  • In this video, lastadventurer travels to an interstate hub town - the infamous Breezewood, Pennsylvania - and explores one of the abandoned Pennsylvania turnpike tunnels, known as Ray’s hill. This is just one of three tunnels along the aforementioned abandoned stretch of road, with the other two being known as Laurel Hill and Sideling Hill tunnels. Interestingly, Laurel Hill tunnel was bought by a racer and converted into a race car testing facility.
In the first part of the video, we venture along the old road which is reminiscent of the famed and late graffiti highway of Centralia, PA. As we get closer to the tunnel, we first take to the very top, where the tunnel’s old fan was housed. We explore an increasingly short maintenance corridor and then we return back down to ground level.
Once we are back on the ground, we enter Ray's Hill, and begin uncovering it in all of its decaying beauty. As we walk through its 3500 feet, we are presented with various works of art - some being actual art and others just names and such. We even encounter the echoes of another explorer singing!
We wrap things up with a brief message from lastadventurer about following your passions and not being too hard on yourself - whether its your creations or just in general. We are all human.

Once upon a time, there were:
    Laurel Mountain
    Allegheny Mountain
    Ray's Hill
    Sideling Hill
    Blue Mountain
    Tuscarora Mountain
    Kittatinny Mountain.
When I was a kid all of the tunnels were single holes, based on the original railroad tunnels, but by the mid-1960s it became obvious that the tunnels were a major jam up.
The Turnpike looked at the cost and decided to build bypass roads around the Laurel Mountain, Ray's Hill, and Sideling Hill tunnels. They considered removing the cover above the Allegheny Mountain tunnels but environmental concerns scotched that idea. They settled for straightening the eastern approach to the tunnel, eliminating a source of many truck rollover accidents.

Wow, that’s super interesting! It must be really cool to have that perspective, having seen them when they were just single holes.
      Thanks for sharing!

@@lastadventurer It's all history, lost history. Experiencing the Pennsylvania Turnpike as a kid, from the back of a station wagon, was terrifying. Once you negotiated the queue to get into the tunnels, they were dark, noisy, and filled with diesel smoke and fumes. Everyone was flying past mere inches away, and the inevitable crashes were often fatal. Coming home from Virginia Beach meant surviving the Allegheny Mountain and Laurel Mountain tunnels. Once we exited Laurel Mountain you could exhale and think about home. The Irwin exit was an hour away.
There is a story about how the abandoned Laurel Mountain tunnel was used to secretly test NASCAR cars.
