  • Sometimes you need to unwind at the end of a long day, and more and more I find myself booting up my favorite sims, not to race but to just DRIVE. There are hundreds if not thousands of beautifully modeled cars to choose from, and an increasing number of massive locales to test them on. The options truly are endless. So take your favorite fantasy automobile, pick the beautiful vista of your choice, crack a beer if you want to, and enjoy all the beauty of modern simming.

AC doesn't do it for me. It works and is most realistic when pushing the car to the limits, everything else seems worse. Already the first moment in the car when you have to launch from a standstill is disappointing. One of the worst simulations of the clutch biting in any modern sim, and then there are ridiculous torque curves in some cars. I never drove a Giulia QV, but I'm quite sure it doesn't need 3/4 throttle to maintain speed in 3rd gear at 2.5k rpm. BeamNG does these aspects far better.

  • @TheNeedwanted

This is the biggest thing that has kept me glued to AC for so long, having the possibility of choosing any car and any track I want and just having a nice cruise for an hour is something that I cannot recreate in any other sim I own. AC might not have the best ai, but it's still the best "casual" simulator out there.

    • @UncleBoogieRF
      @UncleBoogieRF 3 года назад +9

I have to say as a sim racer all the way back to GPL, AC is the closest we have in modern sims to that. GPL still has the edge of the more obscure historic tracks, but my particular itch is older cars on older tracks (or older looking tracks like Bannochbrae) and AC is the closest I've got to scratching that itch outside GPL. And of course AC offers me WAY WAY WAY more historic cars.

The AI might not be perfect, but I have seen far worse. Though I will say with mods, they do get a bet derpy in some corners (complete stops in heavy traffic).

An acceptable engine that's also friendly for modding is a rarity in itself. Now make it a small genre with an overall small community and on top of that also considering there's an active modding scene that produces quality content and not just reskins/reshades etc. pretty much makes AC an unicorn in gaming.
Every car or racing enthusiast, gamer or not, should be told this is a must buy.

Imagine being in night tokyo, then going up the japanese mountains, then when you go downhill it is morning and gets you to big sur and LA mountains, midday is Nice and Monaco (and these things are configurable). No kidding, look it up!). Anyway, the four-cylinder engine was a carry-over from the 356 that was being replaced by this new family.

I wanted to experience cars i'd never get to try, drive on highways i'd never get to drive on. drive in a certain style id never get to drive in. You're so right - I only discovered AC in March of this year, and at that time, being completely new to any sim racing other than Gran Turismo which I grew up with, I didn't quite understand the concept of DLCs and mods and updates and all that. Some cars just wouldn't work and I'd assume that was all there was to it...but making the necessary financial investment was so worthwhile. I love that, if I've got nothing else to do, I can step aboard a 1923 Delage and saunter around the Nordschleife as it was in 1967. Or perhaps I'll travel to somewhere I've actually been privileged to set foot on - Brooklands, except this time it's exactly the circuit the Bentley Boys, and that foreign Count who was as mad as a hatter, and all the others raced in the '20s and '30s. Then look - I can get into the Napier Railton, the actual Napier Railton, that will forever hold the lap record at that circuit, and see for myself what it's like to drive. I can hire out Matt Neal's Nissan Primera from the 1999 BTCC season, red livery and all, and throw it around Thruxton, my local track and one that's so dear to my heart. The Thruxton. I can stop by at Campbell and Cobb, look left and see the hill me and my dad used to stand on. I know for you the American circuits and cars hold a special beauty too. To me, this game never becomes just normal, it never ceases to be amazing, and my god, is it relaxing when you're in the zone. Watching your videos helps, too. 🙂

This is something I liked about Test Drive Unlimited.
You got 2 islands, Ibiza and Hawaii, and can drive all around them.
The Crew offers a similar experience but for driving around the USA.

I started just driving instead of racing or hotlapping in pc2 with the azure coast road and California highway, I loved taking some slow old road car like the BMW 2002 and drive it around as if it were my car and I was really there. So driving more relaxed and laid back, being more cautious and gentle. I thought that side of thing was super cool. The massive mod maps for AC are awesome for this.

I’ve been doing this for years with Gran Turismo, Forza, and now AC. I do Motor Trend/Top Gear type drives in some of the greatest cars at some of the best locations in the world. (In the world to be read in Jeremy Clarkson’s voice). It’s very calming.

There is a market for a sim driving game; with traffic, massive free roam and easy multiplayer setup. Something about just cruising in a vibrant, alive world just hits a spot. I've never tried Horizon but I imagine something like that but with sim level mechanics would really do well. For now, AC with maps like LAC and traffic mods is all we really have. Sometimes I'll load up GTA V with a wheel support mod and handling mod and that can be fun too - but it doesn't match AC's driving feel / FFB.

My favorite feature of AC is the track day feature. I like driving around a circuit, but it gets a little dull when it's just me, so I like having some cars strolling too. I put some slower ones for easy overtakes and some faster ones so I can challenge myself a bit and try to keep up with them, but without the pressure of actually being in a race.

Ive done this with other racing games, just taken a car around a scenic area or track, and just drove, let my mind kind of drift as I went on autopilot, taking in the scenes and admiring the tracks and surrounding area one doesnt notice when racing. Assetto is next on my list

Nr2003 Langley pst is fun because they accurately detailed the outside of the track with the buildings and even a few trailers.
I lived in one of those in real life back in the late 90s and it's so surreal to be able to revisit in the best stock car oval sim ever with fairly accurate for a small mod tean

Quite often I'll pop on an album and listen to it while free roaming in AC. A lovely time to be sure. Though if I'm being honest I've spent most of my time on the Feldbergring racing GT3s, but being able to cruise around in a Porsche 912 and race thirty ultra-modern GT cars on the same circuit is surely the mark of an all time great.

Great video, thanks. I think this is exactly what AC is built for.
Used it a lot myself for free rides right since 2014. What better sim engine than AC for a free ride of e.g. the Ferrari Testarossa TR512 mod in a decent rig and at a free ride track mod? But ofcourse, decent competition do well, both offline and serious online lobbies.

I have ADHD and stress issues and honestly, just getting into a virtual car and hurling it around a track is the only thing that helps a lot of the time.
Bannochbrae is my current track obsession. Hurling cars around that. I love track day type stuff. Multiplayer competition stresses me out and I don't enjoy it anymore. But just driving around with other folk, not trying to race or anything, is heaven.

Yeah, that's what you need to unwind after a fierce session of hot-lapping - a cruise along the Feldbergring. And driving what seems like the 1960's equivalent of a Boxster seems to be the right choice of motor.
