Daily reminder in regards to Skull and Bones: "AAAA" was something used in sports long before Ubisoft claimed it. It was a term for a player that absolutely *dominates* the minor leagues but gets instantly dumpstered by everyone in the major leagues. It's literally a term meant to mock someone who doesn't really fit into either category for their sport.
Dilbert called it decades ago. "at the advice of my dog, I'd like to ask to double my budget, this will make it an even more spectacular failure, thus guaranteeing a promotion for me." "as your boss I'd get recognition too... Okay."
What I can’t get over with ac is…it was already diverse! And it was loved. The first assassin Altair was Middle Eastern. There’s been characters from all kinds of backgrounds and no one cared because they fit their background and story. They’re just so uncreative they don’t know anything about African history so they’ll just use Japanese history.
Pretty sure it's not a good idea to even think they might know anything about Japanese history. Actually, we both might need to gear down even more. Could have stopped at 'don't know anything' and been accurate.
The first game, at the very end of the credits, has a message that says "This game was made with love and passion, by men and women of all religions and races. We hope you loved it as much as we loved making it" And back in 2008, it truly came from their hearts. But no one sets up a joke quite like time. Just look at them now!
Nobody liked liberation but me, but that one had a black female protagonist freeing slaves. They sun been doing diversity but I guess they thought they weren't yelling about it enough
@@somethingusername2538 At the heart of it is not that they have gone woke, is that they had an unsustainable business model that just made slop after slop and failed to see what the audience wanted
The problem isn't whether or not Yasuke was a Samurai or a slave. The problem is that this is the first time a historical figure has ever been featured as an MC in the Assassins Creed franchise. This makes it blatantly obvious that Yasuke's inclusion is 100% a matter of DEI. They couldn't make the MC black unless he was Yasuke, and if they'd stuck with the tradition of making the MC a fictional character, they would have necessarily had to be Japanese, being that Japan was almost entirely ethnically homogenous. Yasuke was also the only non-Japanese figure notorious enough to be recognizable as the MC. The fact is, they wanted a non-Japanese MC, and the only way they could do that was Yasuke. And the only reason to want a non-Japanese MC in a game set in feudal Japan is DEI. There is literally NO other reason. There was never any winning with that pick, but they're slaves to the vocal minority that demands diversity for diversity's sake, and that has cost, and is going to continue costing them big time.
I agree with most of this, except clarification that Japan wasn’t just homogeneous, they were outright xenophobic until after the Meiji restoration, and even then it took almost another 80 years or so for full integration.
I think if they reeeeally wanted to represent a group with little to no representation, they should have just gone with an Ainu main character. It's an easy way to "represent a minority culture" while not shitting on Japan. They already had president with Connor. No, they went with Yasuke not just for the DEI social push, it was for Black Lives Matter.
You know what the funniest part is?? The Japanese were so upset about the main character being a black samurai that they started looking into where this character came from and they found out that he was actually made up by a white guy to sell his book about a black samurai.
I just realized, this modern influx of DEI crap is EXACTLY what you would expect if an invasion of Karens had taken over the C-Suite of these game studios. Arrogant, narcissistic busybodies that have to tell others how to live, how to think, how to enjoy things.
How do you know a company lost touch to their customers? When the customers are literally cheering your downfall with no sympathie left to your plight. Because its all self inflicted and based on utterly antagonizing your former customer base. I am old enough to saw the rise and downfall of an entire gaming empire.
The most f--ked up thing about this is the fact that the employees, probably, aren’t the one’s who failed, it was the idiot managers and executives. The ones that created this mess will most likely get their cushy severance packages, to go ruin more companies, while those who tried their best with a terrible situation are getting all the blame and consequences.
wtf did they choose samurai and not NINJA? They could have brought it back to the original concept of running on rooftops and being a silent assassin. They could even have male and female assassins, and be historically accurate
You’d think the company losing 80% of its stock would make the shareholders releases their methods weren’t working but why do that when the company’s could just blame us for not giving them money for whatever they give out
The sales are the point. The problem is that they all think that the messaging they shove in pointlessly will increase those sales without alienating their longtime audience. That audience isn't into the tonal shifts
Correct. They did expect us to stay. Now we avoid. Actively, even using lists. They are all cooked. Gamers tend to have deep grudges and a very long memory.
You know, the funny thing is, I was in a competition at school back when Black Flag came out. It was basically a simulated stock market type thing. My team won it precisely because I knew it was going to come out and be good. The difference between then and now is wild.
Since the announcements, I never had a problem with Yasuke being in the game. My problem, was with making him a playable character. No playable character has ever been a historical figure. There have been plenty of historical figures within the games, just look at the Ezio trilogy. There's PLENTY of historical characters. They made sense within the setting and none of them were playable. Yasuke should have been a retainer, as he actually was. Work him into the story, make him vital to some parts or even the primary plot, I don't care. But why did they make him the playable character? A Japanese man would have fit the setting better and wouldn't have any of the backlash, and set Ubisoft in a much better spot with this game.
The push for diversity was not for profit but to attract investment money from ESG funds. It's more a check in the box. Stock performance (investment cash flows) is more than 50% of a company executive's paycheck. Since late 2022, those ESG funds are running out of cash. Nowadays, it's about company performance and forward earnings. Most executives didn't get the memo like Ubisoft. For Ubisoft's quality, that's what they get for hiring relatively new employees just to reduce salary/wage costs. My company did the same and it's a terrible practice.
@@ColinFox What's amazing to me, is that at Ninjitsu museums in the cities they took place in, there is actual history of these women, and the clothes they wore. Not sure if that was a Witcher potion though, as since only witchers can use them, normal humans will die from it. Either it's a different kind of potion, or they made her magic do something to handle it. 2) Intergalactic's lead is Tati Gabriella, who isn't ugly. They just decided to make her butch in the game. I guess the idea is if it was a guy, would the same design (fashion, hair) be as appealing, better, or worse? I'd prefer something be done with the hair rather than be bald, but I don't mind a female _trying_ to be as "cool" as a male character (with tits). 3) Yes, I prefer sexy feminine female characters, but I also understand wanting to tell a different kind of story with different kinds of characters.
