I disagree with your comment about "copying other artist". I am a beginner painter with acrylics and I have learned so much from other artist teaching videos. As it is important to be creative, it is also important to learn proper brush stroke techniques and proper materials. I think it is a process and eventually I will develop my own style, but for now I will copy other artists with their consent. Thank you for your videos.
Yeah I agree with you, but that video was about creativity not about how to learn painting. And by copying you might learn the techniques, but you are not creative.
Sorry but read the title of the video again... It's not supposed to be a tutorial. She has loads of videos that are not tutorials. And that is totally fine as this is her channel and she can do whatever she wants. Also I think getting to the right mind set as an artist is just as important as improving your skills. And no, I totally disagree. You're not an artist if you copy someone. You train your skills, but not your creativity.
Wow thanks for all your comments! 😊 I didn’t mean any offence and I was only joking about the ‘stalking’ (British humour 😄). Using other artist work as ideas and learning ‘how’ to paint is incredibly important. However this video is talking about creativity. As a definition, creativity is using your imagination. Therefore copying isn’t necessarily creative. There is nothing wrong with following tutorials to refine your painting skills, of course I’ve created some. But at some point I would always encourage to create your own ideas because of your wonderful brains! 😍✨💕 I only want to encourage, not make anyone feel bad, so I apologise if this was the effect. 😘
to copy beloved works from artists can be very helpfull to learn on basics, it can be very helpful to feel during the copyprocess: is this style is my way or less my way etc., later on the beginning artist can bring their own style in it and go more and more their own way ...
Ms. Katie, your videos are uniquely YOUR own and you should never feel pressured or "criticized" to make them feel more appealing to others as opposed to how you want to represent and project YOUR passions and your art! Make videos based on what Katie wants to do and share to inspire and nothing else. Teach on things that you feel comfortable about, inspire those that need uplifting videos like this, and keep on growing and learning to even mold and shape yourself into the kind of artist that you want to be. Your channel is just that: YOUR CHANNEL! Don't you compromise for anyone what to share with us. Stay natural, stay organic, stay you! Love you, Katie!♥
Thank you so much 😀😍🌸You have no idea how much I needed to hear this right now! Thank you times a billion! I feel like my channel is slightly changing direction, but it feels good. And I always want to make videos I feel passionate about, otherwise I will stop enjoying it. Also if I'm passionate about them, hopefully that means they will be better. Thank you again!🌸I have so much cool stuff planned for this channel x
I just had to speak the truth to ya, Ms. Katie! I saw the comments and no one has the right to come on your platform and tell you what THEY want to see from you in order to stay subscribed to you. If they don't like it, then they need to be producing the kind of content that they are whining about! It's that simple! People don't have to agree with any of the tips you've shared here because at the end of the day, they can choose what works for them to become artists. But, Katie is still going to be Katie and she will continue to do what God has called her to do!
I like how you mentioned to shop looking at artists we admire on Instagram so much. I feel like I waste a good amount of time looking at others' work instead of just creating. Thanks for sharing! :)
Katie I think artist are inspired by other artist from forever nothing is from scratch everywhere there's influence from ideas and inspiration like your channel and people learn that way and develop into their own everything is borrowed for learning and development happens and evolves into other things just a thought lov your work thank you xx
This is such a great short video that you! I am currently stuck in a rust of trying to impress others with my art, feeling though if not enough people are liking my paintings maybe im doing the wrong thing, you've helped remind me that art is such a personal thing to do it for yourself not necessarily to please others!
Lately, I've been feeling I'm failing at some abstract techniques I'm trying to learn so I stopped painting for a bit due to frustration of the process not working the same way for me. I really want to get better and find my voice as an artist as that's all I think about. So I came back to one of your videos because you actually got the fire in me to start painting (I did the beach wave painting). I'm working on the clouds part of another beach scene you did a video on but had some trouble with the clouds so coming at it on a fresh day. You hit all the points I've been feeling so I really need to get off Instagram for a bit and just paint anything at this point. I would really love for you to make a video on some of the abstract paintings like you were doing in this video, love the colors you started with. It's really great to understand the tools used and why, if you are using water vs medium and the techniques you use for blending, certain strokes, or layering. I love watching you, you make it look so easy! Thanks for these videos.
Hi Katie, I've been following you for a while but haven't had a chance to really get watching your videos, and then last night I was pulling an all-nighter (had a painting deadline) and I binged your videos! So glad I did because your videos are wonderful! You're wonderful! Have a happy day! Amy (South Africa)
Thank you Katy. This video is inspiring and generous! And the portrait and sunset are particularly beautiful! Painting with coffee?! Great idea, there is always a cold cup of coffee around! As a newer artist, there is one aspect I disagree with. I have copied several Van Gogh's, with The Starry Night being my favorite, and I even teach that in a 2 hour class. For newer artists, copying can teach brush work, how to use paint, and many other techniques that will start beginners or newer painters on their way with a little guidance. Yes, later, after those skills are acquired, it IS important to create our own work, just as you say. Thank you again! Lauren, Arty Party of Westchester
hi awesome video but I have a question do you think its bad to look at a reference like for example maybe I have an idea that has an eagle somewhere in the background would I be wrong for looking at eagle pictures??
Thank you Katie, those are good ideas to let our freedom to come out. Sometimes we feel like in a cage.. and in this case it's important to have fun first to unlock our creativity. Congratulations for your channel and your art, i like both! Bye bye, best regards
To improve your art, look at lots of painting tutorials one, or few every week that is whenever you feel like watching them. Then pick one or two tips from different videos and you will get a collection of the best tips, then when you paint you will recall different tips and different styles and you will develop your own unique style. If you want to paint a roses, look at different artist painting before you start, same for anything you want to paint, the most imp thing is to watch regularly
Absolutely wonderful Katie! omg~~ I have been creating and haven't looked at videos for awhile... You have evolved and developed uniquely and absolutely gorgeously! I am excited and delighted to watch all your new passionate creations. Thank you immensely! You barely had any subscribers when you first inspired me and look at you now! way to go Chica.... congratulations! Expressing your talent, passion, creativity whilst seemingly authentically being YOU... clearly is appreciated by oooodles of other creative artys like me. 🦋🌈🦄🌵🌺
this was really helpful! working on big canvases helps me a lot too! in the past I only painted on small sheets of paper. since I started working on big canvases I'm having so much more fun with painting! and I think a lot of us compare ourselves to other artists way too much. I have realized this only recently but I did that a lot and I never really did what I enjoyed and what I wanted to do because I felt pressured to be like the other artists. so now I am finally starting to paint what I enjoy :) I loved the paintings that you showed in the video! especially the flowers! you choose such beautiful colours! I also loved your edit! I hope I can make good videos too in the future! :)
Thank you so much, I had to see this , I’m so stuck and flat creatively and it upsets me, had a negative experience end of last year concerning my work and usually it does not effect me, because to paint is to breathe, but something just happened and I cannot get back into really creating
Dead right mak8ng ones own work more satisfying I have copied monet and picasso but very difficult did give me boost but not the way.Finding ones own inspiration very satisfying. L8ke 5he abstract large canvas approach with blank canvas and starting a story fabulous
So many good points! 💞 I love how you talked about looking like an artist. I love finding inspiration and connections through the beautiful world around!!! Sounds cheesy but so true lol
They say if you copy a Rembrandt, you finish an art school. Copying until you learn the right techniques is important. I have always copied different type of works just to learn the basics, I have been painting for 1 year, now I finally feel confident that I can go on my own, start creating my own work. You are amazing though :) cheers :)
I totally agree! Painting techniques and creativity are two very different things 😄🙌🏻✨ one is knowledge, the other is inspiration based and creating something new. This video is focusing on creativity. Hope this explains 😊👍🏻
Copying other artwork is a bit of a plus though in the sense that you can learn how to do multiple techniques. When I was first starting out I copied a few sculptures and it helped me practice eyes, noses, mouths, etc. to know where to begin and what I want my final outcome to be. NEVER claim these works as originals and always be very clear with anyone who asks or sees if that that's what you did. When you post online, credit the original artist. But don't be afraid to use other works as a sort of guide to learn. Then you can be confidently original.
i hope you dont take this negatively dear katie. i love your videos and get excited everytime a new one is up. but i can only speak for myself as i dont know what other people look forward to seeing and learning from your content.. i was hoping to learn more about the actual process of art..learn techniques, process etc.. actual doing work as opposed to 3 mins of a inspirational pep talk..this pep talk sure makes me as an individual feel great and inspired and teaches me nothing about the techniques of art or materials used or anything really to actually improve my work.. i hope i wasn't critical..i just wanted to give some feedback. much love..nd thanks for ur efforts with these videos ❤
Thanks so much for your feedback. It's really great to hear what you want to see. I have only been painting a few years and am still a novice myself compared to the artists that have been painting 30+ years. Therefore I wouldn't want to put out any wrong information. I disagree on the point of "not copying someone else's work". I love getting all my art supplies out and organize... but then I look at the paper and I feel scared, overwhelmed and unfulfilled. I wish I could at least color out those emotions but nope. I end up just staring at the blinding, white void that is my paper for about 20 minutes. Then I calmly put everything away.
Im not born with this kind of talent, but i really dream to paint like this. So i wonder is it possible? I tried few things but does seems to help much. Maybe i don't know where to start?
Have a SketchBook and scribble Scrabble different scribble Scrabble everyday. Get paint Ambush it around over top of your scribbles and just push it all over, you too can be a great artist.

I agree with you. Whether it's from an art teacher, a book or artists we love, we all have to copy to learn.
Yeah I agree with you, but that video was about creativity not about how to learn painting. And by copying you might learn the techniques, but you are not creative.

Haha! I only know because I do the same thing 😂😄
Chill out Debbie Rodas. No one is "stalking" you. Be positive and a blessing to others and encouraging. Stop making underhanded accusations. Peace.
Ha! That’s what I do!
Lmao, as we're all procrastinating by watching this video 😂
Good tips though, I'll have to get to that just as soon as I watch 30 more scenes. 💀
