The recent reissue of Frank Ocean's 2016 video album Endless reveals the music to be every bit as fulfilling as its follow-up, Blonde.

Frank dropped this ‘album’ to get out of his deal with Def Jam and collect all revenue for Blonde. I thought everyone knew this smh melon

Still even as a throwaway album it's like rly good
nothing Frank does is a throwaway

@@jaredtowery8527 well made album but released like a throwaway.

Umm what? Bro the only like really good song on this album is At your best, the rest are so incomplete. To me the whole rest of the album was just random music strung together. I’m not saying I didn’t like it, but unless u have listened to like 10 songs ur entire life it shouldn’t be incredible to u. Of course this is just my opinion though and while the comment may have sounded a little confrontation I didn’t mean it that way, respect to ur opinion

I really feel like endless would become super popular if it was released regularly. It’s not unknown by any means, but it gets disregarded as a “throwaway” album all too often. Definitely my favorite Frank project

Endless was supposed to be the album that fulfilled his record deal, and Blonde was the album that he made so that he could release it solo. From what I understood, a lot of people that worked on the albums with Frank said there were over 50 songs that he recorded. I just assumed that Endless isn't supposed to be bad/overlooked, but it's supposed to be the b-sides that came before the album.
the music on Endless is more recent than the music on Blonde so I would disagree
Wes ....how it it more recent? He released Endless the day before Blonde came out
Jake Cabreza i know that, but all the material was released officially when it was released officially. Thats why I initially said that it was like the b-sides before the album even happened. And again, there is a lot more material besides Blonde and Endless that isn't out that he was working on at the same time that was supposed to be a part of both albums. Regardless of when he started making specific songs, Endless still came out before Blonde chronologically. This even gives more weight to my point that he made Endless to fulfill the record deal and then release Blonde as his own album.
Jake Cabreza oh yeah we're on the same page there lol
Endless is definitely its own experience. All the sounds are rly coherent and it works as a raw stream of consciousness kinda album. 1000% not b-sides imo
Rushes is one of the most beautiful song I've ever heard
You gotta admire Frank Ocean for the obvious amount of passion he puts into his art form. You can think he’s pretentious if you want but it’s not true in the slightest. He takes inspiration from some of the greatest artists in many different mediums, and he takes time to perfect the music he creates.
"Endless" was a released to get out of his deal with Def Jam, as he was still contracted for one more album. The stair case in the video symbolises him climbing out of that. Then when he released blonde (the next day), we was independent. $$$$
Dushane P the stair metaphor was wrong but yeah ur right
n the fact the album still good too. goated
How did he get money from Blonde if he was independent? Not sure how that works yet.
@@childofflog5829 essentially because he was independent he got to keep 100% of the profit lmao, man finessed his record label cuz if he dropped it through them they'd def be collecting at LEAST like 60% on top of probably owning his masters for a bit...he the goat fr
Yeah this is wrong. Tom Sachs (a close friend of Frank's and who's speakers can be seen in the background) commented on the significance of the staircase. "You see each stair being stacked on top of each other onto a central steel column that’s welded and bolted to the ground. So there’s a transparency to the building that is the same as the transparency in the music. The spiral staircase is also an endless column-a reference to Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi's work." Tom Sachs also taught Frank how to build the staircase. So this might be *your* interpretation, but to say it so matter-of-factly is just plain wrong.

Hello Anthony this is a message from your son you abandoned 18 years ago, please come back dad I’m scared without a melon by my side :(
Apparently the reason Frank Ocean released Endless was to free him out of his recording contract with Island Def Jam. He had to fullfil his two album deal, and def jam was giving him hell, so he pulled a fast one on them by releasing endless under them and blonde independently.
easily my favorite album atmosphere of the past decade
Glad you revisited the album! Its cool that you didn't include it in favourite tracks but I gotta say I LOVE Rushes, the build up to the end and then his broken "I love the way you make me feel," amazing!
IMO Endless emotionally peaks at Rushes and it's really powerful too
i think the reason people dont get this album and songs like rushes is bc there arent hooks like there are on blonde. it just takes longer to get into songs like Rushes, Higgs, Wither etc. at least it did for me.

I wish more people talked about endless the way they do blonde. Endless is my favorite frank album, and I think his best.
Ocean created and released Endless under Def Jam records which fulfilled his contract with them. He did this because he wanted to release Blonde under his own new record label Boys Don't Cry. Overnight he was free of his record label releasing a competent album and had jumpstarted his brand new record label with an amazing album. 🙌
turn that no review upside down that's an 8 now
This was my first fanto video and the review that made me a fan of channel. Such a good review.
So glad you did this. I also overlooked Endless at first but upon returning found it to be incredible.
MELON IS FINALLY COMING AROUND. PROUD OF YOU
The reason that Endless was dropped so close to Blonde was because Frank still had a contract for another album with Def Jam, but wanted to release Blonde independently. Endless was his way out of a contract, I think in a brilliant way, that only attracted more attention for Blonde, which is now fully owned by him.
endless makes my heart tingle

your descriptions on this review are a 10/10. nice job, melon.
It’s crazy frank pulled this off. Of endless ended up being better than blonde that would’ve been so embarrassing because endless is truly one of the greatest r&b albums of all time as well I don’t wanna hear anybody say it isnt
Endless is one of the greatest projects of all time and is the most innovative but simultaneously somewhat accessible if you understand various genres of music. Classic futuristic art, endless is a God of music.
After always listening to blonde and not endless till now, it feels like he dropped a new album and I love it
i bought this the other day and arrived today, came just in time!
Haha he said Meloncholy
DAMN. + 1 /10
I never knew how to describe the feeling I had toward Endless but this explains it pretty much. It’s still my favorite project of Frank Ocean, second being Blond.
I used to keep this CD in my car on loop, so yeah, I agree you could keep it on loop and jump back in at anytime
I think someone said it on reddit but, while Endless was a record to get out of that contract, it gave him the breadth to be more experimental. The sounds are definitely less radio friendly and lyrically it's a lot more dense and poetic. I personally love how it showcases the beautiful and raw quality of his voice and the uncanny way he can carry emotion. While Blond was easily more polished, Endless was just a totally different project and I don't think it can be compared directly to Blond, or dismissed as a record of throwaways.
this album has and always will be a 10 for me
He released Endless to get out of his record deal. Once that was out, he could put out Blonde. He wanted to reap his rewards finally in full for his music, so he released Endless, a music video album on the major label (much less heard and easily monetized btw), and then Blonde.
Beautiful review. Great job, anthony
Frank Ocean scored 7/8/8 on all his studio albums.
6 months ago, Fantano even admitted he got the Channel Orange Review (7) wrong and that the album and songs have grown on him. Don’t think any other artist has been able to score that high consistently. That’s basically three 8s

As pure as music making could get. Reminded me of Arthur Russell and Bon Ivers "22, A Million".

yeah. I also think Endless is more focused on a sonically consistent sound. gr8 score hehe
From what I've read, Endless was released as Frank's last album on Def Jam before he'd fulfilled his recording contract with them (a contract he was keen to get out of apparently). Blonde, meanwhile, is on Frank's own label "Boys Don't Cry" - which would explain the decision to release one immediately after the other.
EDIT: They're both fucking amazing in their own ways - thanks for coming back to Endless, I feel it sadly gets overlooked in Frank's brief but brilliant discography

Endless is finally getting the recognition it deserves!
He released endless Bc he had to make two albums for his record label. Channel orange was the first, then he wanted to release blond but wanted it on his own label so he released endless as kind of a throwaway to fulfill his contract then released the better album on his own record label. Pretty genius not even a melon could think of it
When u gonna change those backdrop albums, melon?
it’s ok anthony you can say it’s better than blonde
I've read time ago that he released Endless as a way to get out of his record label as he supposedly had 1 more album left in the contract but didn't want Blond to be affected by label influence
Endless was the album Ocean made to fulfill his Def Jam contract, initially the Endless video album was what fans thought was his sophomore LP. Blonde was released one day after Endless, totally unexpected, under Frank's own label Boys Don't Cry. Blonde is the more personal, indepth album in which Ocean really tries get back to his past, but it also borrows a lot of elements from 60's pop rock, like the Beach Boys, the Beatles and maybe even Love.
