiles awake you..." - what a vocal!
    2. So good that it would be in the top drawer of their catalogue if it had been a Beatles song. Breathless songwriting and emotion.
    3. I also had this as a young kid. It was my first album from a solo Beatle and I sometimes think I started too high, because it's the benchmark that everything else has had to come up to over the years. But if I was told now that I could only listen to this track from the album, I'd still be happy.
    4. I'm also a Beatles and Bond nut and LALD is one of my favourite films in the series, mainly for the music. The song is probably the greatest Bond theme and George Martin's production plays a bit part in that. George's score for the film is also up there with the best, and when you think that John Barry is the maestro, then that's praise indeed.
Happy Birthday, Paul. Thanks for everything!

I find anyone who can break Paul's career down into 10 songs fascinating. You take a decade as a Beatle, another decade as a founder of Wings, and 40+ as a solo artist you have a mammoth body of work. Kudos to you for sharing your 10 favorite or your choice of his 10 best. I can't name my top 10 right now but I will someday. Thanks again for your videos and your efforts!

If I did, it would probably have to include all eras or I might do a top 10 Paul Beatle, top 10 Wings, and top 10 solo. I'll post it here in a few days.

Your very personal take on the music made this a real pleasure Adam. It's not one I could really take on but this was the way to do it. A marvellous list and every one belongs there. The number one for me would probably have been Let It Be because it was such a personal song about his mother; yet it became a hymn for the end of '60s optimism, the end of the Beatles, and the way ahead.

    • @rockrecordsreviewed1880

Thanks Phil, Let It Be should probably have been on the list in hindsight, for all the reasons you give.

I'm so glad to see "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" on the list. many of my friends think I'm crazy for liking that song-in fact, it's my favorite post-Beatles McCartney song. the combination of wistfulness and humor makes me smile every time

"Temporary Secretary" is a side of him I don't like. but you can't expect %100 quality in a 60 year recording career

I just wanted to add one more comment about something you talk about in this video, Adam, being moved to tears by a piece of music that isn't even sad but that somehow connects with some emotional recess. Completely different musically, but the piece that comes to mind for me is the mezzo aria Voi che sapete from the Mozart opera The Marriage of Figaro. I don't know why, it's a charming and upbeat number, and yet it always makes me cry, and despite the wealth of great music surrounding it, for me it's the highlight of the opera. Actually maybe Mozart and McCartney aren't all that different, pop stars who are brilliant melodists, who can be whimsical, even precious, but are also capable of tapping into that ineffable vein of humanity.

This is my favourite episode yet. Your review of Golden Slumbers and Band on the Run are very touching and really get across the genuine love we can have for music. Missing out Yesterday is a complete surprise and you’re absolutely right about Guns and Roses version of Live and Let Die. They played it safe and attempted a note for note cover but got it so wrong. Not quite as wrong as their version of Knocking on Heaven’s Door though which made want to to crash my car into a tree the first time I heard it on the radio

I am 56 years old now and I was also brought up with McCartney's music. The Beatles were my favourite band with The Monkees in second place lol. Then Sweet appeared as a current band and I loved them, Suzi Quatro and of course ... Slade.

There was always something of the Beatles about Slade, and How Does It Feel was arguably their finest recording. McCartney's influence was all over it but the boys from Slade totally owned it. A wonderful record.

If I had to pick a favorite Beatle, it would probably be Lennon, based simply on the fact that if I named my top 50 Beatles songs, there would probably be a few more Lennon songs than McCartney. That being said, I think McCartney was the most important member of the Beatles, and Lennon needed McCartney more than McCartney needed Lennon. By that I mean that, at least from what I've heard, McCartney was the one pushing the band to experiment, sometimes against the more conventional tendencies of his bandmates. Making Sgt. Pepper's a concept album of sorts was his idea, as was the Abbey Road medley. Granted, I'm not a Beatles fanatic so I might be wrong about this. I do admit he can be precious at times, and many of my least favorite Beatles songs were written by him, another reason why I would vote Lennon as my favorite, but I still get angry when I hear that people like Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love and Blender magazine have denigrated his exemplary songwriting skills. Anyway, here are some of my favorite McCartney songs, and I'm sure later in the day I'll remember some others and kick myself for not mentioning them: Michelle, Birthday, Hello Goodbye, Penny Lane, Paperback Writer, She's Leaving Home, Lovely Rita, Hey Bulldog, and one of my favorite songs ever, as well as my top Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby. I also like some of the stuff with Wings and on his early solo albums, with the non album track Junior's Farm an underrated classic. Thanks for the video.
