  • On April 30, 2019, there was a shooting in a UNC Charlotte classroom. Two people died and four were injured. The following semester Dr. Frank Turek and Dr. Rice Broocks went to UNC to minister to the hurting students and to answer their questions. Here is Frank’s answer to a question about Satan which goes to the very heart of why there is evil at all.

    Probably one of the most difficult thing to understand and accept.
    But even though it's real tough to accept, God is right, he gives me freedom but also give freedom to "bad people", that's the only way love can exist, there must be a choice between good and evil. That's the whole point of our short life on earth

    • @amethyst7468
      @amethyst7468 2 года назад +5

      When you have a choice between two actions and thats it, that's a choice. But when you have a choice where one option is followed by an eternity of torture, that is not a choice; it's coercion.

    • @steven7846
      @steven7846 2 года назад

      @@amethyst7468 Well if you try to follow God's words because you're afraid of what's going to happen to you, when you face him on judgement day, after your death, that's actually a very good thing ! It means you still have a soul and a conscience. Just understand that people who commit crimes, or wrong actions, and evil everyday, even Satan and his fallen angels who do know what's waiting for them still sin and throw the finger at God. They don't care about going to Hell forever because they hate the light, the truth and the love.
      May be at the moment you think God is bad and cruel but I assure you that you're wrong.
      Just remember how angry you were at your father when he would forbid from doing certain thing to protect you. You were angry because you were not experienced enough, and didn't have the knowledge to understand.
      God is always right, he never makes mistakes and all the things he does not want us to do, it's mainly to protect our soul and well being. There's a lot of things that are beyond our reach, which we can simply not understand and that's where we have to trust him. At some point "coercion" either transform into "trust" and "faith" or "anger".
      I hope you will make the right choice, but rest assured being afraid of God is a good thing. I was scared of my father as well who loved me very much when I was a kid, and with time I understood it was good. He educated me very well so that I was able to behave well and thrive in my adult life. I'm a father now and I show love to my kid but also authority ! You cannot raise a child without rules to respect. It's the same relationship with God. The only difference is God never makes mistakes, he's the perfect father, but we do !
      The moment in your life when you are not scared anymore about the consequences of your actions on earth, then you're lost !

      Lucifer and Adam both were created as a possibility (superposition as they say in quantum physics). It’s the true freedom both were given from God and the measurement of the actions done with that freedom that will collapse such possibility into reality either as good or evil.
      The real question should be instead “ Why did God then create creatures with possibilities when He can have creatures without them?” The answer is creation without such free will would have been meaningless. Only with contrasts that value is seen and appreciated. Fish for example doesn’t recognize the concept of water for all of its life lived in one. How lucky (or unlucky depending on your measurement) for the homo sapiens to be chosen for such a heavy task, to witness and marvel on this astounding creation of God and to do so out of our own free will. I appreciate how Frank focuses on cause-and-effect. Scripture attest to the ultimate “cause” of “evil” is the Creator - God, Himself.
    Is. 45:7 (KJV) says
    I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things
    This begs the question, “Why?” Why would a gracious, loving, compassionate and “just” God “create evil” as, “Thus sayeth the Lord declares,” be both known and understood” by His creatures for who He is and what He is like.
    Hence, how could we know, appreciate and value His character had not we were first subjected to injustice / evil. Consequently, so we then “can choose,” to “embrace freedom & grace.” Having first been subjected “to a lie,” which leads to shame and disgrace?

Second, a more detailed explanation that includes more than why God allows Satan to blind but why evil(and it’s manifestation, sin) is allowed to exist in God’s plan for His creation. Evil exists for several reasons: 1. Free will…God wants us to love and choose Him, not robots forced. IF there is no evil, there is no choice, 2. Acquisition of knowledge of God’s plan and divine knowledge…if there is no sin or evil, knowing right or wrong cannot be obtained. 3. Instructions to Angels (Ephesians 3:10, 1Peter 1:12) angels learn from observing humanity…they cannot learn good and evil if there is no evil allowed as an active principle in the universe. 4. To demonstrate God’s hatred for evil. 5. God will judge all evil in his time. It was and is necessary for God in omniscience NOT to just know about the principle of evil rather, God willed evil to be an active presence in the universe for both angels and mankind. 5. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, as a manifestation of and an exercise of divine Grace. For eternity past, Angels witnessed and knew God’s love, wisdom, power and glory but they had never seen God’s grace…they had no knowledge and understanding of God’s goodness to the undeserving. By allowing evil and sin to exist, God could demonstrate both to angelic beings and to humanity grace, which opened the way of exercising grace to those who because of their sin, deserved only His wrath.
      Lastly, your question reaches to the divine and perhaps we will not truly understand this side of heaven….similar to the question: “how could a powerful angel, Lucifer created perfect and in the perfect environment of heaven, decide for evil and rebel against God? With Adam/Eve in the garden, they were influenced by Satan….no such explanation is given for the original sin of Satan. The silence of God should be respected.

    It's so interesting that humans are redeemable but fallen angels are not. What Frank said makes sense. Maybe they already had that chance. They were in the full presence of God and got to make that decision. Humans are judged based on faith/belief/hope in Jesus. (2) God did not create the devil as evil from the beginning, the devil made himself evil after being created perfect. (3) The devil convinced one third of his co-angels to be like him, rebellious to God's ways. (4) God created man to replace the fallen angels. (5) God allowed man to contend with Satan now so the rebellion will never happen again in the future. This shows how God values freewill, viewing men as beings like him, not robots to play with.

    In the timeless eternity past, Lucifer was created by the holiness of the omnipotent and the all-knowing God as the highest of all the angels in heaven. Lucifer was then the light bearer and the seal of perfection in wisdom and beauty. Because of his pride he wanted also to be worship as God. So his pride became the foundation of his sinfulness and spiritual flaws, which was new then in the heavely kingdom of holiness of God. Lucifer was then able to pull 1/3 of angels in heaven on his side. Then there was a war in heaven, Revelation 12:7-10 of the Bible in which Lucifer and his angels failed their rebellion against God and all His angels. In fact; the revolution in heaven in timeless eternity past became the eternal and the spiritual foundation of the irreconcilable tree of the knowledge of good and evil and right from wrong. In fact, Lucifer was then curse to eternally and spiritually become Satan, the adversary and all his angels were then also curse to eternally and spiritually become demons. The cursed to Lucifer surely did not come from the all-knowing will and wisdom of the holiness of God but rather according to wicked, lawless, unjust, sinful and spiritual imperfections of Satan, the foolish and worthless devil himself. In other words, all the holiness of God had to to do was cursed Satan and all his demons according to what they all really wanted to become.
    When all living things and man were all flawlessly created by the holiness of the omnipotent God on this earth, Satan and all his demons were all here already watching with envy and jealousy why .man was created by the holiness of God in His own image and likeness, Genesis 1:26-27 of the Bible. Adam and Eve our first parents were then both in the Garden of Eden within the flawless physical and spiritual environment of the eternal wisdom in the tree of life in which suffering, sin, and death were then surely non-existence on this paradise earth way back then. After the flawless creations of all living things and man as recorded in Chapter 1 and 2 of the book of Genesis, this was then also what Satan was waiting for since he knew very well that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was planted with the tree of life in the midst of the garden of Eden. It was recorded in Chapter 3 of the book of Genesis in which Sstan tempted, lied, deceived, corrupted and misled Eve first and then Adam in which they both willingly had chosen to fall to sin in front of the holiness of God in which He had also no other altetnative but to curse Adam and Eve for the fact that He indeed already eternally, spiritually and flawlessly measured, separated, concluded, prejudged, justified, and prewritten the irreconcilable tree of the knowledgd of good and evil in the timeless eternity past in His heavenly kingdom in front of Satan, the adversary. Therefore, man was eternally and spiritually cursed as well as the ground where all other living things also basically originated from, Genesis 3:16-24 of the Holy Bible. In fact, the flawless physical and spiritual environments in the eternal wisdom of the tree of life was then abruptly changed from the flawless environments of the tree of life into the irreconcilable tree of the knowledge of good and evi that now also powered the wisdom of what is right from wrong, truth from a lie, morality from immorality, justice from injustice, peace from war, righteousness from unrighteousness and etc., etc., etc... Ever since the fall of man up to present we are indeed still within the parameters of the irreconcilable tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which are also powering the wisdom of life and death in fallen ecosystem of our sinful world from generation to geneeation up to the present time.Thsnks

      If the Catholic hope goes unfulfilled, then it does look like some people are created just to sin and go to hell. This is where we need to take a serious look at justice: Hell is just punishment for freely committed sins. Creating someone you know is going to sin, reject you, and thus deserves punishment, is a perfectly just loop. Being created takes no responsibility away from freely committed sins. Would it be better for those people to not have been created? Not really. There is no hope for someone who will never reject sin. Never creating them doesn't help them, and at any rate, they logically do not deserve that help.
      I think those people serve as a bad example to the ones who end up accepting God. And they can curse their own existence and the fact that they're only there for other people, but they still DID freely reject God. Foreknowledge is very different from pre-determination.

    Why did Satan choose to rebel though? Look throughout history: the only time rebellions take place is if a group of people believe that they are being mistreated in some way. Sure it can be a way to gain power but only because the rebels believed that the society they are rebelling against abused power. And if heaven is supposed to be the model society that everyone wants to be a part of, maybe we should ask why such a revolt took place there.

      The Book of Genesis and Enoch tell it perfectly. The Angels wanted what they couldn’t have by God’s will, the daughters of men. They saw Women as beautiful creatures unlike anything in heaven, that’s why the serpent went to Eve. When some of the fallen tricked the women and had sex with them, they cursed themselves and God had to punish them. So you’re right, the angels there felt mistreated, but only 1/3 of them felt that way AFTER someone (Satan more than likely) inspired them to take matters into their own hands. But why take the side of the lesser? If they were truly being mistreated and were greater moral beings, why is everything having to do with them about evil? Why is it when God gave Satan control over most of the world he didn’t use his power for good? Satan rebelled because he wanted things his way and unfortunately all he wanted was evil and pleasure combined. Satan didn’t come to serve man, he came to enslave after he lost the war

However, you must look at the full context. It wasn't just because the rich had so much, but because the poor had so little and the rich were flaunting their wealth as if to say "look at me: I'm so rich and powerful while you're poor and weak." That couldn't happen in heaven...or could it? Maybe God puts himself on a higher pedestal than everyone else in heaven and that may have caused a revolt. Saying that something is scientific doesn't make it so. Science is not a thing, rather it is an analytical approach. If one wishes to state that their analyses is more verifiable mechanically and that the opposition is purely anecdotal and based on ancient literature, so be it. However it does not make the former superior especially if no conclusion has been rendered and no proof has been forthcoming. And we ALL are deserving of eternal punishment in hell because sin is so serious (sin is evil and it is the cause of all pain, death, and suffering). And that’s why Jesus suffered soooo much for us, and that’s why He died on the cross for ALL our sins (past, present, AND future sins) and rose from the dead 3 days later! Jesus did all this because He loves us sooooo much, you can’t even fully comprehend it! And you may have eternal life with Him if you repent (to change your mind about Jesus, to believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord our God) and have faith in Him, then you will be saved! (Let’s make it clear that being a good person WILL NOT get you into Heaven! You can only be saved by the grace God will show you, if you repent and have faith in Jesus and in what Jesus did for us on the cross and that He rose from the dead 3 days after He died for us! ONLY THEN, will you will be saved)! And do not wait because you do not know when you will die (sit and think deeply about that. You have NO CLUE when you will die! Today could be your last day, tonight could be your last night. You can die in your sleep or even in the next hour!) Im saying all this because I want you to realize how urgent and important it is to have Jesus! If you have Jesus, you will NEVER have to worry! You won’t have to worry about school, family problems, life, or EVEN DEATH because you will have the LORD your GOD, RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE, EVERY SINGLE DAY, EVERY SINGLE HOUR, EVER SINGLE MINUTE and EVERY SINGLE SECOND of your life! Perhaps the answer is in the parable of the prodigal son. Who the father in that parable? God the Father. Who is the older son? Who is the younger son? Who do we call the son of God?
    Why are there 2 sons of God in the parable?
    If one of the sons represents Jesus, which would he be?
    Jesus is the younger son. Who then is the older son? Lucifer.
    Once you see this, it explains the whole meta narrative of the Bible. We have a battle between 2 brothers.
    And we also understand why God puts up with Lucifer for so long. He is not just an angel, he is a son.
    But in the end, if the son does not repent, he gets cast into the lake of fire.

      That said, I still don't see why it (free moral agency) must exist. It seems to me like a terrible mistake. But God would rather watch the tragic horror of human history, as we know it, slowly unfold than to have a universe free of the power to choose evil. Which option seems preferable to you?

    • @amethyst7468
      @amethyst7468 11 месяцев назад

      @daydreamer9469
      Yes, I get that, but that is not what I'm talking about. You see, loving God and acting morally do not necessarily come together. On the one hand, one may love God but act in a harmful way, sometimes even in his name. On the other hand, someone may not believe in God yet act the most righteously they can.
      And so, God could have created a world where humans did not have the ability to want to sin. And, in this world, people could choose whether to be with God or not. In this case, being with God doesn't grant eternal life and being away from him doesn't damn you to eternal torment. So, his goal of giving us free choice is even more pronounced in this scenario where there is no incentive behind either option, rendering the aforementioned choice more free than it is in the current uphold system.

      Let’s say you have a choice to eat an apple or not:
      If God knows you’re going to eat the apple, are you physically capable of not eating it?
      If the answer is yes, you’ve negated God’s omniscience/sovereignty.
      If the answer is no, you’ve negated free will (and the ability to choose the savior or not).
      If the answer is God knows but you don’t, therefore there is free will, that’s not actually free will: it’s the illusion of free will.
      If all actions are known ahead of time (by God), then everything is predestined and everyone who ends up in hell does so as a result of actions they never really had the choice but to commit (which would make God a tyrant).
      Also, I’ve heard some say that God wills himself not to know our choices. That however, means God willfully negated his own omnipotence: if you don’t know everything then you also are not all powerful (knowledge=power). It would also negate his omnipresence because you can’t know everything if you’re not everywhere…
      God, as described in the Bible, literally makes no sense at all.

    Here’s a crucial question I’ve been looking for the answer to: “What is “good”? Does it truly have an objective definition that is not circular in the form of “my god is good, and good is whatever my god says or does?” To define evil as the opposite and absence of good, “good” would have to have some qualifiable or quantifiable aspect, the absence of which at least statistically reliably leads to evil. Defining “good” also has huge ramifications on our human legislation and morality; presupposing we know “objective good” means that we can make perfect laws if we wish. Is it possible? Now, the problem to all of this is that the deity in Abrahamic religions continues to take the position of incomprehensibility to avoid questioning. If we cannot actually comprehend its intentions, how are we to verify if it is objectively good, especially if the definition of “objective good” depends on it circularly like the religious say?

      18thletter No because by the standard of creation: the created one owes its existence to the creator. So therefore a moral obligation is automatically placed on that created one from the moment it’s created which is: to submit to and honor his creator. Meaning it is impossible for God to create any being exactly like himself, because God does not have that moral obligation since He is not created. The creator is in a different class of His own, far superior and far more glorified than anything because He transcends everything, He owes His existence to no one.
