- Ingredients:
4 cups beef broth
8 ounce can tomato sauce
3/4 cup uncooked long-grain rice
2 bay leaf
1 Tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp parsley
2 small spoon olive oil
A pinch of salt & pepper
1 pound ground beef
1 onion diced
2 tsp small garlic
4 cups chopped green cabbage
2 carrots sliced
My family has been making that for 60 years. Love a huge pot of cabbage soup. Works great in a thermos for work
Do you put onion in yours?
It’s probably not even that bad for you calories wise too
@@denisevulliet7332you can eat as much as you want lol
@@denisevulliet7332normally it's made in winter so you can eat as much as you can
@@Gramma167I make it at home. I substitute bell pepper for the onion
Love cabbage...love (Ukrainian-style) cabbage rolls
Right after watching this earlier I made the recipe and eating it now. It's very good! Cabbage rolls are one of my favorite dishes.
The soup looks wonderful. But I absolutely am in love with your pot.
I started cooking when I was 6 & it's a good thing I did because little did I know at that time,, I would raise myself from 9 years old on & the very 1st full meal I made was cabbage rolls.
Cabbage is very good for you wise child😊
My favorite dish. If you find yourself alone again, I will cook for you. Your story broke my heart. 😢
I hope that you will give the Lord Jesus glory for seeing you through a rough time❤😢😮
@sherrysimpson4966 Thank you,, Very kind of you..I don't know if it will make you feel any better about .y story,, But it is now 53 years later & although i'm a humble man,, I can/will say that I am proud of the man I raised myself to be..May life always find you well & smiling Miss Sherry 😃❤️
@robbiediles4242 Thank you,, But I Am Native American/Navajo.
Simple, hearty, healthy, and delicious!
Yeah ask that sugar is really good for you.
Yeah all that sugar is really good for you.
@@slappy8941that was barely any sugar. A can of coke has way more sugar than that.
Except for that rapeseed oil
@@WINDSORTOWNSAVagree. The beef fat was good enough. Don't need to add weird stuff.
Thats my kind of soup!
You bet! I love cabbage rolls, and soup. cabbage roll for a lot less effort in a soup form. I'm writing this one down!!
@@mescko it's a great probiotic!
I’m thawing a lb of ground lamb, and a pound of turkey. And I’ll finish with your recipe. Thanks ought be the bomb. 💥 lots of cayenne with a few chili flakes.
Thank you for listing your ingredients in the description. Looks fantastic!
Excellent recipe for comfort food. Thanks.
Looks Delicious 😋 Can't wait to make.👍
You are an addict. A sugar junkie. Brown sugar is white sugar with a little deadly caramel. Sugar is NOT NUTRITIOUS!
LOVE this soup. I am willing to bet this soup is even better cooked in this great pot. We have a similar pan, a little bit more shallow. We call it our turkey pan. Makes the best turkey gravy.
I’d bet that it’s a Magna-light pot. I have one to, it makes the best white beans ever! Mine has the lid also. I have the two smaller pots to.
I am thinking it will taste even better a day later
Looks great. I wish my family enjoyed cabbage the way I do.
Looks delicious!!
That looks great! Thanks for that. These are my favourite types of dinner.
Never had cabbage soup but it looks delicious!!! 🧂🧅🧄🥬🥕🥫
This was a meal that we had pretty regularly when I was a kid. Delicious.
LOOKS SO GOOD !!!!!!
I can't get over that well seasoned vessel
Cast aluminum. Low quality. leaches metals into your food
It "was" coated in a non stick by the looks of it. Not seasoned just scraped 😂
@@kevinfart8389thanks Debbie
@@Corieorieorienah, that's an old Magnalite pot. They're not coated.
@@kevinfart8389Old folks SWEAR by these old Magnalite pots. I'll take cast iron.
I just made this, and it's PERFECT! Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe!
Cabbage roll soup is absolutely amazing! I don't make it exactly like this, but close!
That is my kind of cooking. Simple and delicious.
I make that but no carrots.
I also make it using chopped green peppers instead of cabbage. It tastes like stuffed peppers. Both are delicious. ❤❤❤
Yummmmm
❤I love your cook pot
Sure looks great !
This Looks Really Really Delicious
Looks amazing. Im gonna try that .
Browning off
Don't forget the paprika. Looks great.
Smoked paprika .
Eating this right now it’s delicious thanks for inspiration.
I want one of these pots. It looks like it cooks so well.
Magnalite, look em up, totally worth buying.
This looks incredible!!
Add curry powder and you have Australian style Ki si min. Yummy.
What type of curry do you guys use? Sounds yummy.
@@monie2193 "Keens" curry powder, usually about a desert spoon per 500 grams of minced steak (ground beef.) Half a cabbage chopped up, 1 pkt chicken noodle soup, Carrot and celery to taste, Curry powder. Add enough water to make the gravy. cook until cabbage is cooked. Brown minced steak then add everything else. Hope that helped, Regards.
@@johnpage7735 thanks! I love curries and will have to give this one a try. Not sure which curry powder to use though since I’ve never seen the brand you mentioned.
@m.theresa1385 Any curry powder will do. Just as a note, we don't add chilli. It's a dish even kids love.
I'm so happy that I'm Jamaican 😂😂😂😂
Yum!! That looks scrumptious and filling!
We make something similar.
Beef, onion, garlic, cabbage, beef broth, seasoned with caraway seeds, pepper, salt. We usually served it with mashed potatoes. But I really like the addition of the rice and will try that next time.
Real Polish use rice.
Looks so hearty and full of nutrients!
And without the labor of cabbage rolls. Great recipe.
Nice, thanks for sharing, will most definitely try this!
Looks yummy 😋
I made this tonight, followed the recipe to the letter.
Absolutely phenomenal.
Thanks for the recipe!!
Love the banged up pan!
I was just going to comment about that pan, there were rumblings a few years ago about aluminum pans contributing to Alzheimer’s, don’t know if that was debunked or not. I remember my Mom mixing up biscuit dough in a small aluminum pan every morning for my dad, they both passed away in their 70’s without Alzheimer’s or Dementia.
That's a Magnalite roaster. Best pots you can get.
Magnalite! I have my parent's and its over 65 years old! Still great! I use it more often than my LeCrucet
You mean the old non stick pan that he's scraped all of the toxic forever metals off of and into his food. That pan is disgusting.
😂the taste comes from the skillet...it's never been washed😂
Very healthy, hearty fare perfect for cold wintertime
I'm doing keto which has helped me lose 136 lbs. I asked my wife to make this for me. No rice or brown sugar. Came out super fantastic. Had it for dinner tonight at work. I had a 14 hour day. This was absolutely delicious. My sugar was at 110 about 1.5 hours after eating it and my ketones were at .5. Thanks for sharing
Good for you buddy! Keeping that blood sugar down aint easy. Is 110 high for keto?
I lost my keto buddy and am stuck, any incentive secrets? I've lost 52 lbs so far, need to lose 40 more
110 after eating is in the normal range. Really good. A year ago my sugar would be 300 plus after dinner and 60 units of insulin
, are you checking your ketone levels with a monitor. That helps me to adjust if I'm eating too many carbs. Like too many nuts. I didn't think there were that many carbs in them but there are

What an amazing pot.
Very. Nice. I. Like. This. Dish. God. Bless. You.
That roaster was such a good one that everyone in my family had one.
I love it. Thanks for sharing.
I make something similar. It is great.
I know that pot is old because I got mine in 1978 and my moms? It comes with a lid. Great cookware!
Yeah but it used to be black inside just think how much lining y'all are thinking it's just black pepper 🤒
The pot is Aluminum I believe. Not good to cook in. My Mom had one just like it. It isn't safe to cook in. Look it up.
That/those pots were never coated it is a magnalite!!!!
Thats so delicious!! I love cabbage
This dish was commonly made during the depression,, known as depression stew,, tomatoes added when you had them & on the rare & special occasions,, meat of any kind.
Thanks for this info
Looks delicious and comforting
Note ✍️ Thank you ! For your recipe ... Looks yummmie ! 👌😋👌... Perfect 👌for Fall & Winter ❄️ Season, yummmie !! PEACE ✌️
Finally, someone who didn't drain all that flavor out 👍👍👍
We just made this and not draining the grease really ruined it for us.
yeah I always am disappointed when a recipe recommends I go against my instincts and not drain ground beef fat. I'm not even against extra fat - I just find ground beef drippings a gross flavor - I'd rather drain it and add bacon fat back to the pot @@rickdixon9933
@@rickdixon9933Sorry, Uncle Rick.
@@rickdixon9933tuff
@@rickdixon9933try browning the beef a bit longer, once the water is evaporated the beef will begin to fry in its own fat and that should help avoid an oily stew.
Delicious! I already make this, but I’ll take a few hints and tips from this video to make mine better!
I can smell this video. Yum!
Need to put some butter beans in it as well ! Looks YUMMY!❤
I am convinced that the pot you're using makes this dish look delicious. I want that pot in my life.
haha it is soup season.. i got beef barley soup bubbling away on the stove right now
I had a spaghetti sauce going. Welcome Fall!
Making some black bean soup right now
I just made this and absolutely loved it.
Thank you
Never add your garlic with your onions- they’ll burn before your onions begin to sweat. Minced garlic needs 2-3 minutes at most, while onions can go anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes depending on how done you want them.
That good advice in an empty, hot pan. Here, he's adding them to all the ground beef so it wouldn't be a problem in this type of situation.
not in the liquid from the hamburger
Nothing was browned, so nothing was at risk of burning.
@@Automedon2you don't drain the juice for certain dishes... 😂
Great comfort food for this winter!
My goodness that sure looks good. The only thing I'd do different is I'd drain the fat off.
Absolutely! I think he assumed people would know this....LOL. People who cook do.
sure if you like less flavour.
@freakboy40 he says don't drain it 😂
@@maffbuckley600 Oh, I didn't catch that thanks. No, you definitely drain that.

Chicken stock/broth can also be used.
No, it can't.
@@mehere337 Vegetarian??
@@happymethehappyone8300Uh...there is beef in this recipe.
@@mehere337 ooppss,, duh,, my bad,, I only suggested chicken stock because it's what the original "Depression Stew" used,, because it was commonly available,, but more importantly it is considered to be a close to neutral base that pairs well with whatever meat you were lucky enough to have at that time,, Although if you chose/had/used beef for your meat option,, naturally if you had it/wanted to,, you could use beef stock..In Germany,, They made an old traditional dish that's almost identical to the U.S. "Depression Stew" that they call "Cabbage Soup" (Some also calling it "Cabbage Stew")..The few differences are,, They use chunks of cubed Pork (Or ground Pork/Sausage) they use chicken stock & also add tomatoes,, finally,, after putting it in a bowl & just before they serve it,, they put a good size dollop of sour cream in the center,, most taking a spoonful of the soup/stew while also getting a little sour cream on the end of the spoon before tasting it,, while some others just put the dollop of sour cream in the soup/stew & just completely mix/blend it in.
@@happymethehappyone8300 It's your food...you can use whatever your little heart desires.
Sounds Awesomely Delicious ❤
A can of tomatoes will bring it up a notch. 😊

My German mom never put tomatoes in cabbage rolls.
That would good with sweet, wet cornbread.😊
Wow a recipe from the US without cheese!
Yes ❤ to make soups this time of year , thanks for this soup recipe going to try always Loki g for new ones 👍🏻💖✨

How can you call that a soup it's a stew
A stew must not boil. A stew is suposed to only simmer. Old saying: "A stew boiled is a stew spoiled".
Oh Yes! Can't wait to try this. LOOKS DELISH❤
YUM!!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING I AM DEFINITELY MAKING THAT ❤❤❤❤
Heck yea. I would NEVER give up my Magnalite pots. Makes the best gumbo and étouffée.
Love your seasoned pan ❤
Omg that pot is great oldie but goodie ❤
That wonderful old pot has seen some cookin'!
I like this and I will use it.
I made it tonight! Thanks for the recipe, everybody loved it😊
Looks yummy. Making this tomorrow.

Looks so tempting l love this 😀
I can smell that !! My mouth is watering !!
I subscribed because I like the pan you cook in and the seven steak and gravy recipe.
Yum, one of my fave soups ever!
That actually looks yummy!!!
Making this tonight for dinner as I type - my kitchen smells glorious. I’m adding an extra pound of lean ground turkey breast and 1/2 lb of ground beef for a total of 3 lbs of protein. My husband is prediabetic and likes extra meat in his soup/stews. I also used brown rice instead of white. Love your recipes! I’m making three of them this week. I love this soup because I can feed more people and/or have plenty for leftovers. 😊❤
Yeah that looks amazing
Looks delicious! Gonna gave to give it a go. Thanks!♥️🇺🇲
