    Empire of the East is an officially licensed Campaign Setting for Dungeon Crawl Classics. It is not my favorite DCC book but it has some solid material.

    As a person who grew up in the 1960s and '70s this setting feels like the pre-Tolkien fantastic fiction literature that fell out of popularity as authors sought to recapture the magic of Tolkien by writing trilogy after trilogy featuring elves and dwarves. Of course the Tolkien imitators have been replaced with edgy characters, grim-dark settings and monstrous protagonists.
    The reality is there are a ton of great role playing stories that can be gamed in each of these versions of fantasy!

      That was my thought too. I actually edited out a section explaining how LotR changed fantasy. But LotR came out in the 50s so it didn't fit as an explanation for this 1968 book

    I've recently received Mutant Crawl Classics and Crawling Under a Broken Moon compendium, and I think combining those two would make a fantastic Post-apocalyptic game.

    Thank you for all of your content! Last night Goodman Games announced that they will be have a second printing on EotE with about 8 more pages of content. It looks like there will be some healing rules/ideas, and some random adventure generator with plot hooks to create a mini campaign. I hope the PDF will be updated so I can get the new rules. I Kickstarted this after reading the original books, I wish I would have read them when I younger. I really like the bones of this fantasy/sci-fi setting, and find this to be a great tool for new DCC-Judges.

    Plus, you can run a DCC/MCC hybrid in this setting. Watch the film Wizards, made in the 70's. Written & directed by Ralph Bakshi. There's also a Wizards by Ralph Bakshi RPG, but ita rare

    I am making my own setting in the north for this, because I just love the magic and its place in this world

    • @NOLNV1
      @NOLNV1 Год назад

      Worth adding: the books are good adventures and seem weirdly identical to Star Wars in parts, they are very quick and fast paced reading, and though the setting might seem to contradict this, are heavily, heavily, fantasy flavoured rather than sci fi or post apocalypse.
      What happened or happens anywhere but where the main cast is is never made clear, and as Goodman Games had license to do what was in the books there was no way for them to expand the world really, so now that falls on us players!

  • @spaceranger7683

    Read the first book and part of the second and enjoyed them so far. I have to say, what keeps me from buying this book is that it appears that no other supplements are planned. Goodman Games' videos on Twitch basically said just use the random adventure generator after you finish the module in the book. Not a great selling point to say "whelp, you're on your own from here, lads!"

    Bleah. Sounds like they took serious liberties with Saberhagen's writings (for ex, Orcus is an anthropomorphized nuclear detonation stopped in mid-blast by the Change, as are most of the demons) and entirely ignored the later (and rather better written) Book of Swords and Lost Swords series, which were set in the same universe thousands of years into the future and would have made a much, much better setting than the honestly rather dull Empire of the East quadrology. Hell, just ignoring Ardneh's Sword is questionable - it's set about 1000 years after the original three books and exists mostly as a bridge between them and the Swords novels, but it's still got a lot of material clarifying some of the gray areas in the early books. I suppose it was probably a limited license thing, IIRC the Swords series had an RPG at one point on their own. Did this one even mention Draffut, who's one of the most interesting characters in the whole body of work?
    I'd tentatively recommend reading the series so you get a better feel for the setting, but honestly they aren't very good until teh Swords books, and even the much later Sword of Ardneh (released just before Saberhagen's death) is more frustrating than satisfying, since it leaves so many dangling threads around the Emperor.

    I bet this started out as a Book of Swords campign setting. It's the same world and it just begs to be made into a campaign setting. I would be very surprised if this doesn't get some kind of addendmum with the swords and deities from those books.

    It was one of the first books I bought for DCC. The lore looks very interesting, but I was disappointed with with the amount of content (barely 90 pages? Really?) and that you actually have to REMOVE content from the core rulebook (like races, clerics etc.) in order to run this, while getting nothing in return. I'll probably end up using some ideas out od this setting for my own campaign.

    • @JocularJunction
      @JocularJunction  2 года назад +1

      I like both for different reasons. Not really trying to be the Anti D&D 5e guy or anything. Some of my gaming groups really love the complete randomness of DCC and the low buy in. i.e. "Oh there's a dungeon... let's go!"
      Other friends want to see their character grow and evolve and dislike the negative effects DCC can impose on their character. Different systems for different people.

    I really enjoyed the books & was really excited about the DCC (really more MCC) book, but when I actually got it in my hand, I was pretty disappointed. There's just not that much to it and there doesn't seem to be any intention of doing more, more adventures or anything.
    Alas.

    This is by most accounts, the weakest DCC supplement. I think they learned a lot from this one.
