There's a lot to be learned and internalized from Peter Steele's theatrical vocal approach. He goes in and out of different characters sometimes line by line. He'll brood... He'll yelp and yell... He'll SCREAM, and then switch on a dime with remarkable composure.
We would do well to take this free and abandoned approach to our own voice... Especially, to start with, in a live setting!
We get to study a classic live Type O Negative live performance from 1995 in this video. Enjoy! ...And then try some things with your own voice!
Peter Steele is proably one of the greatest and most underated vocalists ever
Ever
agreed
Nooo!! Type O' Negative, Dynamo 1995, I was in the crowd!! Can't believe Chris picked a concert where I was, more than 26 years ago... Missing you Peter, RIP
That is COOL!!!!!
OMG! Can't believe you did a vid on Peter! TON is one of my favorite bands ever! Major props for this one!
Anyone watching this definitely needs to check out ALL of Bloody Kisses and October Rust!
Yay! Enjoy!!
@@chrisliepe I love the way you break everything down to make it easier to understand how singers approach their sound. Thanks for the tips, and I appreciate everything you do for the community!
So awesome to see that Pete gets some love here, huge Type O negative fan …🖤💚 would love to see a video on Ville Valo from HIM, the greatest inspiration for my own singing 🤟
HIM never gets enough love these days, such a great band and ville is my number one inspiration for my singing as well
Yes, a video about him would be great
Him and Ville Valo would be worthy target for analysis video. Extra points for picking a song / video in Finnish language.
Ville is amazing!
HIM are cheesy af
Hell yes! Thrilled to find people keeping Peter alive! One of my favorite bands ever, thank you.
We’ll never let our brother die 🖤
Is it just me or does Peter Steele sometimes sound like a spooky Frank Sinatra? Love it!
no! Frank Sinatra sounds like peter!
Dude I love Peter Steele, his voice isn't just fucking low, but his tone is so damn specific
And controlled. People with a bass/baritone bass range almost never actually know HOW to sing. Singers in general rarely know how to sing anymore so the exceptions with actual nice voices are going to stick out.
Peter Steele doesn`t sing in the lower larynx position! He is just singing with NEUTRAL and RELAXED larynx position and that`s all! That`s why You can`t get lower notes by you`r self! Start with relaxed larynx and more chest resonance (Peter Steele has a lot of it).
Holy sh*t, man, you're great. First time watching your channel and I wasn't expecting this kind of video.
Man i really love this channel, i’ve been trying to sing like peter for 2 years now and I’m honestly getting really close to it.
This is one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever come across for improvement.
Definitely a channel worth searching through!
Hey Chris, been a fan of the channel for a few years now. Your method of analyzing the voice in the context of others is very effective. I got a degree in voice, but I feel my voice really has exploded in the past few years after I drifted away from classical singing and moved into your methods. Every voice is different, what works for some might not work for others. Glad I explored. Cheers!
The one and only peter steele. Haven't watched the video yet but pretty sure you're gonna be amazed by the man RIP
Thank you for all the instruction you provide. I am a bass and chose to start my vocal journey trying to cover Peter. I just made a video if you wanna see an attempt. Peter was so damn good.
thank you a million times! for making this video on Pete Steele. Love this guy and the whole band. When i saw them live in 1999 the bass low frequency output was like nothing else. And it actually made you move backwards and forwards. Even standing right at the very back of the venue. It was like nothing else... i guesss by that stage in the band's touring carrer... they had it all figured out. Because the entire stage was 1 person high wall of guitar and bass cabs. And like... you'd think that would cause some issues or muddiness? Or get in the way of clarity? Well it turned out not a problem! it was like the perfect sound of your dreams as good or better than any album. And I have never heard anything so amazing since (as a complete sound including the very lowest frequencies bass wise). And i cannot really fathom how many real watts of power it take to drive that much bass. The organ player, the guitars the drums all of them were so amazing. It therefore felt a shame they could not continue the band without Pete. Given how all were so very much talented. And they had all developed so well the live performance.
Anyhow.... that particular unforgettable experience was not actually to do with his amazing great vocals performance. As being examined here. His vocals are very creatively put together, it just seems so original both on Bloody Kisses and October Rust albums. Now I did have to get rid of all those short in-between tracks. Because they really didn't do anything for me at all. But the actual song songs are amazing. Timeless and forever, they will never get old. And a beautiful snapshot in time, to look back at those (90s era) period. Outside of those 2 main albums... their later albums by comparison do not seem to have nearly so many original songs. But there are a couple here and there. I particularly love the most 'Creepy Green Light', 'Anesthesia' and 'I don't Wanna Be Me'. Which really stand out and feel as good as the earlier albums.
Anyhow thanks for your insights picking this one apart. It feels to me like there most 'classic' OG early single. The one that always got played a lot on MTV. But I really hope you can do more on Pete Steele in future! Anything really. Would be fantastic love it. Made my day.
Oh shit, Christmas came early this year! Great voice, great dude, miss him. Thank you for this Chris!
It is so great an amazing to watch and learn from all of your videos. The way you describe, and demonstrate to perfection, which you communicate so perfectly for singers to place into their own voice. It is a singers treasure.
Thank you, Chris, for doing this video! I requested Peter Steele in a comment recently and just a few days later you delivered. \m/
Awesome video! I always thought the guitarist was singing the high parts/screams live.
"Devillll's Butt!!" - Chris Liepe, 2021
at 2:35 😜
As usual, excellent! I really appreciate your videos - the best. If you could do a session about Tom Waits, comparing the early years with his well known later voice - it would be amazing😊🎶
Excellent observation on Pete's voice, great job sir. ToN never dies!
I'm such a fan ofType O Negative!!! Awesome video! Pete Steele 💚💚💚🖤🖤🖤
At first i thought the whole dying cat thing was stupid but once i tried it it made it so much easier practicing getting up there. Great vid man!
Would love to see a breakdown of Miss Murder - AFI. Especially the bridge when he does the fry part into the two different screams, always thought that was super interesting. Great video as always!
Davey havok is such an underrated vocalist
Thank you for the Type O reaction!
Wow! Mid-watch comment - that high B scream is crazy!!! Thats scorched earth territory for my own voice 🔥
I call those cracks his tiny wails to add a sense desperation to the feel of the song or line.
The guitarist Kenny Hickey has a couple side projects where he’s the Lead Singer. You should give Seventh Void or Silvertomb a listen for his vocals!
Kenny, the guitarist, is an amazing baritone singer. Definitely doesn't get the credit he deserves.
OH MY GOD, YES! Wonderful, unique artist and band. Everything about them is so peculiar.
I also love how in more recent albums his voice intertwined with Kenny's (guitarist) higher pitch screams.
Kenny is the guitar player.. I think Mickey was from the the Monkees...ha
@@adamp6744 I stand corrected. The full name's actually Kenny Hickey, my brain is failing me
Awesome video! Its so sad that Peter Steele is no longer with us. Btw please don't take Our Lord's Name in vain. Have a good day man. PEACE!
@@RapidCycling07 I know you asked nicely and I am really grateful for that, but to be honest I am really against the prohibition of words and sounds. Words on their own are harmless and I find it arrogant to think that a divine being is preoccupied with what I type in a youtube comment. Still I'm sorry if I offended you, truly. I'm a bit susceptible on the subject since I'm from Rome, the catholic capital city, and I've been told what to say and what not to say way too many times.
Never got into this band but hes got a great voice. Cool to see you using your lower range. I dont think Ive really seen jt yet.
Love this video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Chris, id love to here a breakdown on Glenn Danzigs vocal🤘
That guy's pitch seemed a lot more natural and free compared to the artists I normally listen to, but it weirdly didn't bother me. I thought it was kinda refreshing. Thanks for pointing out the chorus on the bass, I've been too scared to but effects on bass, but its nice to hear it sounding cool.
What a legend! Thanks for the analysis!
Hey man, absolutely love your vids. Your analysis is as good as any I’ve seen on the internet, especially for unique screaming/yelling vocals. I’d love to see what you’ve got to say about Spencer Chamberlain from Underoath, personally my fave vocal performance of his is Returning Empty Handed.
Loved this. Peter Steele was a vocal beast! Have you done any videos of Mike Patton?
I have! Search the in the style of playlist for Patton and tons of others!
More than 2 years passed. Maybe thinking about creating new updated video about Type O Negative singing analysis?
RIP Peter Steele 💚🖤💚
A video on Spencer Charnas would be sick, he's a really well rounded vocalist with great cleans like in Hip to be Scared and screams like in funeral derangements
Great bass guitar tone too.
Luv him! Impressive vocalist, cool band!!!
Thanks, today I have a new lesson : a good tone is a Dynamic tone. (and it's not only ment in a Volum way of dynamics)
Thanks for a lot of good Video leassons👍
I have been waiting literal months for this, Peter Steele is one of the most influential musicians in my life, in both bass and vocals. May I also recommend Ryan McCombs of soil and drowning pool?
I wasn’t a fan of these guys till now, thanks for this
Great stuff! Side note: check out “my heart, your hands” by a band called Dommin. They’re like Type O meets Chris Isaak- great vocalist.
Happy Birthday to the Green Man. RIP
Hey Chris, can you please make a video showing us how to sing like Rod Stewart?
Yeah ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 man 🤘🏻 you are doing all my favorites singers !!!! Thanks for that and your lessons are the best !!!!! Do you know Ryan McCombs the singer of soil and he was on drowning pool too... If you haven't done anything on him I'll love to know who he does a rusty singing almost growling but without growling I think it's very interesting. Anyway keep up the amazing work you do man !!!! 🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 You definitely always teach me something new !!!!!
He is the one.
I was waiting for this ngl
OMG I LOVE YOU! :D 💚
If you sing the "now" deep part with a slight head voice, no throat & use the front of your face where the front of the apples of your cheeks are you can do it.
I'm a woman & it worked great & in perfect pitch with him!
Great video as always, Chris! If possible, please try to analyse Kim Carlsson's vocals, he manifests quite some interesting sounds with his voice. The live performance of ''Gratoner'' by Hypothermia could be a nice material to utilise (particularly the Under the Razors Fest one). Thank you!
"Fake news annauncer" voice! Holy sh** that was an awesome immitation and an idea. Now I'm gonna speak loudly some fake news in my car just to exercise it. And I live in Poland so I can just say whatever the National/Government television station TVP says, so it's kinda easier here!
haha... glad you found that one helpful! I've been muttering like a fake announcer since I filmed this video last week and it's just plain fun :) !!
That's Kenny Hickey on the guitar
Amazing Chris!!!! Great video and of course Peter is one of my favorites metal singers. I don't know if you do any review of another vocal god Devin Townsend, he is...a being of another planet. Best Regards 💪😉
The Barry White of metal
Crazy
Hey Chris! Im loving the videos! Do you think you can do one on goth/post punk singers like Ian Curtis or Wayne Hussey from The Mission? That would be so killer!
The Cinnamon Girl cover on Howard Stern; amazing
would you ever do a Danzig break down?
you gotta do a break down of eskimo callboy - rehab vocals ....and ghostkid supernova
The key thing to remember is that hes 6’8 and probably has about 2-4 maybe extra inches of throat to use for vocals plus his bigger lungs. Unless youre at least somewhat close to his size you most likely wont get the same or even close vocal tone as him. Ive been trying for a year or two using this video multiple times to try for it. Hes also in his thirties and im 19 so the age and tuning of his vocal chords probably dont help but im also about 5 inches shorter. Im only fortunate to even actually get any bassiness due to my abnormal lungs. Still a great video and singer tho
Oh wow how didnt i find it earlier
hohoho here we go!
To sing this style get your vocal fry going with lots of air, open throat, and practice RISING the lynx as you go lower to counteract excessive lowering with exercises like nay nay nay... This is how I would teach getting this sound.
Do ICS Vortex
So, the question is: Was he a bass or baritone? Bass to my ears, since I heard him in the early-mid 90's.
Ed: Great channel, btw :)
timbre wise... I think prolly bass
@@chrisliepe Yes, no doubt. Keep it up, Chris 🤟
Can you do a video about how to sing like Bryan Adams?
You need to review their song “Hey Pete” from slow deep and hard.
someone was prolly swollowng peter in the dark !!!!
olololololol
olo
Great choice of video Chris - any interest in doing a similar artist like Danzig?
🖤
This is low 03:54? Hahahaha is actually high every tenor is capable
❤️
I love you
Study Danzig, eat lot's of meats and processed foods, get constipation, do a track on the toilet and you can nail this guy! Lol
Try Nettie
I love singing the intro to that one
ruclips.net/video/UPxFbxFnjEg/видео.html
Some of his voice live, is being severely drunk. Don't get me wrong, one of the top musical influences in my voice and instrument playing. One of the best vocalists I've ever heard. Just wanted to throw that in there for context.
Also, check out the bands Dreadful Shadows, The Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy...
Mike Kerr Royal blood vocal analysis
I have a question: Is it about a Fake News Reporter or a reporter reporting Fake News? :D
jokes aside, great video... i learned a lot
Both haha... Just don't spread the fake news :)
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 137
Nice new profile pic btw!
good lesson man , how about Nick Cave? another ELvis fan Hahahah
You should react to Till Lindemann from Rammstein
Gotta get some John Cooper - Skillet at some point.
Helter skelter/ Paul McCartney’s heavier voice
God, I miss Pete.
Если послушать ещё внимательнее, то можно понять, что это не Питер делает скрим, а его партнёр на гитаре. Всё очень просто - у Питера бас-баритон, а у его друга - выше гораздо голос.
thats my uncle
You could tell chris is real into it when he gets a bit like The Charismatic Voice XD
Peter Steele was definitely a great vocalist - prefer Carnivore to Type O Negative. Maybe it was the fans though, too 'Anne Rice' for my taste...
First!
