I watched this at my aunt's birthday party, they always have cycling on in the background during their birthdays as any sunday in april is usually something big on the calendar, and my uncle's birthday is during the Tour de France. Usually, it's just 'there' and all of us casual cycling fans glance at the scree every now and then, but this race was completely different. It was the only time I can remember where we were are glued to the screen all the way until the end.

At the time I thought it was the best bike race final I had ever seen and that hasn't changed. The total confusion towards the end for all those who rode and watched the race contributed to the most amazing finish. It was also the first time we could enjoy the different strategy of a new generation of world class road cyclists - MvdP, WvA and the Pog - who are not afraid to just go for it without being too concerned with conserving energy for the final few kms.

Same here, since 1980 or so. It was rare in 2019. But in 2023 we have seen especially MvdP do things that are pretty rare in cycling history. 2021 Tirreno....the attack with some food in has hand just went from pole position of that group and they just could never catch him. Ronde van Vlaanderen too. This years Milan San Remo taking on a group of three which are all considered worlds best time trialists and they can not get even a second back on him in stead losing time.

Many riders from many teams, have had the "go for it" mindset. And it has made cycling INCREDIBLY interesting to watch..... I cannot tell you how much I love watching the drama it creates. WVA, MVDP, POG, JONAS, there was that rider from Cirrus, who didn't quite make it but it was a hell of a finish, drama till the end, and you know everyone was rooting for him, it's been amazing. Is it the best strategy, no probably not, you will fail, and fail often. But you will be remembered when it creates the drama. But you will create a moment in history to remember. No you may not win, but everyone will remember how amazing YOU made that race, and you WILL turn heads your way. Because you WILL win it, at some point. You will play your cards right eventually.
