- This is a guide on how to fit the Himalayan Tools HT-b performance camshaft (or any camshaft) to the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Includes tips on how to retrieve the cam chain if you accidently drop it into the timing case. Please note; the locking plate for the camshaft bolts was put in the wrong way in this video. It has to go on the opposite side to retain the dowel. I corrected it, but forgot to film that part!

Nicely done video. I would suggest you double check the cam gear retaining plate though. I’m fairly certain it was installed incorrectly. I believe it should cover the dowel pin in the camshaft when fitted. That way it prevents the pin from walking out into the cylinder head.
Well spotted! I actually sorted this out before I put it back together, and forgot to edit the video to include a note about this.

Did the camshaft bring you the right (and more) power ?
Thanks for your kind words. Although I have spent many thousands of hours modifying vehicles, I'm still a rookie when it comes to content creation! I'll certainly take your suggestion on board for my next major mod; the forged piston 477 big bore kit from Himalayan Tools. To answer your question about the cam; I am very happy with the increase in mid-range torque. Coupled with the Red Box ECU, my bike is now a lot more responsive.

I fitted a Hitchcock's cam, great upgrade, g/b sprocket I fitted an 18 tooth item replacing the original 16 tooth item. The dowel came out some easily I felt it was not needed and could come loose. After over 4000km since the upgrade, I would definitely say it is worth doing. A good video well done.
Yeah, I'm not convinced the dowel is necessary. As long as the bolts are tight, it shouldn't matter.

Thanks for this very helpful video. Can I ask why you went with the HP tools cam over the Tec or the Hitchcocks?
You do not mention any run in period, surely you took it easy at first. I know you coated the new cam with grease, personally I pumped oil into all the oil ways while rotating the cam when tightening the cam sprocket bolts. 2~300 miles would bed in a new cam.
It doesn't actually take that long to run in a cam. 20 minutes varying rpm between 2500 - 3000rpm is sufficient.
dont understand why you took off the side cover. seems you can see timing mark through standard plug
I dropped the timing chain, and couldn't hook it back up. I included it in the video, so that people could see what to do if they did the same thing.

@@wollongongbiker well... it did. I think. Did it yesterday but I’m in the middle of no where in France so didn’t have a small sub 20nm torque wrench. So I had to use my large one and dial it lower than 20. I think it worked fine for most of the bolts but some I couldn’t reach and did them by hand. I think one 10mm bolt on the top I sheared. I felt it go slightly slack. Stopped immediately and just buy some lock tote around the head. Hoping that rocker cover won’t have to come off again for a long long time.
Will test today or tomorrow once the sealant has cured.
If you ever have to remove the cover again, put in some thread inserts. They are M6, and you can buy kits off eBay.
@@wollongongbiker yeah fair point. I have a Helicoil kit. That said it might be hard to get the broken bolt out. We’ll see if I ever have to have the cover off again.

What difference did you notice in the ride off pavement and on freeways after installing this cam?
It is now far more responsive, both on and off road. Midrange torque is significantly improved, as is the motor's willingness to rev. I have no issues maintaining freeway speeds.

@@thefastelephant94 I got mine up to 135kph last time I rode it. I'm also running a 16T front sprocket.
Does this cam install require a ecu tune?
No, but you won't see the full benefit without a Powertronic or similar piggyback ECU. The Himalayan really benefits from some timing advance, even with the stock cam. With the HT-b, it's even more beneficial to map the timing properly.
