Thanks... I can't complain too much I can sleep now... little pain compared to pre surgery.. and I can walk... and work.. can't do much physical though... but maybe it will get better... had the surgeon said you will be 90% pain free but wont be able to do basic stuff like wash your car or bring in groceries without pain I would have said OK... don't care just allow me to walk and sleep again... and he did that.. but he told me I would be back to 90% doing what I was before.. that is what sux I guess..
Sciatica pain is debilitating! Been in tears, shivering and yes feels like my leg is being cut off at times! It’s insane! Trying to get through it without surgery. Doing decompress therapy now.
The decompression only brought short relief that kept returning but it’s worth a shot. Each person and situation is different. I did few months of it trying to avoid surgery. I was in severe pain for over a year trying to heal myself because that always worked in the past with back issues. I ended up getting microdiscetomy and laminectomy. I felt immediately better after surgery! Was walking the next day a mile a day compared to not being able to make it to the bathroom and in pain 24-7 before the surgery. The recovery pain was nothing compared to what I was going through before. not even a 1 on the pain scale. I only used pain meds for a day after surgery but really didn’t even need them. The pain in my left leg, calf, and foot was all gone after surgery! I’m good now, just have some numbness left in my left foot but it’s slowly fading. Doctor said it could take a year for nerves to heal if they are going to, if not I’ll have it the rest of my life. But I’ll take it no problem compared to before. I do heavy industrial work for a living, so it’s not uncommon to pick up something over 100lbs, which I do now without problems. But I am trying to work little smarter if I can. I’ll get help to lift something or a machine, forklift etc. I don’t mind now taking the 5 extra minutes to get a forklift or hoist after going through that pain. Hope this helps.
I took the surgeon's advice... they used a spacer and fused L4/L5... I assumed he knew what was best... wondering if that spacer is not causing my pain in certain positions... They pretty much keep saying just let it heal... I assume after 7 months it would have healed by now.. but the pain I feel is what I felt around 3 weeks after surgery... so has nothing to do with segment disc caused from fusion... if they try and tell me that I am going to be pissed.... This has been going on for 8 months now so I know it was right after surgery.. but again I can function now walk and work and sleep just wish I could get back to doing other athletic things... like before... Thanks for the replies..
Just saw this message but I didn't know much about ADR at that time. I have read both good and bad things just like failed fusions. I guess I trusted my surgeon at the time and I was in so much pain I just wanted it to go away and honestly the extreme sciatic pain is 99% gone. So I really can't complain. I assume I might have to have another surgery but hopefully not anytime soon unless the pain is too much or it gets worse. I am really just trying to calm down the working out I have done for years and slow down a little. I am 55 so it is probably time, but if I was younger I probably would have opted for ADR.
August 4th update. Back is still hurting when I bend over 2 inches or even to the side 2 inches. I have an appointment 08/31/202 can't wait to see what they say. Everyone I talk to says I should not be in this type of pain. It does "not" feel muscular but more like some type of nerve or something shooting sharp pain down the lower spine. Going to see what they say or recommend and update in my next video. Dr. Called the issue Subsidence. Hopefully 2 months from this video my bones are starting to fuse?
Thanks for asking! Actually I just met with my original surgeon who did the discectomy at L4/L5 and did the fusion at L4/L5 in April of 2020 due to it rupturing again. I have spoken to several more surgeons after mine left the original practice he was with. A few think my L4/L5 did not fuse correctly. Bottom line if I go to work and sit at my desk, walk a little and go home and walk some but then just sit in a recliner and take it easy my back is fine. I can sleep, have very little back pain. But if I try and move anything or do anything slightly athletic like Pushups or dumbells or lift anything over 20 pounds I immediately have back pain and my left leg burns, and tingles. So the issue now for me is am I going to be happy just sitting around not doing as much as I want or do I want to get back to some form of working out? I have lost about 12 to 15 pounds doing the Keto diet since January of 2021. I was not over weight but figured every extra pound put stress on my spine. My original surgeon started a new practice and I was able to see him Sept 30, 2021. He told me if my wife was sitting where you are right now and had the same situation I would not recommend fusing L4/L5 and fusing L5/S1. That is what 2 surgeons told me, that L4/L5 probably did not fuse or get enough bone growth. They said my CT Scan is very vague so they can't tell. I also think my L5/S1 disc is causing issues and did a lidocaine injection a month or so ago that confirmed that was causing pain as well. So in my heart I think L5/S1 is the pain issue, but if I have that level fused it could cause more back issues down the road since I am fused at L4/L5. If the pain gets worse I might just do it or I might think about having someone go in and just clean up L5/S1 disc and see if that brings any pain relief. The problem with fusion is you can't go back I guess. I am trying to find some activities that I can do that don't bring as much back pain after. I started riding a bike recently so I am going to see how that goes. I honestly can't complain at this time because I am sleeping 7 or 8 hours now, but about 3 months ago I was getting really back right hip, thigh and lower leg pain but that has gone away, if it comes back I am sure I will push forward on surgery. If anyone has any questions feel free to shoot them too me. I feel like I have learned so much about back pain now that I can at least give some ideas of what someone might think about as a treatment. I still say my case is not like most. My back was perfect, always looked great on an xray, but the disc just ruptured everything else was fine. I take notes daily on what hurts my back and what doesn't. I try and really feel what type of pain it is, burning, sharp, or just nagging. Where is it exactly etc. I try to give the doctors enough information that I figure someone will figure it out. Good luck to anyone having back pain.
I’m sorry to hear that! I hope you have loved ones at home that help.

Hey did you get better with decompression therapy?
Any updates?

Thank you! You take care also!
feel sorry for you. but theres light at the end of the tunnel..why didnt you opt for artificial disc replacement?
