Since your hooking this up to your receiver you should consider using the optical audio input. It is also in the back of the receiver so it is nicely tucked away.
I was using Sonos at my mother-in-laws house over xmas and really liked it but I wanted something to work with my existing stereo. The Sonos Connect is $399! I opted for the Google Chromecast at $45 (CAD). Nearly 10x cheaper.
At a Christmas party last night a friend showed me his SONOS, controlling speakers in each room in his ceiling. This looks like it would basically do the same thing, as you said you can have multiple Chromecast's in a house, each feeding a separate receiver or pre-amp. Now that I think about it though, what about volume control? Just leave the main on the receiver turned up and turn down the Chromecast's output?
I was thinking about getting a bluetooth receiver for my speakers, but if this has better sound quality then I'll get this instead! Works with soundcloud, spotify and youtube which is all I use for media anyways so I think it'd be a good purchase.
Tim, I see in this video that the device was used to cast audio to the player instead of the speakers directly. This can also be done using the Yamaha app once the A/V receiver is connected to your home network. I was expecting the A/V receiver to output the sound wirelessly to the speakers using this device. Can that be accomplished?
I have some kind of stereo in every room. Now for $30 bucks a room I can listen to same music through the house. WIFI stays connected to multiple units unlike bluetooth that were line of site and limited to only 1 or 2 units connected at same time. And its way cheaper than any alternative. For those that don't understand the 3.5 outlet supports toslink you just need to add a mini adapter to a regular toslink if you don't have a mini on one side, I had 4 adapters that came with mine laying around the house.
I know you asked this 8 months ago, but yes it is an option now. Create a group and select all devices you'd like added to that group (can include other google home devices as well) and it will cast to all simultaneously.
or at least, that they add a feature to stream video to one and audio to the other at the same time, keeping them synchronous. That would be reaaaaally cool!
+Rohit kumar You could just buy a HDMI to analog converter, and use the regular chromecast for audio purposes... Also, I dont think the chromecast audio is like a regular chromecast. The protocol, while similar, isn't exactly the same. It doesn't have video, therefore, it uses less bandwidth. Apps that support the regular chromecast dont support the chromecast audio. Only audio apps do. Also, the regular chromecast doesn't have a DAC (digital to analog converter) because it doesn't need one, and the chromecast audio also has built in optical (though you need to buy the adapter to utilize it). Also, google plans to add features to this device, such as multi-room casting, something not possible or even necessary with the regular chromecast. Either do the HDMI converter thing or just buy a chromecast audio. Personally, I'd recommend just getting the chromecast audio, since then you dont need to disconnect the device and plug it to speakers everytime you want to use it for music. Just saying.
I'm a bit confused, because when I did the setup on the Chromecast devices, I never had to change my wireless settings on my phone or tablet. I just went through setup in the Chromecast app with Bluetooth turned on. My phone and tablet connected to the Chromecast devices via Bluetooth, performed the setup, and was up and running. This was like a week ago so maybe this was simplified?
Did you try this with Plex ? I want something to stream audio to my gf radio while streaming movies on my hd from my house. This would also be awesome for powered studio monitors if you had a trs to two ts jacks. That would make an great stereo experience.
Tim, you didn´t show where you connect in Yamaha Receiver but I imagine that is "Aux" entrance. My question is: Would it work if you put in "Mic" entrance? (because my receiver has not this "Aux").
I have a TV in my room, and I would like to connect speakers so that they are next to my bed which is in front of the TV, I don't want to use wires to connect TV to the speakers, can I use this to cast the sound from TV to the speakers ? or only from mobile to speakers ?
If i get a chromecast and hook it up to my surround sound system, can I also hook up the same chromecast (via wifi) to a wireless speaker (wifi) and have music coming from the surround sound and the wireless speaker at the same time?
Excellent review! 2 questions - did you say that you can stream RUclips audio to the stereo, by mirroring? I understand you can't sync the video on the phone with the audio on the stereo, (altho that would be nice... ). Q.2, can you stream a station that broadcasts over the intenet, such as WWOZ , or SugarIntheGourd ?
Hey Tim, thank you for the video - a quick question: I use a MacBook Air to stream all my RUclips videos and Spotify music. For RUclips, I use an HDMI connection straight into my TV. All audio goes out of the headphone jack on the MacBook via a stereo RCA Y-cable into the line-in on my receiver which feeds my speakers. Keeping my current setup for video (HDMI into TV), would I be able to utilize Chromecast to go digital audio via optical out into my receiver? Thank you for your time and attention.
hey can it work with iTunes on my computer, what do i need to make that work or what third party app can I use? thanks for the video as well it was great.
I set up exactly as you did with the 3.5 jack plugged into a size adapter. The AUX input is larger than the 3.5mm cord in the box.. So, I got that plugged in, I checked the connections, volume and power. I got as far as the sound test but there is no sound. I can't get any further than that.. Any suggestions? I was very psyched to get Chromecast Audio. The set-up on the original Chromecast was so easy. I didn't expect to run into problems. Thanks, I appreciate the help.
Do you know if Google Chromecast audio can control the volume of the output using voice command with Google home? For example, I attach the Google Chromecast audio to my stereo receiver. Then I give a voice command to my Google Home to play music. Then I give a voice command to my Google Home to set the volume to 50%. Will that work? ... Or can I only adjust the volume manually with my phone volume buttons or the receiver remote? Thank you for making this video
Hey Tim, thanks for the video :) What happens if you're playing music (or casting anything else) during a party and someone calls/messages you? Does the audio get affected?
It's supposed to be a line level signal, but you can still control volume through it. Do you have any input on how this is achieved? I want my expensive amplifier to do the work, not the one in a 35USD item.
Hi, Tim! I do have the Chromecast II but I could not use the Home theater Philips together. To make it clear, I do conect videos from Netflix from my smartphone to the my LED Philips TV (not a Smart one) but could not use the Home theater nice sound system altogether. The only sound comes from the TV ( basic one). Did I miss something? ( Chromecast Audio would not change that, correct?)
Two questions: 1. Do you need any other Chromecast device for this to work? 2. Is there a way to use this (maybe in conjunction with Home) to play music from playlists on your PC? -- My PC is in my room and wired from there out to my livingroom into my 4k OLED TV (used as a monitor) with a Klipsch soundbar on the wall. So, if I plugged the CC audio into my soundbar, is there a way to maybe use Google Home to direct it to play any of my Winamp playlists? (I don't have Google Play playlists or whatever) I'm guessing the answer is no. =(
Hey Tim, so i just had a quick question. I notice at the end of the video you say the thing about hoping they will sync video and audio, but is this not possible yet? I was a bit confused because as per your demonstration, the youtube video played on your phone with the sound on the speakers so it seemed that worked. Also, couldn't you put it to the "play screen audio" mode and then just simply use netflix on your phone to have the audio play out of the speakers and watch from your phone? I'm also considering the implications of this from a laptop. If I connect this to my laptop, with my laptop plugged into my TV and I'm streaming netflix or watching a video on VLC, is there a way to play the screen sound on the laptop through my desktop speakers as I watch the movie? This would be the only reason I would want this device so thanks for your help!
after you go through the initial setup, does you phone automatically connect to the chromecast each time or do you have to do to bluetooth setting and connect it manually?
a few important questions! : 1) if I have music ONLY on my phone (not uploaded to Google play music, but I DO USE Google play music to play all of it) will I be able to play my music??? 2) can I use it in the car? probably no? Cus no WiFi, right? 3))))) I am planning to use it as just a wireless sound reciever, so I can get rid of an aux wire in my house. would I be able to cast ANY/ ALL sounds from my phone and from my computer to it??? like watch movies and listen to music on my computer, and phone. and be able to hear audio through speakers without a physical connection and etc??? if no, do u know of any good device that will allow me to do so. preferably not Bluetooth but over WiFi. thanksss!
Tim - I have an important question for you on this device. I have a grand piano that has a player system installed on it called PianoDisc. Originally it just used CDs to operate the system. I have since added a old Sansa MP3 Player to it that is connected via a 3.5mm jack and it works great. (I rarely use the CD format anymore). I was thinking of buying a Bluetooth receiver to make the operation "wireless". But of course my phone or tablet would have to be within about 30 feet at all time that the piano is playing for it to work. My question is - will this device fling the MP3 music files I have stored on my Android phone or tablet to the Chromecast Audio? And thank you for your video. EXCELLENT and well done. Cheers, Steve/OHIO
No... Anything you play on it, has to be "from the internet"... It can't be from a source locally on your device or anyone's... Even if you hav6an established connection......... It HAS to be from the internet.
Hi Tim, could you tell me roughly how long it takes to 'boot up' the chromecast audio ( once its all been setup of course ) I have a bathroom audio setup currently running a bluetooth adapter, so when the bathroom light is on it gets power and you can pair to it and stream music to the bathroom, This chromecast audio is what i've been waiting for as it no longer confines you to that space, but one thing i like about the bluetooth adapter is its immediately powered. i've already ordered a chromecast audio but would appreciate a boot up time, as in how long it takes from switching the wall power on until it shows a cast symbol on your device? many thanks
Oddly enough, you and I have the same receiver so I figured you could test this for me. Can the device be powered using the USB front jack and still play audio through the aux port? Or does it have to be plugged into an outlet?
I read it is possible to stream from Google Play Music or Spotify on two Chromecast Audio's at the same time, is it also possible to stream on a normal Chromecast and a Chromecast Audio simultaneously?
Out of curiosity, what happens when the speakers are turned off? Can the Chromecast Audio detect that at all? I'm considering getting a Google home mini, which has no audio jack, and so a Chromecast Audio to hook the mini up to my speakers.
1:38 The feels, I used to do that too with the tape and wires to the floor, but mine was carpet and tape kept lifting up and i kept tripping so i ran them against the wall. (OCD Kicking In (Tangled Wires ))
Tim Schofield (Qbking77) it wasnt mine either till i started to watch desk set up videos and i organized my desk wires and alot of speaker wires that are in my bedroom home theater, then i organized every single wire in the house twitter.com/iTz_Viiper/status/641378158521008132/photo/1
May be a silly questions, but what if you would have multiple routers with multiple wi-fi networks set up throughout your house (I have a super old house with very thick walls :P). If my phone will be jumping to the best network when moving around the house, the audio would stop after it would leave the network both devices were connected to, right?
Once something is playing it grabs the content from the Internet and not your phone so you can leave the house and it will continue playing... Once your phone is on a different network you can no longer use your phone to pause, skip/rewind, and cast next file to play etc
Spotify yes, RUclips yes, phone call audio, no. Even when casting the screen/audio on an Android phone via the Chromecast app, when I make and receive calls, the audio and ringing is not heard through the Chromecast and it's attached speakers/television. This is demonstrated in Google's Chromecast product videos of a lady dancing to music playing from her Chromecast and she receives a call, the music continuing to play uninterrupted as she answers the call. Unlike Bluetooth, the Chromecast isn't continually paired to the mobile device. Once an action is performed in a compatible app such as selecting a video in RUclips or Netflix or selecting a song in Google Music, the content is streamed from the Internet, which is why you could actually turn off the mobile device/put it in airplane mode, and the content is still streamed uninterrupted.
is there any difference in sound quality when you set it to stream all audio from your device rather than from the single app? because the app i would like to use isnt in the supported list
Hey i have a question I am playing a dj set outside in the backyard, hooked up to a speaker. I want the same music to play inside on a speaker. If I got two of these chromecast audios, could I simply connect one of them to the outdoor speaker, the second to the indoor speaker, then they will recognize eachother, then I could transmit inside? What would some requirements be?
Is it possible to mirror complete desktop/laptop audio with this new chromecast ? i know that you can stream chrome tabs ... but could i also stream game music and other local (non browser) stuff ?
Mine was detected in my WiFi settings on my phone, but it said it was out of range for some reason. I had to download the "Google Home" app and then I was able to cast to the Chromecast Audio. So either mine is different, or you failed to mention downloading the app. The only issue I have now is the music isn't as loud as it was when I could cast directly to my A/V unit (which quit working for some reason) I have to turn my A/V Unit up louder than normal to get the same volume as I do for other components. Guess I can live with this, (unless someone has a solution) better than it not working at all.
I have some pc speakers, if I always leave them on, could i connect the Chromecast audio to them, while they still are connected to my pc. They have two aux in ports.
hey I wanted to know if I attached the chromecast audio to my 4 k smart tv, then can I hear the TV's sound only on my bluetooth earphones (which only connects to my phone and my phone can be connected to the smart tv)???
Interesting that RUclips app doesn't even show you a Chromecast logo when you're playing music from Google Play Music. I'm totally getting one for my car because I've got unlimited data and tethering is fine. My BT dongle has been such a pain.
HI, I have a Sherwood rx5502 multichannel stereo amplifier(it has no hdmi input) which is connected to 8 speakers around my home..every time i need to play audio around my home i need to connect my PC to this system using RCA cable and operate..now my question can i connect Chromecast Audio to this amplifier using RCA plug and listen to music on all speakers? please explain..thanks
Since your hooking this up to your receiver you should consider using the optical audio input. It is also in the back of the receiver so it is nicely tucked away.

Don't forget the most important feature, the top looks like a record. great review. I might have to get one of these.
+Travis Shannon haha easily the most important
Thanks Tim, very helpful. Can you also connect it to a basic sound system and the tv, so that the sound of the tv goes through the sound system?
Exactly what I'm trying to find out 😅
I was thinking about getting a bluetooth receiver for my speakers, but if this has better sound quality then I'll get this instead! Works with soundcloud, spotify and youtube which is all I use for media anyways so I think it'd be a good purchase.
best thing to do is connect the chromecast audio via optical and use the on board dacs in your AV receiver, I imagine they will be better quality
Thanks for sharing...
Not sure on usage....it is a unique little gadget

I know you asked this 8 months ago, but yes it is an option now. Create a group and select all devices you'd like added to that group (can include other google home devices as well) and it will cast to all simultaneously.
You are using an av receiver for this test, but the standard chromecast with Hdmi sounds a lot better with av receivers.
hi! awesome video. but can you cast music that you have stored in your Mac to this.
nice use of boxing tape for your cables
I hope they start adding cast support to portable bluetooth speakers now. I know they'd have to add wifi to them as well.
you can also buy the samsung level link and get something similar but via Bluetooth
Can you stream directly from your phone to the chromecast audio without being connected to a home wifi?
I wish they made just one Chromecast which could do both the functions of the normal Chromecast and the new Chromecast audio.....
Yep :(
+Rohit kumar Yeah probably didn't to keep costs down
They could have added a 3.5 mm port to the normal Chromecast.
That would have been an awesome BEAST.
Maybe next iteration.
or at least, that they add a feature to stream video to one and audio to the other at the same time, keeping them synchronous. That would be reaaaaally cool!
+Rohit kumar You could just buy a HDMI to analog converter, and use the regular chromecast for audio purposes...

i thought Tim would have a great cable management but...haha
+Rick Liang Not proud of it...
Is it chargeable or should i plug it with a power source all the time
how did you set up mirroring for your phone to TV? Does it require a Chromecast if your TV is internet capable
Great video! As far as audio quality is concerned, how would you compared it say to a high quality Bluetooth dongle?
I didn't even know this existed! Thanks!
nice comparison with bluetooth. good efficient video. thanks

hi tim..
have you tried to a headphone? i want to make it a wireless headphone
If your AV receiver was turned off, would the CCA turn it on?

Can I use this to watch RUclips and have the audio play over my speakers?
Will it still have audio delay?

Can I rig this to work in the car? I have an aux input for my sound. But I guess I would need a wifi network in the car. Would a phone hotspot work?

What's the best speaker setup to replace sonos
hey can it work with iTunes on my computer, what do i need to make that work or what third party app can I use? thanks for the video as well it was great.
I'm a bit confused how multi room will work. would I have to buy more than one Chromecast audio for each speaker? Each room?
does this only work with cell phones? i was wondering if i can play music from my laptop to speakers with this

Hey Tim, if you press the cast button in the RUclips app, it won't show you your chrome cast audio??!
very good demo and clearly presented!!!!

can i plug it into a headphone port of say a walkman, and send audio to a bluetooth compatible speaker?
hello tim
can I play music from my local library ??
does it have to be google play
Great instructions
man that's a good name for the new chromecast hocks pucks XD
Hi Tim, could you tell me roughly how long it takes to 'boot up' the chromecast audio ( once its all been setup of course )
I have a bathroom audio setup currently running a bluetooth adapter, so when the bathroom light is on it gets power and you can pair to it and stream music to the bathroom, This chromecast audio is what i've been waiting for as it no longer confines you to that space, but one thing i like about the bluetooth adapter is its immediately powered.
i've already ordered a chromecast audio but would appreciate a boot up time, as in how long it takes from switching the wall power on until it shows a cast symbol on your device?
many thanks
does cast screen/audio work on ios? i can't make youtube work from safari since it not a supported app directly listed.
so... can it do 5.1 or only 2.0 given that it only has a jack with 2 channel output?
Oddly enough, you and I have the same receiver so I figured you could test this for me. Can the device be powered using the USB front jack and still play audio through the aux port? Or does it have to be plugged into an outlet?
+Josh Steele Just tested and it works great plugged into the receiver usb slot
+Tim Schofield (Qbking77) Sweet! Thank you.

Out of curiosity, what happens when the speakers are turned off? Can the Chromecast Audio detect that at all? I'm considering getting a Google home mini, which has no audio jack, and so a Chromecast Audio to hook the mini up to my speakers.
No it won't detect if your A/V unit is off or on, it will just play music if it's turned on anyway so what's the purpose of it detecting it being off?
so it can turn it on.....
But it won't turn it on
If it is optical cable it works. my home theater powers up.
This Chromecast doesn't have optical cable in/outs maybe the newer ones do, idk
can you or can you not yet stream to mutiple at the same time?

Will I be able to Bluetooth my Direct T.V. with Google's audio plugged into my Tv?
So does this work like any other Bluetooth dongle when connected to a phone? Will it play Spotify, RUclips, and my phone call audio?
Hey i have a question
I am playing a dj set outside in the backyard, hooked up to a speaker.
I want the same music to play inside on a speaker.
If I got two of these chromecast audios, could I simply connect one of them to the outdoor speaker, the second to the indoor speaker, then they will recognize eachother, then I could transmit inside?
What would some requirements be?
Can this device stream all sound from a windows PC? and if so how? is there software with it?
Does this work if i have a DAC connected to the amplifier and i use an RCA to put it in the amplifier?
Is it possible to mirror complete desktop/laptop audio with this new chromecast ? i know that you can stream chrome tabs ... but could i also stream game music and other local (non browser) stuff ?
I have a Moto X Play and a Yamaha receiver...thinking about Chromecast audio and I'm Tim too :)
Does youtube audio goes to the Chromecast audio?
"so grabing my phone that is allready in settings for the device, and im not telling what app" 🤣
did it work on car stereo
Mine was detected in my WiFi settings on my phone, but it said it was out of range for some reason. I had to download the "Google Home" app and then I was able to cast to the Chromecast Audio. So either mine is different, or you failed to mention downloading the app. The only issue I have now is the music isn't as loud as it was when I could cast directly to my A/V unit (which quit working for some reason) I have to turn my A/V Unit up louder than normal to get the same volume as I do for other components. Guess I can live with this, (unless someone has a solution) better than it not working at all.
GREAT Video... THANK YOU for keeping it simple.
how did you get the Chrome cast audio app on the phone
Just simply get an AUX cable then connect it to your TV's headset 3'5mm jack and connect the other end to your sound system.
Will this work if I use a 3.5mm to 1/4 adapter?
will it work with a mini stereo with an "audio in" input rather than an "aux" input?
if it fits a 3,5mm plug it is actually the same thing, just labelled differently :)
I use my chromecast the same way, just have to plug it into my home theater hdmi port and it plays the sound on the hometheater
that was good to see you and the other side of the chome was good
I have some pc speakers, if I always leave them on, could i connect the Chromecast audio to them, while they still are connected to my pc.
I miss my old Yamaha. I am in an apartment now, I only have a nice mid range SONY 7.1
I am definitely buying one.
@Tim Schofield (Qbking77) It looks like a mini vinyl record from back in the day 👍
wait...did u say it doesn't work with netflix? can it not just broadcast all sound from your mobile device to your designated speakers?
