    Thankyou for being honest Phil. Showing the small flaws is part of giving people the information they need to make their own decision whether or not to buy from Grant Stone.

    4:08 for the loafers, 8:36 for the boot. Love both of these, thanks for the video. Loafers are really just the classiest way to casual, I love it, total gentleman’s pic.

    I love my Dune CXL Diesel's. My first pair was a pair of Ottawa's in crimson cxl, then Dune Diesel's, and then Black CXL Diesel's with natural welt, midesole and outsole. I think that GS boot are a work of art and I love every one of my GS boots.

      Simply put: These fit me very well. Let me look at some of my other shoes here... I have some Asics running shoes that are 10.5, 1000 mile boots in 10D, Allen Edmonds Ridgeway in 9.5EEE -- Those all fit me well. The Grant Stone Diesel boots are 9.5EEE and fit SO nicely. They are incredibly comfortable for me right out of the box. Wyatt has explained to me that I haven't worn them enough to even get to the "comfortable" part yet but I love them already.

    It’s interesting you mention the adhesives smell. I bought a pair of AE Higgins Mill boots in natural CXL, with red Dainite soles, and they always smelled of adhesives. Even after multiple wears I can sometimes smell it when wearing them in car and the air blows up from below dash past boots and into my nose. I think AE has issues with this, as I had another boot of theirs, which I returned due to sizing, but it absolutely reeked of adhesive smells. I had even put in garage overnight to try to dissipate.

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  2 года назад

      I wish we could transmit smell over the Internet. It makes a big difference to me. The adhesive stench is off putting. Shell cordovan has a magical scent. Bummer that you got a stinky pair of Higgins Mill boots -- I really like the way they look but I haven't seen them in person. A thought here: Chromexcel is notoriously difficult to glue because it has so much wax/oil/grease in it. Maybe they had to use an extra powerful glue for this particular make

    It's a good looking loafer but they need to make a model where they carry the strap all the way down and point the nose a bit more to dress them up. Bankers love the full strap penny as you can wear it with a suit. In black of course.

      In the interview from last week Wyatt explained that he doesn't call it natural Chromexcel because they polish it with a little bit of brown cream. It is smart for them to do that because it does change the color very subtly.

      Tough call here because the sample size is n=1 for shell boots. I only have the Vibergs in natural shell. I'd have to say I prefer Chromexcel at the moment because it simply seems more comfortable

      Ashland Leather Co. I heard the break in of viberg is intense since they use such thick leather. Some shoe tree might help. But thanks for the answer I respect your opinion a lot. I’m learning a lot about leather from you. Can’t wait to see more content from you. Really like the shoe talk video. Will get a grant stone as my next shoe purchase.

I HIGHLY suggest reaching out to them directly before ordering for sizing help. The loafers my brother got seem a little big on him but I think he gave poor info to them for sizing

    Just watched this video a year after it came out and I don’t see a follow up video to show how they’ve worn in for you. Would be cool if you did a 1 yr update

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  2 года назад

      Great idea to follow up. I'll plan to make a video for an update soon. Long story short is that I love them. The Diesel boots are one of my most worn pairs. I also find the long wings to be one of my more striking pairs but I wear them less because of the style and the sizing is a little off for me. The diesel boots have broken in to be a little more roomy than when I first wore them. I don't love the rubber stud sole (danite-ish) and I find the leather sole to be 10x more comfortable. Honestly the diesel boots were more comfortable out of the box but they are certainly not uncomfortable now. Just a HUGE amount of room on this last it seems. Advice would be to get sized from Grant Stone -- they are very helpful

  • @benjaminkenobi21
    @benjaminkenobi21 4 года назад +1

    Another thing, talking about Wyatt being able to judge size... I emailed him and Josh detailed pics of me wearing a shoe of theirs that I bought, and they talked about how they could tell by seeing the pic that I had the right size on. Turns out 1/2 size down was my right size in their shoe and the one they saw was too big. Beware Grant Stone guys, they’re nice guys but they don’t quite have their stuff together yet.

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  4 года назад

      I had the opposite experience and it sucks that they didn't get you the right size. Wyatt looked at my foot and picked a size. A week later I had a surprise pair of 10EEE boots that fit me better than anything I've ever worn. They obviously didn't get it right for you. Unsurprisingly, Wyatt described sizing as their biggest issue. Everyone is different.

    • @benjaminkenobi21
      @benjaminkenobi21 4 года назад +1

      Ashland Leather Co.... No. The right size in this brand might work great for some folks. Like I said, the size of the shoe is not what’s wrong. I know this because I just got them back from having the JR sole put on, and this fixed the heel slip. The sole on my pair was awful. I also wasn’t the only guy to bring up the heel fit being an issue, there is a comment about it in their reviews. I hope their other shoes/lasts, esp. the thinner profile shoes, are better than their Leo.

      I've been wearing the Diesel boots for about 3 days now. I have to say I did not experience mine to be stiff like wood. Honestly when I wear them they are so comfortable I just forget I am wearing them...I can't say the same about a lot of my boots. Maybe this is just because they are fitting me very nicely. I didn't see much of a need to break in. Quite comfortable right away. Wyatt tells me that I haven't even gotten to the comfortable part yet. I'm excited to keep wearing them

  • @benjaminkenobi21
    @benjaminkenobi21 4 года назад

    I feel like I’m one of the few customers of Grant Stone that is unsatisfied with their product. I have some double-soled longwings, and the sole is like concrete... coupled with the badly fitting heel, the shoe slips like mad on my heel. After a year, the sole never broke in. I had to have a cobbler replace it with a JR sole just to make them wearable. I left a similar, honest review on their site and the owners refuse to post it. The shoes look beautiful, but for me, that’s as far as it goes.

    • @Erik-gd3or
      @Erik-gd3or 4 года назад

      Anon Ymous reducing heel slip on laced shoes isn’t difficult. Just pull the laces tighter. Unless the quarters are completely closed. Then you have an exceptionally low volume foot or are wearing the wrong size. As far as the soles being stiff. They broke in quickly for me, but I can understand not loving them. I plan to swap to a rubber sole when the time comes. You might try some cushioned wool socks. They can help a lot with comfort and fit.

    • @benjaminkenobi21
      @benjaminkenobi21 4 года назад +1

      Erik That Grant Stone Leo last doesn’t fit my foot. It may seem very cut and dry to you about just pulling the laces tighter, but all that does it make the shoe uncomfortably tight across my lower ankle, without helping the slippage at all. It sounds like you’re trying to prescribe a simple fix to a problem you don’t yourself have experience with. Anyway, I wouldn’t say I have a low volume foot, as most other shoes I wear work fine for me... it’s this Grant Stone last that is the exception to that, warranting my recommendation for folks to be generally cautious about their Leo last shoes. So I stand by my statement.

    • @benjaminkenobi21
      @benjaminkenobi21 4 года назад

      Erik And like I said in my original post, its the combination of the sole and the heel shape itself that causes the slip, not that I have the wrong size. I went thru more than one size and exchanged my pair based on conversations with Josh (co-owner) until I found this size, so don’t tell me I have the wrong size shoe on. Maybe you should actually just consider what Im saying might be justified rather than trying to imply that its mine or my foot’s fault that I’m not satisfied with their product.

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  4 года назад +2

      I don't discredit your experience at all. Sucks that they didn't work for you. I don't think that Grant Stone should hide your review. I discourage that because I think people need to know how stuff fits. Having said that... (reposting what I just wrote on another comment I just wrote) I've been wearing the Diesel boots for about 3 days now. I have to say I did not experience mine to be stiff like wood. Honestly when I wear them they are so comfortable I just forget I am wearing them...I can't say the same about a lot of my boots. Maybe this is just because they are fitting me very nicely.
