The Science Behind Reversing Aging - with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald | The Empowering Neurologist EP. 136

  • Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
  • Can aging be reversed? This is certainly a question that’s been asked for a long time. And if it is indeed achievable, how would it be measured?
Over the years, a variety of theories of aging have been proposed. The various theories have paved the way for testing of one sort or another to allow the development of an age assessment tool. These have included studies to look at genomic instability, the length of telomeres, evaluations of how mitochondria are functioning, markers of cellular senescence, and even measurements of the competence of stem cells.
But perhaps the most widely accepted candidate these days is a measurement of what are called “epigenetic alterations.” Basically, this is an assessment of the degree of binding of our DNA to specific chemicals called methyl groups, and not just the binding of these methyl groups, but the specific pattern by which they attach themselves to our DNA. This technology was developed by UCLA professor Dr. Steve Horvath and involves identification of 323 points on human DNA (among tens of thousands) where these methyl groups attach. Assessment of biological age using this technique has been called an epigenetic clock, a methylation clock, or nowadays, the Horvath clock. This is perhaps the most objective technology for considering age and aging.
Early on in his research as this aging clock was beginning to make its way into our understanding, Dr. Horvath made it quite clear that the clock was basically inviolate, meaning that we could not influence it, for better or worse. Recently however, the notion that the Horvath clock was not subject to our manipulation has been challenged, and this is extremely good news.
Dr. Kara Fitzgerald has just published what I consider to be a landmark paper. She studied 43 healthy adult males between the ages of 50 and 72 and put them on an eight-week treatment program with special attention to things like diet, sleep, exercise, and relaxation guidance along with supplemental probiotics and other phytonutrients. The subjects had an evaluation of their epigenetic age at the beginning of the study and at its conclusion. Remarkably, the intervention program was associated with a dramatic 3.23 years decrease in the epigenetic age in comparison to controls as measured by the Horvath technology.
The implications of this research are profound. Using the most widely accepted state-of-the-art measurement of aging, a specific lifestyle intervention program has led to age reversal.
Today on The Empowering Neurologist we talk with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald about her exciting research, how the study was designed, and most importantly, what are the implications of this work.
    ====
Kara Fitzgerald, ND, received her doctor of naturopathic medicine degree from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She completed the first Counsel on Naturopathic Medicine-accredited post-doctorate position in nutritional biochemistry and laboratory science at Metametrix Clinical Laboratory (now Genova Diagnostics) under the direction of Richard Lord, PhD. Her residency was completed at Progressive Medical Center, a large, integrative medical practice in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Fitzgerald is the lead author and editor of Case Studies in Integrative and Functional Medicine and is a contributing author to Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM)’s Textbook for Functional Medicine. With the Helfgott Research Institute, Dr. Fitzgerald is actively engaged in clinical research on the DNA methylome using a diet and lifestyle intervention developed in her practice. The first publication from the study focuses on reversal of biological aging and was published 04-12-2021 in the journal Aging. A consumer book and application-based program with DNA methylation assessment are scheduled for release 01-2022.
Dr. Fitzgerald is on the faculty at IFM, is an IFM Certified Practitioner and lectures globally on functional medicine. She runs a Functional Medicine Clinic Immersion program for professionals, and maintains a podcast series, New Frontiers in Functional Medicine and an active blog on her website, www.drkarafitzgerald.com. Her clinical practice is in Sandy Hook, Connecticut.

Hello Bill! May I suggest some HIIT? Studies
have found just 9 MINUTES of “loosing our breath “ (breathing hard) helps with autophagy and overall homeostasis. Break it down to reaching breathlessness for 30 to 45 seconds (can’t hold a conversation) and slow it down (not Stop) for another 15-20 seconds before starting next cycle. It really doesn’t seem to help weight loss 😓, but it keeps our bodies functional at our age😉

I’m completing my certification in Functional nutrition in the meantime practicing on a few friends by gathering their health history that includes antecedents, environment- exposure to mold- heavy metals etc etc it boils down to bio individuality because no two people can follow the same “self care” plan - this is why so many people fall between the cracks of this sick care system. I recommend first cleaning up the diet and environment (stress reduction / sleep, elimination- exercise- spiritual and track to see if things heal if not get labs done - then work on deficiency to sufficiency - the body was designed to heal!
And it can if we learn how to care for ourselves 🙌🏼

You cannot wholly reverse aging-it's a normal part of life. However, you may be able to slow it down and help prevent age-related diseases by adopting a healthy lifestyle. That includes habits like eating a healthy diet, wearing sunscreen every day, and exercising. Especially for us women, we tend to look more stressed and weaker as we age. Everything appears to speed up in our perceptions as we get older. Your body needs all the help it can get. So, for me, I take Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (Vitruvin Nutrition 500mg) every morning with a protein drink and some Greek yogurt. It has radically changed everything. All sorts of problems have mostly disappeared. I have lots of energy. My vision is better, aches and pain are almost gone, and my mental clarity is pretty well. At 75, that’s not shabby.

This was not a problem years ago, so it's just a money making scam. It's amazing that Dr's were not taught any thing about nutrition, but all of a sudden there are experts.

I've just found out through ultrasound that I've got renal cysts and I'm having so much trouble getting a low oxalate, low phosphorus, low sodium diet that is also low carb, low fat. I tried doing Keto for a short while, loading up the fridge with cheeses, bacon, Chia seeds, beets, kale, green leaf and red leaf lettuce, chicken with skin, lots of broccoli. This was before I knew about my Kidney cysts. I spent a lot of money and now I'm going to try to return some of these items to the store. I gained 12 pounds on the Keto diet. The only way I can lose weight is doing a low carb, low fat diet. It's worked for me in the past and it worked until I tried Keto. My new motto is, if what you were doing worked, then keep doing it and don't listen to so called experts telling you that you should switch to 75 percent fats, ,20 percent protein and 5 percent Carbs. This diet is ridiculous. I'm Seventy years old today, and I'm listening to myself and the good doctors like Dr. Suneel Dahnd, John Campbell, Dr. Mobeen Syed and Dr. ME. They agree that people who are considered Senior, need more protein in their daily diet because after a certain age they lose muscle mass. Protein is as essential for life as are water and air.

I supplement quite a lot to keep the autoimmune diseases at bay. Thank you for the book recommendation, I will be reading this winter 😘

@@jamicarpenter8760 Yes everyone is different and there's no one diet that suits all. It's a long process to find out what your body thrives on or dies on. Filtered water is great but it still has the frequency of drugs, medications, HRT and metals etc. Look up David Wolfe on yt about spring water. Maybe re energise your filtered water or put shungite and a quartz crystal in the bottom of your filter container.

Sorry to say that even with the very best of dietary and exercise regimes, one cannot reverse ageing. The best that can be achieved is slowing down the ageing process… if we’re lucky enough we live long enough to grow old before we die. To assert that people can, in effect, “become younger” (the sub-text beneath the phrase “reversing ageing”) is misleading at best and making money off people’s vulnerability at worst. As a doctor of medicine, one would expect that all due care and diligence be taken rather than jumping on the bandwagon of potential notoriety and increased income.

Does this study really further our understanding or just obscure what the most beneficial interventions are ? People only have so much time and capacity for moderating their lifestyles. Saying just concentrate on every facet of your life doesn't seem that helpful.

Great info but having active MTHFR SNPs require very different treatment than what you’re describing. Methylfolate, folic acid, folinic acid are VERY DIFFERENT. This is great info but it’s lacking nuance.. 40-60% of people have MTHFR or other methylation SNPs & could hurt themselves greatly by taking these things BEFORE testing their genome & serum levels.. Folic acid = A hole, methylfolate= full blown mental health crisis. You can be too sick to take methyl groups until you figure it out so please don’t take these things without guidance of an MTHFR trained Dr. They’re hard to find btw so look hard! It’s soo important!
