DCC is an absolute blast to play- it’s the gaming equivalent of a purple velour-lined van with a wizard riding a flying, fire-breathing unicorn airbrushed on the side.
I just ordered the core book & dice today. Getting back in the chair after 20 years. I'm actually excited about roleplaying for the first time in a long time!!
I watched your introduction to Dungeon Crawl Classics. I loved it so much that I ordered the core book to dive further into it. Thanks for giving a comprehensive and entertaining video. Scratchers!!
For the first funnel I ran, half the characters got a d14 HP kicker at 0 level. Out of 16 characters, 5 survived. Unsurprisingly, they were all among those with the kicker. So we're keeping that mechanic.
Screw 5E. I DM'd AD&D 2nd Edition in my teenage years & 3.5 for a few years as an adult. I don't recognize 4E or 5E. I haven't played in almost 20 years but I've been wanting to start back up. I'm going with DCC. I'm convinced. I don't have the available time to memorize tedious combat mechanics. Ordered the core rulebook & dice today. I'm really looking forward to this!
This kind of tutorial helps a lot. Being quite lost in discovering the rules (I played D&D thirty years ago) I'm looking for someone who would be able to explain to me how to apply in order the said rules... Because I can't seem to get started as a "Judge" in a first adventure... Each time something refers to another... and another... and I'm lost.
It’s not made clear in the book, but on mercurial magic rolls I would calculate that -20% Luck mod based on the number you roll (rounded up), not 20% of 100. So a roll of 20 with a -20% modifier would result in a 16. This makes it less punishing on low rolls and more punishing on high rolls. Otherwise any roll of 21 or less results in a 1, which is kind of lame.
I must admit I've found your three DCC videos most interesting. And entertaining! I'm still not in awe of OSR RPGs but all the same you seem to be doing a very good job of trying to convert me 😊 I like the idea of Level 0 and I like the DCC Spell mechanisms but to be honest, Level 0 would be easy to implement in 5e or PF. Spells would be more difficult but still doable I would imagine. The lack of character options seems to be the main drawback for me (that and the chance of starting with 1HP). Limited Classes and Races, no Feats, no Skills as such. The results of Character creation seems dull, most characters might get a +1 or -1 to an Ability Score, a -/+2 if you are really lucky. I can see the attraction to the "grittiness" but that's really a play style, not a rule set IMO. All the same, your enthusiasm makes your DCC series a pleasure to watch and I look forward to seeing more of them. As you say, DCC might not be for everyone but clearly you are enjoying yourself playing DCC!
I am ejoying it! It was an odd day when I realized some of my players didn't enjoy DCC as much as me. It is not for everyone but I like it because it was a very different experience with DCC than I've had with D&D like ever! There are fun aspects to learn from the OSR and older TTRPGs :)
@@JocularJunction I see DCC as it is and not necessarily in reference to anything else. It’s for me and likely for its creators its own thing and not necessarily I don’t think an attempt to influence or modify or tinker with current DnD. I have barely an inkling of what older editions might be like. I simply enjoy DCC as one would would enjoy Pathfinder: for different reasons. Essentially different systems and games with similarities in RPG themes and tropes. They might serve to INSPIRE one’s current DnD experience but that’s about it. And you pick up here and there about the grind of leveling up in old DnD. Also something referenced about an “Appendix E”...
I disagree. Gritty is mechanical too. I literally cannot run 5e after Tasha's. People coming in with passive perception of 21. Investigation of 21, ect, ect. Thos are Godly amounts of skills. I can't stand these min/maxing players at the table. They ruin my enjoyment of the game because they have an attitude of "fuck you my character is OP, I CAN do that because the rules say I can!" Rules are being substituted for actually dealing with problems in an intelligent or fun way.
@@testtest648 Yeah, it's like playing one of the Avengers. You don't really need to be a good player because you're so powerful you can succeed in most situations. I briefly tried 5e, but quickly returned to OSR games. Started playing DCC last year. I still play other OSR games because DCC can get a bit bogged down with all the tables, but I love the feel & tone of this game.
I like the DCC rules, they aren't too abstract and aren't too crunchy. I find them to be good and solid. However, I am not a fan of the RAW character creation system as it takes player agency and chucks it in the bin.
How well does he need to know some one for them to be at risk when he casts that spell? Would suck if you used it and killed your own party member without touching them lol
"You can choose a patron if you so desire." Is that true? I thought you couldn't get a patron until you cast "invoke patron". I did not know that you just get to START with one... Huh...
Hmm now I'm not sure. Maybe it was just a "why not" house rule of mine. Invoke Patron was used to determine how connected you are to said patron. I always let my players pick which one they wanted, Elves or Wizards.
8:08 Holy shit am I glad they changed the art in my version of the book for that table. That is straight up a nazi black sun symbol made by Himmler on that shield. Can't imagine how unnerved Goodman felt having paid money for that art only to learn it's meaning later.
"Your character died even before he got to adventure" - Take that max starting hit points 5e, lol. No hand holding here. love it, tx!
That was actually an option on the character creation tables for Hackmaster 1e

Amazing video, great tools and video for my players when we'll give DCC a shot
* Has to use the fallback rule to get an offensive spell.
* Every cast of that offensive spell kills someone he knows.
Harsh game is harsh
@@JocularJunction Just make sure to get to know the enemy before you cast the spell?
@Hope Crew that would be an epic ending to a session honestly. 😂
I’m an evil GM so I would have that include one of the other PCs via random table. “I didn’t pull the trigger I just put the bullet in”
Excellent tutorial. I love the mercurial magic. Every wizard has their own flavor for each spell. 🧙♂️
woo!
Keep the DCC content coming, my brotha!

Wonderful indie ambassador for DCC RPG and The Forgotten Realms of DnD, Jorphdan!
You make some great dcc content. Very helpful as I'm new to the game. Thanks for the video
You're very welcome!
Totally gonna do this
Thank you! This video was super helpful in understanding DCC, which I'm just now reading the rulebook for.
Glad it was helpful!

I just found you video and this reminds me of my days of first playing d&d. If you ever play any online games I would love to join in.
Thanks
DCC is the next D&D book ever
This sounds like a great way to do one shots

I can see the fear in the party's mind... 😂 The party is probably better off murdering him 1st.
and if you scratch off three 7's you get 500 dollars.

The only problem with these is that sometimes they do the calculations wrong so that AC or whatever is off.
Is there a level limit in this game?
It's 10!
Man, would be amazing if you got the scratch sheet and ended up with 0 hp. So funny I would literarily die.

what a waste of time with a scratch off. why not just roll?
