It's so weird to think "I'm ready, depression" is an actual quote said by SpongeBob, just goes to show how at the time the writers of the show and movie were ahead of their time

i fucking love this game but its my least favorite game of all time. idk how its just both. its fun but you also feel like youre gonna rip your hair out.
Remember after playing through one of the krabby wagon challenges mutliple times and failing, I was one away from passing it, and the minute I get there, the ring disappeared and I failed the challenge. I ended up breaking my ps2 controller after that.

Yeah, BFBB is on my (chum) bucket list, but I definitely remember playing this game as a kid and loving it. I also remember never being able to enter Shell City: Dead Ahead because I never got enough Goofy Goober tokens, aside from this one time when my brother did that. Don’t remember the actual level, though

I'm honestly shocked you never talked about the soundtrack. The soundtrack for this game absolutely slaps and is very memorable. They really put a lot of care into this game.
I especially love the one used in the goffy gobber level it just sounds like an ice cream store its so goffy silly and random not to mention fricking bouncy and catchy also yeah its a more bouncy and goffy remix of the one from the film
Yeah, the Goofy Goober song is great. Every song is. You can tell Heavy Iron really cared, they didn't just go "meh it's a licensed game throw some shit together".
@@Angliscwer93 I feel like BFBBs songs are excellent, but this game's songs feel way more energizing. The sliding theme is my favorite overall, and the Planktopolis theme was so dire and scary, just like the level was as a kid. I like to have the soundtracks on while doing housework or playing Minecraft.

Zac MCV it’s just a similar sort of game and as a kid it was my favorite PlayStation 2 game.
I cannot even begin to explain how much I love the spongebob 3d platformers, even now as a grown adult. I still bust out my old consoles just to replay them every once in a while. Even as a 22 year old college student I still hope we get not only more remasters of them but more new 3d platformers based on them as well, unlikely as that may be. A man can dream!

The movie game was most likely rushed because the development team was split in half so 1/2 a development team was working on the movie game and the other half was working on The Incredibles movie. This what I heard a long time ago so this may not be 100% but if true this makes sense since both of these games were developed by heavy iron and came out the same year.
Even if that's true, both games are great. So I salute Heavy Iron for making two great games with one equivalent development team at the same time.

My favorite part about the cutscenes it that the further into the game you go the worse they get and the more clipart you see.
I love this game. It’s probably my second favorite childhood game, and I like it more than BFBB despite it being more linear because I feel like there’s more going on. I like that BFBB was more open, but it also seemed more empty. The movie game was crammed with Easter Eggs and mini games, which I think made it more engaging to me despite being more linear.

Yeah, the movie game DEFINITELY has its flaws that will turn a lot of people off, especially coming from playing BFBB, but the flaws aren't enough to stop me from having a good time and still consider this one of the best movie tie in games of all time. Coming from someone who played this game BEFORE playing BFBB.
I remember breaking my save file by upgrading the block-throwing move as soon as I unlocked it. The upgrade causes the block to explode on impact with the ground, and the very first use of the move requires you to throw a block multiple times across several platforms.
Yeah that left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I did this but you could still do the old throw if you quickly hit maximum r button sensitivity on gamecube
This was the first game I ever played, for ages I thought it came out before Battle for Bikini Bottom since it didn't feel quite as polished, but since it was my first ever gaming experience I am super nostalgic and biased towards it, I would genuinely love for there to be a rehydrated version to come out since I no longer own an original xbox to play it on, and if Battle for Bikini Bottom rehydrated goes well I can count on corporate greed to take my money to try and relive better days... yay
I had the GBA version and man was that game hard for me when I was a kid. I think I still have it somewhere in my house I should play it for old times sake.

The spongebob movie is when I stopped watching the yellow guy. I thought his arc ended and the plankton search for the formula was over. But I guess Nickelodeon wanted to keep that sponge train going.
Apparently, the movie takes place at the end of the timeline. No matter what Nickelodeon does, that’s still the end.
At least the show got better ( after like a decade of being mediocre at best )
@@greeneye2037 Yeah, the series was supposed to end with the movie, but Nickelodeon wanted more, and Hillenberg threatened to leave the project if they renewed it. They did, he quit, Zeus Cerverus took over and it suuuuuuucked. Hillenberg came back for the second movie, stayed around until his untimely death a few years later, and now there's a whole bunch of spinoffs in the works.

The reason why the game has those clip art cutscenes is cause it was basically ready before the movie was done, so they had to use concept art and whatever they could find to recreate what was on the movies script.

This was one of my first PS2 games, and by extension, one of my first GAMES in general. Needless to say it holds a special place in my heart.
i was the perfect age for this game to be nearly perfect in my eyes. i played it for hours and hours over and over on the sliding stages to get the best times. im sure it wouldnt hold up to my standards today but for a 9ish year old its a great tv show tie in game

Exactly, we've gotta remember that a videogame based on a movie is developed alongside it, and what's ready in one isn't always ready in the other when the other needs it most. At least the structure of the Spongebob film was done by the time the game was in pre-prod, I mean when you look at some other movie tie-ins the game doesn't even follow the plot. Because there wasn't a plot yet when they started making the game.
I actually have the version for GBA; it's genuinely good, and I recommend you check the OST for it. It's bomb

I love this game so much. I got this for Christmas from my grandma all those years ago instead of the actual movie and I don’t hate her for it one bit because it’s just so much fun. In fact, I think this one’s better than Battle For Bikini Bottom because of the Patty Wagon and Slide levels. It switches things up and keeps the game fun, even if it does result in backtracking.

So glad you're covering this. BFBB was awesome, and I honestly think the Movie Game was overlooked. Honestly it refines BFBBs gameplay, and it has some absolute gems of moments.

I remember loving this game and the patty wagon sections, but I remember leaving a part of my soul on those time trial tracks bc of the difficulty. I remember this one being so much harder than Battle and it really meant so much more to me when I did complete it.
Just talk about the Heavy Iron trilogy. Battle for Bikini Bottom, The Movie Video Game, and Truth or Square. You could possibly also talk about Creature From the Krusty Krab since that’s inspired by the Heavy Iron games.

yes finally a video about this game one of my favorite childhood games, I loved this game and even though there is a difficulty spike in the later levels it's a fun challenge and feels rewarding after beating it.
I'm so glad that this game's covered in a video. I've never played Battle for Bikini Bottom until fairly recently (it's really good), but this game and the movie were my CHILDHOOD.

This game has even less reason to be good than BfBB but somehow we struck gold twice.
Before you play creature from the krusty krab watch the episode “Sleepy Time” (Episode 15 of Season 1) the game pays homage to it in almost every way.
I loved playing this when i was younger and sometimes wish i could play it again, maybe if i get my ps2 fixed, but there’s just two little flaws that keeps popping up whenever i think of this game.
One is the cutscenes. To anyone that doesn’t know, this game was being developed before the movie came out, because that concept always worked out. (Not saying this game in particular is bad, it’s just that making a video game about a movie before the movie is out usually doesn’t work well, just look at the ratchet and clank remake that was for the movie.)
Because of this, nickelodeon wouldn’t allow the developers to use any bit of film and they had to use stock images of spongebob instead, making it look less of an offically licensed video game, and more of a chinese knockoff.
I just don’t get why nick wouldn’t allow clips of the film for their game that was about the film, the final cutscenes look like a beta concept rather than a finished product.
My other problem with the game was those sliding missions, specifically the timed and ring challenges.
I actually really liked the sliding missions, they were really fun, apart from the last one where you’re sliding on king neptune’s crown to escape the cyclops’ lair. That one had some tight turns and even on the first mission made me annoyed that i was falling so much.
But anyways, the first timed mission isn’t too bad, just you gotta get down to the end but remember you’re timed so don’t dawdle.
But the sevond one is just like you have to use every shortcut you know and make sure you don’t slip up, otherwise you’re wasting time.
I can’t tell how many times i thought i had pin perfect accuracy on a course and still lose by a few seconds. Hell, i once got close to the finish but still lost by about a second or two, makes me wonder if they actually tested the times before finalising the game. And the ring challenges are just as annoying. Sometimes just because of how they’re laid out. Some rings are placed on tight corners where you have to be on one side to actually make the turn, but the ring is on the other sideand you have to time your turn perfectly or else you either fall off the side or miss the ring.
I’m also not partial to the driving sections. I hate the one where you have to drive through the plankton-ized bikini bottom, not only because the first missiin is a timed challenge, but also because i never completed enough missions to unlock it and had to go through the tough time challenges to do so. I guess that’s also a gripe i had, i hated that you had to complete a set amount of missions to unlock the next one.
I know that a couple of other games did that as well, like super mario 64, but at least they had enough stars in that game where you didn’t need to collect all the stars to reach the end, and only if you’re that determined to do so.
In thos game, you need almost all of the missions complete just to reach the end, and that means beating all the secondary missions in all the levels, but also having to beat some of the hard time missions as well.
I once got so infuriated at one of the challenges, i quit playing it for about a month or two, because every time i looked at it, i kept thinking of that damn timed challenge and geting mad again.
I only ever managed to beat it because during a timed sliding mission, i fell off the edge on one part and landed back on the slide. That’s the only way to beat that mission, unintentionally cheesing the game.
After that, even beating the final boss was really bittersweet. I not only didn’t feel rewarded for besting the game because i cheesed it, but also because i was still rather hot from my earlier attempts and was still very upset about it.
I suppose i could try to play it again, not this i have a better knowledge and better reflexes than my past self, though i fear i may just be subjecting myself to my past infuriations.
I grew up with revenge of the flying dutchman, and the movie game. All I remember is that I couldn't get past the final time trial level.
The platforming levels with the weird texture voids are like a fever dream to me
