  • In the early days of rock and roll, Roy Orbison was famous for his classic falsetto voice. Now, 25 years after his death, Jim Axelrod reports on how his sons found an old song of his that's become part of a new CD and documentary called "Mystery Girl Deluxe."

      Stan Parkin I’ll be 40 April 25 2020. In 1991 I had a spinal tumor removed. I was told I had a 10 percent chance to walk after the surgery. I was in the hospital all of December. I listened to two albums that month and nothing else. Roy Orbisons greatest hits and Metallica’s Black album. Walked out December 21st 1991. Only the lonely know why we exit light.

    My husband and I LOVED Roy's music and played it all the time. We listened to his CD on car trips and my little girls would sing along. My girls each played musical instruments through HS. It is so sweet and gratifying to me to have this man as an example to hold up to my daughters as being a great talent, a gentleman, a Christian, someone who followed his heart and was a good person.

    He lost his wife, then two sons, many people would never be able to come back after such tragedy much less shine. The son with the long hair really looks like Roy. These boys lost their father at a young age. It's nice to see they've been able to have some closure with this new song.

    Roy Orbison was a musical miracle. His lyrics, his voice were incomparable. He was a blessed man and a cursed man, losing his wife and two children were awful, however he picked himself up and brought joy to the world. His music will never die.

    @robinc8903 8 лет назад +68

    What a sad story to lose two children so young. It had to have been the worse kind of pain imaginable but in the end, what a beautiful gift Roy left his boys in this song, I loved that they were able to redo it so his sons could sing along with their Dad. He seemed like such a wonderful Father to them and its so obvious they feel the pain of his absence. What a bittersweet story.

    A voice from heaven. Brought me to tears. Someone posted earlier about how wonderful it was considering how it came from an old cassette tape and so pure. Now a days so called artists have their music electronically altered to hide all their flaws. Not this one.

    • @darklordojeda
      @darklordojeda 7 лет назад +7

      You're absolutely correct. The "artists" now are terrible singers, they just have to look pretty and have the "it" factor. The studio will handle the vocals. Listen to a lot of these pop stars live. That's your proof.

Best singer of his time and I guess an even better father. RIP Roy. You done good.

    That's awesome. Even though your dad's music was my parent's generations music, it had more impact on the music of my youth ( late 70s through the 80s), than any other artist I ever heard, I think because his wide vocal range, and ability to express feeling through lyrics also influenced and inspired so many of the artists who entered the music world at that time.
    Most of the musicians I've had the privilege to see and sometimes meet have said that they were bigger fans of Roy Orbison than Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash combined!
    As a man who once wished he had been gifted with a voice and some instrumental ability/talent, (I have NONE, LOL - only able to put words into uncollected poetry), I applaud the son's of Roy Orbison for succeeding in their quest to bring his gift, and theirs to us in the talentless listening world!

    Nobody sings like Roy. The most operatic of all rock singers. Orbison, a baritone, had a three-four octave range. The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Dwight Yoakam, Chris Isaak and Bono (among several others) have all cited Orbison as one of their favorite singers.
    What else can you really add to that..

    Claudette died after being hit by a truck while she and Roy were motorcycling in Tennessee, a few years before the fire which took Roy's sons' lives, but she died in his arms on the way to the hospital. Thank God he found Barbara who as the other love of his life, helped him recover and thrive afterward - what Roy went through would have overwhelmed and beaten down anyone else, it shows how much strength the man had.
    This was a man who had experienced devastating tragedy in his life, but always kept the faith and soldiered on so bravely. He also experienced the satisfaction of knowing his time was coming again, but was cut short by his own untimely passing.
    Elvis was no "king" - he never so much as wrote a song, and he let his addictions and tragedies get the best of him. Roy is, was, and always will be "the Caruso of Rock & Roll".

    I was thrilled to find Wesley Orbison's songs on Bandcamp. He is Roys son and (Spread Your Wings) is so beautifully done with Johnny cash's grandson on guitar and I believe Wesley's wife sings backup. It was recorded at Johnny cash's recording studio where Roy Orbison recorded. It is a beautiful song and although Wesley has some unique softness to his voice, you can difinitly tell that he is Roys son and a gifted musician, song writer and vocalist.

    I've loved Roy Orbison's music since I was a Young Girl! He was Sooo Cool & that voice just mesmerized the moment. I liked the way he would stop & then hit you with a beautiful lyric. I will have to download or buy the Love Song he left behind for everyone! Thanks...

    I used to listen to Roy Orbison in my 1976 Datsun Pickup truck. It had a CB/AM/FM radio with 8-track player. After he died, I sold the truck and I never heard Roy on the radio again. It is as if the old truck had a knack for finding Roy Orbison. Not one other vehicle I have had has ever played Roy Orbison. Perhaps I should get a newer stereo receiver in my vehicle and bluetooth a 4g tablet to the radio and run RUclips, Pandora, or Iheart, and force it to play Roy Orbison. I can not find any cassettes anyway. The stores only sell blank cassettes. Music can no longer be found on cassette.

    He is definitely one of 5 people I would love to have as my guest at my dream dinner party list & I certainly want to meet when I cross over. I love his music, he was/is a memorable part of my teen years. ❤️
