My favorite line about magic in the core book is when they talk about why there isn’t a light spell. “Use a torch, you fool!” In DCC, magic is both powerful and dangerous. I think that’s awesome.
I really hope, at some point in the near future, they publish a book of spells. Back in my 3e days, the Spell Compendium was my absolute favorite book.
This is super helpful. Sometimes having someone say it out loud is all I really need. I've read though the magic a few times and have come away with only a maybe 80% understanding. Honestly, I've left it in the hands of my player who has a magic user. I trust him, but I just let him do the rolls and go with what he says happens. But if I'm going to run this for strangers, I want to have a better handle on it. I've only run DCC a few times so far, but I'm having a ton of fun with it. Was never into D&D, but this captures the things that would draw me to D&D without making me want to pull my hair out the way AD&D & 3rd Ed. did.
Our mage kill tens of Thousens in anoter plain by casting magic sheld, it was funny because the way that spell manefest was so fitting, he roll for it btw
I’m not sure if DnD style spell scrolls exist in DCC, but imagining the risk-reward mental calculus when casting a scroll with an unknown side effect… pretty neat! You could cast your own version of a spell, or roll fresh on the d100 table when consuming the scroll. Hmm, I wonder if non-spellcasters could use scrolls too.
dude, the love the gonzo randomness of DCC. So wacky and creative. Never ran or played in one, think it would be so funny at the table, with some beers and chips
Did you get started with DCC after running Tomb of Horrors? The "brutal" aspect of both is something that I can see scaring some people away. I like that it takes the parental role away from the GM in that I don't have to "fudge" things in the favor of the players when they make odd/poor decisions.
When I played with my last group we rolled magic missiles and it healed us on top of the damage! GM wanted to nerf it but we pointed out our spells that basically killed us if we tried to use them. They backed off and it was our most used sleep up to level 4 where we ended.
Did you know that turns and rounds are actually different in 5e? A round is from an initiative count until it gets back to it, and a turn is an individual's time to act during that round. So if something limits actions on your turn, it doesn't apply to other creature's actions within the same round. RAW says that if you cast a spell as a bonus action, the only other spell you can cast on your TURN is a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action, but this doesn't stop you from casting spells as reactions on someone else's turn.
At 11:26 you say as an untrained class you roll a d10+Int modifier for your spell check. As I read it, an untrained class gets a d10 and nothing else (except the thief). Am I wrong or does it mean a warrior can only ever succeed in casting a cantrip found on a scroll for example, but never a 1st or higher level spell?
i swear this magic system was invented by a DM or player that was tired of fighters being out shined by spellcasters. like the more he talks the more im like "i'll just be a sword and board fight, this is dumb"
So this is a pretty long video so I'll just ask here. With an int of 16 (+2), I rolled 5 spells. In terms of my patron...I'm lawful...am I allowed to be a lawful wizard? Because all of these patrons seem really evil lol
3:58 into the video and I couldn't disagree more. This reminds me of the extremist players and/or DMs from the 80s that simply complicate things for the sake of complicating them.
Yeah made two channels. Original Jorphdan channel is D&D Lore. I wanted a second one to talk about other RPGs I enjoy. When you change content on a channel you can kind of destroy it. This way I can do both :)
@@JocularJunction I get it. I'm saving and practicing for my own channel. I'm going to review adventures and discuss how to mod them for other systems 5e to GURPS, BRP, WHFRP and vice versa. Probably not a great idea from an analytics standpoint but that's how I approach the hobby so that will be my channel. For FUN and profit. Love that your branching out and will tell a friend who loves your channel and DDC. In case he missed it.

When you Google something and 8 hours later Jorphdan is kind enough to make a full comprehensive video about said thing
😂
Thank you for putting a spotlight on this RPG. It totally deserves more love
Sure thing 👍 it's fun to make videos about things you enjoy.
I'm sold. Going to pick up the book tomorrow
Link’s in the Doobly-doo..
It's a completely fantastic game system!
I am currently checking dnd alternatives and this video aged well. Happy to reserve the 50th comment. Cheers
I picked this up after watching your last vid on DCC. The magic system is just to intriguing to pass by. Look forward to learning this rule set.
The magic system is absolutely top notch!!
Loving your deep dives on specific DCC rules and aspects, thank you!
Thanks!
DCC is so adaptable. I love the module “A Strange Night at the Pint n’ Pony” which was a Kickstarter. Lots of fun!
I really hope, at some point in the near future, they publish a book of spells. Back in my 3e days, the Spell Compendium was my absolute favorite book.
Dungeon crawl classics is my all time favorite TT rpg.
Been playing since day 1
Thanks for that. Some of my players are worried that the magic system in that game might be broken so now I can point them to your video.

Your Price is Right reference made me happy. I really appreciate the DCC/Goodman games love you are bringing. Thanks for your videos.
Awesome video, thanks for putting this together! Would love to see a video on Spell Duels
Sure thing!
I was about to buy the 5 player set, the 200$ fee to ship to Canada nixed that.
My guess is that they add very few spells and leave all those up to the 716 for homebrew ideas.
Nope you'd be surprised. Lots of spells, and many new spells and patrons appear in supplements and adventures!
Just bought my first DCC book and I cant wait!
yeeeaaahhh!
Thanks.

Oooo I like this idea of contested checks.
The Magic system is my absolute favorite part of DCC
I just got the rules, beast rules, and a shelf of modules.
Who wants to play?

Nope but I often think Tomb of Horrors would make a great 0 level funnel for DCC!
Main reason I got my Players to try this is because of the magic system.
Awesome!
When I played with my last group we rolled magic missiles and it healed us on top of the damage! GM wanted to nerf it but we pointed out our spells that basically killed us if we tried to use them. They backed off and it was our most used sleep up to level 4 where we ended.
also I'm like 30% sure this game's whole gimmick is being unfair, you're either op, underpowered, or nothing
Wow, the magic looks like great fun in this system 😀
My group plays OSE but we are about to dabble in some DCC. Looks really fun!
Awesome! I wish you the most fun!
Thanks!

it sounds like you say i dont like it at 2:40
I'm hoping to run this as the second campaign for my group of noobs. I think they will enjoy it.
I love the corruption
I cast, "Jorphdan's Adorable Dog!" Awwwwww.
Is there any extra source / splatbook with spells above 6th level? I would even take fan made ones.
I don't think so, but you'll find added spells in adventures and game settings.
At 11:26 you say as an untrained class you roll a d10+Int modifier for your spell check.

When you use spell burn does it impact modifiers? I know burning luck doesn't but I cannot find any mention about other abilities.
I believe it does, but your health doesn't go up or down if stamina changes
If the cleric has not acquired a holy symbol can it still spellcast?
If you are doing different RPG games I would suggest covering ALIEN. It rocks!
Yeah that sounds awesome, I'm a big fan of the franchise.
I love DCC
good man!
Does Oscphar also have a silent 'ph' in his name?
Nice
MORE YES YES YES YES!
Hey, Oscar!
i swear this magic system was invented by a DM or player that was tired of fighters being out shined by spellcasters. like the more he talks the more im like "i'll just be a sword and board fight, this is dumb"
There no water themed magic? Always left out as a element
Is that a real chest or a Mimic?
So this is a pretty long video so I'll just ask here. With an int of 16 (+2), I rolled 5 spells.
In terms of my patron...I'm lawful...am I allowed to be a lawful wizard? Because all of these patrons seem really evil lol
I think most patrons are chaotic, take what you want. Lawful / Neutral / Chaotic are more about deities, even then, play how you want :)
There are lawful or neutral patrons, but rare. There are at least 2 entire books of patrons you might want to check out
What breed is Oscar the dog?
Corgi Cairn terrier mix 🙂🐾

What the hell is a 'doobley do' I don't speak Matt Colville
