Fun fact: With the exception of a dude called SK8ER BRUH who did Newer Wii and Newer DS, and Pillbawks who also did a Newer Wii run, Mayro seems to be the only Coinless runner who covered modded games so far. (Or RUclips's search just won't spit out the others to me.)
Your jump sync had me dying the other night during the research - it was super cool to see that you played into this! Thanks for checking this one out, Ak - great to hear from you
Ceave proved that it's not just skill that needs to be displayed. The video must be fun and entertaining to go viral. Honesty I've been following ceave from before he started challenges and during his Mario maker videos. To be honest I would still enjoy his videos even if he switched to makeup tutorials his video making skills are so impressive
For me RUclips started suggesting Ceave's Mario Maker videos like crazy, so I started checking them out and subscribed at some point. A few weeks after that he uploaded his coinless run and all the other recommendations started to flow in.
I still am waiting for a new video in Mario Maker. I came to ceave when watching ryukahr and his runs of mario maker, then I asked myself how the levels are designed and that is how I came to ceave and later to his coinless runs.
It means so much for me to be even a few seconds of this, thank you SO much, this kind of recognition is so important for me. Seeing myself in a list along so many other people who are so influential of this, really, part of history on youtube, that's incredible. Great video as always, keep it up
While VG Myths was an inspiration for Ceave’s challenge - see his tags for that one - I’d say that the coinless challenge popularity that was the focus here can still be attributed to the algorithm loving his video. Thanks for checking this one out, Patchpen!
@Kevin Ng gamechamp3000 also beat ratchet and clank 1 AND 2 wrench only, I was at the past level and about to be the 3rd person in the whole planet to complete it when my PS3 stopped booting up
@Kevin Ng Do you have footage of your SM63 attempt? That's one of the games that have been done the fewest times, only found 1 run so far while there's at least 5 runs for each official game.
That’s my theory too! The official coinless challenges in NSMBU and the rebellious spirit to NSMB2 would likely spawn that trend Thanks for checking this one out, S23SegaNinten
Good video, but I think that this type of challenge started to become popular, after Gamechamp 3000 uploaded his Mario Odyssey Jumpless run. Although you're right about coinless becoming popular by Ceaves video.
Post Apocalypse has been pretty crazy - maybe that was the perfect environment for coinless videos to take hold? Haha Thanks for checking this one out, John!
SKIIIIP. So glad to see you are still chugging away on YT. Your video actually popped up in a recommended tab for me so yay for that lol. Hope you had a great new year, Looking forward to great content going forward
I'm glad that Odyssey actually made use of coins as lives in...place of lives. For games that have this hangover of lives from arcade days, like Sonic, it makes sense to make a twisted, alternate use of these items.
Nice video! It really clarifies what everyone is saying like "this guy did it first. No this guy did it first!" Edit: So many of my subscriptions are in the comments lol
Hey GMA! Thanks for checking this one out 20k is insane, and definitely a great way to start off 2019. This history style video is outside my wheelhouse, but I’d love to do more down the road. Good to hear there’s interest!
One of my favorite youtubers who has done coinless challenges is Bikdiponabus. He had some vids way back when doing several sm64 playthroughs, the galaxy games, and even sunshine, all coinless. He even did an all coins possible challenge, and I can't believe he had that much patience.

I think they both have their places in youtube, although I personally prefer the absurdity of the TAS challenges. Anyways, great video.
I was interested in Ceave's Mario Maker content even before the "coinless" trend, but I definitely started watching him way more, and others of the same ilk, once the trend gained steam. I don't own a lot of Mario games, and the few I do, I tend to play fairly conservatively. I'm surprised they can be broken so vehemently and entertainingly. Now that the entire main series has been explored, now maybe we can move on to variants like Sonic ringless, Crash crateless, or Spyro 2 and 3 gemless. (BTW, Spyro 1 requires gem collection to open up most of the late-game levels, so a gemless run on that one's kind of a no-go.)
Oh! Wondrous video. I've recently gotten into watching coinless Mario videos and then eventually watching the RUclipsrs alot (Nico, Ceave, Mayro, etc) so its nice to have found this video.
Ceave may have been the vanguard of specifically Mario-oriented scripted challenge videos, but Gamechamp's VG Myths was going before those with other games, and Ceave credits him as one of the inspirations for his own coinless challenge runs. It just goes to show that presentation matters. Remember when Pannenkoek went viral in early 2016? That never would have happened if he hadn't decided to commentate (which he now regrets doing, sadly).
CeaveGaming is the reason the challenges are trending. He did a lot of Super Mario Maker content about limiting what you can do and then moved on to coinless and control challenges in other games, but he has been consistently been getting recommended. The comments are evidence enough because it’s all references to him
In my opinion, what really blew up this genre was game champs botw no climbing challenge. Then other channels started playing around with the idea and brought coinless runs into everyone’s recommended tab.
With coin challenges running out, I’ve seen people start to do directionless challenges. Can’t wait for every Mario game to get beaten without a single input.
Great topic for a great video! I sometimes watch some of them myself and you actually made me wonder why it got so popular as well! And since I really like UncommentedPannen's content, it's no wonder I got recommend those videos!
I feel like mentioning how GameChamp3000 making the 'Can You Beat Super Mario Odyssey Without Jumping' video and having that go viral really helped speed up the progression of the challenge runs getting popular in the community is important, I think it was the first mario challenge run to get insanely popular like they do now.
Hey R! Great to hear from you - I’m glad you liked this approach to the trend. The challenges are super interesting to me, so I hope to do more down the road

I know talked about how to the youtube algorithm helped out these style of videos but I’m also really curious on how you think “coinless” videos were promoted by the algorithm and why. Anyways glad to see another great video by you!
the main reason these videos have become so popular is because they are something new , i have seen all sorts of challenges , wether its final fantasy 10 no sphere grid , zelda 3 heart challenges or other stuff ,but most of them are meant to increase the difficulty due to the game becoming very easy the more hearts or strength you get , and if you play a game so many times you can beat it blindfolded , these challenges can give you a motivation the thing with all these coinless videos is just that they are fun to watch , thats really the main point , 100%ing a mario game isnt anything special , speedrunning isnt either anymore , so now people come up with new challenges ,and honestly, i never once tried avoiding a coin in mario world or mario bros 3 , so it also is something i wont instantly be able to tell if its possible or not , which makes it interesting to watch these videos , i can instantly tell if you could beat ocarina of time or twilight princess with 0 rupees (which for both is a no , as the deku shield and slingshot are required to proceed ) but these challenges actually are fun things that i couldnt just tell , because i never paid attention to coins in mario , i just picked them up while playing through the level
ive definitely been enjoying all the challenge videos, i just assumed that it suggested more coinless videos to me because im subbed to ceave and watched that when it came out but i didnt expect that he was more like the catalyst to start it all
The first of these challenges I saw was the other day: a Pacifist run of the original Super Mario. No killing (except for Bowser at 8-4) and no coins. I didn't know this challenge was over a decade old.
It's worth noting that the "scripted, narrated, edited challenge" format the Ceave introduced is largely based on previous challenge runs by Gamechamp3000, like BoTW without climbing. Look at the comments of his first challenge and they're mostly to that effect.
I actually first watched a video about super Mario odyssey without jumping, I watched that again a couple months later and then it started recommending ceave gaming stuff to me and I’ve been hooked ever since
I already saw you've been trying to join the Coinless community, but it didn't go very far. I'd love to see Coinless return, and if you want, I can make you a list of missing entries I would consider worthy. Since a lot of official games have been covered already, and Mayro and SK8ER BRUH opened the doors of fandom already, most of my list would be community entries with the corresponding links.
There are also many spin-offs of coinless that are on RUclips, such as Mario Odyssey without the left stick, or even your dodgeless run of Punch-Out Wii
You're right about the coin videos feeding into each other. First I found VGmyths, then Ceave, then Nicobbq, then Mayro, then Nathaniel Bundy.... and now YOU because you're talking about said videos lol
Trends are super powerful - and never underestimate the YT algorithm’s power to create trends out of thin air. Thanks for checking this one out, Mr. 2006
Too true, I watched Ceave’s video once it got big then started getting recommended self-imposed challenge videos for Mario games almost every time I came on RUclips.
Still waiting for a just highlights videos on coin-less Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, Super Mario World 2, Yoshi’s Island Ds, Yoshi’s New Island, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 3, Wario Land 2, 3 and 4 and shake it and more.
I feel like gamechamp deserves some more credit. While the original coinless runs existed before his videos, he got the "can you beat..." challenges popular, which I believe inspired ceaves coinless run.
It definitely did. Ceave’s video is categorized under the tag “VG Myths” - so I’d say inspiration is definitely there. But, as the video is about the progression of coinless videos in partcular - I’d say Ceave’s was the algorithm pick to start the trend. Thanks for bringing this up, Maragash!
Mayro played a much more important role in this. The structured video format was first done by mayro on multiple games before ceave’s video was released. Although he didn’t copy mayro’s idea, mayro was still the first big, structured format
I was suscribed to Mayro since the starts of all his SMG2 challenges, and Ceave for all his mechanics in SMM, moreless a year ago. Also, I was suscribed to Nathaniel Bandy well over 4-5 years ago.
Is it possible to watch RUclips without seeing a COINLESS video?

I've always been preferential to challenges like this over normal playthroughs, cause they bring an interesting spin to the game. I feel like there are two separate scenes to the challenge landscape, the RTA and the TAS/LOTAD. RTA stuff focuses more on the difficulty of a challenge and has less precise challenges (coinless/pointless/etc could likely be done much more easily in TAS), whereas the TAS/LOTAD stuff focuses on the absurd glitches required to beat a challenge and has weirder, more difficult challenges (The A Button Challenge - for both SM64 and MM - OOT doorless, 2 Pause and All Fairy Rewards No Human In Dungeon being great examples). I was waitin' for GC3K to show up in this video. Great video, though!
You didn't give mayro enough credit...he did a nsmbw coinless in june
There are also many spin-offs of coinless that are on RUclips, such as Mario Odyssey without the left stick, or even your dodgeless run of Punch-Out Wii
Why did they unlist the videos
Who???
@@gamermapper Mayro
You're right about the coin videos feeding into each other. First I found VGmyths, then Ceave, then Nicobbq, then Mayro, then Nathaniel Bundy.... and now YOU because you're talking about said videos lol
Trends are super powerful - and never underestimate the YT algorithm’s power to create trends out of thin air.
Thanks for checking this one out, Mr. 2006
@@skipthetutorial I'll keep a look out on your future videos. You earned a sub
There's no way this is more popular than the A button challenge.
Too true, I watched Ceave’s video once it got big then started getting recommended self-imposed challenge videos for Mario games almost every time I came on RUclips.
Been fun following this since the start
Incredible video dude now I understand everything
Glad to clear it up 👍 haha
Thanks for checking this one out, Jo!
Nice video, Summoning Salt!
@@skipthetutorial thanks for replying lol
Mayro played a much more important role in this. The structured video format was first done by mayro on multiple games before ceave’s video was released. Although he didn’t copy mayro’s idea, mayro was still the first big, structured format
I was suscribed to Mayro since the starts of all his SMG2 challenges, and Ceave for all his mechanics in SMM, moreless a year ago. Also, I was suscribed to Nathaniel Bandy well over 4-5 years ago.
Some people have been college students for a couple of decades.
I love this community, if I had a capture card. I would definitely make videos attempting challenges myself! :D

i had no idea about any of this until a few weeks ago when youtube was like
