Funny thing - Dracula actually did sing with a metal band. Actor Christopher Lee (Dracula being his most famous role) put out several metal albums. Apparently he was a very talented opera singer - but he never fully realized his dream, due to WW2.
Great video, he was awesome and died way too young, one of my faves ever, and I’m so happy to have seen him live from the front row a couple of times in the 90s and beyond.
I thought of a few Finnish bands you could review: Sentenced (with Ville Laihiala), H.I.M (much less heavier), The 69 Eyes, Sonata Arctica, Tarja (she is an opera singer as yourself but sang in Nightwish). Also not to be a pain but Peter Steele was a Goth, not an emo 🖤
@@Warghoul you lucky ghoul. I am still crying over his passing.
The best song from type 0 negative for you to watch is Christian woman. Look it up.
Saw Type O with Pantera on Far Beyond Driven tour. Peter wrapped up his set by saying the funniest thing I’ve heard at a concert: “For those who hate us, this is our last song. For those who like us, this last song is 30 minutes long!”… I instantly became a fan.
I would commit such evil to witness that concert first hand
😂
Damn... I bet that was a bad ass show. Two of my favorite bands!
Let us not forget Kenny silver. Tonight, you Stay at kennys.
Hahahahhahah
"Steele is known as The Green Man because when he worked for the Parks Department, he wore green uniform and rode green garbage truck, people called him that as well as by Type O fans. And green is his favorite color and is the reason for the theme color of the band. whom he also formed." the answer to the question about band's love for the colour green. You appreciate Type O Negative and you like The 7th Guest. That's very close to perfection
I thought he was green because how he felt after a few 8 balls 🤔 😂 😳 😅 I love ❤ him
Dropping the 7th Guest reference was rather esoteric even for pc gamers, respekt
He also had green eyes.😊🤘👍
I guess that's what inspired the song Green Man? lol
She is truly amazing
It’s interesting (and sad) that we lost one of the tallest singers (Steele 6’8”) and one of the shorter singers (Dio 5’4”) months apart. Not to mention, both had very distinct vocal styles.
Right?! I was devastated when they both passed.
Sad and tragic losses, both. LOVE both of those guys.
Now I can't help but imagine a collab between the both of them. That'd be awesome.
That's true. Which goes to confirm that size doesn't matter... 😁
BLACK, BLACK, BLACK, BLACK, NUMBER OOOOOOOOOOONE.
YEAH! ❤
To hear Peter's lowest register, find the song "Nettie". For a great song, hell, take your pick. Wolf Moon stands out, as does September Sun.
Great picks!
So does haunted
Yes!
I would add 'Be my druidess' to the mix.
I love Nettie so much. And Electrocute too.
Nettie, anesthesia is another great one.
Elizabeth: OMG, I bet his vocal tract is huge!
Other girls: 👀
Yes, according to the Playgirl spread he did, Peter Steele did indeed habe an enormous... vocal tract.
😂😂😇🥰
😂 shiet
@@DeaconBlues117 his... vocal tracts... go an own name of their own... Pepe... Pete's Pe*is.. for what reason ever...

"His vocal tract must be very long" - should we tell her about his appearance in Playgirl magazine?!
Exactly what I was thinking!😄
Ahaha omg! xD
I don't think she could handle it. But it would make for an entertaining video. Lol
YES!
She knows 😂
Pete drank heavily because he was actually shy about performing in front of a crowd, so his vocals live arent usually to good compared with the studio.
Agreed, you can definitely hear the slurred speech in this performance.
They were good early on in their career but I think he might be drunk in this one because he's singing like Elmer Fudd.
@@wakawakawilly9365 Well, they were good early on in the set, before he got that 3rd or 4th bottle of wine in him.
He once said he drank 4 bottles before the show, 4 more on stage, & 4 more after the show.Ya, I guarantee his vocals were sub par at that gig.
He has a great voice
And his rifts are great
R.I.P. Peter Steele. He deserves much more attention.
Novel ahead.
I was one of the lucky few to follow them from way back. I saw them every time they came to my state driving hundreds of miles just to see the next show. I met and hung out with them several times and they were all amazing and wonderful people and i miss them all dearly.
Peter was a huge guy. 6'8" and had a really deep chest and wide shoulders. When he talked his voice resonated so deeply that you could feel it all through your body. It tickled your ears and it was almost hard to understand him because of the crazy deep timbre. It was like he had a thunderstorm inside him. I had my arm around him when he was talking and it was so mesmerizing, like holding a tiger purring. I remember being fascinated at how big his hands were as he held my sharpie to sign everyone's autographs.
He intentionally used my marker because a security guard was harassing me. He told the guy i could stay with him until he was finished with it. So i stood right next to him while he signed autographs. Funny story, someone brought him the playgirl centerfold to to sign, dick side up and he tells me, "pfft, look what they brought me to sign." and here i am standing there with the real thing about chest level only inches away😳. All i could say was, "...oh...". I had 3 of my own copies at home. Jesus, did we laugh over that.
He gave me an enormous hug before getting back on the bus to leave, lifting me right off the ground. In my boots i was 6 foot. He towerd over me. I don't think my feet touched the ground the whole way back to my car. I'll never forget that night.
I almost missed the show because i had parked in a place where they needed me to move my car. The concert was over capacity and the fuckers refused to let me back in after i moved my car. Everything i had was inside with my boyfriend, even my glasses. I was really worried i would miss them because i had to move during intermission and they were about to come on next. I walked to the back of the club and saw the big tour buses. I just held my head high and walked between them towards the back door like i belonged there. I figured I'd have to hash it out with the security at the back door. As i got up to the front of the bus a bunch of people started coming out and i kind of just fell in with them. I couldn't really see well but no one seemed to notice i was there. We all went in through the back door and the group i was with turned right... Right onto the stage. 😂 I walked in with the band! I just headed straight and out on the floor. It was surreal. The security from the front spotted me after the show started and took my camera (that they let me in with) and i found out he destroyed it when i went to pick it up after the show. He was the same douche that Peter told to piss off. I'm pretty sure Peter saw him take my camera as i was right in front of the stage.
I was devastated when i heard Peter died. Nothing has been the same since. I haven't been to any other concert since. May Peter R.I.P.
I'm so glad you enjoyed his music! It was sweet seeing the same excitement i felt when i first heard them over 30 years ago. Watch more.
I'm not going to lie, I think you should cover the entire "October Rust" album. Your reactions are priceless, and watching your reaction is like rediscovering Type O all over again!
Pete was the Barry White of metal :)
The Barry White of metal. That’s genius!
@@arnieslab it fits lol
Amin ....TON forever 🍷
October Rust is a flawless album !!!!
I concur with this statement
Yes Peter is all natural 6’8” black hair and vampire like teeth, he just kinda came that way. He did lift weights though. The voice difference you’re noticing is that he had debilitating stage fright and actually openly admitted that he had to drink quite a bit to make himself go on stage every single time.
But I’ve been all the watching all reaction videos I can find to Type O Negative the last 2 days (it’s not like there’s hundreds) and I’ve noticed something in the reactions. There’s something about his voice and him in general (possibly his size combined with cheekbones and jawline) that automatically appeals to women. It’s like our hindbrain is going “alpha mate! Go retrieve! Get stool or climb him if necessary”. I see it change every woman’s face the moment they either see him fully or hear him sing, and I’m totally not exempt. It’s so weird and hilarious, it makes me think of a cavewoman brain. “He make good hunter 🤔”
Quite a bit? Peter drank himself to death. His own words: "my stage fright got sometimes so bad that I drank four bottles before, four bottles during and four bottles after the gig" for clarification not beer wine bottles, alcohol of one bottle of wine equals 3 beer. So imagine drinking 30 to 35 cans of beer one day. Even if you are woman this would make 15 to 17 cans of beer
I'm not normally into 'alpha males' but I make an exception for Peter Steele. He's irresistable.
@@MichaTheLight Not really; he died of a heart attack as a result of diverticulitis, which is a disease of the lower colon. I also have it, and I'm teetotal. He was clean and sober when he died.
The whole band was gigantic iirc like all over 6'
@@vermilliongecko I actually knew that but the cause of the heart failure wasn’t found and made public till later (untreated diverticulitis > sepsis > heart failure) so COD was a little complicated for people who don’t know medical stuff well and it had absolutely nothing to do with drugs or alcohol. Could have happened to anyone who didn’t get their gut pain checked.
You'll have to give the studio version a try. It's a whole different vibe. Slower tempo and just.... better. I normally prefer live over studio but this is an exception.
Yeah. Their live recordings are sadly all a mess. Poor quality sound. The music videos are much more acoustically pleasant. Also agree that the tempo and how it's sung is better.
Agree it feels a bit rushed for the vibe of the song. Studio version feels the right pace. I bet thru playing this song over and over nightly they picked up the pace, I would understand that.
All of this.

@@anthonygreen6219 yeah, this song and others from bloody kisses live in '94 was a pure dream. Even a year and a half later on October Rust tour the feeling had changed for worse...
My first thought when I saw the thumbnail "Oh here we go again, Peter seduces from beyond the grave." One of the best voices and humans ever in metal.
I enjoyed watching you speak about Peter Steele's vocals and I loved how you appreciated it and understood the depth And meanings! There has never been or ever will be a vocalist or person like Peter! RIP PETER💚
More type o negative reactions please they were the most underrated band of the last 20 years
Yesss!!! I AGREE!!!!
Still waiting for her to go over their cover of "Summer Breeze" as far as uniqueness goes in vocals
About the green coloring: I imagine the coloring had to do with Peter Steel. Peter worked for the Parks Department and the kids would call him him the “Green Man” when they saw him in the parks, wearing the green jumpsuit associated with the job. Apparently he loved that job so much that he was stubborn over the idea of leaving it once the band began touring, and those that knew him said Peter considered his experience with Parks & Rec to be the happiest times of his life. In one interview he claimed that leaving that job is what summoned his addiction issues. Peter also seemed to just love the color green.
Green is also a symbol in paganism (which Type O and especially Peter Steel most definitely studied and embraced for commercial reasons, but did not personally adopt), which symbolizes health, wealth, growth, and prosperity.
The idea is that, if your fields are green in the spring, you'll probably survive the year.
In his previous band 'Carnivore' he used the colors red and black, because maybe he wanted people to think that band had more of a political message. When he started Type O Negative, he wanted something similar, but they had a different message, so they used green and black.
That actually gives us new meaning to ‘I’m the greeeeeeeen man’ 😂
The Jolly Green Giant!
@@AdorkableDev Beat me to it. I don't know a lot about Peter Steel but he strikes me as a guy who knows the importance of the colour green
In the studio version of "Haunted", Peter Steele sings "I hate the morning" in 3 different octaves, it's given me goosebumps for the past 20 years!
I just discovered the song a week ago, it's extremely low. I really wish there were singers even close to Peter Steele
@@NatiNative04 you should definitely check out October Noir!
That low note flings my internal organs onto the floor.
'Haunted' is an incredible piece of music. Truly epic.
He was usually three sheets to the wind when performing live. Hence the sloppy lyrics. I heard he was shy and needed the liquid courage to get in front of an audience. Still amazing although slurred.
He had serious stage fright, but joked about being a masochist and doing it anyway.
i met him once in seattle. he most def was a shy person. i remember this fat goth girl walked up right when i was meeting him and started trying to give him her phone number. he just said "uh, ive got to go" and got out of there as fast as he could. i was pissed off.
I thought it was so cool when he would use his bottle of wine to play
He got sober and converted back to Catholicism so thank God for that he was amazing
He had a very serious stage fright, yeah.
The green color was what he called “Vinland Green”. I think he just liked green. It was a color of green he developed (is that the right word?) on his own. He used it everywhere including the flag he created for his fictional (but loosely based in reality) country, The Republic of Vinland. It can be found on every release from October Rust through the remainder of their catalog. I remember hearing it was a tough color to accurately reproduce and he was a perfectionist when it came to getting it right.
He and Fernandes Guitars came to an agreement and they made a custom bass for him. The shade of green was never right and I thought they never got the electronics quite right either. He only used it for one tour as far as I know. To be honest Fernandes’ shade was awful by comparison.
The fangs aren’t something he wears. Read somewhere he had his teeth filed down.
Pete and to a lesser extent, the band suffered from stage fright. He turned to wine as a way to cope. The wine use would worsen and eventually he turned to harder drugs. Often in performances you can see him going through multiple bottles of wine during a set. Sadly I’m not sure if many of his vocal “choices” on stage were conscious decisions. I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt though.
Pete often remarked that he hated listening to himself live because he hated how sloppy he sounded.
Pointing that out as a reference when watching live videos. ‘93-‘97- the band and Pete were in their prime. There are some live vids on YT of performances from those years. Live in Stockholm (90% sure) with a rare performance of the track Bloody Kisses. Simone please correct me if I’m wrong.
In interviews with Kenny and (either Johnny or Josh, I think Johnny) upon the release of the vinyl collection, they lamented the amount of time they spent arguing over the SPECIFIC shade of green with the record company because that’s how particular Peter was about it.
The green color Pete got from his days working in the NYC parks department . The Parks Dept logos and shirt colors were an almost neon green. He did it as a sarcastic statement. I used to hang out with the band in Brooklyn and Staten Island and also did a demo at Josh’s studio ( from what I remember his parents passed away and left him the house) where the band would rehearse and record as well. One of the most underrated bands and greatest guys to know.
The Green Man.
@@ausrick7 the jolly green giant
The green was there from Slow, Deep, and Hard (the 1st ep) not just from October Rust on. So it has been on everything from the start of Type O Negative.
It makes me so sad because he was so Ill during this performance, but still so amazing
Black no1 from dynamo in 1995 was their best live performance, peter was often called a giant with a big heart, thanks to him I started listening to gothic metal, rest in peace green giant.
Green Man. Not green giant.
Thought this was on Bloody Kisses? No?
Objection: I thought the gig was terrible compared to Querfurt. Peter Steele's howling and yelling was unbearable, I left the gig.
I didn’t know what goth metal was until I listen to them
He is truly missed, saw them open for Queensryche and wow what a voice!!!!!! Albums are great the music and vocals. Their cover of cinnamon girl is fantastic!!!!
Indeed - I tripped over that Cinnamon Girl cover as a CD Single (I'm old) - and it blew me away. One of my favorite covers.
Wow would have loved to have seen that, Queensryche was my fave band from day one, saw Type o Negative top the bill with stuck mojo and Entomed 👍
I saw that tour as well. Both bands killed!!
Saw them open for Queensryche too!
They did a number of covers. Some recorded but many just live. Their live version of Light My Fire by The Doors was great, and the live version I remember most he told the crowd that he loves that song and he was sorry if they just destroyed it. But they did...in a good way! RIP Peter

Very true.
His voice is always so low and deep even when he talks. Miss him love is voice. My favorite band. RIP peter!!!!!
Kenny Hickey played guitar for this band and supplied a lot of great vocals. September Sun is a great example of Peter’s low register contrasting with Kenny’s high register
Kennys band Silvertomb is decent its pretty much whats left of Seventh Void
@@icedvengence3845 thanks I’ll check them out!
Yeah. By the way, I miss that album on Spotify.
Back in the early 90's when people still went to music stores, I asked the employee," what new album should I buy, and NIN is one of my favorite bands." He said, "if you like NIN, you're going to love this band." He was absolutely right! To me it seems a crime bands like this never got radio attention, and went unknown for the most part.
I just thought I would add Denis Pauna. Not sure where I came up with band, but it is an awesome take on Typo O Negative. They cover other songs but sung with a Type O Negative vibe. He really sounds very close. I have some on it in my play list at work, and someone that was a fan way back thought it was them.
I loved all the crap that blew up about this "he mentioned a Devil's mark, their songs are about evil", and so on. Meanwhile I'm sitting there thinking "dude's singing about hair dye"...
Yup! It's just a big ad for hair dye! 😂😂

And goth culture! :-)
Actually he’s singing about a pretentious goth girl he was dating.
Peter told a a story/joke about it when one time he was having coitus with this girl and she wanted him to hold a mirror over his face so she could see herself having coitus with her self.
And he ends the story/joke by Say he was going to go tell her to go f- herself....but she already did.
Don't mention the true meaning of Wolf Moon. Only dude who could sing about a woman's cycle and make it amazing lmfao.
Here's what Revolver has to say about the color green: 'Steele's nickname "The Green Man" was, in part, a reference to his time in the Parks Department, but also due to his obsession with the color itself. "Pete was obsessed with the color green and having green on all the covers," Conner says. "And it had to be the right green." ' Hope it helps.
The Green Man also represents the Greek God PAN !
The green he wore was also the color of his uniform when working for the parks.
Once in an interview Peter said green symbolises color of his teeth
Green Man and Creepy Green Light are great songs by Type O Negative and their October Rust album is an instant classic.
And his eyes were green as well
The green is a complementary color to red, the color of blood, in fact, if you keep watching red for an extended amount of time and close your eyes, you will see this tone of green. Think of all the hidden meaning this might carry!
All of their album covers were also done in shades of green. I do believe that a version of Dead Again came out with a cover done in shades of red.
Re: the green
Peter Steele was very image conscious and wanted to create a clear visual brand that would be attached to their music. He insisted that all band members had and maintained long black hair, for example. Keyboardist Josh Silver, who was Peter's best friend, was also on board with this. Josh wanted the video for Black No. 1 to be in black and green rather than black and white. When the label refused, he didn't speak to their rep for EIGHT YEARS.
The colour scheme of the green and black was carried and used through the band's entire career, and not sloppily either. It always draws your attention, whether subtlely or overtly. That was by design. It was part of the Type O Negative experience. (see also: the font and placement of the band name and album title on their album covers).
I think we have a closet Goth in our midst.... I remember your "Love You to Death" reaction and I could see how much you were into the entire soundstage!!! Maybe I am premature in this.... But welcome to the fam!!! I have been in the scene since the mid 90's when I first heard Type O and have met some of the nicest and most amazing people in this "genre" or "way of life"
Peter Steele showed his long vocal tract in playgirl back in the day, lol
I highly request a studio version of this song, it's simply one of the best! And Wolf Moon as well, though pretty much anything they've done is worth reviewing
Cinnamon Girl.
Pete, maybe the whole band, never seemed to take themselves very seriously, it's almost like Steele is making fun of himself when they play live. The green came from Steele being called the Green Man because he worked for the parks department in NYC and loved nature.
Well...I think what made them so fascinating is how they ride that line between not-taking-themselves seriously and singing about deadly-serious things. As you listen, you are like, "Haahahahahahaha...wait?! They're joking right? Huh?"
I remember reading on the albums - Don’t mistake lack of talent for genius” or “Functionless art is simply tolerated vandalism … We are the vandals.”
Peter Steeler’s nickname was The Green Man. It was his favorite color and wanted the color green on all his albums. Creepy Green LIght is a great song! There are so many to choose from. Hope to see more of them reviewed on your channel!!
As much as I love Type O, I’m afraid and prepared for you to be disappointed in this video :( it’s not the best version out there for a few different reasons including sound quality. If you check out Anesthesia from Waken 2007 you can hear things more clearly and overall it’s such a beautiful song! 😇
Also Christian Woman from dynamo 1995
Yup! I realized that mostly through the video and apologized for it. I'll check the video out you recommended!
Lot of the live stuff sounds different than the studio stuff he changed his singing style for some parts live i have seen in different live videos
I second this suggestion of song and performance. Anesthesia shows more melody and range, as well.
@@TheCharismaticVoice awesome!
Type O Negative was one of the bands I discovered early in life, and greatly shaped my musical taste. I'm so happy you've given them a chance! Pete will be forever missed.
I was lucky to be exposed to Type O Negative a few years before they hit it mainstream. During high school (when this song was new) the local radio played the FULL version of Black No. 1 at night a lot. I remember cruising in my little pickup with the windows down and the volume cranked as high as the crappy speakers could handle.
Yep. She’s in love. Peter did it again. R.I.P. Green Man. Stay negative.
Pete's live performances were always much more "loose" and fun than his studio recordings and that's part of why I love them. It goes very well with his sense of humor and not taking himself too serious. I never thought they did any pitch corrections, just keep going until they got the take they wanted. If you are not overly familiar with them I would stick to the albums to better hear his voice.
Yeah, I never managed to see them live, but I'm pretty stunned by the difference between live and studio. I can't tell if this is actively a creative decision, or just not giving a fuck...
This brought back a lot of great memories for me. I saw Type O a few times right when Bloody Kisses came out. It took the album a while before it became a hit, so I got to see them at smaller venues and Peter would end the shows by letting everyone know he was available for bass lessons. Within a few months, he wasn't making that announcement at the end of the show any more. They were always so great live and I was very happy for them when they achieved the success that they deserved.
Honestly the time they sounded the best. Was really sad to see how bad they started to sound a decade later. Always loved hanging out with Pete and Josh. So many great memories.
Watching enjoy these recordings brings me joy. I saw them live twice. Their work between 1993 and 99 helped me deal with a lot.
Incredible singer. RIP Peter.
The greatest darkest Vampire character on stage.
First off: I really love your channel and the community around it, truly appreciate the great content. I am mainly a silent supporter, but TON videos make me want to speak. :)
As a long long time TON fan who knows the band inside and out, a 2007 performance of Peter - especially this one at Wacken - does not do him justice. :(
Highly unlikely you read this, but the 1999 Bizarre Festival footage from their DVD "Symphony for the Devil" should be one of the best pro-shots of them. The sound and video are not quite as HQ, but he was in top shape back then - even if under the influence still.
Keep it up Elizabeth, cheers from Germany :)
Yea its better. Saw Pete 8x, every Halloween in NYC. Seen him
Yes!
Saw him live in 96 along with Ozzy he was much much better than this.
1997 was when Peter was at his peak when it comes to his vocal performance.
The best reason NOT to listen/judge this version is b/c Josh had to use a TON of AUDIO SWEETENING to make it listenable. SO...it's not really as live as you think. Better to use a 90s version of the song.
Kenny Hickey's chorus and backing vocals are so great
On the Bloody Kisses album they had the Bensonhoist Lesbian Choir which are actually the band themselves 😄
Great keyboards by Josh Silver and drums by Johnny Kelly. Guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer also has a band called Seventh Void. Created after Peter Steele"s death. Hickey as lead vocalist
I subscribed to this channel after the previous TON reaction and I'm glad I did! I did want to point out that Peter wasn't the biggest fan of doing live shows, and funnily enough his best performances are actually on records. He had a very unique and resonant voice that many a-man have tried to imitate since. But he was one of a kind. As I said on that other video, there's an army of Peter Steele fans who will literally flood your channel every time you react to him. We love him and miss him as if he was family. 💚
You need to check out their song "Nettie". Shows the most of his range and is really good to boot. One of his best vocal performances
Was that written for the woman that Perry Farrell married ?
Nettie is one of my absolute favorites
@@franklinloll2229 It was written about his mother.
@@franklinloll2229 Peter wrote it for his mother after her death. Also a song on the album Life Is Killing Me about his father
Agreed. Nettie is a beautiful song, but it also demonstrates the range and depth of his voice!
I was very fortunate to meet Peter outside a show in the winter of like 96 or 97. He was so gracious and very fucking cool. I miss him and would love to have whatever music he would have made. RIP brother!
I saw Type O Negative on Dynamo Open Air in '95 when Peter, in front of 120.000 people, in the middle of the show said: "I've got to take a quick piss. I'll be right back" and left everybody standing there for 2 minutes. :)
Saw these guys open for a Bauhaus reunion tour. What a great show
When I was young in the mid or late nineties I went with a boyfriend to watch Queensryche and Type O Negative were opening for them. I had never heard of them until then. They played for half an hour , slated to play for 45 minutes, and and the crowd was losing its mind. Suddenly a guy came out and interrupted the show. Peter said to us all that it looked like Queensryche didn't like it and wanted to start early. He said they were leaving and invited the crowd to do the same. About half the crowd, including us, left.
I bet the guys at Queensryche were not particularlt happy with that move from Pete, lol
I miss that man like he was a close friend, a relative even, it's crazy. And looking back I realise even more HOW fucking EXTRAORDINARY his voice and vocal abilities were. No-one I've ever heard has or had this colour, this tone and timbre, not close, not even remotely. He was unique and I will never cease to mourn his untimely and preventable demise.
This song always instantly transports me back to my goth days.
Edit: this live version seems like they are playing faster than the album version.
Definitely faster than the album version. It's always a bit deceptive, like a 10% increase to me is always way faster than I think it is, but it's probably something like 5%.
as a musician it's very easy to play something live a lot faster than an album version. once you start something at too fast of a beat though you are kind of stuck there. wouldn't be surprised with a crowd that big that they possibly just were playing a little quicker than usual. also sometimes in larger festivals musicians dont get a large performance window so with them having very long songs they might have rushed a few to squeeze or 1 or 2 extras in. type o had a lot of really great songs.
Most live performances I've been to, the bands play faster than the album pretty much across the board
Not a huge fan of this particular love version. It’s still great but the thee best.
It's great when someone really experiences Type O but I love it when they realize that half the time they're talking trash about the goth scene. I remember being in high school when Bloody Kisses came out and so many people just went nuts for it, treating them like goth heroes, and I'm just like have you listened to the lyrics? Lol
Type o negative is goth , wym?
@@itsnotdio8119 Goth metal and goth are two very different things. People who listen to goth metal are usually metalheads and are into other metal genres as well. Goths are into goth rock, darkwave, coldwave, industrial, electro and EBM, much different scene. There are plenty of people who enjoy both of course, but it's two different scenes.
Tbh it's very goth to shit on goths. Goths are not emos, they don't treat themselves too seriously, they're perfectly aware how silly it all is and they love it. I've been to many goth events and festivals and goths are absolute party animals and very nice people in general.
@@sirgallant5000 exactly! The types that don't take themselves too seriously are the best people!
That's definitely my favorite song of Type O Negative, Peter's voice is just amazing and surreal! I wish he was still here. We miss you Peter🖤
"Nettie" is a great song, in which you can hear his deep voice perfectly. It is about his mother.
I love TON, I actually was a goth girl and still hear their music daily.
Was? I think parts of that stay with you forever, even if it’s just a little bit.
@@arnieslab yeah, probably not WAS, I still am, that's true. 😉
I guess I'm more goth at heart since I never 'looked' goth besides black or navy fingernails at times or occasions with eyeliner in college. Had several good friends (mostly from theater and art classes) that dressed 'gothic-looking' in college and I was more or less the 'Marilyn Munster' of the group. But though I went out with a couple of goth girls in college we didn't really date (remained good friends for years) and neither really liked TON as were not into heavier rock really - more Cure and Bauhaus. I always loved Type O and have only found 1 other person in my life who liked them as much - a coworker at a restaurant. A few friends were amused but not fans. So, I solemnly enjoy Peter Steele's awesome voice, lyrics and band's fantastic sense of heavy melody and harmony, sensuality, cynicism and bizarre humor. I still listen to entire October Rust album every fall and smile.
It would be fun to see your reactions to Sisters Of Mercy which probably started this vocal style. Peter Steele is like a comic book of that style in a good way.
Yep
Peter is the Prince
Andrew is King
I'd love to see Mike Patton's opera or metal performances on this channel sometime too!
@A C Agree . Mike Patton has a masterful control of his voice. His side projects are the place to start
According to bandmates Peter hated playing live and was heavly "under the influence" during alot of the live shows. As a huge type o fan I have mixed fealings about the live recordings. First of they loose alot of the amazing ambience from the records. And peters vocals, amazing as they are, are realy just a shadow of what he was capable of when he was in the recording studio fully focused. But I can't help but love the "don't give a F***" attitude they had when they played live. It is just so pure rock'n roll. There is a pretty cool live recording of "world coming down" that is worth checking out just because it comes of as such an emotional song to him. Anyways, love your videos and keep up the good work!
^^this^^ this performance really didn't do Peter or the band ANY justice at all
I wouldn't say it's Peter or the band live as opposed to this era where he was still drinking and slurring his words. If you watch live stuff from the Slow Deap and Hard up until October Rust he sounds great if not incredible. After his dad died, he unfortutly just wasn't the same. The coke and booze just destroyed him which saddens me to this day.
Sadly, he struggled with nerves and stage fright, hence the bottle of red wine he usually had on stage in front of him. I was fortunate to attend a concert at a small venue in Ventura, CA in '07 and my friend who had brought me explained the wine and his visible discomfort on-stage.
Type o Negative is 1 of my all time favorite bands! I love the music, vocals and parodies Peter choose to joke and poke fun of. Too bad noone can write music or joke like this any more... RIP Peter Steele and ty for doing this video. Love your channel girl
Also - The black and green were just colors he liked, and became the band signature. They were perfectionists in the studio, and well known for being just this side of sloppy live. They were amazing.
Pete also had stage fright. The fist time I saw them for October Rust tour. He downed two bottles of wine during the show.
@@Biosynthnut absolutely! One of the tines I saw them in 1999 or so, Peter started on stage with a full bottle of vodka, ended with an empty one, and actually used the bottle in his right hand to play a song or two. Seeing them live was always an interesting affair, because Peter was usually drinking pretty heavily, and the shows always felt like they could come off the rails at any time.
Hi Elizabeth. You’re awesome. Subscribed
Thanks for the sub, Andy! ❤
Please do more radio Disney videos Andy
Andy, you're awesome. RUclips and record companies are stupid morons. You're at the level of weird Al and Bob Rivers imo
I've seen some of your other videos, I don't know how a Type O video snuck past me though. They were absolutely my favorite band, and still are. I first saw them in 1998, not long after my 11th birthday (I got really lucky my mother is a cool person) and then literally every show they did in Philly from that point until Peter sadly died. Pete and the rest of the band got me through some really hard times in my younger angrier years and their music still helps me through life now. May Pete be resting easy wherever he ended, and to Kenny, Johnny and Josh I hope all's well for them.
Thanks Elizabeth. I really am appreciating your content lately - it’s intelligent, well thought out, and of course for me nostalgic.
This song really takes me back to my teenage years. It’s so amusing to me that the song totally mocks and pokes fun at the only people who would actually be interested in this type of band - I too was a mall-goth and painted my nails black and the like, but still saw the ridiculousness of it as well.
I think Peter was always obsessed with seeing how far he could push the envelope. I’ve seen him in interviews and you could never tell if he was being serious or not. The ironic thing is that most who were close to him said he really was a gentle soul, but as we learned after the fact he had a real problem with addiction and mental illness, and if you analyze the themes of his lyrics (especially the older albums) there is so much hatred which unfortunately often took the form of bigotry and misogyny, probably due to childhood trauma. This makes most of their music a hard listen - it’s almost like he wants you to not take him seriously because he hates himself so much, which is why you have these playful yet often sloppy renditions of their songs where you can clearly see the full extent of his natural talent clashing with the screeches and screams. Definitely check out the album version. A few songs on this album and pretty much all of October Rust in particular stands out as some of the most beautiful rock music of the 90’s.
Supposedly he was in recovery and doing better mentally when he did pass due to cancer. It would have been interesting to see if he would have gone on to make music that was more positive or at least embracing of beauty (I could totally see him doing classical or opera) - I think of how Trent Reznor made such self-destructive music early on and then got clean and fully embraced his natural talent for classical and electronic composition in his film scores and ambient recordings, while still managing to keep his edgy side going with NIN. It’s sad to see how such talent always seems to express itself through tortured souls. It makes me think what if musicians like Peter, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Jim Morrison and the like actually got well? I wonder if the music would have been nearly as good. Some of the darkest music helped me feel like I was not alone and literally saved my life.
I do have a love/hate relationship with Type O and it’s sort of a guilty pleasure of mine so I’m glad you’re diving into it. I’m sure I’m not the first to mention it but if I could make one request I’d like to see you cover Alice In Chains. Keep up the great content!!!
The creepy green light was an intergal part of Type O Negative. It was key in all their album covers, merch, even instruments. (Kenny Hickey's signature Schecter guitar finish is actually called "Steele Green"). They even have a song called Creepy Green Light. It's a great song!
Another halloween themed song
Pantone 369 💚
Steel loved his Green. He would go through 100's of shades until he found the one he wanted for his album covers.
He was a perfectionist.
Hi Elizabeth, this is my first time listening to this song and I enjoyed the performance. Peter's voice is always great, but his ultra deep vocals were amazing. There seemed to be a slight technical issue w/ the equipment towards the middle/end of the song, but the band carried on brilliantly. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
You need to watch his interviews to completely understand why he does what he does and where he came from. Tremendous showman and very smart business man. Love this band.
Type O used to play The Troc in Philly every Halloween. I got to see one of the Halloween shows in the late 90s, to this day, its it's one of the most fun shows I've ever attended.
I saw them in concert over a dozen times and I promise he CAN stay in tune. It's not all pitch correction in the albums 😊
I saw Type O Negative about 12 or 13 tines over the years, and each show was different in the tone through set list and venue size. For any who may not know, Seventh Void and A Pale Horse Named Death both feature guys from TON and will sound familiar. Obviously, there's no replacing Peter's voice and just... presence in the music, but they're both really enjoyable.
You forgot Silvertomb! They formed from the ashes of seventh void.
Check out Denis. He is doing a great job with the Type O Negative sound. ruclips.net/video/RngzkF5rD2k/видео.html
Proudly say ive been a Peter Steele fan for well over 2 decades now. One of a kind
I love Type O Negative with a passion and miss seeing their live shows dearly, but I wouldn’t recommend using their live performance videos for your vocal reactions.
Depends on the year. 90s and early 00s Pete was amazing live.
She wants live performances though so she can see the raw talent come through.
@@ethinos2719 but not those with Peter wrecked with drug&alcohol addiction😥
@@alghul66 Agreed. While the band could be amazing live, all too often the addiction issues could mar the performances. The studio material showcases what they could do unimpaired.
@@paranoidrodent yes
I'm pretty sure Peter Steele himself said he wasn't a trained singer and botched many live performances, but he always put himself out there and worked through the mistakes. He has an interesting voice for sure, and always seemed like a genuine guy.
I saw him severel times on stage during the " october rust" tour ; a real big stage animal, just three foots away from you; and then this deep voice, soft or strong; he was an absolut fascinating man with this beautiful long hair like the native people have.
Best song ever : " Love you to death" from october rust; masterpiece! R.I.P.
Pete Steele.
The story has it, the vocal tract was not the only long thing on Peter Steele.
Story? There's photographic proof.
Anyone remember the PlayGirl spread?
This man was responsible for half or more of my interludes with Gothic chicks... I resemble him a lot and that was the first thing they would say when they approached me. Find it weird I've outlived him. Rip Mr steele...
@@neoplasmax Hard to tell with your picture.
Oh but my point was to answer the question above. Most had the magazine. One even had the images on her walls in her bedroom. Guess she was a bit obsessed.
I had the pleasure of seeing them when I was 13 or 14 before Peter Steele passed. They were amazing live. RIP
The green color was iconic for T-O-N nearly since the beginning, found in the band's logo, the album covers and all early stage setups. Peter also "invented" the flag of the fictional "People's Technocratic Republic of Vinnland", which is the Scandianvian Cross in Black/Green.
This heaviness with vocals of Peter builds also from low B-tuned guitar and bass. Kenny hicks also uses this Fernandes sustainer on his guitar that creates this haunting feedback (neck pickup that feeds magnetic field back from bridge pickup to strings. This can be heard particularly at the end guitar solo).
Cheers!
Kenny Hickey
I replied to one of your other videos just a little while ago... Thank you for taking the time to listen to this very underappreciated band! I've been into them for decades as have many others, but they never really broke big. It is AWESOME to see a music professional like yourself analyze what is going on, even if Steele himself probably never looked into it that deeply. Printed on the back of their album "Bloody Kisses" - "Don't mistake lack of talent for genius." Steele had a great sense of humor. :)
I remember when this came out. No one sounds like Type O.
Check out Denis Pauna’s channel. He does good TON covers of songs.
You have a bunch of us that LOVE Type O, keep bringing them to us, PLEASE! Also, Kenny Hickey is an underrated singer himself. Might check out Seventh Void "Heaven is Gone"
Type O Negative's cover of "Cinnamon Girl" is great.
Those aren't vampire fangs. Those are his real teeth. Peter was really into nature and even worked for the NYC park service. The kids used to call him Green Man. That's why all the green. They even have a song called Green Man.
"Don't mistake lack of talent for genius." - Peter Steele
Now go listen to Green Man by TON
I saw them live 6 times, and everytime he had 4 or 5 bottles of wine on stage, he even played his bass once with a bottle
I'm almost sure that the color green was chosen from the neighborhood Greenwood that is in Brooklyn. You here them mention it quite a few times in their songs. For instance, "recently buried in Greenwood Cemetery" and "The soil splits, Greenwoods ground will quake beneath me". Pete was and always will be the Green Man
Peter was a pretty good dude.
I spoke to him on the phone a few times as I had a friend that went to their concert and ended up hanging out with him after the show and then they continued being friends after.
Pete was something wonderful, his winking personality and dynamic voice were such a treasure, and Type O was irreplaceable. Their sense of humor and slyly irreverent embracing of Goth culture was wonderful. We'll never have another band like that again, sadly.
Side note: I echoe your appreciation of deep male vocals. I have a deep voice, and Pete's voice was so awesome for me to hear when I discovered Type O back in high school. I loved singing their songs because Peter and I had very similar voices.
Following the black theme.... the next song should be Danzig's - Her Black Wings... would be the logical step from Type O !!!!
I was thinking "How the God's Kill".
But yes Danzig would be a good next band.
YESSS!
@@m.c.photography8357 Love that song!
Or the new project from Phil Anselmo En Minor.
Interesting that "Black No 1" is the second song Mrs. Zharoff has analyzed this week with "black" in the title. I actually saw Type O live back in the day with Queensryche (what an odd pairing) and this song was the last one they played. They're a unique, entertaining band, so this should be a fun reaction (duh!). I hope that date with Nosferatu goes well.
where'd you see that tour? I saw them and Queensryche in Phoenix. Great show :)
@@briancollis1809 It was in Louisville. Yeah, it was awesome!
I saw that tour twice in Michigan! The first time, Type O was opening, and we skipped it, just getting there for the last song. The singer actually thanked everyone that stayed, and apologized to everyone who didn’t care for them. I thought that was really cool and decent of him.
I saw that same tour in Boise, Idaho on Halloween night (I think it was, or very close to that night). 🤙
I saw that tour at The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington State, and the next night in Portland Oregon. Fantastic show from both bands on both nights!
Watching you discover these songs is such a refreshing take on some old favorites. Thank you for making the analysis. 🔥🔥🔥
Type O have the green and black on all of their album covers and it's a strong feature of their overall branding: their logo and merchandise. I love how the colours work together to help create the atmosphere. I especially like the hospital machine blip image on the cover of 'Life is killing me' album.
The music video is cool but it's a shortened radio edit version of the song. If you really want to experience the true artistry of Black No. 1, I recommend the album version. They created so much ambiance and feeling with the keyboards and effects. It's really a masterpiece and paints a picture in your head. (Even though the song is a humorous take on goth girls)
Well said. I love type o and think for the way it was intended album versions are the best
Unfortunately that concert Peter was pretty sick and battling his demons. He has a long "rock star" backstory battling depression, anxieties and addictions. At one point his family even had him turned over to Rikers Island! He often referred to his music being a form of "sonic therapy" and I'd agree as a lot of his music is very relatable. Deaths in the family, addictions, heartbreak and even self loathing are all common motifs found in the music. Of course some of the songs are more tongue and cheek like "I don't wanna be me" or "Electro-Cute" and things of that nature which are reflecting more so on ones own self and how they project that view back into the world (delusion). I honestly love Type O and when I got the call and hour before the news broke that Peter died, he was one of the only "celebrities" I kind of broke down and cried over because he had a really tough struggle and the dude was just a big fun asshole (he'd agree), he loved a lot of things but was struggling with a lot mentally. Guess it's a Catholic thing (relatable).
His family had him turned over to a psych ward due to ongoing mental issues that were made worse with drugs and alcohol. He was incarcerated at Riker's Island for assault on his long-term girlfriend's boy toy (she cheated on him). What's sad is that he died of sepsis from untreated diverticulitis (pockets in the intestines where food can get trapped and rot). Despite his demons, he injected his off-beat sense of humor into everything he and the band did - you can hear it even more with the older stuff (i.e. before Black No. 1). I had the pleasure of being able to spend a lot of time with the band every time they toured Florida - all good guys. I didn't think anything could really intimidate me except when I heard him cuss someone out in half-Russian/half-English. He died the day before my mom (same year) so it will always stay with me
It makes me happy that you're enjoying Type O Negative. The green is one of the themes/gimmicks that Type O used, along with orange. They used to note a fictional character in their liner notes named Phlogiston Verdigris a little bit, and it was more or less a play on the joke of them using orange and green in their album art/merchandise/etc. Peter Steele was also very much a guy in tune with nature. He used to work for the parks department in New York; and in the After Dark DVD they released, they had an interview section where Peter said Fall was his favorite season "because the trees look like they are on fire" (again, the green and orange theme). Peter also designed the Flag of Vinland (derived from other Nordic Cross flags) and had it quite often displayed during shows, and he used this as a way to honor his Scandinavian heritage (as Vinland is what the Vikings called a portion of the Eastern costal area of the US). Sadly, some hate groups have tried to appropriate the flag, which seems common with several Norse icons and imagery because some people are idiots. Another gimmicky kind of joke that Type O used was kind of an homage to The Beatles. The Beatles were sometimes called the Fab Four; whereas, Type O called themselves The Drab Four.
Please check out Anesthesia, Too Late (Frozen), and Wolf Moon.
I wish I could like this more than once.
How long until Elizabeth gets her Type O tattoo? I'd add to the suggestions of Nettie for a future reaction. I'm not sure of any good live videos to react to, but his vocals are just haunting on that one. It really showcases his range, plus I believe it was in reference to his Mother.
His mother name was indeed Nettie.
Hi Daniel Cooper this is Daniel Cooper in Texas. I like your name.
@@dancooper102 Ditto, good sir.
I remember singing this song along with them. I am 70 and it was awesome. The girls were mostly sll dressed in black gowns at the show with purple highlights in there black hair. It was a small place in Asbury Park. Very entertaining night to say the least. Type O ruled the club scene
This review will be a hit. This song is pretty well loved by Type O Negative fans and Halloween lovers.
