  • The executive producer/shower runner of Netflix's Avatar the Last Airbender live action series recently did an interview where he talks about the original creators (Bryke/Bryan Konietzko/Michael D. Martino) leaving, changes from cartoon to live action, and much more. A new image of the show was also released.. We will be breaking all that down in today's video..

Genuinely not worried about the show. In the end, the animated series still exists, and if the show answers or shows small details we never knew, I think that’s good enough.

My main worry is if there will be any humor ☹️ I feel a huge issue with m night’s version was no moments of lightness or humor and I still don’t see evidence that there will be in this one. What makes the writing of the show incredible is the complexity, that they show many emotions, conflicts, as well as highs you get in experiencing a show. The massive budget is great but nothing beats great writing, which is the point of the AtLA fandom to begin with.

Yes that’s so true. Copying it would make it look like it’s trying to overshadow the original, or the fact that they don’t have their own legs to stand on. I think it would be best to take three years, as well, because I think in live action, having romance between teenagers is more tasteful if they are older. I'm not a huge fan of romance-with-teens storylines anyway, especially with actual child actors. The ethics of consent for getting child actors to kiss is grey, imo. I don't think that will be a huge issue for this story, and that's partly because I think the actors will be older when any potential kissing might happen.

    • @CosmicMoth

@@IanJenn356094 I think what is most likely is that the original creators wanted it to be TOO accurate to the original version. I have a feeling when anything was changed, such as starting with the air nomad genocide. Its like the channel said, somethings just have to be changed for a live action version not aimed at kids. it has to have a more serious tone. I truly believe theyll stay true to the characters themselves and the canonical plot. What I think theyll do though, is unfold that plot in a different way, with more focus on certain areas, and less on others. This has to be done in order to work, and I think the creators just wanted to make it exactly the same but with a live cast.

Really vibeing with Sokka's attire. He's a warrior from a cold cold nation. He should have leather, layers, padding for survival and insulation and also to vent heat, when needed, and to stay protected. I keep using Lord Of The Rings as an example. It isn't a 1-1 translation of the book, but it is quite possibly the best adaptation of a book ever created.
If this show is given the same sort of attention to "The Spirit" of the original, it will be nothing short of EPIC!!
edit: My only fear is that it could become a victim of it's own success. The original story was not prolonged for profit. They told their epic tale, and ended it where they needed to end it. I hope NETFLIX understands that this is an enormous part of why it is so good, beginning to end.

That would have left the show with no conclusion Then they changed their minds and let the guys finish out the story in a third season. So in effect, it wasn't "canceled". It was a struggle, but the guys told the story they wanted to tell.
This is how serialized shows work. At the end of a season, the top brass decides whether to make another season or not. That means like 99.5% of ALL serialized shows in the history of television have been "canceled".
Oh there os the occasional exception where the whole team decides to move on to other things, but generally, it just comes down to the bosses deciding not to pay for a show any more. Deciding that this is going to be a "Final Season" isn't the same thing as "Being Canceled".

I don’t wholly agree with the original first season of ATLA not having found it’s footing yet, for the reason of not introducing adult themes much. For me it makes total sense that Aang doesn’t at first realise what’s at stake, being a child and therefore the first season being kinda childish.
The first season, in my mind, is more or less about Aang coping by ignoring his responsibilities, taking every chance he can to distract himself with every other thing he encounters. Having to step into adult boots, with all the responsibilities that comes with it, at 12 years old must mess with your head so much I can’t help but regard it as a trauma. Adding to that; he, and only he, has the potential to save the world. So I guess there’s a dark adult theme looming between the lines in a lot of ways.
As Aang throughout the seasons comes to realise and more importantly accept his massive and dark responsibilities, so does the overall feel of the series gradually get darker and more "adult".
Well, that’s only my interpretation. Anyone else think it actually makes sense? 😂

I 100% agree with you. Thats always how I viewed it too. And I infact loved how it gradually became more adult. Being a kid when it originally aired, I felt as though the show was growing with us. The characters were growing up along side us. I also fully understood the darker themes, even as a child. I think thats what endeared me to the show so much as a child. It didn’t entirely shy away from those things like so many other shows from the time did. I think kids could understand Aang and why he felt the need to ignore his responsibilities. Because a lot of us were around the same age and could appreciate how he felt.

The biggest mistake that creators make all the time doing remakes is when they decide "to change details for new generations or the new audience because the original story was aired long ago". From the Hollywood's experience we've seen that it never works. If the original story is still widely popular and has a lot of loyal fans, you better don't change a lot, just put more details and fix mistakes if there were some. Nobody wants your "new fresh unique vision". Yeah, maybe some critics will say "nothing new bluh bluh", but you will be successful for fans.
Do you remember Death Note from Netflix? They made Yagami just another classic american bullied guy, what a shit that was! And now we have One Piece with minimum of changes, and look how successful that is! And there are a lot more examples. I hope they start realising this finally.

My thoughts on a 1 to 1: no point. Just go watch the OG, ya know?
My thoughts on a re-imagining: makes it sound like it's gonna stray far from the source material on purpose.....but the thing is, if the story of ATLA is retold in a new format (live action) and stays as true as it possibly can while ALSO playing to the strengths of the new format, it's gonna be different enough to be interesting to watch. Lord of the Rings movies are a good example of this....if they were made verbatim to the books would have been very wordy and longer and weird for a movie....books would be better anyway.....so why do we like the movies? Because they're different from the books by playing to the strengths of cinema, while also faithful to books in every way it possibly can be.
I don't think they needed to advertise anything other than that they were telling the story of ATLA in a new format. If they do it well it's gonna be both different and technically faithful.

Why do they think that just because they are a pre industrial civilization they automatically are dirty savages. Second of, the show made it a point to show team avatar regularly stop at bodies of water to take baths and wash clothes, as a matter of fact, in the very first scene of the show Katara talks about washing Sokka's dirty socks.

If they wanted to create their own story, they shouldn't have called it Avatar. Calling it Avatar without starting true to the original is just using the fame of the original show to get people to watch their new thing.

If they put it in a regular green forest it would takeaway from a cool part of the episode. I hope it's in the Winter Solstice episode or whatever they're planning to do with the Pirate Waterbending scroll episode. They spend alot of time in the forest that episode. Also could be the Jong Jong episode. However I'd bet it's earlier in the season than that. You usually don't see trailers show later season stuff.

So, some red flags, tho beyond the original creators leaving 1) If it follows the other netfix (and general movie trends) it's going to be pitched as a avatar movie, but turn into 'Kitara's Story'....like Scott Pilgrim anime, Masters of the Universe, etc. 2) Putting the genocide up top is a bad call. The whole impact of that scene was the light-hearted traveling that Ang was on with the siblings such that when they discovered the fate of the air tribe, it hit that much harder. What they should do, is just leave it exactly the same tone and story as the original, and when they travel to the air kingdom and find the bones, they can do a flashback to the attack. Do some kind of clever transition betwen current time and the flashback. But to put it up front 'to set the tone' is a bad call and completely misses the spirit of the Avatar storytelling which is this juxtaposition of opposites together to form something stronger (example, Aang and Zuko, Zuko and Iroh, all the elements and the avater, etc). It's a very strong theme throughout the entire story, and to take that out would be going down the road of the origional movie, and we know how that turned out...
Netfix, if you are reading, I'm available for consulting on your screenplay changes.

fantastic. just confirmed my worries. the power of the animated series is above all that the viewer is as informed as the gaang/zuko. we didn't get to have narrator-level omniscience, it didn't feel like being an audience watching a documentary of a story which fate is set in stone. it felt like you were on the adventure with the characters. odds felt challenging. new characters felt like strangers. unveiling the Air nomad genocide informs us about a history that Aang himself is oblivious to, he finds out in episode 3, as we did, and won't. I am not as worried about changing the template of the plotlines/character arcs (as long as they stay similar in tone and moral, and characters are not given a new personality that doesn't fit, for example), but showing scenes and characters removed from the discovery of the adventure itself (like Ozai, who shouldn't even appear until season 3, but is shown even in the trailer) just takes you out of it. showing parallel A/B storylines, with flashbacks and flashforwards, or not in chronological order like Tarantino movies is *not* "dramatisation". It might be ok if done well, but it's not necessary. the animated series was dramatic too, at times. Drama is feeling the stakes, not editing the exposition to confuse the audience. Not painting the whole world in a serious tone for the whole time. You can't force it, or the audience rebels and doesn't get attached to the characters or the story. Drama comes out organically, it's caring spontaneously about the characters, because of how their personality (mis)fits with other characters' and the context they're in. They shouldn't ever try and convince us that the conflict in the story is important, or state explicitly that the character is a hero. We'll see it ourselves if it is true in universe, if they try to sell it to the audience they don't care about internal coherence or intrinsic stability of the worldbuilding, it's just pandering and marketing. Very pessimistic but I still hope I'm wrong

Aaah the nostalgia of that particular SDCC that you used footage from. I'm barely out of frame at 3:37 as the Zhang Leader, you can see my hog-monkey.
I'm reserving my judgement on the series until it drops, but I do respect that changes to the pacing and order of story beats should be moved around to fit the format of a live action series, especially given the different run time. It's so important to remember how writing is impacted by knowing if the show will be able to continue for the length of a full arc or not - Think about how disjointed the storytelling of Korra was because Bryke only had 13 episodes to work with and each season they had to treat as the last. The original AtLA had more time to develop the weight of the over-arching story after they reached the winter solstice milestone and knew they had the contract to finish the show as they wanted. As far as we know, we could only get 1 season from Netflix if it doesn't perform they way the execs want it to, so I'm sure that impacted the writing process.

The puffy jacket Sokka is wearing could be an allusion to or a thin version of gambeson, a type of dense textile armour that was designed to absorb blunt impacts and could stop sword/spear/knife cuts but not thrusts, it was also worn under plate and mail armour as padding. It could also be that his jacket is thick because he is from the southern water tribe at the South Pole, it would make sense his day-to-day clothes, beyond his coat and outdoor gear we see in ep1+2, would be thicker to protect against the cold. Katara's clothes also seem reasonably thick as well whereas Aang's are thinner, though still warm for the southern air temple's climate.

  • @adde27

It's not necessarily a bad thing that Bryke aren't onboard anymore: they had free reign for Korra and without some of the more talented writers from AtLA, it really showed their failings in world-building, character arcs and story. Several things from the latter show contradicts or retcons AtLA to the franchise's overall detriment, so I sincerely hope they don't include crap lika Raava.

A main reason why the original live action of ATLA was so bad was because it just also didn't feel like Avatar. As TheAvatarist said, how they showed the different attacks and bending was god awful and it wasn't genuine martial arts. but also It felt like a person that read one summary of each season of ATLA and then combined what they thought was right and fitting without thinking about why its so loved and thought deeply about why Zuko did that or why Aang did that, they just followed by whatever script they had and it just wasn't genuine IMO. I don't think I have much worries about this live action mainly because the executive producer himself is more invested in ATLA then most people. but we'll see when that day comes. can't wait!

Well this definitely helps dispel some major concerns i had. It seems they're really gonna honor the original series without disrupting the main story arc. Im perfectly fine with them adding in extra details or story, or bypassing some filler if it means adding onto the main story arc. After all the original creators didnt know how well Season 1 of TLAB would go so it kinda skimmed thru many smaller stories that weren't directly tied to the main story. So adding in those more important details in the live action so they have a bigger impact later is fine by me.
Although im still hoping we get some proper humor in this. I know its directed towards an older audience and is mainly a "drama", but doesnt meant he traditional humor cant come back either to keep the light hearted moments pure.
