That swing gear has play on the pivot pin. I have not seen a rebuild kit for these yet. I oil mine up once a year but I'm on the verge of buying 2 valves. Hate these stupid things
The inner gear should not have any play at all ,the mini gear that connected to the motor should turn the half moon bracket and the egr valve rod should open , the motor do not go bad often but could be dirt that cause resistance and that will cause the motor to be weak
I like the design ... Volvo put the EGR valves right above the turbo ! Real bright . . ... that theory must be ' a little more heat should net us a revolving sale of EGR valves !' ( $$$ )
There's normally not that much play between those gear teeth...there are three screws that mount the motor .. Maybe they are loose and are letting your motor teeth back away.....Common cause of egr failure is either a leaking even cooler or motor not strong enough to overcome the sticking plunger....Volvo has since upgraded the voltage, to eliminate some of those issues.
thank you guys for all of your insight & information. Just got a 2007 780 (2006 EPA) D12 with just over a Million miles on the clock. Have run mostly pre-emissions stuff, so this is educational. Have been scouring several videos to learn. How was your experience with the D12 overall? How often should you clean these?
@Roger Rabbit Adventures D12 was solid....very easy to work on, meaning most outer engine parts, alternator, starter, water pump etc, are accessible without tearing down or removing too many other things...Remember if you do an egr delete (DO NOT POST IT ON ANY SOCIAL MEDIA)...
@@deewheels3146 thanks. Plan on keeping everything working. Have seen where some are taken off, cooler etc, then cleaned & reassembled. Read there are upgraded ones to like Bulletproof or Bostech. There's also a hydrogen cleaning process that can be done with everything intact. Did you have any experience with any of this?
@Roger Rabbit Adventures Not any experience with those cleaning processes you mentioned ....Of course I don't have that truck anymore.....I'm in an old school 12.7 detroit series 60 ....Driving it until the wheels fall off!
Did you try just unplugging the egrs by the ECM? Behind the alternator. Was told if you unplug them there at the very main plug when the motor is cold when they are shut that you can run the truck like that. Only downfall you'll have a check engine light on.
Just found out the the soot get into the mini sensor connected to the 3 wires and make dirty which means it won’t send magnetic Sengal to the ecm telling egr is open or close … cleaning that part will resolve the issue .
Don't tell THEM you opened... ? Otherwise they'll rip you off. Like they always do to me and others who are not SMART enough to get at the bottom of the issue. Like you're doing right now.. Put it back together and head to the ropery volvo dealer. And Act like My mother in law. Don't smile shake your head every minute and bang the reception table if you will.. so that you'll be served without any$$

Open those Egrs and ad gear oil in them to keep them lubricated and they will not get corroded inside cause that is one of the reason they get locked.
Check the motor by connecting 2 wire positive and negative see if motor operates open and close

The shaft of the big gear was broken.
