I’ve only been to the SS in Greenwich CT, i went in wearing dirty work clothes and they treated me pretty well. I loved it, I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but they knew exactly what to pick for me. And they altered the pants for free. So it was a pretty good experience

It all depends on the salesperson you get. My guy didn't care at all, didn't know how to measure.I ended up with pants I couldn't even squeeze into and a dress shirt larger than my jacket. Best of all, he accidentally duplicated the order then demanded I send one back to be destroyed. I did him one better and sent it all back.

Bought my first SuitSupply suite in 2011 at their Broome Street location. What you have said on this review is on the spot. Pretentious associates and non-fitting pants are the ones I can relate to. Stopped going there a few years ago when I can't stand the associates anymore. Thank you for speaking the truth.

Completely agree with you on the showroom experience. I exchanged emails with their head of retail about it, but I don't think they have made any changes. I shop in the Madison Avenue store quite a bit and the staff has the terrible habit of dumping you in a changing room then going off to help other people for 30 mins. They could do so much better with some retail / client services training.

@@hespokestyle I notice that both you and 40 Over Fashion both say you have issues with the trousers of suit supply. As a tailor I would be interested to know more about why the fit is not quite right, could you go into more detail, maybe a picture or two. Of course, if you have time in your busy schedule.

    • @arjenvanduijvenbode
      @arjenvanduijvenbode 5 лет назад +1

Tom Bennett I believe the issues with the trousers is due to the Italian type of fit. People generally are wearing their jeans/pants lower so I would advice lowering the waiste line 2 cm lower. So the trousers have a better feel around your bottom. I have done this for all of my Italian suits.

It’s actually crazy how accurate this video is. I went into suit supply thinking I’d spend about $500. When all was said and done, I ended up spending about $1000. I like the suit and the fabric but I couldn’t get the pants to fit me nicely. Even here in Canada, the showroom experience is still poor. The person that helped me felt pretentious and when we finally decided on a suit they didn’t have in store, she ordered the wrong size for me online and I had to return it a couple of times because I didn’t remember my size. Like you said thought, the return process was very pleasant and the customer service reps were very nice.

My experience in Canada was the complete opposite. Went several times and every time was amazing (the store was always so empty). Only had trousers hemmed and opened (trousers was much too small for me and they didn't do mix and match, that is a bummer I admit). I was asked if I wanted the trousers tapered but decided not to do it until I was sure of what I wanted, the sales man agreed never pushed it on me.

Brian you are on point. Especially regarding the stylist. I have one suit supply suit. It cost 699.00. After the alterations including the extreme tapered leg, it became my last. I wear suits every day for work, and have for 25 years. I went into the Philly store, and the stylist put me in a suit that was a slim cut, several sizes larger than my norm... after the alterations, it came to several hundred more. And it still never fit right. This after I told him I don’t do slim cut.. he ignored me and that’s what I ended up with.... I guess he knew better than I did.
My next suit I ended up at indochino, and have purchased numerous suits with no problem...

I've had a positive experience at suit supply in Newport Beach, California.
The people there were really nice and friendly. Throughout the process, they weren't trying to sell me on things that I didn't need; which made me feel comfortable. Never did I feel rushed or talked down to. If you live by a suit supply, I really recommend going through their custom program. I think the suit will end up fitting you better and also you could alter the suit as much as you would like and never have to worry about the cost of alterations piling up. Another plus is that any future alterations are taken care of. I feel like the fit is predicated towards men that are on the slim and athletic side. If you are not into the fitted look then this may not be for you. In regards to the pants, they are on the tighter side so that is just something to be aware of. The fabric and construction of their garments are on point. Overall, I think you are getting a pretty good value for what you are paying. Just my two cents. Thank you for the video.

There were almost just Dutch people working there and the service was great which for me as a 20-year-old usually is the opposite since people often don't consider me as somebody who knows anything about suits or as a buyer because of my age. First of your videos that I’ve watched, and I have to say you are absolutely spot on with your observations. Great product at a very good price. You can achieve a young Bruno Cucinelli look at a fraction of the price. But the showroom experience is indeed terrible, after all it’s just a shop. The appointment system in London is ridiculous, it is just a shop after all. You don’t need an appointment to shop in Gieves and Hawkes across the road.
I’ve bought amazing T shirts which in my mind can’t be beaten for the price, suits and recently a summer safari jacket which with good jeans and Gucci loafers looks great.

I ended up finding my size in store and ordering everything online because I simply didn't like the experience in store. They didn't talk down to me, but they definitely weren't listening to what I said I was looking for. They kept showing me extra slim fit, and super tapered pants. Way too uncomfortable for what I want. They do have great fabrics in the price point though, and I ended up with quite a few new linen shirts.

It takes some time to get measurements perfect but they do offer $125 in alterations my fist alteration was $150 and they still gave me the extra $25 even though they didn’t have to. OW also is “custom” picking lapels and side tabs among other things. To me it’s a no brainer OW has all the same fabrics and is right in the middle price range 499-699ish.

I have to agree with most of your comments especially the fit recs. Fortunately for me, the pants fit just fine and have never had the issues you mention. Additionally, my showroom experience has been hit or miss..I was treated wonderfully well in SF and Dallas, while your comment about the staff being pretentious and aloof resonated all too well in both the NYC stores. All in all, I think they make great suits at that price point and I usually get them altered with my regular tailor
Have you had any experience with Knot Standard? I accidentally wandered into their store and was blown away by the experience...considering getting a custom blazer from them

Hey Brian, I myself own about 6 suits from SS. I couldn’t agree with you more about most of the pros (except I don’t like some of the styling they do), but ALL the cons. I like a pretty classic look when it comes to buying suits. I can’t stand when they egg me on that I should hem the pants to the ankle or higher, and taper the leg (almost to a skinny fit), and even worse I have given in a couple of times when they told me I should get a size I felt was a bit too tight on me. I regret it so much, as I have already outgrown a couple of them. Most of all, the showroom experience... I am glad I am not the only one who thought that most workers there come across super pretentious. When I ask a question or try to get their attention, it seems that I am a bother/they are looking down on me. Glad you posted this! Thanks for a great review.

Interesting. I went to that same Vigo Street store and had a good experience. Like you said in the video the salesman did make a suggestion to taper the trousers, but also said that it wasn't really necessary and other than hemming the trousers the suit fit nicely and I didn't need any extra alterations.

Great review! Suit Supply has the best quality for money in suits for sure. Amazing materials and great fit (for me). But I agree about showroom experience. I drove from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA to get the in-person experience before buying. Fit recommendations were actually really helpful, and they helped me choose a 36 over a 38. I wanted a three-piece navy Lazio, and for some reason one of the sales reps insisted that "any navy vest will match" the off-the-rack 2 piece navy Lazio I could buy in store. When I declined, he looked at me like I was being stubborn for refusing to entertain this option. I had done my research and I knew they sold various shades of navy with different grades of wool. I knew the different mills they used, the model numbers, the basic wool vs. super 100s vs. super 120s, etc. Anyways, I got the fit right by going to the showroom, but I had to purchase online to build my fully matching 3-piece, and had to actively decline the offer of a sales rep to buy a 2-piece with a non-matching vest haha. I'm happy though, and am looking for another excuse to buy from them now that I know my size.

I loved my first experience in Milan showroom, boys over there were super helpful and very kind. They were even willing to organise the appointment via Instagram message. Once I arrived to the showroom they knew straight away who I was and they served me with very well English spoken man. On your Pro’s, I agree with all of it. For me, I take the clothes back to my tailor, who does a great job without the pressure or high cost. On the one major con, the service. That’s been a 75/25 issue. I’ve had great experiences, and some mediocre ones. A lot of it depended on location. Houston, Austin and even Philly were great. NY shops left a lot to be desired. I still shop there because they do make great clothes. Take good with bad I guess.

Great video and insights Brian, as usual! I'd consider myself a regular shopper at SS, and I have four suits that I've purchased both in the U.S. and in Germany. Overall, great experience with the clothing itself... nice fit and I'm lucky in that I usually don't need but very minimal tailoring. As Brian mentioned, the fabrics and patterns are second to none. I must say, though, that my customer service experiences have varied widely. I visited the Georgetown store last year, remained in the store for about 15-20 minutes, and was never approached or spoken to by a sales associate. More recently, I visited the shop in Stuttgart and was immediately greeted with a curt "Do you have an appointment?" as soon as I walked through the door. Granted, it was a busy Saturday afternoon, but this is crazy... I didn't know I needed an appointment to shop here, and I told the sales associate as much. I continued to look around but was no longer in the mood to buy anything at that point. That is an absolute customer service FAIL and SS (as well as other retailers) should take note... NEVER ask a customer if s/he has an appointment! Otherwise, I've had great service experiences and continue to shop at SS.

Yes, I just own one navy or Teal blazer from SS. It fits me perfectly with no alterations required. You’re right, one must be extremely careful when going to the store however. You must let them know from the beginning that if you like the way something fits, then leave it alone and don’t touch it. Number one, nobody can tell me how something is supposed to fit. I’ve been doing this long before most of these guys were even born!

Brian, very informative. My experiences at Suitupply, in San Francisco, had to beg for someone in order to make a purchase; in San Jose, was fine, but the styilist and I had very different taste I was wanted to look at shirts and ties for a party (which I mentioned), but was presented with looks more appropriate for applying for a mortgage. I went elsewhere for a shirt and tie.

I don't have a store anywhere near me so all my interaction with them has been purely web based. I totally agree on the pants not fitting right issue and the stylists being obsessed with tapering the pant leg. I know part of the issue has to do with my having really long legs (I'm 6'2") and narrow waist (30"). I also like to wear my lucchese cowboy boots (I live in Texas) with my suits so I have to have room in the pant leg to put over the tall shaft of the boot. The stylist ended up tapering my pant leg so much that it looked extremely unflattering when I tried to pull them over my boot shaft. Suit Supply did end up fixing them somewhat, but the process took alot longer with all the extra alterations. That being said, I absolutely love the linen sport jacket I bought from them. The havana cut fit me perfectly and the quarter lining and lack of shoulder pads makes it really comfortable to wear in the hot Texas weather.

Long time viewer and reader before that. I use them fairly frequently and have for a few years. More recently I started getting custom/MTM stuff. All in NYC. I couldn't disagree more on customer service. They are great there. If anything ever happens to a garment or you dont like an alteration they take it right back and fix it or change it. They have done so for me over a year after purchase. They turn items around quickly and will ship it back to you for free. They are always attentive. I never feel pressured.
The fabrics are great and cost for quality is unmatched. Obviously the quality could be better but for an 800-1000 dollar custom suit its great. I have thought about upgrading to higher level tailored pieces, but the customer service is what keeps me coming back.

I somehow do agree on the alteration part, I visited a London shop today, and for sure it's very posh and the people there are very professional. It is a bit like Starbucks but in a very modern high-quality product way with better efficiency. I see customers picking up their stuff, people coming like waves, just keep coming. Many of their staff I would say indeed with an attitude, not going to judge as I did not talk to the rest of the staff, and felt not very approachable, but they are polite. Alteration is indeed costing me quite some money, and it is surely their business model, by selling extra packages ( alterations ) to generate profit from where the good fabrics might not be able to. The sales assistant with me was good, she did bring a lot of stuff which could possibly be my option of choice also shoes to let me try on, to see the whole picture, also a smart way of getting your attention for their other products. I would say I would surely go somewhere else if the ready-to-wear suit + alteration cost you quite a lot. There are many good old tailors. But if you just want to shop shirt, jacket or trousers, might still be worth it. I just did a shirt and a pair of trousers, seems alright. At least in this busy world, you can get it done in a timely manner...

Very good review and spot on with the pants, not just with suit supply but with any suiting brand that goes more towards trendy than the customer they are servicing. I am not a fan of too tapered pants, it just doesn’t work for me, doesn’t look good on me, I just don’t like it. My pants needs to be somewhere between a slim and straight leg with a break. Slim at the thigh area and straight leg below the knee with a good rise. J Crews Classic/Crosby pants fit me surprisingly well. But it really pisses me off when stylists try to push trendy on you. A MTM company which gets very good reviews I needed to taper my pants a bit since they were very loose when i first got them, the stylist didn’t want to lengthen my pants and I said ok I trust you. What happened after when I got my pant is they were too short and needed to get lengthened. Listen to the customer since everyone’s preference is different.

Adding my late comment and experience with women's garments, which they are still expanding. Ditto on the pants fit, though they've expanded into some pleated pants options that will probably have a more flattering and classic fit than the Robin trouser, with its mid-rise and flat front. The jacket fits about as well as one could want for a straight size - I was truly pleasantly surprised. My experience with store associates has been good - the gentleman who spoke with me at the St. Louis location was kind and helpful (particularly for such an irregular customer!) I'm hoping to try Pini Parma based on several reviews and the fact that they have women's sizing suggestions on their site.

Agree that it can feel like it is aimed at a younger guy looking to be a little bolder. Good assessment.

Great review. I agree with your points especially the Pants. They never fit me properly and I don't normally have problem with any other brands' pants.
