At 6 km from the finish, Van der Poel was 1 minute behind the leaders, that is almost 1 km. And then winning like this. How did he do that?? What a hero.
The time gaps were pretty dodgy all day. I doubt VdP and company were actually a minute behind with 2k to go...because all of the groups were not steadily progressing. Alaphilippe and Fulgsang basically went too slow and let the chasing groups catch up.
I was going to comment the same thing. Matt was just at a complete loss for words, laugh-crying and even clapping in the booth. I can't hear his reaction and not grin like crazy every time. What a finish, and I'm so glad I actually saw it live on TV. :) Great commentary from Rob, too, of course: he kept it together really well during such a moment and amped it up just perfectly.

I missed the last 2 km of the live session on the internet/TV. A few hours later I read the results and I was very surprised. After that I saw the videos on the internet and I was even more surprise. It's unbelievable how MvdP managed to win. Great result for him. And well deserved. But not very clever done by Alaphilippe and Fuglsang. They made a big mistake which they will not forget anymore till the end of their lives.
Fuglsang got a report from Astana's team car that the group behind is far enough that's why they already played cat and mouse. The Camera did not saw how Van der Poel dragged all the other riders, with that the team cars does not have any clue that the time gap have diminished that fast.
@@savievankint At 2km they had 34 seconds on Kwiatkovski and 50 seconds on group MvdP. The differences were pretty steady untill then. In the next 100 meters they lost 4 seconds to both Kwiatkovski and Mathieu! He might not have won, but mad respect to Fuglsang. So many guys would have been happy to tow Alaphilippe up to the line and settle for second. But he took a risk, refused to settle for second, and actually managed to outsprint Alaphilippe in the end.
