Cliff Burton is... Cliff Burton. There is no comparing him. He's the pioneer. Rob is amazing. He is a great bassist and does his predecessors justice. Jason is a beast live. No other band can say they had Satan on backing vocals. If I saw Metallica live I would want Jason there. Creeping Death is just missing something without Jason's vocals.
Jason and Robert are AMAZING bass players and any band would be better for having them. Cliff was a 1 in 1,000,000 musician, all around. His knowledge of theory, composition, appreciation for music as a whole etc etc was immense, especially for his age and the times. Cliff Burton would have become a VERY seriously important figure in music had tragedy not struck him. I whole heartedly believe this.

Rob for his presence, quiet storm demeanor, and having way more ability than he'll ever use in Metallica. Who wins? We all do. Enjoy the music that these gentlemen all contributed to. 🤘🏻

It's a no contest for Cliff ! people constantly say how great .. of a player Rob is . But forget that Cliff was only 24 years old , when he died . And look at all he contributed to the band , Orion being their greatest instrumental .Rob was much older when he joined the band , and had way more time to perfect his playing . And aside from that , on a creative level in 17 years .. has not been able to give them anything close to Cliff . Rob is just a skilled bassist , that can get up their a play tight with them on stage . Creatively he isn't on Cliffs level , or does he have the stage energy Jason brought to their live shows .
They are all great in their own rights, Jason never pretended to be Cliff, and knew he had huge shoes to fill. So instead of trying to emulate he just played his style.

It is True that cliff is the music writing mastermind but Jason is a freak live his attidute and tone are just brutal but what i dont Like that he plays with pick every time and some songs should not be Played Like that
The reason why he started out with a pick is because he literally tore the flesh off his fingers playing bass with fingers. So that's why it's his go-to. Plus tone. Plus, David ellefson uses a pick. Phil Lynnot? He used a pick. Sometimes, even John Paul Jones used a pick. Those are some of the most legendary players of all time too.
He play with pick because he chose to. When you play bass with finger in stage, it does't actually cut through the song. And because of Jason's brutal attitude in live performance, he chose to make the bass as brutal as possible. (I think) In the end of the day, pick in bass is just a choise. It depends on you.
Jason is the reason I play bass now, and also the reason I don’t feel guilty for playing using a pick instead of my fingers (damage issues just like him). He’s truly inspirational, although I will say Cliff is the better bass player because of his innovation and ability to SHRED. Jason is the intensity, Rob is the funk/technique, and Cliff is the creator/innovator/pioneer/GOAT.
Ok I am a violinist who played bass guitar maybe 3 times in all his life. Cliff Burton was Paganini from any points of view, no doubt about it! What a style, what a sound, such a feeling, technique, heart. And let’s take in count that he wrote these parts. I knew Metallica in 1988, Jason an Rob are simply great but Cliff…one of the greatest loss for music of all times. So young, poor guy what a destiny. He should be celebrated like Jimi Hendrix. This is my thought process. I could be mistaken but.. people always say Jason’s live energy is the best.but the truth is , we don’t have nearly enough proshot footage of cliff to even begin to compare them. Even Jason himself spoke of standing Infront of cliff and watching him preform, the impact it left on him. Some people say if you never saw them live with cliff, you never saw Metallica . We only wish the soundboard audio and bootlegs of that time could do the man justice. We just have the memory’s of the audience and the guys in the band to try and piece together an image. Wish time machines were mainstream:/
There’s plenty audio of cliff growling into the mic like Jason or turning on his wah pedal during a song like ride the lightning. The thing is, Cliff knew that he was a bass player, and only took the crowd’s focus when the other members okayed it.

I will be in the minority here and say that Rob is the best bassist when it comes to chops, technique, tone and putting the bass frequencies where they belong. Rob is an INSANELY good bassist, one of if not the best in the genre. Cliff's innovation will never be matched, however. Cliff's songwriting and use of melody took Metallica to the next level. Jason was incredible live and underrated in the studio. Jason is the Metallica bassist that I grew up with and will always be the one I remember first.
As much as I love Newstead, even more than I love Cliff. If Cliff hadn't written those earlier bass lines, Jason wouldn't have had those original arrangements to, in some ways, improve upon. Like, clearly, Cliff was a massive unfluence on Jason, I'm sure I read somewhere that Jason auditioned by playing the entire bass for the Master Of Puppets album. And alot like Cliff, he was a second front man for metallica in a way. Trujillo is another entity again. I loved his work with suicidal tendancies.

I saw Cliff at L'Amour. He was amazing. I was lucky enough to see them before they really broke out.
