    Thank you for always being rational and open-minded and not focused on making clickbait, rage-bait, grifting garbage like RUclips is flooded with involving every single piece of "nerd" media these days. You and the Avatarist are the only Avatar fan channels I'm subscribed to because you both approach topics with nuance and make sure comment sections stay level-headed.
    A LOT of people forget that every single adaptation, even ones people love, have lots of changes. There is no way you could do a 1:1 live action adaptation of Avatar:The Last Airbender and make it exactly like the original and have it work. There is always going to be changes to be made. It would also be boring as hell if it was 1:1. "Remix, not a cover" is a great approach for staying true to the spirit of an adaptation but going your own way. The Last of Us and One Piece are both great recent examples of this. Both feature a LOT of changes to the overall story and characters (including changing aspects of their characters like how Sanji in One Piece isn't super horny and gross towards women and Joel is vulnerable and failing in his health) but still cover the basic beats of the stories and feel true to the spirit of the source material.
    I think, by all accounts, the showrunners of the live action Avatar show look to be doing the same. Covering the same big beats of Book 1, making changes and remixing events, cutting out certain things, expanding others but staying true to the spirit of the source. As someone who is a writer, who works in the industry, everything they are saying makes sense and seems very thoughtful. No change seems to be done without clear purpose (including redirecting how sexist Sokka is) and they are going to be replicating iconic moments that don't need to be changed. I'm looking forward to a new, remixed vision of the show with these new interpretation of the characters. Seems like a lot of love and heart has gone into it. I don't expect it to be flawless but it seems like it's going to be emotional and heartfelt and fun.

      I am pinning your comment my friend because I think you nailed it in such a reasonable way that I honestly think speaks for itself. Given you're a writer in the industry which is a cool addition to your feedback I appreciate you letting me in on your look as someone who is a professional for these kinds of things! And yes, I will never ever go down the path of being a clickbait, rage-bait, grifting channel. It's so forced and fake what those people do to try and be relevant in the conversations we have in entertainment when not caring at all about the substance of it since all they are there for is money. If you don't mind me asking what have you worked on? As you said you are in the industry.

      @@uncleirohsteashop Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate your response. Just to be clear, I'm a writer (and a game dev) as my side hustle/creative outlet and then I work in the industry as a film and TV editor/assistant editor. I've worked on a few shows and movies and a bunch of documentaries earlier after I graduated college. I actually worked on a project for M. Night Shyamalan too funnily enough and he was really nice to work with. I think a lot of people, especially hardcore fans, don't understand no one is trying to "ruin their childhood" when adapting something. A lot of the time it's just a job. It's a job working on a film and TV show like anything else. Everyone wants to do the best job they can and sometimes there's a lot of factors out of your control. I always try to find the good in something even if I don't fully like it because a lot of talented, hard working folks contribute to something and it's not just the product of one writer or showrunner that everyone can dogpile on if they don't like something about it.

      i'm not happy that it's known from the start. we become the audience to a historical docu-drama and are alienated from the experience of adventure and discovery which we shared with the gaang in the animated series. we become outsiders and all stakes risk feeling empty even if presented as high. I agree, the genocide should be shown in detail - it does change the tone in a positive way allowing more nuanced narraiton - but only when Aang finds out at the southern air temple, eg via a spiritual vision when enraged and heartbroken he falls into the avatar state (talking to Gyatso's spirit or memories, so that Gyatso is *in* the story and not a narrator), or even better as an explanation given by Roku or another avatar (which amounts pretty much to the same thing but obviously Aang can already talk to past avatars, and I doubt talking to the dead is a canonically permissible addition). showing the genocide wouldn't perplex me generally except seeing how they think children could handle and understand sokka's sexism (and his turnaround!) in the animated series, but adults can't in this new live action targeted at a more mature audience, I'm a bit perplexed about their judgement. how is brutal extermination less problematic than a bit of misoginy? especially if used as a narrative tool for the character's development as a statement against sexism?? in an internally and psychologically consistent way that has us understand the origin of Sokka's flaw as being the product of circumstance and not maliciousness in the first place??

    i predict they’ll do an emphasis on the “grooming” Ozai has done on Azula. I think the degree of this is greatly understated and how it contributes to Azulas mental health by the end of the show. If you think back to the flashbacks in Zuko Alone, Azula had said some horrible things as a young girl. Specifically her saying “I think our father would make a better firelord…” and such things about her own family, while its very possible that she had these thoughts on her own, I believe she was really just repeating the words that her father had engraved into her, as children often do repeat the things their parents say, usually in an attempt to please them. Flash forward to the day of the black sun part 2 when Zuko confronts Ozai, the first question Ozai asks is “Why would Azula lie to me” which really says a lot.

    • @Snzn18
      @Snzn18 5 месяцев назад +7

      I just hope they don't fully put a victim card on Azula, since Azula also is just flat out a Highly functioning psycho/sociopathic person to begin with and all the Fire Nation propaganda only exacerbated it.
      I don't mind the "She was brainwashed all along angle" but Azula is not that type of character.
      You can think of a character like Sherlock Holmes (like the BBC Sherlock). Like since he is sociopathic most people around his circle mostly end up being wierded out and cause them to have a falling out with each other when Sherlock lets out more of his sociopathic tendencies. Which that also basically happened with Azula and her friends.

    • @resolvedfate1295
      @resolvedfate1295 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@Snzn18Yes but she is also a victim. As if you read her comic. She was groomed as soon as she started fire bending. She was just a normal girl before that. Plus her mother kind of helped in how she grew up. Not intentionally. As she was kind of cornered. Knowing how Ozai is. No excuse for how psychotic and bad she treats her brother. But no one is born evil. Plus the creators said she would of been a normal girl in a normal environment.

    • @Snzn18
      @Snzn18 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@resolvedfate1295 not saying she was born evil just because one is soviopathic and even pyshopathic don't mean they are inately evil, they just lack certain baseline emotions or feelings one would normally have. That is why I gave "Sherlock Holmes in the BBC Sherlock" as an example. Basically I gave a "Highly functioning sociopath" example. Sherlock isn't evil but due to his mental disposition He usually do insensitive stuff due to him lacking empathy at some occasions and that empathy and some basically emotions don't naturally occur to him compared to a normal person. Which cause s him to act a bit too disrespectful when examining a corpse or to take emotional cues that the victims distress and his lack of empathy of their concerns.
      And that is my main point that they don't go "fully" paint her with the victim card.
      Like if you read my first comment what I said in this reply is already redundant.
      I did not deny the Fire Nation and her parents' influence in Azula. My point is that they also don't lean to much with yhe victim card and not showcase that she also have straight up sociopathic disposition to begin with.
      Like basically Zuko was almost raised the same as her but their base mental disposition and talents are also part of the equation on which side of the spectrum they had ended up.
      I also did read the comics just so you know.

    Regarding lack of Earth Bending in Live Action book 1: They're adapting Omashu and then they're adapting Winter Solstice, we've already seen in the trailer where Zuko is rescuing Iroh from the earth kingdom benders. Imprisoned and Great Divide were definitely dropped. But I think Imprisoned is getting moved to Book 2 and they're dropping Avatar Day to fill its place.

I think since we have the casting for most of Jet's freedom fighters it would be weird if they left out Haru and Tyro from the castings so far if they had cast them. So since season 2 is Earth, it makes since for them to do Imprisoned there, maybe an episode combined with the Avatar State? And Great Divide.. is the great divide.. so.. All just speculation, of course.

    I’m really hoping they go deeper into Azula’s trauma and give her more emotional depth. They did show us a little bit in the original, but I feel like 95% of her scenes just showed her as a “monster” and there was so much more to unpack

    • @Snzn18
      @Snzn18 5 месяцев назад +4

      I mean original series basically tells us that Azula is already sociopathic since she was a kid even without the Fire Nation proganda that brainwash fire nation kids. So for the animated show it makes sense she was presented that way. She did not become a monster due to trauma or anything, its more so she is already sociopathic to begin with and Fire Nation culture only exacerbated that.
      and her Hung up towards her mother is more so Azula realizing she don't have that normal psychology her Mother expected her to be. Basically yes, Fire Nation also lacks mental health education, the mother don't know how to handle a child of that spectrum and no Doctor can diagnos Azula either and it make sense since they live in an imperialstic age.

Aang dealt with his grief by doing fun stuff and making others laugh to not drown in the fact that his people were GENOCIDED and that the Fire Nation thought it was justified because of brainwashing and not because they truly believed Air nomads deserved it.
      I feel like Aang’s emotions should be explored in more depth eventually because him being written off as the naive little kid is a mistake many do; when it’s Zuko who thinks the fire nation is right in their war that is the naive and delusional one. Yes, it’s propaganda but it’s also the naivety that they can do no wrong because it’s his nation. It’s unpopular I guess but Aang’s probably the one who understands right from the start that the war is bad for EVERYONE (Fire Nation included) cause they could be doing their own shit at home instead of running around killing people and dying on some random piece of dirt around the world…

    I kind of have to wonder if these little details Albert Kim is giving on Twitter and in interviews are actually helping or hurting.
    He says they're leaving out the Elephant Koi and some people fly off the handle saying "they're taking away all Aang's fun and making him boring and joyless and too serious!" without even seeing if they replace it with other fun moments that serve the same purpose.
    Given everything else they seem to be keeping in, the same people might've been fine with it in the context of the show but now they're gonna spend 3 weeks back in thier fault-finding mode convincing themselves that this will suck.

    I know adaptations are never 1 to 1 remakes, but my fears stem from the creators leaving the project due to “creative differences.” Something amazing as having you’re work of art adapted into live action must be hard to walk away from, which makes me think there must have been some really big changes that the creators really didn’t like. And hearing the show runner say it’s not a cover, it’s a remix makes me even more scared. It sounds like they didn’t just make the necessary changes to go from animation to live action, but actually rewrote things that already worked well to create something completely different. Idk, the trailer looked amazing, so fingers crossed.

    • @uncleirohsteashop
      @uncleirohsteashop  5 месяцев назад

      I mean you also have to keep in mind, we don't know the full story behind the creative differences. For all we know, maybe the creators wanted TOO MUCH control on the show that would've sent it into an even worse place. Again, yes we already know a lot of the changes like the timeline issue for example is huge! They are removing sozen's comet in the sense that they are removing the issue of time management. It won't be a year long journey but maybe 3 years or longer. Albert Kim as the new showrunner has impressed me because he seems to have a good handle on the world of Avatar. So much of it looks right in footage and concept. Like straight up pulled from the cartoon. I am still going in open minded as I do for everything thing I watch no matter the IP. I just think people will do themselves a disservice to go in wanting to hate it and speak to their goals in mind to make nothing but a negative situation out of it. Anyone who thought this would be a 1 to1 doesn't understand what it means to adapt. Last of Us and One Piece fell under this same speculation, everyone was crapping on it before it came out but then when we did get it it became one of the best shows of that year. We just have to give it a chance.

They act like this is out of character but it’s not. Aang has always put himself in harms way to help others. Defending the southern water tribe from Zuko, jumping on the unagi to take out the fires on burning homes, battling a literal volcano in the fortuneteller episode, helping out the village being terrorized by Hei Bei ect. When it comes to adapting and remixing, I like Spider Man as an example. Yes you can remix and reinterpret things but you still need to have Peter Parker somewhere in there. Marvel failed to portray the real essence of Peter Parker in their first two movies. Only in No Way Home they finally got it right and showed how he has to fight with losses of family members and giving up his own life to be Spider Man. So for Avatar they can remix a lot of things, but they need to get the essence of the characters right, and I’m a bit skeptical if they manage to do that without living through so many adventures.
    On a different note, regarding Inprisonment, there is a guy casted as „earthbender prisoner“ on the IMDb cast list in episode 7 for whatever that’s worth.

For example, Zuko helped Katara get closure from her mother’s death and Katara gave him the encouragement and the courage to go up and talk to Iroh and make amends. He even threw himself and got hit by a lightning bolt for her, that doesn’t even scream fanfiction, it screams something more.

    I'm really curious how they're handling the time jump now. Because if there's more of a drive to reach the NWT, skipping detours to get there, but then much more of a delay before heading to the Earth Kingdom, how will they make it make sense?

    • @StillOnTrack
      @StillOnTrack 5 месяцев назад

      @@uncleirohsteashop I mean that Albert Kim's reasoning for excluding Aang's desire to go ride giant animals has to do with wanting to create more of a sense of urgency in Aang to reach the Northern Water Tribe. But from his earlier comments, we know that he's also very likely delaying the timing of Sozin's Comet in order to work in a reasoning for a time jump due to the actors aging between the filming of seasons 1 and 2. This seems to create a conflict between a greater sense of urgency to reach the NWT to master waterbending, and a lesser urgency to reach the Earth Kingdom to master earthbending. So I'm just curious and looking forward to how they will resolve this possible conflict.
      In the cartoon, the urgency comes first from Aang learning while resolving the Hei Bai attacks that he has to quickly reach the Avatar Temple on the crescent-shaped island, then once he does, he learns there that the comet is coming very soon and he doesn't have much time to master the other three the elements. We know from the teaser and trailer that both Hei Bai and the crescent-shaped island are being included, so I wonder Aang will still learn about the comet, but maybe not ~when~ it's coming.
