R2 is one of my most sought-after cut elements from Sonic games. It's the "c17_02" of the Sonic series hahaha. For those who aren't Half-Life 2 fans, "c17_02" was one of the map files that made up the trek through City 17 presumably during the game's late 2000-early 2001's development period. In the map folders we have that were leaked in 2003, there are many revisions of c17_01 and a single revision of c17_03, but no copies of c17_02.
@@voidpacer Yes, they're VMF files, uncompiled map files. They contain general information about the map, the 3D geometry, the position of the entities, etc... They do not contain textures, entities, models or sound effects. Thankfully however, a build of the game was leaked alongside those uncompiled maps and although it is from late 2003, it still contains some textures, sound effects, models and entities from earlier development phases.
I can't wait to start seeing Dubious Depths mods. It's a great time to be a CD fan. I feel like we're on the cusp of a proper CD PC version equivalent to Sonic 3 A.I.R. It's the only Classic game to go, and the work done on the Restored mod would be a great foundation. There's even mods to restore the Mega CD pixel art cutscenes, missing music loop pieces, instantaneous time travel, etc. The work just needs to be compiled together.
You know, with the fact brought up at 7:05, I can't help but wonder, could the Past & Good/Bad Future tracks be based off the other Pacific tracks by 808 State Pacific 718 sounds like it could be the inspiration for a bad future track, and Pacific 101 sounds like possible inspiration for a past track. Edit: Pacific 909 sounds like something that would be a good future track as well.
Honestly I would love to see all 3 of sonic cd’s scrapped zones come back in a future remake. Not counting mirage saloon. I would wonder how both R2 & DD would play out if they actually came out would they be like something in the style of SS, TT or even MM. or would they do their own thing. For FF I think it would have worked like the final boss of SA3 but you would have to time travel to defeat the boss. I’m not sure tbh.

If R2 is the random stage found in the credits, then someone could potentially try and remake what R2 could have been. Just thinking about it, it’s sort of like marble zone in the way it looked, without lava. Potentially even looking like some of the Sonic 2 concepts art.

Marble zone + labyrinth zone = r2
Probably but the colors for r2 would probably be different since some of the other levels aren’t colored like they are in the final game
